The country s mystery lies in its historical intricacies of genocide, slavery, invasion and, most recently, populist revolution. Its enduring legacy comes from the indomitable spirit of the Cuban people themselves, keeping their country alive through sheer ingenuity while the infrastructure crumbles around them. From the fields of cane producing the rum that fuels the everpresent salsa to the beautiful bays and beaches and the magnificent colonial architecture, Cuba enthrals with its culture and exuberance. Our 15-day itinerary includes time to comprehensively explore Havana in depth, as well as visits to provincial treasures such as Santiago de Cuba, the site of Fidel Castro s nationalist revolution, Cienfuegos, colonial Trinidad and Camaguey. In addition, the tour includes a cruise experience that provides a harmonious balance between conventional cruising and private yachting to create an exciting voyage of discovery. Stephen first visited Cuba in 1986 and has been travelling to and writing about the island ever since. Now the Chairman of the International Institute for the Study of Cuba, based in the UK, Stephen has a PhD on the subject of Cuban literature. He has written numerous articles on diverse questions such as the history of European and US Cuba relations, Cuban attitudes and policy towards homosexuals, Cuban art and the nature of the Cuban state. Stephen s book, Detective Fiction in Cuban Society and Culture, was published in 2006 by Peter Lang. Stephen is an experienced guide and tour leader and frequently leads academic study groups to the island. He led and designed numerous study tours for the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Geographic Society and Smithsonian Institute. His other tour projects have included leading birdwatching and trekking tours. His wealth of contacts in Cuba adds greatly to the experience.

3 The Variety Voyager Cruising on a genuinely small ship offers a completely different experience to the larger vessels designed for the mass market. For several years now Academy Travel has offered tours with a cruise and land component on ships built for no more than 90 passengers. Built in 2012, the 68-metre MS Variety Voyager is the newest addition to the fleet of 11 small ships operated by the boutique cruising company, Variety Cruises. Based in Athens, the company offers a select range of cruises in Europe and the Mediterranean. The most impressive features of the Variety Voyager are the small number of passengers (maximum 72), the good size of public areas indoors and out, and the crew-to-passenger ratio. The indoor dining and lounge areas can each hold 75 passengers, and there is a spacious bar area as well. Outdoors there are large open decks on two levels with plenty of seating, allowing passengers to relax and enjoy the scenery without feeling hemmed in. Cabins are well designed and a decent size, without being luxurious. For this tour, we have reserved B category cabins with upgrades to A and limited P cabins available. These cabins are approximately the same size and have the same amenities. Category B cabins are located on the main and lower deck and have portholes. Category A cabins are located on the main deck and have full-size windows. Category P cabins are located on the upper Horizons Deck offering double windows. The overall quality of the ship is a solid four-star level. The décor is modern and functional and the food is modern international style. This morning we embark on a walking tour with a local architect through the alleys and squares of Old Havana, including the Plaza de Armas and the small Museo le Templete. The Palace of the Generals is a fine example of Baroque Cuban architecture, built in the 1770 s and having served several purposes over its lifespan. It houses the City Museum and a fine collection detailing events from Cuban history. Cathedral Square is the newest of the city s four squares and is where we visit the Cathedral of San Cristobal. Plaza Vieja was originally laid out in 1559 and has the most eclectic architecture of the four squares, ranging from Baroque to Gaudi-inspired art nouveau, and is a vibrant area containing many restaurants and bars. We call into the Hotel Ambos Mundos where Hemmingway lived and wrote his novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls, in Room 511. After a tour of the Gran Teatro de la Habana, one of Havana s most beautiful architectural works, we stop and visit the city s camera obscura and get a unique panoramic tour of the cityscape from the roof of a restored colonial mansion. Overnight Havana (B, L) Sunday 3 March Modern Havana, history, politics and architecture Our tour of modern Havana commences with a visit of the Maqueta de la Habana in Miramar, for a talk on the development of the Cuban capital and its fascinating architectural and social history. Afterwards, we travel in a fleet of iconic classic American cars and drive along the landmark Malecon sea front, thoroughfare and gathering place for musicians, poets and local fisherman. We visit the Hotel Riviera, built by the Mafia as a gambling mecca in the 1950s, and stop at the US Embassy and the Maine monument for a talk on the history of the beleaguered relationship with the United States. We drop into the famous Hotel Nacional for a cocktail in its

5 History Bar and visit the Parque Maceo to take in the sights, before lunch in a restaurant with balcony views of the sea. After lunch, we visit the Cristo de la Habana statue by the renowned sculptress Rita Longa, for views of the city. Later, we visit the Plaza de la Revolution for a guided tour of the José Martí museum and discover the story of Cuba s apostle of Independence. Overnight Havana (B, L) Monday 4 March To Santiago De Cuba Today we are scheduled to fly to Santiago. As flights in Cuba are state run, timing and schedules are not made available until closer to departure and are often subject to change. For this reason, we have not scheduled any sightseeing for this day but there is plenty to explore before departure or upon our arrival. Overnight Santiago de Cuba (B, D) Tuesday 5 March Santiago De Cuba Santiago de Cuba is considered Cuba s cultural capital and has been instrumental in the evolution of the country s music, literature, architecture and politics. A melting pot of Afro- Caribbean cultures it is the birthplace of Cuba s most famous citizen, Fidel Castro. A morning walking tour takes us to Santiago de Cuba s most important sites including the Parque Cespedes, Calle Heredia and Plaza Dolores. We pass Revolutionary Square to Moncada Barracks, central to the beginnings of Castro s revolution for a guided tour of the garrison and visit to a Cuban cigar factory to see the skill of the Torcedores rolling the cigars by hand. Finally, we visit the Santa Ifigenia cemetery where many leaders of the war of independence including the national hero, Jose Marti, are buried and witness the changing of the guard ceremony. After dinner this evening, there is a visit to the Casa de la Trova where musicians perform a unique style of Cuban folk music. Overnight Santiago de Cuba (B, D) Above: Viva la revolution! Santiago de Cuba is the birthplace of the Fidel Castro; music is everywhere on the streets of Cuba Below: The Teatro Principal is home to the Camaguey Ballet School Wednesday 6 March To Camaguey This morning we depart for El Cobre Basilica, Cuba s most sacred pilgrimage site and the shrine of the nation s patron saint, Our Lady of Charity, revered for saving the lives of three local fishermen caught in a violent storm. We then travel over the Sierra Maestra to Bayamo, where Manuel Cespedes, a sugar plantation owner, called for the abolition of slavery and by freeing his own slaves incited the first war of independence against the Spanish. After lunch in the centre of town we head to Camaguey, the city of Tinajones, large clay pots used to store rainwater in times of drought. We visit the Camaquito project a charity that supports children where the founder will talk to us about their projects in the fields of education, sport, culture and health. We then visit the wonderful 1850 s Teatro Principal where we hope to catch a training session of the internationally famous Camaguey Ballet School. Overnight Camaguey (B, L, D)

6 Thursday 7 March Trinidad We travel through the Sugar Cane Valley to Sancti Spiritus, a town rich in colonial history yet rarely frequented by tourists. The quadruple-arched Yayabo Bridge is a highlight of our stroll, through the town to the tower built by the sugar-rich Iznaga family to keep watch over their slave workers. After lunch, we continue to Trinidad and the Museo Histórico Municipal. Situated in a grand mansion it features exhibits of colonial furniture and artefacts from the slave trade. Before checking into our hotel we sample the local drink made with honey at the Taberna la Canchanchara. Overnight Trinidad. The colonial French architecture has earned the town a World Heritage listing and we explore some of the palatial buildings, including the ornate Palacio del Valle and the Terry Theatre where we view the Italianate ceiling fresco and the four-tiered stage hall. After lunch in Cienfuegos we board the Variety Voyager and settle into our cabins and life at sea. Overnight Variety Voyager (B, L, D) Saturday 9 March Cruise to Trinidad The ship docks in Trinidad this morning, where we disembark and take an excursion with a local guide into Topes De Collantes National Park. A walk of approximately six kilometres along well-made paths takes us through the forest and past waterfalls and natural pools for bathing. Coffee is grown in the area and we may be able to stop at a Campesino s (farmers) house and enjoy a brew from hand-picked beans, freshly ground and roasted on wood-burning stoves. We return to the ship in the afternoon. Overnight Variety Voyager (B, L, D) Sunday 10 March At Sea We spend the majority of the day at sea, with a late afternoon arrival in the Bay of Singuanea, where we spend the night. Overnight Variety Voyager (B, PL, D) Monday 11 March Juventud Island Until 1977, the island was called the Isle of Pines. In 1978 Fidel Castro turned the island into one grand Communist school for students from around the world and it became the Island of Youth. We disembark and visit the Presidio Modelo, an abandoned panopticon prison where both Fidel and Raul Castro were imprisoned from After lunch we visit an art school and the maternity ward of a local hospital before free time to explore Nueva Gerona s grand boulevard. 7 Tuesday 12 March Maria La Gorda After breakfast, we disembark in Maria La Gorda and visit the local school to meet the Cuban children and their teachers, to discuss the differences between the Cuban and American educational systems - particularly in the rural areas of the country. We visit Guanahacabibes National Park on the westernmost tip of the island. The peninsula is one of the last refuges of the aboriginals known as Guanahatabeyes who fled from the Spanish conquistadors and has some 140 archaeological sites. This afternoon we meet the locals and enjoy a swim in the sea. Overnight Variety Voyager (B, L, D) Wednesday 13 March Havana The ship docks in Havana this morning, where we visit the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes for a guided tour of the museum s comprehensive collection of Cuban art. A Chinatown in Cuba may seem completely out of place, but Havana once had one of the largest Chinese communities in Latin America, dating back to the mid-19th century when indentured workers were brought in to work in the sugar cane fields. We enjoy lunch in one of the colourful restaurants before some free time to stroll through old Havana. This evening we make our way to Café El Mercurio for dinner, and then to the Café Taberna to experience the wonderful salsa music of the Buena Vista Social Club style performance. Inspired by Gaudí in Barcelona and Brancusi in Rome, but most of all by Picasso and Dubuffet, the artist has turned his neighbourhood into a street art extravaganza using intricate tilework and a kaleidoscope of colour. Enjoy a rum tasting before lunch at La Barraca Restaurant, located in the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, which specializes in Cuban cuisine and offers breathtaking views of the Bay of Havana. After lunch well-known architect Pedro Vasquez will give a lecture. We return to the Voyager for the Captain s Farewell Dinner and our final night on board in Sierra Maestra Port. Overnight Variety Voyager (B, L, D) Friday 15 March Disembark in Havana Our cruise concludes after breakfast with disembarkation at 9.00am. We visit Finca Vigia a villa outside of Havana where Hemingway lived continuously for 20 years. Now a museum, Hemingway donated the house to the Cuban people, and it remains largely untouched since the author departed after Castro s revolution. We enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before checking into our Havana hotel. Overnight Havana (B, L)

8 Saturday 16 March Havana Today we travel the tobacco route through some of Cuba s greenest provinces to Pinar del Río. In the Viñales Valley we visit Casa del Veguero (house of a tobacco farmer), touring the fields and a drying house. After lunch in Viñales we head to Pinar del Río and tour the Franciscan Donatien cigar factory before returning to Havana for our farewell dinner. Overnight Havana. (B, L, D) Sunday 17 March Depart The tour concludes after breakfast. (B) Weather on Tour Cuba lies in the Caribbean between the North Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico and the day-to-day conditions are moderated by the local trade winds. The Tropic of Cancer crosses just north of the island. March falls during the popular dry season with sunny skies, low rain fall and humidity. The water in the Caribbean is lovely and warm, while north-easterly winds keep things cool. Expect average temperatures of around 23 degrees. Average highs reach 28 degrees and the average low temperature is 19 degrees with eight hours of sunshine. The sea temperature along the Gulf of Mexica remains a consistent 26 degrees, ideal for swimming. Overall, March is indeed the ideal time to visit Cuba. Fitness Requirements of THIS tour It is important both for you and for your fellow travellers that you are fit enough to be able to enjoy all the activities on this tour. To give you an indication of the level of physical fitness required to participate on our tours, we have given them a star grading. Academy Travel s tours tend to feature extended walking tours and site visits, which require greater fitness than coach touring. We ask you to carefully consider your ability to meet the physical demands of the tour. This Grade Two tour is designed for people who lead active lives and can comfortably participate in up to five hours of physical activity per day on most days, including longer walking tours, challenging archaeological sites, climbing stairs, embarking and disembarking trains and/or boats, and a more demanding tour schedule with one night stops or several internal flights.
