4 St. Stephen Gateway to Atlantic Canada Relax amid the beauties of nature or challenge yourself with an outdoor adventure. Enjoy the picturesque scenery of the blooming flowers in spring, the long summer evening sunsets, the fall foliage or the snow covered trees and hills of winter. "Come and explore St. Stephen - you'll be glad you did." As a community, St. Stephen has much to offer: excellent modern elementary, middle and high schools; a wide variety of places to worship; all major service clubs; an active recreation department; fun-filled summer celebrations like Chocolate Fest and International Festival. The town has quiet tree-lined residential streets, beautiful historic homes and new subdivisions; a shopping mall and a bustling downtown core; small parks and playgrounds and friendly, caring people. It also has a long, proud history of international co-operation and friendship with its "across the bridge" neighbor, Calais, Maine, U.S.A. St.Stephen has approximately 5000 residents currently living within the town limits. St. Stephen is home to a number of scenic covered bridges. The Dennis Stream No. 3 covered bridge, or the Maxwell Crossing, was built in 1910 and measures 18.3 m (60 ) in length. The Digdeguash River No. 6 Covered Bridge, and Dumbarton Station was built in 1928 and measures 23.2 m (76 ). The Magaguadavic River No. 7 Covered Bridge, at Flume Falls, was built in It s 18.3 m (60 ) long. Digdeguash River No. 3 Covered Bridge, at Elmsville, was built in 1913 and its length is 35 m (114 9 ). History St. Stephen is situated on the International Boundary between New Brunswick, Canada and Maine, U.S.A.. The lower part of this boundary is the St. Croix River, a Canadian Heritage River, which has been steeped in history since the French explorers, Champlain and DeMons, first ventured on St. Croix Island (sometimes called Dochets Island ) in One hundred and eighty years later, in 1784, the United Empire Loyalists arrived following the American War of Independence. They joined the few original settlers in the area. The area grew both economically and culturally, and by 1800, St. Stephen was perhaps the most important regional port for shipments of timber and lumber overseas. Both sides of the St. Croix River became studded with numerous shipyards and wharves, as a "Golden Era" began. The many docks were crowded with Tall Ships loaded with lumber bound for Europe. The two communities share lives as "border towns" in a most neighbourly fashion. In fact, in 1812 the people of St. Stephen loaned Calais sufficient gunpowder to celebrate the 4th of July while both countries were technically at war. St. Stephen was incorporated as a town in 1871, then five years later its business district was almost totally consumed by fire when eighty buildings and thirteen wharves were destroyed. By the turn of the century, lumbering and shipbuilding had all but disappeared from the area. The perseverance of its people and diversification of its economic base helped the town survive. The same enterprise and dedication continues today as St. Stephen begins the 21st century. Festivals The Chocolate Festival in St. Stephen gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy his or her favorite chocolate desires. With a tour of Ganong Brow. manufacturing facility on Chocolate Drive you can sample all of the specialties of the famous candy makers. You can also participate in a number of contests, luncheons, dinners, garden tours and concerts where tantalizing chocolate sweets and candy will tempt you. The International Homecoming festival is a joint celebration hosted by St. Stephen and Calais. This year marks the 30th festival with events such as airplane model fly-in, outdoor concerts, street dances, road races, canoe/kayak rally, cow patti breakfast/bingo, carnival, horse show draft race, parade and fireworks. 4 Explore Your New Brunswick Travel Guide

Today, Ministers Island is a protected Provincial Historic Site and visitors can enjoy guided tours during the season. St. Croix Island The first Europeans to settle in the area were a company of French explorers led by Samuel de Champlain and Sieur de Monts in They attempted to set up a permanent community on St. Croix Island, four miles from the mouth of the St. Croix River. After just one winter, which was admittedly unusually severe, the attempt to settle was a dismal failure. Nearly half of the men died of scurvy and exposure. They dismantled their buildings and sailed to a more hospitable location across the Bay of Fundy, where they founded Port Royal, now known as Annapolis Royal. St. Croix Island is an International Historic Site and had interpretive and viewing parks on both sides of the St. Croix River. 7 Sports & Activities The active and the adventurous will find a wealth of adventure in St. Andrews by-the-sea. Be it seaside golf, a variety of whalewatching vessels with an equal number of whale species to view, or a relaxing stroll around our historic community with a detailed walking map, St. Andrews offers something for everyone. From low water to high water takes about 6.2 hours and in that time up to 2¼ billion tons of water will swill into the Bay through the passages. In the next 6.2 hours the water swirls out uncovering six square miles of intertidal beach to be explored for sea creatures and historical artifacts thrown up by the powerful tides. For those interested in following the changes in tides, the St. Andrews Welcome Centre can direct you to where tide tables can be obtained locally. The Huntsman Marine Science Centre The aquarium is open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors from near and far have visited the aquarium to learn more about the marine life in Passamaquoddy Bay. The aquarium opened in 1972, and still generates interest in children and adults eager to learn about the marine environment and experience it first hand. The ever popular touch tank allows visitors to get up close and personal with sea stars, crabs, sea cucumbers, sea urchins and more. There are displays of other fish, from the ancient and huge sturgeon to the interesting looking sea ravens. There are frogs, salamanders, and one of the most reent additions to the family, the famous Big Dee-Dee the lobster, who found himself the centre of media attention in 2008 when the 22-pound (10 kg) crustacean found himself in a fish store in the middle of a tug of war between those who wanted to see him cooked, and those who clawed for him to be released. We have a deep-sea room, where you can learn more about the deep ocean, a theatre, where DVDs are shown, and no visit would be complete without saying hello to the harbour seals, which are fed daily at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. As you leave, we have a gift shop, stocked with everything from souvenirs to marine life guide books. Gather information on everything to do in and around our area at the newly decorated tourist facilities at the Day Adventure Centre. Photo opportunities abound on the lookout of the Magaguadavic basin on the banks of the upper river in St. George, where the river meets the sea, where old meets new, where visitors meet unspoiled countryside, uncrowded beaches but always a friendly welcome! This District was for years the center of the granite industry in New Brunswick. The area came into production in 1872 with the opening of a quarry on the shore of Lake Utopia and the erection of a finishing plant in St. George. "The Bay of Fundy Red Granite Company" was founded by Mr. Charles Ward, a New York artist and photographer, after he became very intrigued by the immense ledges of deep red granite while on a fishing trip to Lake Utopia. This pioneer company had its successes and failures, but the business grew and the granite industry became the leading employer of the area. In 1890, there were six firms in St. George manufacturing the different coloured granites quarried near the town. The typical St. George granite is bright red in colour, but many different shades occur in the district. Specific colours were obtained from various quarries offering customers a wide selection. This granite of high quality was employed mainly for monumental purposes and to a very limited degree, for building. The granite quarried in St. George was acknowledged by retail dealers as being superior, prettier, and more durable than any imported. For this reason, samples of our work can be seen in nearly every Canadian cemetery. The falling-off of the industry was not due to any fault of the manufacturers, nor defects in the granite itself, but rather the trouble was simply the cost of production. Manufacturers of the area were unable to pay the going wages and compete with foreign granite quarried in Norway. Sweden, and Scotland. After 60 years as a flourishing industry, the St. George granite industry began to die slowly. After World War II there continued to be some demands for gravestones, however, a vigorous industry was unable to thrive on such occasional contracts. In 1953 the last firm was closed marking the end of the St. George granite business. Though the industry is no longer operational, it has forever left its mark on the community. The St. George post office and granite monuments in area cemeteries continue to remind us of our roots as, "The Granite Town". Historical Notes 1.Peter Clinch, the founding father of St. George, landed with a group of colonists at the foot of present day Clinch Street on November 10, He received a grant for the land that was to become the town of St. George on February 2, In 1786 Peter Clinch served as a member of the House of Assembly in Mallard House, Saint John. 2.Colonel Hugh Mckay, a resident of St. George, was a Colonel in the militia for 50 years and served in the House of Assembly for 30 years. As well, he was a Senior Justice of the Court of Common Pleas. At his death on January 28, 1848, he was the oldest and the only, full Colonel of the militia in the province of New Brunswick. 3.By the mid 1800's five shipyards, ten sawmills and seven granite mills were operating in and around St. George. 4.Fort Vernon, constructed on the south side of the basin in 1812, was the first fort built in St. George. In 1866 a second fort was built on Fort Hill. The cannons from this fort can presently be found in front of the St. George Legion Hall. 5.The only evidence of a brickyard in the town can be seen in the Dr. Dinsmore Explore Your New Brunswick Travel Guide House on Brunswick Street. The house is constructed of locally made bricks from a brickyard owned by Wallace and Tyler Shaw. 6.The Lake Utopia Medallion, a large circular piece of granite proven to have been cut by an expert stone cutter, bears the head of an Indian Chief believed to be a friend of DeMonts. Although discovered in 1862, the medallion is thought to have been cut by a member of the DeMonts-Champlain expedition of The medallion is presently in the New Brunswick museum. 7.The first church, built in 1790, is the oldest Presbyterian Church in Canada. 8.The first Anglican Church was built in 1821, burnt January 1st, The first Baptist Church was built in The first Roman Catholic Church was built in Published c.1902, the "Granite Town Greetings" was the towns first newspaper. 13 Harvey Small Town, Big History In the centre of Harvey at the village office, see a giant fiddle - erected as a tribute to the late Don Messer ( ), the legendary Down East fiddler whose much-loved television variety show was once the most popular program on Canadian television. He was born in the nearby community of Tweedside. Bring your canoe or boat, then relax and practice your fishing at Harvey Lake, known for its quality small-mouth bass or take part in the annual fishing derby. Harvey has several shops and cafes to enjoy home-cooked meals and home baked goods and in-season local produce. The market also features two floors of antiques and collectibles, charming local arts and crafts, a flea market, and public rest rooms. Visit the Briggs & Little Woolen Mill, Canada's oldest woolen mill, since The Village of Harvey is a warmhearted vibrant community located just 47 kilometers southwest of Fredericton, the capital of New Brunswick. First settled in 1838 by a group of 16 Scottish families, Harvey is steeped in history with many of the early buildings still in existence and some say the spirits of these earlier residents are still present as well. Harvey was once well known as a railroad town and a great farming area, having been dubbed the Jersey Capital of Canada. Farming has now been largely replaced by residential development and many light industries have found it a supremely satisfactory location as Harvey is only minutes away from the Maine Border at Vanceboro, making it viable to set up for import/export. One of the earliest industries in the area was established in York Mills in This still exists as the Briggs and Little Woolen Mill and fine yarns are exported internationally to the U.S., Europe, England, Australia and other countries. Many of the existing general merchandising outlets had their roots in the late 1800 s and are still in operation as general stores, food services and convenience outlets. Moving ahead approximately 150 years, the families of this area are kept informed of the community activities by the Lionews, one of the many services provided by the local chapter of Lions International. Youth are kept busy attending many numerous functions, including a Girl Guide Movement, 4-H Club, Army Cadets, school-sponsored sports, and youth church organizations. Some of the local residents indicate that they never get a chance to stay home, as there is something to do every night. Harvey is only minutes away from King s Landing Historical Settlement, Canada s #1 tourist attraction. Visitors to our communities are welcome to stop at the unique gift shops and stores and participate in the many year-round activities. In the winter, people can be found ice fishing, curling, cross country skiing, playing hockey or out on the approximately 60 miles of groomed snowmobile trails maintained in the area in the summer, residents and visitors utilize the many lakes in the area for boating, fishing, swimming and water-skiing. Should you wish, you can just park your home on wheels or rent a cottage, relax and enjoy the panoramic scenery and perhaps, catch one of the many local artisans at work, as tours of most of the manufacturing outlets are available at your request. Harvey is a great place to visit and many visitors have decided that they would like to live here. Contact: Harvey Village Office, Mon, Wed, and Fri. 9am-12:30pm. 27 Town of Hampton Hampton is one of those towns that you remember long after you have visited, due to it s stunning landscape, river and marsh views, stately old homes, and friendly residents. If you ve come to admire our town s natural wonders, there is an array of options at your disposal. You can spend the day exploring the Dutch Point Trail system; admiring the breathtaking view of the Hampton Marsh from a roadside lookout; or bird watching from the Spooner Island gazebo. If you are a boating enthusiast, consider this: the Kennebecasis River runs through Hampton, a perfect setting for both canoeing and kayaking. Local rentals are available. If sailing, motor boating, or water sports appeal to you, the Saint John River system can be accessed via the Saint John Marina; the Millidgeville Marina, the Renforth Wharf; or the Belleisle Bay Marina. Our region is dotted with quaint covered bridges, also known as kissing bridges. Many are still in use on our picturesque country roads, while others are simply reminders of our province s rich past. You may choose to rent a bicycle from a local shop and explore the many town streets full of historical homes and architecture. Many local artisans have their studios nearby, and every spring there is a Studio Tour across Kings County. The Jailhouse Gallery is another outlet for local painters. Interested in the History of Kings County? If so, you should head in to the Kings County Museum, which features things such as the famous Confederation Quilt; the County archives; and a seasonal display of locally found amphibians. If relaxation and entertainment is more your style, take in a show at Saint John s renowned Imperial Theatre; go to the movies in Rothesay or Saint John; or bring back memories of your childhood by going to the Sussex drive-in theatre. Treat yourself to a great meal at one of our restaurants or outdoor cafés, or a treat from a local bakery or ice cream parlour. Then consider working off some of those calories, challenge yourself by playing 18 holes at Hampton s beautiful golf course; an exhilarating game of tennis; some fun mini-golfing; or a refreshing swim at the community s public swimming pool. One feature that is quite unique to our region is its system of ferries. The majority of these ferries are provincially run and free of charge, and sometimes the only way to get from one place to another. It s possible to go on a ferry run before settling into one of the countless campgrounds, inns, or B&Bs that we have to offer. Eco-friendly Pontoon Tours Hampton, New Brunswick Office: Cell: Customize your tour for up to 11 people aboard our disability accessible, eco-friendly, 260 sq. ft. electric powdered pontoon boat. We encourage you to: Relax with the flow of the Kennebecasis River and leave your worries behind. Cast a line for a striped bass, smallmouth bass, sturgeon, perch or catfish. Observe waterfowl, birds of prey and marvel in their beauty. Take a dip and cool off in the tidal waters of the picturesque Kennebecasis. Photograph the beauty of the marsh - spectacular in autumn. 28 Welcome to St. Martins Nestled on miles of quiet, unspoiled Bay of Fundy beaches, is the serene seaside community of St. Martins. The village is the gateway to the Fundy Trail, a park with walking and hiking paths along the last undeveloped stretch of coastline on the eastern seaboard. Located on the shores of the famous Bay of Fundy, home to the World`s Highest Tides, St. Martins is a beautiful, picturesque village with a rich history. Our scenic village has many interesting features, included are Victorian properties; miles of unspoiled, quiet, accessible beaches; two lighthouses; a garden-park; an active harbour boasting two covered bridges; world famous `Sea Caves`; and is `The Gateway to the Fundy Trail `. Centrally Located between Hopewell Rocks and St. Andrews, the village of St. Martins provides a spectacular setting from which to explore the entire Fundy Coast. The original name of the community was Goolwagagek * A Micmac Word meaning haunt of the hooded seal according to DeMoulles map of Over many years it was translated as Araquaki. Later translations of the name produced Roquaque and finally by 1762 it appeared on a map (presently in the Library of Massachusetts Historical Society) as Quaco. It has remained unchanged since that time. The newly settled community was christened St. Martin's by one of the original grantees Matthias Moran after his ancestral province in France. Matthias Moran was the founder of the prolific Moran Shipbuilding family. This family together with the Vaughan family accounted for greatest number of vessels built at St. Martin s yards. These two families mastered many of their own vessels, sailing around the world under their own House Flag. An additional thirty-seven families are considered major builders of St. Martin's vessels. This little village was to become the third largest producer of wooden sailing vessels on the eastern seaboard of North America. The first of the more than 500 vessels built at St. Martin's was launched in 1803 and named the RACHEL. The last vessel was launched in 1919 and named the SELINA K. GOLDMAN. When the days building sailing vessels ended, many men who comprised the talented workforce of the village found employment at the Saint John Shipbuilding Company where they used their expertise in shipbuilding to produce the great modern commercial and naval vessels used today. The last vessels on which St. Martin's men shipbuilders were involved were the Halifax Class Frigates built for the Canadian Navy in the 1990 s. The unique architecture of the village was, in many instances copied from European buildings, the intricate designs of which were brought back by sea captains and incorporated into their own homes here. Those who could afford it and there were several, brought artisans from Europe to decorate the interiors of their homes by painting their ceilings and wall panels. Unfortunately, little of this art remains today. There were, as well local cabinet-makers who produced everything from sleigh beds to original doors, chairs, desks and other furniture for the shipbuilder s Salmon River B & B On the Bay of Fundy Your Hosts Mike and Barb Fiori Gateway to the Fundy Trail salmonriverbnb@aol.com 4 Snow's Lane, St. Martins, New Brunswick E5R 1E Main Street, St. Martins, NB Telephone: (506) Camping & RV Supplies Propane Filling Gifts & Souvenirs Toys Hardware Groceries Bakery Pizza Gas Diesel Oil Gardening Supplies OPEN: MONDAY TO FRIDAY 6 AM - 10 PM SATURDAY 7 AM - 10 PM & SUNDAY 8 AM - 10 PM 28 Explore Your New Brunswick Travel Guide

29 homes as well as their own. In 1879 the first train ran on the new St. Martin's Hampton Railway. This proved to be a money-losing venture as the track ran north-west to Hampton rather than to Saint John- the natural commercial centre nearest St. Martin's 1940 saw the end of railway service to the village. A disastrous fire on May destroyed over 68 buildings in the village - many of them the finest examples of Victorian architecture to be found anywhere. St. Martins was incorporated by an Act of the New Brunswick Legislature on November 9, Over the past decade, St. Martins has become known as one of New Brunswick`s most beautiful seaside vacation resort communities. The Village is a magnet for artists and photographers wishing to capture the unspoiled beauty of the area. A small community of artisans produce pottery, paintings and sculptures. And, there area growing number of unique shops and galleries. Opportunities for hiking, walking, biking, birdwatching, rockhounding, and beachcombing are all within steps of excellent dining and a range of accommodation in campgrounds, cottages, B&Bs, and country inns.
