2 Traditions of SAINT JOHN In this issue of See and Beyond we celebrate the uniqueness and traditions of and the surrounding area. is long on history after all, we just celebrated 230 years of being Canada s oldest incorporated city on May 8, 205! Most of us like traditions; they remind us of where we came from and hold a special meaning or memory. Many of our residents have started to re-establish traditions like the market at Queen Square and music at the bandstand in King Square. Then of course we have the newer traditions like Buskers on the Bay (formerly Buskers on the Boardwalk) celebrating 25 years in July and Marathon By-The-Sea celebrating 2 years of tradition this August. 2 SEE SAINT JOHN & BEYOND SUMMER 205 Pete s Pub, located in the Pedway between Brunswick Square and Market Square known locally as the smallest pub in New Brunswick is celebrating 30 years of great service. Pete is known for his hospitality in making out-of-town guests feel welcome. During the 204 curling championships, Pete held an honorary dinner for the Scottish Team, along with their family and friends. Drop into Pete s Pub for a cold Moosehead product and get a taste of his hospitality first hand! So come out and join in the fun, take a scenic drive or participate in some of our events, and maybe you will start a new tradition for you and your family! ~ Carmel Vivier, Editor 8 Traditions Legend Parking Trinity Royal Preservation Area Visitor Inside One-way Information Connection Traffic Centre Pedway System Summer 205 Vol.4 No. EDITOR & PHOTOGRAPHER Carmel Vivier...carmelv@nbnet.nb.ca DESIGN & LAYOUT Corey Dickinson...corey.dickinson@rogers.com SENIOR ACCOUNT MANAGER & DISTRIBUTION Wendy Morton... sales@seesaintjohn.com PUBLISHER Marshall L. 5 a City of Traditions... By the time this issue of See and Beyond is published, The Marigold Project will have celebrated 8 years on June 4, 205 when over,000 students from over 50 schools will have planted over 40,000 marigolds in locations between St. Stephen to Sussex, New Brunswick. In 99 Marigolds on Main Street started out with students from local schools gathering each June to plant marigolds along Main Street in as part of a beautification project. The whole venture continues to evolve each year and is now known as The Marigold Project. In 203 it was recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the most youth planting flowers at one time 34 locations and 40 schools took part and this year they broke that record! This past May, celebrated 230 years of being Canada s oldest incorporated city on May 8, 205. This date coincides with the landing of the Empire Loyalists from the United States in our harbor back on May 8, 83 a total of about 0,000 Loyalists landed that year. Each year as part of our tradition we celebrate Loyalist Day on May 8th in honour of Empire Loyalists who landed on our shores. Loyalist Day is probably one of our oldest traditions. New Brunswick Canada s Picture Province New Brunswick has five distinct scenic drives that make exploring our area easier and will convince you why we are called Canada s Picture Province. In the area, you can experience New Brunswick s Fundy Coastal Drive, a 460 km (286 mi) drive that takes you from St. Stephen in the west (at the New Brunswick/Maine border) to Aulac in the east (at the New Brunswick/Nova Scotia border). Here you will discover one of the most unique bodies of water on the planet earth the Bay of Fundy. Holding title to the highest tides in the world, twice daily the tides rise and fall in the Bay of Fundy pushing an estimated 00 billion tonnes of salt water from St. Andrews through to Chignecto Bay and in certain places rising as high as a four storey building. The rich nutrients in this ever changing water attracts many species of whales some say more whales species can be found here than in any other single location worldwide. In 200, the western side of the upper Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick was selected by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve. The Fundy Biosphere Reserve stretches from the St. Martins area all the way to the head of the Bay of Fundy and its salt water marshes, and encompasses 432,30 hectares. On October 3, 200, Southern New Brunswick became home to Stonehammer Geopark, the very first North American member of the UNESCO supported Global Geoparks Network (GGN). Stonehammer covers 2500 square kilometres of land from Lepreau Falls in the west, east to Norton, and Grand Bay-Westfield and from the Fundy Trail in St. Martin s to the Kingston Peninsula. It incorporates more than 60 significant geological and fossil locales, and its natural landscape has significant scientific value because it is particularly rare, but also it is simply beautiful. Just follow the lighthouse sign for the Fundy Coastal Drive you can watch for whales breaching off the coast, discover fossil-filled mudflats, play on coastal islands and visit our unique cities, towns and villages along the way! Oh, and let s not forget our free ferry services. New Brunswick is home to seven free cable ferries on the Lower St. John River (Gagetown, Bellisle Bay, Evandale, Westfield, Kennebecasis Island, Gondola Point and Summerville/Millidgeville). You can still get a free ferry ride on Passamaquoddy Bay too if you are visiting Deer Island, part of the Fundy Coastal Drive. Take the less travelled path this summer and try one of our free ferry rides the scenery will astound you and all it will cost you is a little time! Another tradition is celebrating St. Patrick s Day in March of each year. Between 85 and 86 more than 50,000 Irish immigrants landed in New Brunswick (most of them on Partridge Island); by 850, the Irish Catholic community was s largest ethnic group. An Irish immigrant from County Kildare, Michael Flood, started what is now the oldest continuous running construction in Canada now known as John Flood & Sons (96) Ltd. The current management is the fifth generation of the Flood family to operate the company. A couple of prominent buildings built by Flood include Caverhill Hall (corner of Sydney and Mecklenburg Street) and the Byzentine-style Church of the Assumption (West ). 8 SEE SAINT JOHN & BEYOND SUMMER 205 SUMMER 205 SEE SAINT JOHN & BEYOND 9
