4 SPECIALITY CAMPS SPORT... The emphasis on excellence that characterises Village Camps sports programmes is perfectly demonstrated by the exceptional Tennis Camp in Leysin in the expert hands of the professional instructors from the renowned California Tennis Academy. Leysin is also the base for our Multi-sports programme offering a variety of outdoor and indoor team and individual sports. Every morning there is something new offered by our team of counsellors and coaches. Surfing under the sunny blue skies of the Andalucia coast of Spain is the latest introduction to the sports selection. Surfing takes place on the unspoiled, pristine white sandy beach just 10 minutes drive from the centre. Another winner! THE ARTS Performing and Creative inspiring those campers with an artistic flair keen to develop their creative skills. The Leysin-based Dance Camp is a unique experience with the dancers fully involved with choreography, choosing music and developing a variety of routines aimed to give a great performance to the whole camp on the last night. The fascinating Film Academy was established at our Camp in Austria many years ago but its popularity has led to a second Academy in Leysin. The Academies are directed by professional film makers and cover every aspect of film making, production, lighting and much more right to the final edited film. Junior Adventurers having fun The Creative Arts Camp offers a great choice of different mediums in painting, drawing, sketching, ink doodles, clay sculpture, plaster and masks, a group canvas, theatre sets and costume-making. The young artists work in the fully-equipped artroom as well as sunny days spent in the beautiful grounds of QE College. Over the years Village Camps has had outstanding specialists to teach singing, dance and drama, the three disciplines that make up our Performing Arts course. 5 AFTERNOONS, EVENINGS AND THE WEEKEND Speciality Camps always operate every weekday morning for about 3 hours (Session A & B) usually with a short break. Some camps have occasional activities that last all day and others consistently use the first of the two afternoon sessions. Full details are available on our website. AFTERNOONS are divided into two sessions (C & D) with every camper able to choose activities from the generous choice available in each of our locations for either session C & D or just Session D (except for the occasional activity that takes campers on some programmes away from camp for the day). EVENINGS at every location there are exciting, comprehensive activities that keep campers engaged every evening. Sometimes the activity is arranged for a particular age group but many are All-Camp activities for everyone please refer to the pages for each country (see Index). WEEKEND EXCURSIONS are a major highlight for campers. There is usually one full-day and one half-day excursion. We always offer interesting destinations with a mix of shopping, free time and cultural visits with plenty to enjoy - please refer to the pages for each country (see Index). 6 LANGUAGES ENGLISH - FRENCH - GERMAN - SPANISH Village Camps has developed a completely new and ingeniously crafted language-learning programme designed to fully engage the campers. An exciting range of projects, tasks and games will attract the interest and ensure the involvement of every camper. They are having fun together in small groups and will soon be using the words and phrases that they have been learning each day. A NEW AND COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WAY TO TEACH LANGUAGES Campers really enjoy learning to speak the target language together New tasks, games and interesting projects are arranged throughout the course Groups of students help choose preferred lively projects Emphasis is on gaining confidence and improving vocabulary CHOOSING THE PROJECTS AND TOPICS We encourage the campers to choose projects in discussion groups which make language-learning more interesting and personal Other times the Language Coordinator and the teaching team prepare projects from an innovative selection designed for the campers to enjoy Campers often choose something that simply interests them, a topic of the day or some element of the culture of the country. SOME TYPICAL PROJECTS 06 The following are used as a guide and may vary from country to country. Each project has different levels of difficulty and appropriate vocabulary. Personality poster - on the first morning the campers make up a personality poster about themselves and use adjectives that they think describes their personality. A great way to get to know new friends and to take the first steps in language learning. The Great Survival Debate is an imaginary debate on the camping equipment and other items necessary for survival in the desert. Everyone has to discuss the issues and learn the vocabulary. 'The Food Tasting Festival' encourages campers to learn words to describe food smell, texture and flavours. The reward for learning the vocabulary is to taste some delicious traditional dishes of the country bought by the teachers! They love it! The Song Project campers choose a contemporary well-known song BUT together make up some humorous new words that will change the lyrics maybe describing the food in camp, early bedtimes, etc!! Holiday Brochure the group discusses and selects holiday destinations finally designing a brochure on the country of their choice. Film Project campers decide on an original idea, write the script, design a film poster and then go out and actually shoot a brief film using Village Camps cameras.

7 MAKING THE PROJECTS WORK Every morning starts with a warm-up in the language with teachers and campers talking together and a song in the target language playing in the background. The teachers introduce the campers to tongue-twisters and word games such as Scrabble. Teachers start conversations in groups about what they liked about the previous day, their favourite music and the activities to which they are looking forward. Learning vocabulary in an inter-group way using new words talking as a group about past and future projects and later working on projects in groups, or on their own as they gain confidence At the end of all projects the groups present their results often presenting one of their products (e.g. the film, travel brochure or a song). LANGUAGE LESSONS - INFORMATION On the first morning of camp students are carefully assessed and placed into groups of about 7-10 campers according to ability and then age. There are 4 ability levels: beginner/elementary pre-intermediate intermediate upper intermediate/advanced We operate a continuous assessment system at our language camps, consequently students may be moved at any time as they progress. Lessons are Monday to Friday for 3 hours from to with a short mid-morning break of about 10 minutes. At the end of camp, certificates are awarded to each student and a full progress report is sent independently to each family. SPECIAL NOTES In Leysin, Switzerland the language courses can be combined with Tennis Camp (see page 11). In Lakefield Camp, Canada the language and activity programmes are operated by our partners who offer ESL courses for 10 or 15 hours and link them with activity programmes. In Toronto City, Canada the ESL language programme is operated by our partners. On both Canadian programmes further detail are available from the Village Camps website or the office. In York, England for students who do NOT wish to take the speciality English programme, Village Camps operates an add-on programme during the afternoon period at a supplementary cost. 8 ADVENTURE ACTION-PACKED OUTDOOR CHALLENGES AT OUTSTANDING LOCATIONS IN SWITZERLAND, AUSTRIA, FRANCE, ENGLAND AND SPAIN Village Camps is one of Europe s most experienced outdoor adventure operators, organising successful adventure camps since the early 1970s. Today our adventure and activity programmes are more popular than ever, attracting hundreds of campers each year to learn new skills in mountains, rivers, lakes and the blue waters of the Mediterranean. Of course each programme has its own unique specialisations but all the camps have common features too. We ensure that there is a careful balance between testing activities that demand hard work, skills and intensive application mixed in with days for team-building, orienteering and basic survival techniques. SWITZERLAND LEYSIN Ages The alpine village of Leysin is the perfect centre for an adventure programme. It stands on a sunny southfacing shelf with walks, trails and paths through alpine summer pastures into the mountains above. Working from our Leysin base the adventure outdoor activities usually include nature trails, rock-climbing, hiking, mountain-biking, a ropes course, essential survival skills, white-water rafting (15+) and more. For indoor activities Leysin has two state-of-the-art Sports Centres with a mouth-watering choice of sports and leisure activities. The undoubted highlight of the two-weeks is the scenic trek high into the mountains to stay overnight at a traditional, authentic mountain hut at Lac Lioson above the alpine village of Les Mosses. Here campers will enjoy cooking dinner and eating al fresco around the camp-fire before playing fun team games and swopping stories amongst much laughter. For further information on Leysin see Pages Back from a great morning on Lake Zell - Austria ENGLAND YORK Ages Mountain biking - gentle descent back to camp The Adventure Camp is a great mix of thrilling activities using the rugged moorland hills, rivers and lakes of the challenging Yorkshire Moors as well as the vast open spaces and wooded areas in the grounds of our base at Queen Ethelburga s College. Off-site activities include canoeing and kayaking, a ropes course, a climbing wall, rock-climbing, abseiling and a thrilling gorge walking experience. Back at the Queen Ethelburga s Campus the activities include a testing session on the superbly designed Assault Course, a survival skills course, a hike along the nearby River Ouse and a fun water challenge session. The vote for the highlight is for the overnight camp under canvas in glorious moorland surroundings. 9 ADVENTURE Cook-out high in the Swiss Alps at Lac Lioson AUSTRIA ZELL AM SEE AGES The pretty village of Piesendorf is just a short drive from the internationally famous resort of Zell am See situated on the shores of the beautiful lake. High above are stunning mountains dominated by the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier. This is an amazing base for our action-packed mountain and lake adventure which contrasts with a variety of team sports back at the hotel in Piesendorf! One of the early thrills is the sailing and kayaking on the lake where campers learn new skills under the watchful eye of the qualified instructors. In the spectacular mountains around Zell campers will be introduced to rock-climbing, a ropes-course, trekking and mountainbiking on challenging descents in glorious scenery. Here at Zell we again feature a popular overnight stay in a mountain hut with a campfire and cook-out. This great experience shares highlight status with the thrilling watersports on the lake. After all the busy action of the lake and mountain activities campers enjoy some chill time back at Piesendorf with tennis, swimming, football, basketball, volleyball and other fun team games. 10 ...ADVENTURE FRANCE Ardeche Ages The Ardèche and its famous gorge set amongst the green forests, blue skies and summer sunshine of the South of France is a dream location. And Village Camps owns and manages its own delightful site in a spectacular situation right on the River Ardèche! The terrain above the river and close to our camp is forested and mountainous and here campers are introduced to rock climbing, caving, a ropes course and trekking. Of course, everyone is soon focused on the highlight the dream 30km breathtaking 2-day descent of the river through the stunning scenery of the Ardèche Gorge. Part of the excitement is an overnight half-way stop with a camp-out in bivouacs and a cook-out on the banks of the river. From the start of camp everyone will have worked on their canoeing and kayaking techniques on the river with our expert, qualified instructors. It s worth the effort as even beginners get to make the thrilling descent. This really is a quite unforgettable experience! BUT please note that camp capacity is only 50 campers. For further information on the Ardèche see Pages SPAIN Chiclana DE LA FRONTERA AGES The thrilling Ardèche descent A short 10-minute drive takes campers to our beach base on the pristine white sands and clear blue Atlantic waters of the Playa de la Barossa. The Adventure Camp makes good use of the beach for many of its activities including swimming and beach volleyball as well as an introduction to surfing, snorkelling, kayaking, boogie boarding and learning to master the art of stand-up paddling. Away from the beach campers will stay busy with mountain biking and hiking trails through a shady Eucalyptus forest close to camp. Other skills will be gained on the ropes course as well as climbing, abseiling and archery. Back at our accommodation there will be opportunities to use the fine Olympic-size swimming pool, two artificial climbing walls, a 200 meter zip line and basketball courts with football pitches close by. The course objective is to introduce campers to new sports and to encourage them to further develop existing skills in both team and individual sports. 12 ...SPORTS Warming up at the Outdoor school at Follifoot, York Drills on the air-conditioned courts at QE College, York One of the fun sports options - Tug-of-War - sometimes a serious business! FOOTBALL IN YORK, ENGLAND AGE Learn to play better football on this serious but fun Camp designed to improve individual skills and awareness levels. Our aim is to make every aspiring footballer a better team player. Exceptionally high standards have been set by our enthusiastic top coach, Neil O Donnell, Village Camps Football Director for the past 8 years. The playing area has been transformed with new state-of-the art pitches that are floodlit to a professional standard. Our coaching team uses the practice areas, 5-aside and full size pitches for 3 hours of instruction every weekday morning. The players are divided into age and ability groups. The dedicated coaching team work hard and enthusiastically to develop individual skills and techniques. Towards the end of the morning session there are usually popular, short competitive games where players, their skills and team tactics are assessed and discussed. The highlight of the football camp is the much anticipated Big Match when Campers play the Coaches & Counsellors for the Village Camps Cup. Every camper eagerly awaits the visit to Manchester to visit Old Trafford, Manchester United, OR the Ethiad Stadium, Manchester City with the campers making the choice. See pages for more information on York 12 BASKETBALL IN YORK, ENGLAND AGE This well established intensive but fun coaching programme is suitable for all abilities from enthusiastic beginners right through to talented, established players. Instruction is on weekdays with 3 hours in the morning and a further 90 minutes in the afternoon. The expert coaches put players through an assessment exercise so that everyone plays in the appropriate ability group. Throughout the course each player is re-assessed each day so that improvers are identified and promoted. One of the highlights is the end-of-session, much anticipated and keenly contested basketball match between the Campers and the Counsellors. QE College has unrivalled facilities for basketball, exclusively available in the summer months to Village Camps. The camp enjoys a quite magnificent on-site fully air-conditioned basketball arena, purpose-built for basketball training, matches and competitions. Village Camps engages a small, select team of highly qualified, top international European coaches. In 2016 another successful English-speaking professional coach from Serbia, Max Gvozdenovic, was the highly successful and popular Director of Basketball Coaching. He and the team provided outstanding instruction and have been re-appointed for 2017 so we and our basketball campers look forward to another great summer of basketball. 13 GOLF IN YORK, ENGLAND AGE Learn the game or improve your handicap at a friendly parkland golf course close to camp with excellent facilities and targeted lessons from a top teaching professional. This much-acclaimed, intensive golf camp is for golfers of all abilities who either want to make a great start to learning the game or already play golf but want to make rapid improvement. Lessons are held every weekday morning from about through to at the beautiful 18-hole Easingwold Golf Club. Next summer will be our 9th year working with our much admired, long-time Advanced PGA professional golf instructor, Alastair Grindlay who has over 20 years as a top teaching professional. Our young golfers play on this delightful course and also use the excellent additional facilities. Amongst these is a high quality covered 8-bay modern driving range, a new wellequipped indoor teaching unit, Mind Factor teaching facility and Flightscope, a sophisticated teaching aid that analyses and improves the swing. The highlight of the course is the Village Camps Golf Championship' on the penultimate day when all the young golfers compete on the full 18-holes using their new handicaps. See pages for more information on York SPORTS Golf camp - safely out of the sand-trap at Easingwold Golf Club, York Horse Riding in York, England AGE This will be the 5th year working with Follifoot, a long established successful family run Riding Centre with excellent outdoor and indoor facilities and pretty country trails. The friendly, experienced instructors, under the guidance of the owner, Julie Pedley, use a caring and patient approach encouraging beginners to progress with confidence. More experienced riders, right up to advanced and competition standards, will improve their skill and confidence under impressive professional guidance. The Centre offers a sensible choice of well prepared horses to suit everyone. Lessons are from to on Monday to Friday. For the beginners and less experienced riders the time spent on horseback will be about one hour at the start and as the course progresses riding time will be increased. For more experienced riders the aim will be to spend about 90 minutes actually riding. Beginners and intermediates progress with walking, trotting, cantering then jumping logs and eventually small fences. As a break from lessons, campers will enjoy fun competitions and pony games! Experienced riders will be taken through a more advanced programme. In addition, campers will also learn about the care of horses, tacking up and stable husbandry. On the last morning, a highlight of the course will be the fun individual and team games and competitions followed by the presentation of rosettes. We include the cost of the official test for the ABRS Assessment & Certificate where an independent instructor will test each rider and give an official grading with a Certificate. See pages for more information on York SURFING IN Chiclana DE LA FRONTERA, SPAIN AGE Summer 2017 will be the second year of both the Surf and Adventure programmes using the uncrowded and unspoiled Costa de la Luz coast. A short 10-minute drive takes surfers to our base with the expert local surf school using the pristine white sands and clear blue Atlantic waters of the Playa de la Barossa. Enthusiastic instruction takes place for 3 hours on each weekday morning with our young surfers learning quickly and making significant progress over the 2-weeks. It is a thrilling experience for campers new to surfing or for those who are experienced regulars. The beach is perfect for just chilling out, leisurely beach games or taking advantage of the many other beach and water facilities available. These include swimming, beach volleyball snorkelling, kayaking, boogie boarding and learning to master the art of stand-up paddling. 14 CREATIVE & PERFORMING ARTS AN INNOVATIVE CHOICE OF BUSY PROGRAMMES EXPERTLY DESIGNED TO INSPIRE AND CHALLENGE CAMPERS WITH ARTISTIC FLAIR WHO WANT TO DEVELOP THEIR SKILLS OR FOR OTHERS WHO ARE INTERESTED ENOUGH TO GIVE ONE OF THESE FASCINATING CAMPS A FIRST TIME TRY FILM ACADEMY, DANCE, CREATIVE ARTS AND PERFORMING ARTS. FILM ACADEMY IN ZELL AM SEE & LEYSIN, SWITZERLAND AGE There s a choice of locations for the Film Academy Austria or Switzerland! This Film Academy was successfully developed as part of our Austrian programme for many years. It became so popular that a second Academy was opened in Leysin Switzerland where it is now firmly established. Under the direction of an experienced producer the campers, using everyone at camp as the cast, learn the basics of film making starting with an original script before moving on to filming, editing and directing. The instruction programme embraces all the essential technical processes including sound, lighting, special effects and production. The young film makers collaborate with the producer to develop a script, produce a storyboard and select locations. Then it s time for the last tasks the final shoot, editing, choosing the music and introducing the effects for the soundtrack and dubbing. Everyone involved in the team works on the project every morning and from time to time in the afternoons and evenings too. It s dedication, fun, team work and sheer enthusiasm from campers happy to use their energy, creative instincts and emerging technical skills to produce a completed film from start to finish. This is a very satisfying conclusion especially when you get home and receive a link to access the final movie on the Village Camps Google Drive channel. See pages for more information on Zell am See See pages for more information on Leysin 14 A scene from the Gala Presentation from the Performing Arts team in York DANCE CAMP IN LEYSIN, SWITZERLAND AGE A programme designed for campers who want to create, rehearse and ultimately perform at camp. The enthusiasm of returning campers and the ongoing success of this programme is substantially down to the popularity of our very experienced, highly qualified Dance Coordinator. She delivers an outstanding dance experience, exploring many different types and styles of the dance repertoire. The programme runs for 3 hours every weekday morning. From the very start the specialist dance teachers and the young dancers work together to jointly develop their routines, choose the music, frame the choreography and rehearse enthusiastically in the build up to the show. Each endof-session show is a complete one-off with the campers individual ideas, music, moves and dances underpinning the performance. For many it will be the first time that they have used their skills to collaborate as a creative team. 15 CREATIVE & PERFORMING ARTS An appreciative audience applaud the Performing Arts campers Hard at work on a project in the art-studio Performing Arts in York, England Age A brilliantly conceived and popular programme bringing together drama, dance, music and singing! The course has been skilfully designed to improve individual performance, encourage teamwork and is suitable for enthusiastic participants of all abilities. This consistently successful programme will be directed by a highly experienced team. We draw from drama and production specialists, singing teachers, musicians and a dance coach. The team works on developing the main skills of each camper but everyone is encouraged to work in all three disciplines. During the first few days ideas are discussed and the campers, working with the teaching team, agree on a basic theme. So, the first step has been made on the journey to the much anticipated end-of-session theatre production. The young performers are shaped into a slick team with everyone participating. Actors, actresses, singers and dancers - all have the chance to shine and step into the spotlight. Working closely with our experienced teaching team the young artists learn about the inner workings of theatre production, stagecraft, stage production, scenery, makeup, costuming, the role of humour and voice projection. The rehearsals take place in the state-of-the-art College Theatre with its large stage, rehearsal rooms, storage for props, professional lighting and impressive acoustics. The main theatre is air-conditioned with over 300 seats for the all-camp audience. Finally, it s time for what all the players have been waiting for the fullon stage production of the original concept, created by the campers themselves in the first few days. See pages for more information on York CREATIVE ARTS IN YORK, ENGLAND AGE A successful, established and highly original programme encouraging campers to explore, create and express themselves in a wide range of art forms under the expert guidance and professional instruction of our accomplished art educator. This programme is dedicated to developing, stimulating and inspiring creativity in the Visual Arts for youngsters with any level of talent from curious beginners to experienced artists. The art group works either in the well-equipped Art Studio or in the plein-air amongst the flowers and gardens and sculptures of the extensive College grounds. The campers loved the half-day visit to the newly refurbished and quite amazing York Art Gallery with exciting exhibits and hands-on projects in which our young artists participate. Creative Art is a diverse subject that may slightly vary from summer to summer. However, to give a flavour of this sparkling adventure in art, here are just some of the highlights, challenges and unusual tasks from 2016 that fascinated the campers! TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF COURSE HIGHLIGHT DAYS This challenge for a typical team-building day is based at an outdoor adventure centre and starts by using ropes and poles in rough terrain, raft building and constructing a temporary bridge - all part of an exercise to use speed, initiative and the skills of the team to simulate the rescue across water of an injured pilot from a crashed (real!) plane. For the camper teams fast, accurate decisions have to be made on-the-spot in a life-death situation. The dramatic challenge vividly illustrates what a team can achieve by working together. Brilliant!
