5 Why Marine? Your first line of defence. Absorbent pads and rolls for spill capture, socks to encircle the spill and pillows to aid in concentrated clean-up and of course, booms are a staple of prevention as both a barrier and bulk absorbent. For onboard use there are also granules that soak up internal spills in an efficient manner and the ranges of Spill Kits that meet all SOPEP requirements. Our belief in Spill Kits is that they should always be considered as an emergency response tool for a situation or incident. Contents should be complete and ready for deployment and not be used on a daily basis. But the same absorbents that do such excellent service in an Emergency Spill Kit also serve a common purpose for regular maintenance and oil clean-up. A well trained crew who understand and frequently use the equipment in both training and response situations offers huge benefits for safety and operations. Although we focus on oil-only products across our Marine range, Lubetech have other absorbents in the range to absorb a full range of fluids, even aggressive chemicals. If the requirement to prevent fluid contamination includes water (machinery or electronic spaces are a prime example), or the clean up involves a chemical that needs careful handling, you have alternative absorbents in our Maintenance and Chemical ranges that can be deployed in an identical manner. Our oil-only socks absorb hydrocarbons but not water making them ideal for use when a spill needs to be surrounded and absorbed. Inherently flexible, the socks are perfect for placement around leaking pumps or machinery to collect oil. Pillows are your first choice for use when you need higher, more concentrated absorption capacity in any area which is hard to reach. With their large surface area, our pillows substantially reduce spill clean-up time. 12 ABSORBENTS SWEEP & POM-POMS The absorbent Sweep is drawn over the surface of the water to absorb thin sheens or surface oil spills. With integrated straps making it very easy to use, it is the ultimate product to use when cleaning up spills or creating barriers - our latest sweep is re-inforced and even stronger, enabling towing at higher speed. Our Pom-Poms are constructed from thousands of polypropylene strands, creating a high surface area absorbent. Originally developed to absorb Bunker C, Crude and 4, 5 & 6 type oils, Lubetech Pom-Poms also collect thicker and coagulated oils for use on beaches and under cold weather conditions. As with all of our oil-only Lubetech products, the Pom-Poms are hydrophobic so they retain flotation capability on water even after absorption of oils, enabling easier collection. 14 ABSORBENTS GRANULES The XR70 cellulose absorbent granules are extremely effective for interior oil spills. Light weight and fire retardant to BS 476 Part 7 Class 1, easy handling and safety is guaranteed. Our XR60 mineral-based (attapulgite) absorbent granules are all-round clean-up tools for indoor or outdoor use. Chemically inert and suitable for any type of spill, they retain high crush-resistance even when saturated. With high bulk-density for use under windy conditions. Cellulose XR77 granules perform a similar function to oil-only absorbents, collecting fuels and oils while retaining buoyancy. Cellulose granules are fully biodegradable, aiding disposal. Current legislation demands effective spill response. It is clear that the revision of MARPOL regulations announced by IMO for 2014/2015 will focus attention on a proactive requirement to prevent spills. Increasing priority is now required to enhancing practices, procedures and capabilities to prevent spills before they occur, and prompt measures to contain an incident. Booms take a variety of forms but the inflatable type is a core product, ideal as your first line of defence. Use as a companion to bunkering or loading/unloading operations. During storage the occupy a minimal volume when deflated or packed away. Skimmers are the current standard in spill collection. Providing not only efficient collection at a substantial rate, but also the ability to deal with a variety of oil densities. Requiring no ancillaries such as air blowers, they are quickly installed with a minimal number of personnel. This type of Fence Boom is especially useful in locations where emergencies and spills do occur but where it is not possible to leave a boom deployed permanently and an inflatable boom would be unsuitable. 34 BOOMS CYLINDRICAL BOOMS Lubetech s range of Cylindrical Booms provide a more stable alternative to the standard Fence Boom. With better wave handling characteristics through tube-shaped foam flotation chambers. However, cylindrical Booms require trained handling and more storage space when not deployed. As with our Fence Booms, our Cylindrical booms are available in PVC and PU, in a variety of heights, alternative connectors, section lengths and various other options you can specify. This type of boom, often known as a sausage boom is more stable in windy or high current conditions, but conversely is more difficult to store when not in use. Therefore Lubetech also offer various types and styles of Inflatable boom. 36 BOOMS BUNKER BOOMS For safety during ship to ship fuel transfers, Lubetech now offer our Bunker Booms. Paired as short, but extremely flexible barriers lowered between 2 vessels, the springiness of the boom allows expansion to create a seal between the vessels. Made from highly flexible belting material, Bunker Booms provide a far simpler, cost effective method of forming enclosed areas. In the event of a spill, immediate containment is provided with no requirement or delay for equipment deployed, preventing spilt fuel escaping. Suitable to meet all regulations, Bunker Booms are a highly visible indication of best practice where design of the boom and absence of fixed connectors retains the seal even with draft changes from bunkering. 37 DEBRIS BOOMS Debris booms are utilised for fixed installations, occasionally for long term deployment, or to prevent oil reaching sensitive areas. The Debris Boom from Lubetech is made from toughened rubber and fitted with removable plastic floats to provide long-term containment. Available with a wide range of accessories. This Debris Boom is a necessity around water intakes, pumping stations, waste outlets and other high risk areas, to allow immediate capture of any leaked hydrocarbon and small debris where zero response time is required. 38 BOOMS BEACH BOOMS When creating a barrier in intertidal or littoral waters, traditional booms can be unreliable and allow contaminants to pass. In these situations, we can offer a Beach Boom which is suitable for these areas. A Beach Boom consists of three chambers in a triangular shape. The lower 2 chambers are filled with water to provide stability and ballast, and the upper chamber filled with air to provide flotation. The strong seal of substrate is created by fins attached to the lower chambers. Beach Booms prevent any oil leaking underneath or around the boom until the water level rises, at which point the boom refloats and continues to provide a barrier. 40 SKIMMERS SKIMMERS Once you ve contained a spill using booms, the next step in the process is recovery. As oil naturally sits on top of the water column, a skimmer is the best way to do this. 41 DISC SKIMMER Disc Skimmers offered by Lubetech range from a simple skimmer with a single bank of Discs, through to a large and powerful system which contains four banks. Onboard suction pumps mean Disc skimmers are highly effective at collecting and recovering light oils. The Discs in the skimmer draw oil inwards, where oil is then scraped off into the hopper and pumped away. This system was first designed in the late seventies, and has proved to be one of the most efficient and effective ways of removing high concentrations of oil from the waters surface. 42 SKIMMERS ROPE MOP SKIMMER Rope Mop Skimmers recover lighter oils from large areas. Rope Mops can be up to 60m in length, and larger systems can handle up to 3 mops at one time. They can be deployed using rollers to travel through a large area, providing a partial barrier to the passage of oil. Along with land-based skimmer units, Lubetech also offers hanging rope mop systems for deployment over the side of response vessels, providing a range of solutions depending on the requirement. Absorbent mops used by Rope Mop Skimmers are deliberately designed with a twist to ensure the whole surface area meets the path of the mops travel. This increases the efficiency and recovery rate of the skimmer. 43 WEIR SKIMMER Weir Skimmers are the simplest method of removing oil from the water surface. The Weir skimmer is a floating lip, over which oil is pumped, providing an initial separation to remove as much oil from the surface of the water as possible. The weir is adjusted by changing the flow rate of the pump. Ancillaries such as power packs, are also offered, and the skimmer may be coupled with a pumping unit to offer a full package to deal with any spill. The skimmer can also be offered in various capacities, dependant on pumps which can be external or internal or even onboard a response vessel. 53 OILY WATER SEPARATOR The Oily Water Separator offered by Lubetech is an extremely effective design, available as a static unit for use onboard or on site, or as a trailered unit which can be towed behind vehicles. An ideal way to remove contaminated liquids from a site, maximising your storage capacity for the oils you recover, rather than wasting your storage capacity on unnecessary water. Especially important in offshore responses. 54 DISPERSANTS DISPERSANTS In certain spill situations, the traditional method of containment, recovery and storage may not be the most effective or sensible way of dealing with the incident.
