3 Customisation is King The great thing about Outwell tents is now you can customise them even further to suit exactly your needs. You may want to add a side or front extension, or a canopy, or have an additional storage tent alongside, or a bit of extra protection from the weather you name it, Outwell has the answer. outwell advise Give everyone some responsibilities. Even if it s just a rota for washing up, or checking the doors are closed before you drive off for the day, or planning the next trip out, cooking a meal... the opportunities are endless. Take your sense of humour. Like life, things aren t always going to be perfect on a camping holiday. But if you can see the funny side of things, you re guaranteed a great time. When it comes to camping innovation, nobody does it better than Outwell. For example, would you believe we pioneered the use of carpets in tents? Now, you can have the luxury of foot-warming, Wall-to-Wall Carpet in any of our tents for 2008 a real comfort bonus. Or you can add a Footprint literally, an extra groundsheet to protect the original and add extra insulation. As well as being available for all new Outwell tents, Carpets and Footprints are available for many earlier models. Here are some other useful optional extras we offer: Extensions and Canopies. Want to add an extra room for more living or storage space? An extension is the answer. Almost every Outwell tent is designed to take an extension or canopy sometimes both. This is quite simply our most brilliant innovation for the 2008 season, and your kids will love you for it. 4 Tents the Technical Bit There s a lot more to making tents and camping equipment than you think. For example, we have an extensive team of Designers and Developers working on new products and making sure everything that carries the Outwell name performs as well as it should. There are also a few things you should know about our tents and gear, as follows. What is Hydrostatic Head? This is a way of testing how waterproof a tent is. Material is subjected to testing that involves putting water in a pipe with the fabric stretched over the end. When there is sufficient water pressure to force droplets through the fabric determines the hydrostatic head figure for the tent and hence its level of waterproof-ness! For example, our exclusive Outtex 5000 fabric, as used on all tents in our Premium collection, has a hydrostatic head of 5000mm, which represents the level the material can withstand before 1cm 2 of water penetrates the surface. Testing for the Wind and Rain Nobody is going to pretend you won t get wind and rain at some point during your camping holidays. But, we do our very best to ensure the Outwell products you use can stand up to all weathers. For example, our testing includes an outdoor shower facility that can produce the equivalent of half a year s rainfall in just one hour. And we use a wind machine capable of replicating wind speeds of up to 120mph. Plus, we use real families to test our products out in the field and give us valuable feedback (see pages 8-9). There are lots of Key Outwell Features to Consider: OSG stand for Outwell Sealed Ground System (Sewn-in). Here, the groundsheet is an integral part of the tent, plus there s a step in at the doorway to prevent bugs and more making an easy way in to your tent. Outwell Space Frame System (OSF). Look out for this on tents such as our new Premium Idahos. The crossover frame design optimises standing room as well as allowing a large porch access. Outwell Extended Frame System (OEF). Still unique, this allows far greater high-level space in the bedroom. Find it on the new Hartfords in the DeLuxe Collection, for example. Outwell Guyline Retainer System (OGR). Simple, but so effective, this allows you to keep your guylines together and easy to hand when it comes to pitching. Our Universal Inner Tent with its zip-through dividers is still unique. There s great peace of mind in being able to get from one bedroom to the next by simply unzipping. Don t forget, you can replace any Universal Inner Tent with a Kids Room. Before you Purchase your Outwell Tent, Consider the Following: Size Remember, generally the larger the tent more time and energy you ll need to put it up. Who s going to help put up the tent? Some Outwell tents are designed for one person to erect them, but it s always helpful to have a few extra willing hands to help. Rooms Take into account the number of rooms, especially bedrooms, that you need. Plus, do you want the emphasis on a larger lounge area or more sleeping options? Weight All too easily forgotten, until you try lugging your packed tent around. Think about it! Pack size Again, just consider where you ll be storing your tent when it s not in use not forgetting your car. Groundsheet More and more people are choosing the Outwell Sealed Ground System. Material You ll love the ambience of our Classic and Comfort polycotton ranges. But don t forget, exclusive to outwell are also our very own Outtex fabrics ( ). Outwell Vent-View System (OVV). 5 Meet the Waters Family The Waters Dad Alan, Mum Sue and children Josie and George are just one of our test families who have been out there camping and proving our products as well as giving us valuable feedback. Last year saw them putting a wide range of Outwell gear to the test as they camped in the Lake District and Wales. As they put it: In general we found the equipment well designed with lots of innovative ideas to make the whole camping experience an even more enjoyable one. A lot of the features on the tent and other items of equipment are well thought out and designed to meet the needs of a modern camping family. Here are their key comments on some of the gear they ve been using. Vermont L Tent. Pitching is straightforward... no problems identifying and locating the correct poles... the video on the Outwell website was helpful in demonstrating how to put up the tent... one excellent feature of the Vermont is having the bedrooms and wardrobe already in place... the numerous organiser pockets in the main living area kept the tent tidy, making access to day-to-day items much easier... the OSG (Outwell Sealed Ground System) performed very well... the guylines can be quickly stored using the OGR (Outwell Guyline Retainer System). Carpet. This was a touch of luxury we had not experienced before. It gave the living area a warm and comforting feel as well as providing insulation and protection to the built-in groundsheet. Jamaica Wardrobe. This provided a very useful storage space, keeping together all the children s clothes and other bits and pieces... Putting together and taking down the Jamaica was straightforward, and is made easier if the shelves are left in place. Calgary Table. Very easy to put up... But, we would have preferred one of the Halifax tables for family use. Folding Chair Deluxe and Camper Deluxe. Comfortable, lightweight and easy to use... comes in a good, strong storage bag. Sleeping Bags (Cloud Convertible, Climate 1500, Cloud 1600, Contour 250). During most nights we all found our sleeping bags warm and comfortable... Generally, we liked the sleeping bags and found them very roomy and comfortable. Airbeds (Flock Classic King Size) and Self-inflating Mats. Very comfortable... We liked the carrier bags for the Mats. Hard Anodized Cook Set XL. An excellent set of cooking pans for a family camping trip. They were easy to clean, lightweight, compact and easy to store in the carrier bag. Melamine Picnic Set for 4 Persons. A very good set of plates, bowls and cups which functioned excellently. They were easy to clean, lightweight but still very strong. Sirius Lantern 20 LED. When hooked in the main living area of the tent the lamp provided sufficient light to see inside and move around... The remote control is a great feature. Saturn Headlamp. A comfortable and easy to use headlamp that performed well all holiday. Travel Bags (Escape XL and Traveller M). An excellent bag with masses of storage space and lots of useful features... The telescopic handle and the wheels would make it a very useful bag for flights and other holiday trips. Traveller M: Another excellent bag with lots of space... The zipped pockets were great for organising all our bits and pieces and the shoulder strap made it easy to carry. Pack Towel L. We all used these a couple of times when we showered and found they worked really well. Folding Basket. Really useful... Sue and Josie used it for carrying towels etc. to the showers. 14 Outdoor Cooking with Outwell outwell advise Take a bucket and keep it filled with water outside your tent. Buckets are brilliantly versatile. Use them for soaking soiled clothing, rinsing things out, washing things down and many other tasks, including any minor emergencies. Keep your tent well ventilated. Do keep the vents open wherever possible. It will help keep the tent comfortable during the day and restrict condensation to a minimum. Mmm, doesn t that barbecue just look great? Cooking outdoors is part of the whole camping experience. We can help you make the most of that with a huge range of cooking facilities from kitchen units to ultra-stylish melamine crockery, including tumblers, wine glasses and serving bowls from the Acryl Glass range. Make Your Own Burgers How about this for an easy DIY burger recipe? Buy some local mince, preferably with some fat in it. Chop an onion finely. Combine it with the mince and mould it into burgers to go direct onto the barbecue. Add any seasoning you wish from salt and pepper to herbs to chilli. Mixing in an egg or some grated cheese also helps with the binding. Barbecue Well, Barbecue Safely Just a few quick tips if you re going to make the most of your barbecue. 1. Make sure your barbecue is a safe distance from your tent as well as any area where children may be playing. Use your Outwell Windscreen or even Sun Canopy if you want to protect your barbecue from the elements. 2. Always keep raw meat and fish apart from other ingredients. Keep the turning to a minimum, but do check to see that food is fully cooked all the way through. 3. Bugs can be attracted to the barbecue party. Keep em at bay with an Outwell mosquito Candle. And a Little Bit More... Trust Outwell to give you that little bit more. Check out our new ranges of coloured bottles in choice of half- or one-litre sizes. 15 Outwell Tent Tips All Outwell tents are designed with easy pitching in mind. Features like colour-coded poles, guylines that glow in the dark, heavy duty zips etc all help make things that bit easier. Nevertheless, we can all benefit from bearing in mind a few simple tips. Do you know there are three different key tent types? They are: Tunnel. Sturdy in all weather conditions, go for alloy or steel poles if you want the most rugged designs, or Durawrap or Duratec poles if you want your packed tent to be less bulky. Dome. Our new Hartfords, in the DeLuxe Collection, are typical examples of dome tents. Crossover main poles mean you can manoeuvre a dome for best pitch position while you are putting it up. Vis-à-vis style tents from Outwell include the Idahos in the Premium Collection, where two rooms oppose each other across the entranceway. Don t forget also our Cabin tents they re great ways of adding extra living and/or storage room when you re on-site. We recommend to set-up the tent on an Outwell Footprint (PE mat) Luminous guyline Outwell Camping Mallet and Tarzan Rock Pegs Outwell Tent Tips Practise putting up your tent before you go away. Regard this as an essential it s far better you learn about putting your tent up and packing it away initially from the comfort of your own home. Make sure your tent is well ventilated. Often, people think their tent is leaking whereas in fact what they ve spotted is condensation, due to lack of air circulation. Especially, try and keep your tent well ventilated at night. Try not to touch the inside of your flysheet (i.e. the outer wall of your tent), as this can cause rainwater to leak through. Avoid using sprays such as insecticides inside any tent. This applies to ordinary household items like hairsprays, too. When striking camp (i.e. taking down your tent), try and ensure it s as dry as possible. If it s not completely dry, take it out again when you get it home and let it fully air before packing it way. This will help prevent mildew and, in worst cases, material rotting. Consider using rock pegs or U-pegs if you think the ground may be hard or the weather s going to be especially windy. We do not recommend that you cook within any synthetic fabric tents but if this is necessary then please take the following precautions do not place cooking equipment close to the tent sides and ensure that there is good continuous ventilation. Do not allow children to play with or near lighted appliances. It is always useful to carry with you a repair kit as accidents or foul weather can ruin a great holiday. Your kit should include spare pole sections, guyline, pegs and a whole repair kit. Do not set-up the tent completely taut, otherwise it will not be able to adapt to varying wind and weather. If strong winds are expected, replace the normal tent pegs with storm pegs. Use a camping mallet to secure the pegs. Note that the tape over seams can work loose after repeated use. Please note that the tape may come off after prolonged exposure to the sun. You can repair your tent by removing loose tape and use a seam sealer and waterproof spray to re-seal seams. Remove dirt from the tent with a soft sponge and clean pure water. Never wash the tent in a washing machine and never have it dry-cleaned. The flysheet is made of water-repellent material.
