Preparation for Camp: The Greatness of Autism: Summer Stress has a list to give camp councilors about having a child with special needs in the program. The list is specifically about autism but can be applied to children with many disabilities. Day Camps: Interacting with People with Disabilities explains to treat people with disabilities courteously. Assisting People with a Disability explains how to assist people with disabilities courteously. Disability Discrimination Act explains the Disability Discrimination Act. Diabetes Camp (ages 5-13) day camp. Northern California Junior Sports Camp (ages 6-21) for wheelchair sports. This camp is for children with a physical disability; campers can attend the day camp or overnight. Playcamp (ages 5 and up) is a week long day camp through the Youth Therapeutic Recreation Program of the City of San Jose. It is designed for

2 children with disabilities who need a higher level of staff assistance for participation. Staff ration is approximately 1 to 2. Activities include arts and crafts, games, circle time and at least one field trip. Camps are held during the winter holiday season and during the summer. Capernam Summer Day Camp based at the Lighthouse, the day camp has daily activities around San Jose. x?id=148 Camp Superstuff (ages 6-12) Weeklong day camp for children who have asthma. YMCA of Silicon Valley (ages 4-15) runs inclusive day camps. Call (408) for more information. Quest Camp (ages 6-18) has day camp for children with behavioral, social or emotional difficulties. Children may have diagnoses of ADHD, anxiety, Asperger s Disorder, depression, learning disabilities or social problems. Abantey (ages 10-up) offers day camps for children interested in role-play games. The camps are also available for children with special needs. The Lighthouse Project Summer Camps (ages 4 and up) has day camps that provide special therapies for children with Asperger s syndrome, high functioning Autism, ADHD and ADĐ. Camp Chatterbox (ages 3-18) has day camp that focuses on social skills and speaking for children who have Autism, Apraxia of speech or other language challenges. &Itemid=29 ENRICHING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN WITH AUTISM (ages 3 up) has day camps that focus on skills for children with autism. Overnight Camps: San Jose Family Camp run by the San Jose Parks and Recreation, the camp has some wheel chair accessible platform tents.

3 Girl Scout Camps (ages 6-15) Bothin and Camp Metro accept girls with special needs who can function with a 1:8 adult/child ratio. Butano has some cabins with wheelchair ramps. See Parent Questions for further information. YMCA of Silicon Valley (ages 6 and up) has an inclusive policy that applies to its camps as well as day programs. Mini-Camps, for kids entering grades 2-3, is for 2 nights and has a low camper -staff ratio of 5:1; weeklong camps for older kids have a camper-staff ratio of 10:1; family camp is also available. Tuolumne Trails Camp, located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Yosemite, is a camp with housing, trails, pools, and other facilities that were designed to accommodate people with disabilities. The camp hosts a number of family camps for families with special needs; it is also open for groups to reserve and design their own program. Via West (formerly Camp Costanoan) (ages 5 and up) is a residential camp for children and adults with physical and/or developmental disabilities. It is nestled in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains in Steven's Creek County Park Camp St. Francis (ages 16-25) is a residential camp offered free of charge through the Francisican Workers of Salinas. It's held on a Monday through Thursday in late summer each year and the site varies. Camp is limited to 15 campers. Call for more information. Camp Altitude (ages 11-17) is a 2 week residential camp at Notre Dame de Namur for children social and cognitive challenges including Autism, Learning Diabilities, and ADHD). dxgb9zq Enchanted Hills (all ages with family; ages 8-18 for children only) camp for children who are visually impaired. Lions Wilderness Camp for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Located in Nevada City.

4 Camp Grizzly for youth who are deaf or hard of hearing. rizzly Camp Whispering Pines in Modesto (ages 5-25) is a community-based program that provides scholarships for children, students, and adults with special needs so they can enjoy a week of Summer Camp at our Whispering Pines Conference & Retreat Center near Sonora. Camp Harmon (ages 8-65) is a residential camp run by Easter Seals. campharmon Camping Unlimited (formerly Camp Krem) (ages 5-29) in the Santa Cruz Mountains is for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Camp Okizu pediatric cancer patients and their families can attend this residential summer camp in Novato. Camp Oasis (ages 7-16) at Lake Hughes is for children with Crohn s disease. Camp Ronald McDonald (ages 7 and up) at Eagle Lake hosts a variety of camps for children with special needs, including those with developmental delays, muscular dystrophy, and hearing loss. Taylor Family Foundation s Camp Arroyo offers free, weeklong summer camps for children with these and other medical conditions: Asthma, Autism, Bi Polar, Heart Disease, Epilepsy, Brain Tumors, Pediatric cancers, Hemophilia, Developmental Delays, Crohns, and other disabilities. The Painted Turtle Camp (ages 7 and up) in Lake Hughes, southern California, hosts camp weeks and weekends for those with liver and kidney transplants, Prade-Willi Syndrome, families with children served by Shriners Hospital, Rheumatic disease, Spina Bifida, Muscular Dystrophy, Chrohn s and Colitis, Hemophilia and Thalassemia, Skeletal Dysplasia (dwarfism), primary immunodeficiency, Asthma, and Diabetes.
