1 Knives Shell Extractors & Fixed Blade A logical addition to a sportsman s knife is a cartridge or shell extractor. Most are a fixed design for 12 and 16 gauge shells at the end of the knife handle. John Watts and the team of Joseph Westby and Charles Levick of Sheffield both came up with adjustable designs in In Watts patent one side of the extractor is fixed on the handle and a pivoting blade is used for the other side. Westby and Levick had a fixed 12 and 16 gauge extractor formed at the end of the handle but added a pivoting blade for other sizes. The pivoting tool also cuts wires.
