3 Who is SnigelDesign? SnigelDesign is an independent Sweden-based company, driven by a group of officers, designers and engineers who are passionate about elevating the quality and function of personal equipment for modern soldiers and law enforcement officers. Founded in 1990 by a military officer who later earned an MA in Industrial Design, the company is guided by a no compromise philosophy on function, quality and comfort. SnigelDesign is powered by passion. We design the products ourselves. We use them ourselves in the Swedish Army were we still are part time soldiers. Our experience, combined with our customers expertise, forms the basis for the improvements that we constantly make to our products. SnigelDesign is not big, so we can easier focus on you, the user, to give you the best possible products and service. We develop products because we want to use the best that can be made. We do not compromise with function or quality because we don t have to. We want the best and we want to offer that to you. What do we do? We design, manufacture and sell complete personal load carrying and protection systems, for police and military personnel. Design, development and general management is handled in Stockholm, Sweden, with scalable production in a range of dedicated locations. As an independent firm, we are able to set our own course and develop the types of products we feel set a next generation standard with zero bureaucracy. Currently, we supply or have supplied services and equipment to the Swedish, French and Norwegian Army, the Swedish, Italian, Belgian, French, Finnish, Norwegian and Danish National Police, a number of Special Forces and police tactical teams across Europe and the FBI HRT. We also develop and manufacture carrying equipment as a subcontractor for companies producing electronics or other types of products requiring protective covers, slings, bags and other carrying systems.

4 Our history Per-Henrik Magnusson, aka PH, is a military officer and load-carrying expert who is the founder of SnigelDesign. In 1977, at the age of 14, he designed and manufactured his first backpack a copy of the Swedish Army Backpack 35LK. Over the next 10 years, PH made more than 200 backpacks for friends and family as well as other people who had heard about them. Many of these packs are still in use today. In 1982, he served in the Swedish Army as an Airborne Ranger and later became a reserve officer. At age 52, he is still active as a home guard platoon commander in Sweden. During the 1980s, PH began to develop combat vests and different pouches for military use. These were tested during numerous missions both in Sweden and abroad, and changes were made continuously. In 1987 PH started his education to earn a Master s Degree in Industrial Design in Stockholm. The practical part in school included a six-month internship at the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) developing a very large backpack with a functional chest rig experience that later proved invaluable. He founded SnigelDesign in 1990 with an ambition to elevate the function and quality of load-carrying equipment for some of the most demanding defence applications. From 1991 to 2006, he worked as Head of Design and Product Management at Snickers work wear, in parallel with his dedication to SnigelDesign. Since 1998 SnigelDesign has developed most load-carrying systems, bags and pouches for the Swedish Army, including the new combat vest In 2004, SnigelDesign won the tender for the Swedish National Police equipment belt: We have supplied over of the belts to the Swedish police to date. In 2005 Anna as the first employee of the company started to take care of administration and customers. In 2006 Dick, a Marine NCO, joined PH as a partner with responsibility for a number of key customers, product training and also worked with development. In 2009 SnigelDesign won the tender for Tactical ballistic vest for the Swedish SWAT teams. In 2010 Heidi, our super sample maker and product developer started. Susse started in 2011 to help us take care of you, our customers. Tomas started in 2012, first with production but now he is responsible for our partners. In 2013, after more than 15 years of development we won the tender to supply the Swedish Army with our 120 litre backpack system. From 2008 to 2015 Kina worked here with design and pattern making in the product development department. In 2013 Sebastian started in our company to put in new ideas in our product development department. Carl joined the team in 2015 as CEO to boost our business skills and handle general management issues and Andreas to make logistics as professional as the rest of the company. There are currently 9 people in the company, Dick at training, R&D and direct sales, Tomas at partner sales, Carl as general manager, Andreas at logistics, Susse and Anna at customer service and finally PH, Sebastian and Heidi at R&D. We also work with a growing network of sales partners across Europe. Design philosophy Product development is the heart of our business. We are passionate about improving our products to make them as good as possible. Product development never stops, a product is never finished and it can always be improved. Introduction

5 Demands on personal loadcarrying equipment The evolution of modern armed conflicts is driving changes in the demands on the soldier s gear towards more complex, heavier equipment loads. Carrying more, not less Modern soldiers are increasingly required to carry more, not less. Typically, when an 80 kg soldier stands on a scale with his standard gear on, he weighs in at 125 kg, (45 kg of equipment). For longer field manoeuvres, he carries his large rucksack, weighing in at 145 kg (a whopping 65 kg of gear). Importance of system thinking From an ergonomic perspective, a soldier should not be carrying a load in excess of 30% of body weight. Unfortunately, this is seldom the case. As a result, there is an acute need for smarter, lighter systems that can be easily adapted for different missions, environments and threats. To cope with conflicting parameters, system thinking is required in order to ensure the optimal result: maximum comfort, safety and logistical efficiency. Modern personal equipment needs in brief Enhanced protection on all levels Modularity for adaptable, mission-specific solutions Intuitive, easy and fast Enable economical and practical logistics solutions Achieving heightened protection on all levels Protection from ballistic threats is a given, but in many cases the most severe dangers are heat, cold, rain and snow. Fire is a constant threat that must be countered. Also, it is vital to evade detection by visual or thermal sensors. Design parameters can be conflicting; measures to increase ballistic protection normally lead to increased weight and heat stress and decreased mobility as one example. Adapting for different missions and threats It is costly and impractical for modern fighting units to have separate systems for different conditions. It is also unnecessarily complicated to learn to use a lot of different pieces of kit properly. Instead, the need is for personal equipment that can be adapted and configured modularly for use in diverse missions in multiple environments. Minimizing restriction for the soldier Today, there is a greater need than ever to carry mission-specific equipment and move through various challenging terrains. Consequently, it is vital for the soldier to be able to move, hear and see as much as possible while wearing full combat gear. The load-carrying system must be as comfortable as possible. It must allow the head to move freely with ear defenders on, facilitate free movement of the arms and legs and let the soldier crawl, run and jump. Accommodate for all gear during all mission phases The dismounted mission, which forms the base for all development of personal equipment, is divided into stages: Transport to the mission area, planning, rehearsal, insertion, foot march, break, obstacle negotiation, rest-up base establishment, recon, mission execution, foot march, extraction, and post-mission briefing. Each stage places different demands on the personal equipment, so the various parts of the system must be designed for multiple purposes. The equipment must work for all types of soldiers and specialists: commander, radio operator, medic, sniper and more. Easy, intuitive, and fast to reach A fundamental criterion is that all equipment is placed so that it is easy to work with. Pouches, bags and backpacks must be easy to open and close, while still keeping contents securely stowed. It should be possible to do this silently, in the dark, wearing gloves. Sub-system compatibility It is not uncommon for the uniform to have been developed by one department, the vest by another, some pouches by the weapons division, the survival pouch by another and so on. In other words, the sub-systems are not necessarily designed to work together, making it difficult to optimize the soldier s personal equipment. For optimal results, the soldier must be treated as a holistic system where all parts work in concert. Someone must own the soldier and all interfaces, prioritize what should be carried and ensure a fully integrated, modular approach. Economical and manageable logistical solutions The amount of equipment the modern soldier needs to carry and the varying environments he or she is expected to work in has led to increased complexity and cost. This, in turn, creates a logistical burden for the chain servicing the troops, making it even more important to come up with smarter, modular solutions to minimize the number of components to be purchased, stored, distributed and serviced. 5

6 Our next generation loadcarrying solution Over the past 25 years, guided by a philosophy of uncompromising functionality, we have worked closely with numerous armed forces around the world to develop a truly forward-thinking approach. It is a modular system that provides an exceptionally high degree of flexibility for a wide range of threats and missions, and is available in colors and patterns suitable for most regions. For added clarity in the illustrations below, the component described in each section is shown in MultiCam, with the rest of the system in grey. Fully integrated clothing sub-system Designed with a holistic approach, the clothing sub-system comprises all the standard parts: underwear, insulation garments, combat shirt, trousers and jacket, all-weather trousers and jacket, lightweight shell trousers and jacket and various types of gloves and caps. All garments are designed to work together, as well as with the load-carrying and protection systems. The garments are worn in layers to suit the climate, and are cut to give greater freedom of movement and added mobility. They include large ventilation openings as well as pockets that are placed so they can be reached when worn with the carrying and protection systems. Knee and elbow pads are integrated into the garments for added comfort and protection. As one example of how the clothing and load-carrying systems work together, four pockets are placed on the lower trouser legs. This placement makes the kit easy to reach when kneeling, for instance when the medic is treating a wounded comrade. Load-carrying and protection sub-systems The SnigelDesign integrated ballistic protection and loadcarrying system can be adapted to provide basic protection to ensure maximum mobility and less heat stress, or for maximum protection with fewer demands on mobility, or all combinations in between. The vest comes in small, medium, and large to accommodate most body sizes. It can be closed with straps only in the side for maximum ventilation and lowest weight. For added protection, ballistic side pouches in three different sizes can also be attached. Equipment pouches can be attached to the straps or side panels. 6

7 Add-on ballistic protection For higher than normal threats, additional protection panels and hard plates can easily be attached to the standard vest. The added protection includes throat/neck, shoulder, upper arms and groin kits. For maximum protection, lower arms and full leg coverage can also be added. Pouches and holders The pouch system consists of a range of accessories that can be fitted to the vest, allowing an easily configurable load-carrying capability that can be tailored to the needs of the individual user. Many of the pouches can be attached either vertically or horizontally, making it easier to use the available space on the loadcarrying system. Some pouches are specifically designed to fit a certain piece of equipment, but most can be adapted for many types of gear. The opening and closing function of pouches must be carefully designed to meet conflicting needs. Not only must pouches be easy and fast to open, but equally easy to close to minimize the risk of losing equipment. The closing must also be secure to prevent accidental opening while running or climbing, for instance. On top of this, the opening needs to be silent, it must work while wearing gloves, in darkness and without looking at the latching mechanism. All SnigelDesign pouches are designed for swift and silent feel-only opening and closing, while keeping the content secure in all weather conditions. Zippers are stiffened to ensure snag-free operation, even when they are hard to reach. Backpacks and bags As part of the load-carrying system, we have developed various duffle and other bags for transport to the mission area. For the insertion phase a 120 or 90-litre rucksack are used. From base, a 40 or 25-litre detachable backpack is used, either on its own or attached directly to the vest. The mission packs are fitted with interchangeable inserts designed to meet the demands of various specialists, allowing users to carry the extra equipment required for a 24 to 48-hour mission. 7

8 Flexible usage in multiple configurations The next-generation personal equipment system is designed to be used in many configurations for various missions, climates and threats. A few examples are: Hot climate, medium risk Basic equipment for maximum mobility and low heat stress. Combat shirt, trousers, open sides plate carrier with front and back protection and a minimum amount of pouches. Temperate climate, high risk Typical configuration for high-risk tasks. Combat jacket and trousers, plate carrier with front, sides and back protection, yoke, sleeves and crotch kits added. Temperate climate, medium risk A heavier load for an extended period of time of operations requiring a mix of medium protection, more carrying capacity, less mobility and long endurance. Combat shirt, trousers, plate carrier with front and back protection, additional pouches and a detachable mission backpack mounted on a 120-litre rucksack. 8

9 DUTY GEAR System This system is for uniformed carrying and is based on our equipment belt and the various pouches mounted on the belt. It has been designed with safety, functionality and comfort in mind. Comfort Our belt is one of the most comfortable equipment belts in existance. It is padded and shaped to sit comfortably around the body, even when fully loaded. The pouches are mounted between the inner and outer belt so that no edges or hard surfaces press against the body. The padded inner belt has friction fabric facing inwards towards the body. This non-slip material helps to hold the belt in place, reducing the need to tighten excessively around the waist. Availability The pouches are designed to be easily accessible and can be mounted at several different levels, some pouches vertically or horizontally. The pouches can be attached without removing the pouches that already are mounted on the belt. Security The belt has a three-point buckle to prevent accidental opening and a safety strap that closes over the outside buckle. The pouches are fitted between the inner and outer belt making them virtually impossible to pull off. The belt is extremely difficult to ignite. 9

10 System COVERT GEAR This system, like all our other systems, is comfortable, safe and provides easy access to the equipment carried in it. The design has also incorporated the element of concealment as an essential. The system is based on our equipment vest with specially designed and sewn pockets and, compartments. The vest is available in two different versions, tailored specifically for each task - Surveillance and Tactical. We also have pouches for covert carrying that can be attached to a trouser belt. Comfort The vests are well tailored, distributing pressure evenly over the shoulders and around the body. They are very lightweight, durable and the size is easy to adjust. One of the biggest advantages is that you know that you have all your equipment in one place, the vest. When off duty, you can take off the vest with the confidence that all your equipment will remain in place. Availability The pistol can, as usual, be carried in the trouser belt. The vest is cut so as not to block access to it. Two compartments for left or right hand shooters, for the pistol, is sewn on the inside of the vest. The compartments on the vest are designed and positioned to make what you need most frequently, quick and easily accessible. Pouches and belts We have holders and pouches as well as belts especially designed for covert carrying of police equipment. Harnesses Two different harnesses are in our inventory so you can carry radios, a baton, handcuffs and CS spray in a comfortable and safe way. Surveillance vest This vest has compartments for the equipment that is needed during surveillance Tactical vest This is the vest for users who carry heavier weapons with extra magazines, etc. Covert backpack The covert backpack looks like a backpack or a bag, but transforms to a ballistic vest with carrying capacity. 10

11 TACTICAL SYSTEM System The ballistic system is designed with the same ideas as our other systems. Freedom of movement, accessibility and flexibility. On top of that, we have added ballistic protection. The system is fully compatible with our clothes and all our pouches, bags and backpacks. Comfort & mobility The ballistic protection is designed to minimize restrictions in movement and to be as comfortable as possible. The shoulders are padded for maximum comfort. The ballistic protection is divided into many parts: the front panel, back panel, sleeves, groin protection, belt and yoke. These parts will give you good movement and flexibility. The collar is cut low, not to interfere with the helmet or restrict your vision. Protection The protection level of the vest can be adapted to suit your requirements. We put priority on movement before protection as ease of movement is a very good protection. Availability The vest is covered with MOLLE webbings so you can place the pouches where it suits you best. Communication The radio can be attached anywhere you want. There are several options where you can run the cables so they do not get caught. When not in use, the earpiece can be stored in a special compartment, keeping it protected. 11

12 MILITARY SYSTEM Belt The trousers belt is stiffened and will not twist when you carry a leg attachment Attaching gear to the belt Leg attachments are secured with a Velcro loop that makes it possible to attach them without opening your belt. Leg attachment Leg attachments are stable and comfortable on either your right or left leg. A range of specially design pouches are available to choose from and attach to your leg. Weapon attachment The weapon can be carried in a sling, attached to the equipment vest. You relieve the neck and increase your comfort considerably. This makes it easier to concentrate on your task. Accessibility The pouches can be attached in different ways and in different places giving you the ability to grab the content you want. The pouches are designed to make it easy and fast to change magazines. The dump pouch is rolled out for the fast storage of empty magazines or other things. Silent The tactical pouches can be opened silently so you can change magazines without being heard. Communications The radio can be attached wherever you want. There are several options to route wires for microphone, PTT and headphones so they will not get stuck. Survival The small backpack can be attached to the equipment vest. It can be worn pulled up or down when you wear a backpack. It has a built-in mini-sleeping mat and houses equipment to let you survive 1-3 days. Mission backpack A backpack for all soldiers and their hour needs is attached on the outside of the big backpack. Flap and back pocket Parts of the large backpack can be detached and used separately to cover your needs for one day. Large backpack It is always a problem to bring enough equipment for one week in a tactically sound way. We have designed a backpack that will work with the uniform, equipment vest and other equipment. The backpack is big enough for you to easily store all your equipment. Pockets are positioned to be easily accessible when you are resting. All surfaces that rest against your body are padded and ventilated to maintain the highest possible comfort. 12

13 Snigel solutions At SnigelDesign we realize that it is all about systems, products working together, but it is also about details, making each product work on its own. So, we have a number of solutions that we use in our products and here are some of them. Slotted leg pockets Allows you to route the leg strap under the leg pocket so you still can use the pockets when carrying a leg rig. Safe MOLLE A simple way to attach your pouches to your vest. Shit pants The extended zipper lets you do your stuff without pulling down your trousers. Shifted knee pockets Makes sure the kneepad lands were your knee lands when kneeling Swivel attachment Makes it possible to attach the pouches vertically or horizontally. 18 Rigid trouser belt -05 The belt to use when you carry something heavy. It supports the load and remains comfortable. The belt has one channel for 2-3 cable ties. Reinforced with a semi-rigid plastic sheet. It supports the load, does not twist or sag and remains comfortable. Buckle and Velcro closure in the front. One size fits all up to a 125 cm waist. The braces are attached in the side of the trousers. Thread it around the belt or through the bands on the trousers. 19 Police equipment belt -09 An ergonomical belt designed to improve your comfort whilst carrying a heavy load. Padded inner and semi rigid outer belt construction. Ergonomically shaped to fit around the body with minimum pressure. High friction inside to minimize the pressure required to keep the belt up. Padded inner belt for comfort. Channel for cable ties. The outer belt is reinforced with a semi-rigid plastic sheet so it will stay up when loaded with a pistol holster. The belt supports the load, does not twist or sag and remains comfortable. One belt construction that is reinforced with a semi-rigid plastic sheet. It supports the load, does not twist or sag and remains comfortable. BEB 06 or Police belt adjuster -09 The adjuster makes it easy to adjust the size of the equipment belt when you change from heavy winter clothing to lighter clothing. It is fastened to the right side of the belt and then threaded through the belt buckle. This adjuster is very neat when you are changing your clothing during the day. In the morning, it is cold and you wear more clothing. When it gets warmer and you remove some clothing, you need to tighten the belt, and then you use the Belt adjuster. Dimensions: L=22 & W=5 cm. 20 Combat belt -12 A padded belt with two MOLLE webbings sewn on the outside for a comfortable carry of any type of pouch or holster. The MOLLE webbings are sewn on eight cm wide panels with slots between the panels. The inner belt can be placed on the outside of one or more panels so a pistol holster can be worn. An inside 25 mm band is sewn under the panels, use it to attach a leg panel if you need to. It prevents the band from the leg panel from blocking other pouches on the belt itself. Ridges are sewn on the inside of the belt to improve ventilation and comfort. They also make the belt fit snugly on the body. In the top of the belt, loops are sewn so you can attach a harness or similar. A ballistic panel can be inserted into the belt. 72 Backpack transition from approach march to combat This is our system of how to move from approach march to combat in one smooth and fast way. The mission backpack is attached on the back of the 90 or 120L backpack and easy to attach and to remove. 72

73 25L Specialist backpack A solid, reliable and versatile backpack for storage and transport of sensitive/delicate equipment. The backpack can be tailored by the user for radio or medical gear. It has a ventilated back with a plastic sheet and an aluminum stay to make it firm, but adaptable. Shoulder pads are made from plastic foam for comfort and even balance of weight. They have a chest strap and attachment for handset/microphone. The shoulder pads can be stored behind the back plate and you can then use the backpack as a shoulder bag and one side compression strap can then be used as a shoulder strap. A ballistic plate or hydration bladder can be carried in the compartment in the back. The bag is made from hard wearing coated polyamide fabric with heavy duty zippers. Long heavy duty zipper with long pull cords to allow the backpack to fully open up. Press-button in the main compartment stops the zipper from opening too much. Four long side compression straps are sewn to the backpack. The loose ends of the side compression straps roll up and are secured with Velcro. In less than 30 seconds (less than 10 if you have practiced) the backpack is transformed into a tactical ballistic vest with your weapon on your chest. The bag has three main functions: Reconnaissance, assault or personal protection. For the undercover officer the bag will store your radio induction loop and headset. It can also store your handgun and baton where it is easy to reach. There is also space for a ballistic vest and backup weapon to be carried discreetly when only a thin shirt or T-shirt can be worn. For the user the bag offers the possibility to transfer a civilian-looking person to an assault ready operator in around ten seconds.
