1 IHSAA Boys Soccer State Tournament Series State Finals Summary Fort Wayne Canterbury Wins Third Title In Five Years Senior forward Javier Castillo s goal at 51:06 proved to be the winner as Fort Wayne Canterbury defeated Brownsburg 1-0 for its third IHSAA Boys Soccer state title on Saturday, October 27, 2001 at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis. Coached by Greg Mauch, the Cavaliers finished with a nine-game winning streak. Fort Wayne Canterbury s other titles came in 1997 and In 2000, it reached the state semifinals before falling to North Central of Indianapolis. Mauch was the coach for Canterbury s previous championship campaigns as well. Fort Wayne Canterbury outshot Brownsburg 19-8 overall and 8-1 on goal. Assisting on Castillo s 13 th goal of the season was senior Ochuko Metitiri. Brownsburg, which was playing in the state finals for the first time, finished under the guidance of coach Chad Medcalfe. Both teams led all the way and scored 3-1 victories in the semifinals to advance to the championship match. Fort Wayne Canterbury downed first-time state finalist Merrillville (20-5) and Brownsburg ousted Columbus North (15-6-3), which also was making its first trip to this level of the tournament. Matt Lovell, a senior defender for Brownsburg, was named the 2001 recipient of the C. Eugene Cato Mental Attitude Award in Boys Soccer by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee. Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 check in Lovell s name to Brownsburg High School.
