1 OLYMPIA YACHT CLUB May 2015 ello fellow Boaters, H What an April! 20 of our boats made their way to the Daffodil Marine Festival and several other members joined us by car. Wow! Our members enthusiasm created an electricity throughout the entire weekend. Our hard work, led by Beth Connelly, was acknowledged when our boat received the Commodore s Choice trophy and also a second place trophy for best theme boat. The boat was amazing! I want to extend my thanks to all of you who made this happen. I was so proud to be a member of our club. People continually told me how impressed they were with OYC because of the friendliness of our members. And the fun doesn t end here. A group of us will continue to carry the OYC burgee to Seattle Opening Day. It has been some time since we made the journey that far north so my special thanks to those who are able to come with us. We will have 2 boats in the parade a decorated ship and flag ship. Pretty cool! The Mighetto s have agreed to decorate their boat and have a great plan. We will be helping them on Thursday, April 30 in Seattle, if you are around. Balder 2 will be the Flag ship. So, look for pictures. I know our members will be excellent representatives for you and demonstrate to all the clubs how incredibly great we are. Then, following that is our own Opening Day on May 9th. This is the day we bless the very water that brings so much joy into our lives. It actually begins on Friday with our TGIF (which means there won t be one at the end of the month). Saturday, May 9th, begins with a $5 breakfast served from 8 9:30. The American Legion Band will keep us in the spirit as they play between 9:30 10am. Our formal program will start with the Star Spangled Banner sung by our own Nancy Stolark. In addition to the traditional program, we will also be inducting a couple of special members into our club. The boat parade will start at noon. At 2:30, we will have a barbeque on our deck. The Opening Day celebration will continue with music (and even Karaoke) in the early evening. It will be a day of fun and friendship. And we are looking forward to seeing you there. By the time you read this, our own Women s Auxiliary will have put on their annual Women s Inter Club (WIC) luncheon. The theme is Sweet Shop and it is very sweet. More details to follow. I look forward to seeing you on the docks and at the clubhouse. Our very best to you. Commodore Myra Captain Joe S/V Balder II Commodore Commodore Myra Downing Captain Joe Downing S/V Balder II

2 The Beachcomber May 2015 Olympia Yacht Club 2 Vice Commodore Captain Mike Phillips First Mate Patti Phillips M/V Chaotic Too Hello all, I ve heard that spring is here but someone forgot to let Mother Nature know. Oh well, we can still have a lot of fun with the activities and the great friends we have at OYC. We had a great time at the daffodil festival at TYC, and I would like to thank everyone that helped Beth with the event. You did a great job, thank you all. Next on our activity calendar is Seattle opening day, South Sound Opening Day, our monthly meeting and The Memorial Day cruise at the Island. We are looking forward to seeing all of you at the activities. See you then. The Summer Cruise to the Islands: There is not much to report on at this time but I would like to set a meeting up for June 16 th in the club house at 6 pm to discuss the cruise but more important to get everyone together who are coming back with the group because the La Conner marina needs to get moorage money by July 6 th to hold the moorage for us. My thought is to get everyone together and talk about the different marinas and get La Conner taken care of. Sincerely, Mike Phillips Vice Commodore M/V Chaotic Too This seems to be a slow time of year on the BOT. We are still gathering information on the parking lots so nothing new to report at this time. When new information becomes available it will be passed on to the membership. The bids for replacing the docks are due on April 20th so no new information at this time. I am hoping we will have enough information to make a decision at the May BOT meeting. Please plan to attend. Don t forget that May is election month. Attend the dinner meeting and make your vote count! My phone is always on so feel free to call anytime with any questions or concerns you may have. See you on the docks! 3 Rear Commodore Captain Walter Schefter First Mate Catherine Schefter M/V Rob Roy Just returned from Daffodil and M/V Rob Roy ran great. I must admit it takes a little effort and a few greenbacks to push a slightly long in the tooth Tollycraft into its third decade. Didn t get lost this time out which was a positive. On another subject we are fast approaching Cinco de Mayo which you and I will celebrate a day later on May 6. In this theme I will relate to you an experience Catherine and I had some years past while pursuing the pheasant in eastern Washington. While in Moses Lake we frequented our favorite Mexican restaurant. The place was rather seedy if you get my drift. Something along the lines of truck stops with large painted signs that simply say EAT. The tables were Formica topped with initials carved but with most of the profanity overlayed. The rest rooms were another story but, as with many things in life, you take your chances. Well it seems the original owner and family, on invitation of Uncle Sam, emigrated from Mexico in the early 40s when the US wanted farm laborers to take up the slack for our men in service. The family came, stayed and became citizens three generations or so ago. It s the typical American story, the family now boasts of Doctors, Engineers, and the like yet the place is still in the family. The food was outstanding! The salsa, which is the only true measure of any Mexican restaurant, was just hot enough to bring out that slight forehead sweat that complements Tequila so well. On the wall of the establishment was a large photograph of General Pancho Villa and a few dozen of his men, all posed around a fountain in a town square. Therein lies the story. The 1916 photo was taken in Columbus, New Mexico which was the objective of Mr. Villa s invasion of the United States. In fact it is the only time the United States has been invaded. While the invasion was somewhat of a fiasco, Pancho s pulling the tail of the Great Gringo caused hundreds of his countrymen to flock to his army. If you recall we had to send Black Jack Pershing down to chase him away. The present owner of the eatery said one of their ancestors fell in with Pancho and his boys and so ended up in Columbus without invitation only to be unceremoniously kicked out by Black Jack and our boys. Twenty five years later, in 1942, our own Mr. Roosevelt cordially invited him back to Moses Lake. As said, the family has long since been citizens and are quite proud of their family history on both sides of the border. They related that in the recent past they had run across a bona fide trained chef who volunteered to create a sushi bar for their Friday night happy hour. Not a short order cook mind you but a real trained chef. Now that s a story. A sushi bar in a slightly run down Mexican restaurant in western farm and ranch country! It is said the sushi was first class but the setting and clientele led to an immediate dispute with management. Seems the customers, all farmers and ranchers, called out either ketchup or salsa to go along with the sushi. The chef, greatly insulted, stormed out and the great sushi experiment ended. I suspect no one in Moses Lake noticed. We won t be able top that story but we are going Mexican for our May 6 dinner meeting. The Formica topped tables were scotched by my bosses and the salsa is to be but a poor imitation of what should have been. None the less we will not disappoint. We are setting a catered buffet on the deck under tents but we will start, at your table, with Fiesta Salad with Lime Cilantro Vinaigrette. There will be chips and salsa at your table and on the deck you can fill corn or flour tortillas with seasoned taco meat or fajita chicken, sautéed peppers and onions and cover the whole thing with lettuce, tomatoes and cheese if you wish. All of the above can be smothered with salsa, sour cream and guacamole. On the side you can choose Spanish rice and/or refried beans sans cheese. For dessert we will have Mexican Chocolate Cake. Finally, please put your opening day on your calendar. It is but a mere two days after the dinner. It starts with a special TGIF on Friday the 8 th and on Saturday morning we serve you breakfast, hold the opening ceremony shortly thereafter and then about noon start our decorated boat parade. In mid-afternoon, after the parade, we will have a BBQ on the deck. It s a great event and the pride of our club with live music both on Friday evening and with the American Legion Band on Saturday morning. Please try to come and participate in all or just part. Also consider parading your boat. It takes but little effort and minimal decoration and you get to use your boat. So invite friends and/or relatives to come along. I would like to see you there and know you will enjoy it. But enough for now. See you around Rear Commodore Walt Schefter First Mate, Catherine Schefter M/V Rob Roy 3

6 The Beachcomber May 2015 Olympia Yacht Club 6 Fleet Surgeon Richard Hurst, M.D ( Rich ) First Aid Kits Part 2 So now you have a basic kit. I prefer the soft sided ones that can be crammed into some weird boat shaped cavity, but I own a hard cased one that is bright yellow and began life as a fishing tackle box with a fold out tray. Take stock of what is in your basic kit. Does it have enough Band Aids? Consider a supply of flexible ones that will wrap around a knuckle or somewhere else that moves. Big ones to cover big owies. Consider feminine pads. They are large, clean and cheap. Did you get a supply of antiseptic soap such as Hibiclens or Betadine? Bottled water is clean enough to wash out most wounds. I wouldn t use tank water. I really love Tegederm or Bioclusive adherent transparent dressings. 5 for $6.79 at Drugstore.com (almost all prices in this article will be from there) Get larger sizes because you can always cut them down. I barked my shin several years ago on our first landing of a cruise. I put on a Bioclusive and left it alone. OK to shower. No drainage on clothes or bed. Peeled it off at the end of trip and completely healed. Ace bandage large and small to hold on dressings or splint sprained joints. SAM splints ($14.99). These are flexible splints that can be formed into various shapes. Almost any stick or paddles or kitchen instrument can be made into a splint for larger emergencies. Blow up splints are available for arms and legs. Steri-strips sterile tape that can be used to bring skin edges together for cuts ($9.99). Tincture of benzoin (Amazon -3 for $7.56) can be painted on intact skin to make it very sticky to hold the tape in place. When I was a student working at campus health center, we had to call the attending doctor in to supervise any suturing so we would use steri-strips in all but the worst cases. Works great. Really dirty wounds can be left open. They will heal, just takes longer. Cold pack frozen peas don t leave home without them (price per Safeway) Triple antibiotic cream/neosporin most basic kits have this or you can add more ($5.99) Good for scrapes or burns. Next, the real budget buster. Do you need an AED (Automated Electronic Defibrillator)? (online $995 and up). Anyone on board with significant heart disease or the possibility of same? If you are in a marina, there is 911 just like home. If you are on the water, even in the shadow of Seattle or Tacoma, the chances are that, even with good CPR, you won t be able to contact the police or Coast Guard and have them find you before you tire. Desolation Sound, the Broughtons, forget it. Just one boat unit! Think about it. Be sure everyone knows where you keep the first aid kit. Consider keeping a few BandAids nearby so people don t raid your kit for every little cut. We will discuss medications in the next column. Sunshine Committee Barbara Narozonick-Neuhauser, Chair Moorage Report Bridget Shreve, Moorage Master Get well flowers were sent to Nancy Re. Thanks to those members cleaning their boats and replacing burgees. I will continue to send out reminder postcards. Thanks again for all your cooperation!

Phyllis and Judy Club Service Program PC Les Thompson, Chair Greetings everyone. I hope you are enjoying this beautiful early Spring. The flowers and trees are great this year even if too early. I have posted the quarterly report for CSP in the clubhouse for you to check. These are hours for January thru March. Congrats to many of you who have already done your 24 hours (for 2015). There seems to still be some confusion on the billing for CSP. Those of you getting billed so far this year are for your uncompleted hours from last year, The hours that you have done this year do not reflect on your current billing statements. These hours will be credited next year in Please refer to your yearbook as well, as it is explained there also. CSP is always billed after the end of the year for that year. Thus 2015 will be billed in 2016 etc. There will be many opportunities for you to get hours this Spring with Opening Day, Spring cleanup and flower planting, dock projects, IH cleanup etc. Contact any committee chair for help, the caretaker, Board member or Bridge member to get on board. I am also available if you have questions or need help. See you at an event or on the docks... PC Leslie Thompson CSP guru M/V EcstaSea WHEN: WHERE? WHO? 8 The Beachcomber May 2015 Olympia Yacht Club 8 Island Home Gary Gronley, Chair Environmental Awareness Rick Bergholz, Chair Your Island Home committee and other club members will assemble on the island April 25th for our annual "Spring Clean". We are scheduled to receive 10 tons of gravel from the WDF for our driveway. This will be placed Friday the 24th. We have ordered 20 yds. of beauty bark to be spread on the island trails. We will be pruning the brush along the trails and grubbing out the area between our entry/exit driveways. For the second year we are going to do a bottom depth survey to establish a baseline for the Long Range planning committee to help predict when we may need do our next dredge. The galley is going to get a super clean, and the wood molding on the cabinets is going to get a fresh coat of oil to help preserve them. Bobby Brown has removed the oysters from their grow bags and spread them in the bay south of the island. We are scheduled to receive another 2000 oyster seed from the Squaxin Tribe in May or June for our next grow season. Jim Cullins has already refurbished all of our outdoor picnic tables and they look great. Thank you, Jim. The next Island Home committee meeting is scheduled for Monday May 4th at 7:00 pm Oil Absorbent Materials for your Bilge From time to time we see a slight oil slick on the water within our marina. The caretaker must put in time and effort to identify the source of the slick. If it is slick enough, then a call to the Department of Ecology is in order. Some of these slicks originate within our marina and not from a certain marina on the west side of the inlet. None of this is good. What can we as a yacht club do to reduce these events? Your Environmental Committee is charged with managing the clean marina aspect of our marina. We are asked to set goals each year. One of our goals is to get a bilge pad under each and every engine in the marina as well as a Bilge sock. My wife pointed out that these things are full of teddy bear stuffing. Polyfill is very oil absorbent but does not absorb water. If you have a bilge pads under your engine the small drips of oil will stay in the pad. If you have a bilge sock in your bilge small amounts of oil in your bilge will stay in the sock. Where can you get these bilge pads and socks. We will be giving them away during the Environmental/Safety day each year, a good time to replace yours. We will leave some for a while in the clubhouse. You can ask a member of the Environmental Committee if they have any left. If none of that works, then Inlet Marine and West Marine carry these and they are reasonably priced. See you on the Island. 47` N 122` W Gary Gronley M/V Our Adventure Clubhouse PC Carol Robinson, Chair May Greetings! You can't find a place more beautiful than the Pacific NW when it's sun-shining! You might notice that the new ductless air/heat units are in and working great! We will proceed with more improvements throughout the next couple months. PC Carol Robinson M/V C-Kiss

10 The Beachcomber May 2015 Olympia Yacht Club 10 The History Corner Lisa Mighetto, OYC Historian In October 2001, Past Commodore Larry Price asked all OYC PCs to identify significant events and greatest achievements during their watch. The responses, stored in our archives, ranged from a few concise sentences to several pages of singlespaced typing. Some responses were wistful; some were frustrated; some were amusing; some were eloquent and literary. It was the best of times. It was the worst of times, recalled PC Bob Job of his year. A few examples are provided below. Dick Lewis, Commodore in 1964, wrote about meetings that were held in the basement of the Governor House [Governor Hotel?]. The club routinely met there and at the caretaker s house, which then was in poor condition. He provided drawings (see illustrations below) of a proposed new meeting facility. Chuck Anderson, Commodore in 1971, described the purchase of Island Home with assistance from PC Bill Hartman and Vice Commodore Orvin Parrott as a very significant event. Kenneth Smith, Commodore in 1973, was proud of overseeing the start of the Soap and Suds event with the Shelton Yacht club. In 1974, as OYC immediate Past Commodore, he was elected Commodore of the International Power Boaters Association IPBA, which organizes predictive log racing. Joe Anderson, Commodore in 1979, remembered the club expansion which provided permits for a boat shed and for the current 600 float, while David Graf, Commodore in 1983, mentioned the installed ramps and the preference of OYC members for work parties rather than fee-based improvements and maintenance. Bob Job, Commodore in 1985, recounted the negotiations with a Local Improvement District that resulted in the public boardwalk over the club property. The photo below, provided by PC Tom Skillings, reveals what the OYC looked like before the boardwalk. Richard Erwin, Commodore in 1998, noted that, in return for assistance with a visit from the USS Olympia, a room was named Olympia Yacht Club room at the Rama [Ramada?] Hotel. He also described a continuation of community relations that resulted in South Sound Opening Day becoming the official first Lake Fair event of the year. 47 boats participated that year. These reminiscences provide an excellent record and they reveal all the work and inspiration that went into building our club. The effort to collect information from Past Commodores was later continued by Roy and Laura Childers and the historical committee is now in the process of contacting recent Past Commodores for information that we can preserve in the archives. Stay tuned for updates in this column.

The Sweete Shoppe luncheon gathered about 80 ladies and featured a burger & fries menu like back in the day. Vonnie Contris was one of many who enjoyed the old fashioned modern juke box that played 50 s rock throughout the event.
