It takes W people who care, people who give of themselves and people who are willing to serve for the good of the club and each other. For Debra and I, OYC has been a great experience. We did not expect it or plan for it. Admittedly, we joined primarily for monetary reasons. Yes, it did cost less than our previous moorage. Yes, it had the greatest outstation anywhere (Island Home) and then there was the reciprocal moorage. Yes, there is a full service grocery at the top of our ramp. We thought that was enough. Then about seven years ago we decided to go to the Memorial Day cruise, our first OYC event. We were asked to help with the games. A few months later we received a call and were asked to run for Fleet Captain Power. We did not say no. At that time there was no thought of ever being Commodore. Fast forward to today and both of us would tell anyone that we have had a wonderful ride. We now have so many friends at OYC and have the bonus of many more from the Grand 14 clubs. So how is your life? Are you having fun? Have you ever thought..what if.what if we got more involved? For me doing the same thing over and over is not an option, my attention span is too short. Life is too short to coast, to just be one of the many. We chose to try to make the club we love a better place and to try to make everyone feel welcome at any OYC event. So if you are thinking.maybe we could..maybe it would be fun..but..don t worry about the buts, you are not alone. There is so much help for the journey. We currently need a Fleet Captain Power and a Rear Commodore. Both are volunteer positions that are easier than you might think. You will have more fun than you can imagine. You will be changed forever and your boating and cruising will never be the same. Is it your time? Give me a call and let s talk about it. Yes, Valentine s Day is coming very soon and Gary and Deb Waldherr and their crew have a wonderful evening planned for us. My other love is sailboat racing and February is the month for the biggest south sound race Toliva Shoal. Let s hope for big winds so my husband can make it to an evening JO event scheduled for the night of that race. To ensure my attendance, I will be bypassing this race but following it with technology. PS we re still looking for chase boats. The 2014 year started with these warm feelings at the annual January OYC and SSSS joint cruise to Island Home. It was a wonderful event with 35 boats participating. We had a great time and lots of laughs. My favorite moment though was when our Commodore, Mr. Jeff Pape, made a comment that he hoped people didn t feel pressured about joining our club and then said, but the doors are locked from the outside and I would be at one door and he would be at the other. It was very funny! Also in January was the Grand 14 cruise in which was held at Queen City Yacht Club s outstation. It was the opportunity for Mike, Joe, Patti, and I to roast our Commodore. We didn t actually roast him because he is too lovable so we did more of a tribute. Don t get me wrong - there are a few comical moments which you will see at the June dinner meeting. Here s to a month of many opportunities to share the love and reach out to each other in good will. I would like to thank Susie and Myra for a good joint cruise with SSSS. And what I hope will be successful in getting new members. Jeff made a great pitch for OYC and what a great membership we have. He explained the current membership drive and the fees and benefits connected with it. Now all we can do is wait and see what happens at the boat show. This month we have two functions. They are: The regular dinner meeting is on February 5th at 6:00. It is a steak night and we will be honoring our Past Commodores for their service. The second function is the Valentine s Day cruise at Island Home on February 14th and 15th. The cost is $35.00 per person. Both functions will require a reservation. On a second note, if you are on the permanent list for the monthly dinner meetings and cannot attend for whatever reason, PLEASE call and cancel your reservation. This will save you from being charged for a meal that you were unable to enjoy. If you would like to be taken off the permanent list, please send me an or call me so I can take you off the list. In either case this will save you from having any extra charges. We had about 30 boats, 60 people, great music, food and weather. It was an absolutely delightful weekend! Thanks to Myra for all the shopping and help in the kitchen! It is always so great to get these two wonderful clubs together. It is a potluck dinner that can't be beat! Looking forward to the boat show coming up. Hoping to get some ideas as we transition to living aboard! The downsizing is keeping Rick and me pretty busy. Amazing what one can accumulate in this life! TGIF is the 31st this month-hope to see you there. It is hard to believe that South Sound Opening Day is only a few months away. As always, we can use some help. The next TGIF party is scheduled for January 31st at 5:00 at the Mainstation $5/person No reservations necessary Happy New Year. We have the upcoming Valentine Cruise, on February 14th and 15th. Pellegrino's will be catering this event with Steak and Lobster. See flyer in this beachcomber. The theme is 1956, anything goes. use your imagination. Decorate your own table space to match this theme. Bring your own decorations, plates, silverware and glassware for this event. We will be playing a game after dinner that is sure to make you laugh. Poker Cruise is March 15th, $25.00 buy-in, no cruise costs. So if you don't want to play poker it's free. We will have chili and beer available. We are actively trying to get a group together for Seattle Opening Day, the first weekend in May. If you are interested, please contact me. We need to make arrangements if we want to travel as a group. A new Fleet Captain Power is being sought for unlimited CSP hours for the next two years, an expense account, and your photo on the wall. Our committee has had so much fun in the last year, that we are willing, if you want, to remain in place and assist you with the next calendar year events. 5 Board of Trustees George Smith, Chair M/V Aventura We are nearing the end of the dredge project so here are few items for you, the member, to take care of before you return to the basin. Please check your slip before returning to make sure it is as you left it. If you have a boathouse in the dredge path, please check the back of both your boat and your boathouse for any damage. I was on site everyday but was not able to watch 100% of the time. As of this writing we do not have any answers on whether or not we will be required to place a sand cap in the 100 dock area. The tentative completion date for the dredge is February 6th if all goes well. As most of you probably have heard, we are running a Boat Show special on membership. The initiation fee will be $ and if the new member moves their boat into the basin, it drops to $ The Membership Committee has set a goal of 40 new members so if you have friends or family who have been interested in joining. NOW is the time! Let s all pitch in and sell OYC to perspective new members. The Safety Chairman, PC Richard Erwin, took a nasty fall at home and fractured his femur. He will be out of commission for several weeks so if you have a safety concern, please call me or the Chair of Island Home, Gary Gronley, or the Chair of Mainstation, Ron Vukonich. I will be out of town for a few days as we are headed to Orlando to watch our Granddaughter compete in the National Dance and Drill competition. Chair PC George Smith 4gwsmith@comcast.net Late breaking news January 24th.the sand cap will be required Government Affairs Gary Ball, Chair First, I would like to welcome Bruce Snyder to the Government Affairs Committee. He will be a fine addition to our committee, having served on our Board of Trustees for several years. Karol Kersh, with input from other committee members, prepared a written statement to the City suggesting some improvements to the most recent Comprehensive Plan. The document was approved by the board of trustees and sent to all city council members and the planning staff. We will follow up as needed. Planning for the 2014 Legislative Waterfront Reception, which will be held on Wednesday, February 19, is proceeding nicely. Invitations are going out now. This year, we will be jointly sponsoring the reception with Recreational Boating Association of Washington and Northwest Marine Trade Association. Our major reason for the joint sponsorship is to make it a larger event, which hopefully will attract more legislators and local elected officials. 6 The Beachcomber February 2014 Olympia Yacht Club 6 Vonnie and I recently enjoyed attending our first Past Commodore Cruise-in at Queen City Yacht Club s out station on Bainbridge Island. We d attended the Winter Cruise-in as Bridge Officers the last three years, of course, but this was the first one that we could enjoy from a more relaxed position, plus we could catch up with many of our Porpoise classmates. As for the nomination process, we are still looking for a Rear Commodore, Fleet Captain Power and Secretary. These positions are very important to the smooth working of our club and can provide great satisfaction to you as you perform them. This year we are using a crab theme. Make sure that date gets on your calendar because we would like to have a really good attendance by our own yacht club spouses. And if anyone is interested in attending one of our meetings please contact me and I will let you know when the next meeting is being held. We have made the following contributions this month: American Hero Quilts $ and South Sound Estuary Association $200. The South Sound Estuary Association teaches the general public about marine life in the Puget Sound. Their goal is to develop an aquarium and marine science center on the waterfront in downtown Olympia. We have also purchased a book entitled Shell Games: Rogues, Smugglers, and the Hunt for Nature s Bounty. It s all about the black-market wildlife trade in the Pacific Northwest, and more specifically, the black-market trade of geoducks. It s an easy, interesting read and you should be able to finish the book if you stay more than two days on the island. Along with the book we purchased a DVD entitled Return of the Plankton. The DVD is 27 minutes and is about the seasonal changes underwater in Puget Sound. We hope you will enjoy these additions to the island library. 7 Island Home Gary Gronley, Chair Club Service Program Les Thompson, Chair As I am writing this month s column the dredge contractor is nearing the completion of the 100 dock area at the Main Station. There are still two weeks on his contract to complete this phase of the project. If a sand cap is required and the contract is extended beyond January 31 we will allow some flexibility to those boats that have been relocated to the Island. If your boat is already at the Island and the contract is extended and you are going to attend the Sweetheart cruise, your moorage time will be extended thru the cruise date of Feb 16th. Our Clubrunner mail service will be sending out a club notice when the project is completed. Nine days after the project is completed all boats moored at the Island will need to be removed or have an OYC member on board overnight. The hospital ERs are overflowing and people are really getting sick and a few are dying. It is still not too late to get immunized. It doesn t prevent all illness, but drastically reduces the chance of being hospitalized or worse. CPR course. Tentatively planning for Tuesday, the 18th of March with our own Ron Wertz teaching. 7 PM at the clubhouse. 9 The History Corner Lisa Mighetto, OYC Historian The OYC has always encouraged young boaters and the junior sailing program, which dates from the 1930s, provides an excellent example. The report below from 1938 indicates that in addition to racing, young sailors at OYC attended a skiing trip to Mt. Rainier, where they had a lot of fun trying to jibe and tack on the slippery staves. It sounds like junior members also served as flag officers in the club. Next month s column will feature a history of the youth sailing program. 9

10 The Beachcomber February 2014 Olympia Yacht Club 10 MARINE FUEL STATION UPDATE The Port of Olympia has provided OYC with the following information: In November 2013, The Port Commissioners approved going forward with design and permitting of the fuel dock. The next commission decision will be whether or not to proceed with construction bidding. Below are the anticipated timetables for the fuel dock project. MARINE FUELING FACILITY PROCESS Jan Preliminary Design & Environmental Documentation Feb Preliminary Design Complete (30%) Mar Environmental Documentation Submittal to Regulatory Agencies NOTE: The Environmental Review by Regulatory Agencies may take approximately 8 to 12 months. Below are two timetables, depending upon the length of the Environmental Review. In either timetable, the beginning of construction will likely not occur until the summer of 2015 due to the seasonal schedule limitations of inwater construction work. 8-MONTH ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW Nov Draft Final Design Documents (90%) Nov Environmental Approvals Received Dec Final Design Documents Complete (100%) JAN REQUEST COMMISSION AP- PROVAL FOR CONSTRUCTION BIDDING Summer and Fall 2015 Construction OR 12 MONTH ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW Mar Draft Final Design Documents (90%) Mar Environmental Approvals Received Apr Final Design Documents Complete (100%) APR REQUEST COMMISSION AP- PROVAL FOR CONSTRUCTION BIDDING Summer and Fall 2015 Construction Jim Sheerer OYC Marine Fuel Station Committee MOORAGE UPDATE FOR SWANTOWN As of today, January 13, 2014, the Dredge at OYC has been moving along and the Contractor has estimated a complete date for the Dredge on or around January 31, Soil samples were taken today by Skillings Connolly to be sent in and tested. This process will take approximately days to complete. If the tests don t meet the required levels OYC will be required to put a 6 Sand Base in the 100 float area. This process could take 7-10 days according to the Contractor. If the 100 float does not require sanding, we would then be able to start possibly moving boats back to OYC the weekend of February 1st & 2nd. If sanding is required the contractor will not place the Sand Base until all the Dredge work is complete on the 100 & 200 floats. This would mean boats would not be able to return to the 100 float until the middle of February. We believe there would be a possibility to start moving boats back to the 200 float if all Dredge work is complete. At this point in time it is hard to give a date for the return of the Guest Dock since that will be the last work to be completed per the contractors schedule. We will be calling people as soon as we get the OK to start bringing boats back. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THIS IS A TENTATIVE SCHEDULE WHICH IS SUB- JECT TO CHANGE. We are trying to give the members as much notice as possible based on information from our Contractor. We would like to thank all the members involved for their patience and understanding through this process. We hope to make the transition back to your slips as easy as possible and notification as soon as we get it. Please try to plan for your crews to get the boats back to OYC as soon as possible as we will be charged for additional time at Swantown. If you will need help getting your boat back to OYC, please give us a call. Again, thanks for your patience during the Dredge. 11 Membership Committee Bill Wilmovsky, Chair... more New Years Eve The expertise of our club seems to grow with every new member. Gary and Brenda Nichols are among our newest but they ve spent all their lives boating. Without giving away ages counting up those years would take all your fingers and toes plus a few more. Gary includes four years in the Navy and a stint in the Bering Sea as a commercial fisherman skippering a 164 foot salmon boat. You get a job like that because he and Brenda spent a number of vacations on their own commercial crab and salmon boat fishing out of Westport. For day jobs he worked 28 years at Kaiser aluminum and she went from a supervisor at Washington Natural Gas to the Attorney Generals office in Tacoma. Retired now and living in Hammersley Inlet not too far from Island Home, they have downsized to a 37 foot Tollycraft sedan named Sealyon. One suspects they can run her in their sleep. If you hear ghosts in Kathy Moore s old boat house, it may just be our newest members from Vancouver, George and Eileen Soli. They are moving their 34 foot Tollycraft tricabin, Lone Star, to OYC but they still live just across the river from the Portland Yacht Club. She is a country girl who was once 1969 Alternate Cowlitz County Dairy Princess, but he grew up in Everett. His Dad owned the American Tug Company so George spent a lot of time on the water and worked his way through high school and college on a tug boat. He is trying to sell a 31 foot Uniflite he s had in Anacortes for a decade. He also has an aluminum Starcraft with a big Mercury on the stern. Meanwhile Eileen s dad got her into boats with a wooden jet boat on the Lewis River. How they got together is a short novel, but it happened when George left his job as a physicist at Cal Tech for the commercial world in Beaverton, Oregon. If his personality glows, it may be because he worked in radiation testing and interstellar telescopes. Eileen is still busy as a professional grandmother with a degree in commercial art, but her last grandchild is off to school soon so she may have more time to play...or take care of her acre of property in Vancouver. 11
