2 TREASURER S REPORT Our group s current paid membership is 22. We have a bank balance of and cash in hand of Although work continues on the rewiring of the layout, the planed elevated section has had to be deferred until next year. This is due to the time being spent in preparation of the new club premises and also the need to consolidate the presentation of the existing layout in readiness for next year s Narrow Gauge North Exhibition. Yes we have been asked to exhibit at this prestigious event. To be held in March We will keep you posted regards the exact date. We will need as many helpers and operators as possible that weekend both to assemble and dismantle the layout. The Keighley Model Railway Club open weekend in October will be the last event in the old clubroom. Please make every effort to attend and ask to be shown the new clubroom. We vacate the old rooms by 30 November and the Christmas open day will be in the new room. For comparison, the old rooms are approx. 8,500 sq. feet. The new room is approx. 9,000 sq. feet. The rent for the new room is significantly higher than previously. The KMRC AGM is in October and it will be formally proposed to increase their annual subs. Their subs are payable by 31 December 2006, at the discounted rate. I ask that all existing KMRC members to renew their membership in December and urge any non-members to consider joining. Our own AGM will be held on Sunday 21 January Finally, you should find a list of our group members names and telephone numbers. 4 ARTICLE 1 A Bridge to Reach. The old piece of wood was looking a bit tired so a new bridge was needed. Standard bridges were to small and joining together they were not strong enough. To have one made was very expensive and a long waiting list. So I decided to build one myself. Now if you are a scale model builder or an engineer Do Not Read any more. Out came the graph paper, using the biggest scale I had to join two sheets together, using one squire per inch (yes I use feet and inches). I was able to work out the lengths of angle iron that were needed and the number of nuts and bolts. Now where to find a supplier, as it turns out there is a good steel stockist in Keighley, J W Laycock on North St. They are most helpful and let me have a look round the place. When I found what I was looking for, they thankfully cut it to all the different lengths for me.

5 Now to start building, I had thought of using my Black & Becker but was told the speed was to fast and I would not be able to hold it steady, I would need a Pillar Drill Press, after a little looking found one (thanks to Mike) in Netto 25. With my plan pinned to the wall, drill all set up; off I go drilling holes at great speed, holes fairly central and lots of metal shavings all over the place. And one blunt drill bit. Change of speed setting and some lubrication, all is well. Now time to bolt it together, one or two holes had to be re-drilled, the use of the angle grinder on the diagonals and I had my bridges made.

6 A good clean down, a number of coats of paint and there you are a bridge to Reach across. They may not be to scale, they may not be perfectly engineered. SO, I like them. The trains don t look bad on them. And it s my railway. Now if you need a bridge to span that gap. Don t ask me build one, do it your self its great fun and very satisfying. 7 ARTICLE 2 The American Dream? I just could not resist it, sat on the shelf in the shop, no not this trip, if it is still there next time I visit then yes; well I just could not forget it, I just hoped it was still there and yes it was! Conrail railway locomotive supplied by USA trains; DeiselCP30 blue with white stripe, full length hand rails lighting and smoke unit with option for sound to be fitted at a later date. It looks quite an impressive loco, with weight, which should give good haulage capacity going on the prototype. Haulage capacity of loco still to test, currently stock collection is being increased for freight yard. More research for traffic handling methods required, stock operational control still to be collected. Tanker traffic, steel boxcars, reefers, bolster wagons. Special loads, well wagon cable carrying, flat backs, steel hoppers and stone carrying hoppers. Track layout of turnouts (which are termed switches on American railroads) is still to be planned relative to area available and prototypical operational procedures. More information is required in order that this can be correctly depicted. The loft is going to be the home for the layout and this is currently being converted; what a lot of dust!!! The track plan will probably be as indicated below final measurements have yet to be made and I may change my mind anyway!

9 ARTICLE 3 NO.WIP. My back yard was a desolate place so I grew a mountain! Not a lot of room, but I needed something for my American loco feel at home with. The railways name NO.WIP (Nowhere In Particular); that way I can run any stock at anytime I please. Not that I need an excuse! Well, OK may-by I do. Well, since the mountain was created a lot has changed. Basically the mountain has gone, must have been an eruption. But it could have been something else like a blocked drain that had to be dug up! Anyway it s gone! So now as no railway is ever really finished neither is mine. I mentioned in my last article frustrating at times well yes, the bit of land for the extension has turned out to be a none starter so Mr Beeching must still have his influences! Those of you who have met me may probably notice I don t talk very much sometimes; other times I can t stop! Please don t feel offended if I ignore you it s not deliberate. I am plagued with depression and from time to time and it plays havoc with conversation and being in busy areas. It also means I can t commit myself to as much as I used to. So, if I do a disappearing act it s not you! (Well, not usually!). Oops! Yes I do have a sense of humour. This hobby along with other interest brings together lots of people with varying skills, techniques and experiences; each turn out different takes on life be it fact or fictional and how that is portrayed never fails to surprise. Being able to disappear into your own world is a great thing and if other people catch on, they too may find it s healing power. In the hectic techno booming world we live in its nice to have some degree of control if we want or need it. May your power to the track be constant and steam a plenty, Let the grass grow where you want it. May your visitor s human or otherwise, ponder your toil with resolve. If you can do a little, but that little may be a lot, Remember what once was nothing is now your railway plot. There once was a man, who went for a walk, And found his way to Heathen, Where trolls and hooligans reigned throughout, It was of course our brethren. That man that went a wandering, Was known to some quite well, To others he was like nothing, But most wished him well.

11 ARTICLE 1 A Growing Love Affair with G The D&RGW, did not set out to build a line to Deadwood Halt from Coyote Heights with a happy heart; however the power of a silver strike and logging / cattle interests pushed them into sending surveyors to check out the possibilities. Coyote Heights at 7,000ft was a high plateau with a steep climb up Rapid Falls, to reach the Pine Ridge rangers station. But for some logging income no other reason could be seen to develop this area. However, Mike found the silver nugget. The Murphy cattle ranch also put pressure on, as a rail head would speed their cattle to Denver and the Eastern markets in better condition for a higher price. So the D&RGW Surveyors set out, if income could grow, as it had on the line to Silverton profit would be high. Leaving Coyote Heights a five span bridge was needed to cross the Colorado melt waters, followed by a long incline to Stoney Pass, however silver ahead the surveyors said it could be done. After two false starts the flat plains of Deadwood had been reached, a new surveying team had to be found to check clearance and grades, as the original surveyors had moved on to set up their own sliver mine. However the D&RGW had services up and running to the Rangers Halt as soon as the track was in place. Miners paid good money to speed their passages to the sliver lode.

12 Initial train services were pulled by the Brick, and experimental diesel from Bachman works, although power was fine, the Brick had clearance problems and was retired. So the Charles Oldroyd loco works tried a Climax and Consolation but each found clearances tight. A railway open saw other loco try their hand. Present services are in the hands of a Prairie type, by Round house; Cattle and logging traffic has grown, plus dynamic and supplies to the sliver mine, and human traffic of course. However the anticipated loads of sliver have not yet appeared, but revenue just covers running costs. Plans are now in hand to push onto Murphy s Halt and around the Heights to Lower Deadwood, where a branch line into the wilderness of the Indian Reserves offers much timber and who knows, more silver.

13 If Lower Deadwood is reached, a loco interchange link back to Coyote could be developed, however this would mean an expensive and large bridge section across Buffalo Valley and Colorado melt waters; surveyors have been seen, watch this space. D&RGW = Denver & Rio Grand Western Mike
