3 CONNECTIONS SEP 2018 VOL. 6 NO. 9 BRINGING STORIES TO LIFE This past April, a tidal wave of stories crashed onto the desk of Susan Adams, NHPBS Manager of Educational Services. Stories about whales eating pizzas, a missing tooth fairy and a land of quadrilaterals stacked up among over 400 entries this year from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut and Wisconsin. This isn t something new to Adams. Piles of stories bursting with creativity from children in kindergarten through 5th grade have been pouring into the NHPBS Writers Contest for over 20 years. But this is something new to intern, Melissa Pratt, (a.k.a. Mel), a junior from Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. Mel s top priority was to upload every single story online so that everyone could read tales about a magical dog, a trampoline adventure, catching butterflies or a lonely wandering Brazilian spider. Mel soon became an expert in Photoshop. After each story was painstakingly scanned by Adams, Mel meticulously cleaned up images page by page, removing smudges and digitally smoothing out creases and crinkles. For the winning stories, Mel s task was to take them one step further and bring them to life through video. Throughout this process, she had some crucial decisions to make. I had to figure out exactly what I wanted to animate. Say if it s a character waving an arm, then I have to go into Photoshop and erase the arm so that I have a clean background so I can move it around. On the next layer in Photoshop Mel had to go back in, isolate the arm and sometimes elongate it just so I have wiggle room so it can wave, explains Mel. Once all the digital pieces were ready for animation, a production day was scheduled for all the contest winners. Mel ushered each child through the catacombs of the scene dock into studio B, where bright lights, a green screen and a camera were ready to record their story. Gently coaching the kids to speak up and use their outside voices, Mel gained a lot of experience in producing that day and throughout the entire NHPBS Writers Contest project. I ve learned to be careful about managing my time and biting off more than I can chew. Right now there is so much I want to do, and then working with the kids there is even more I want to do, but I only have a summer, says Mel. This project is perfect for interns. They learn everything about producing stories from soup to nuts, says Adams. Mel s currently in the home stretch of editing the finalists stories. She is still making decisions on how she should animate a whale jumping or a hand waving, but she can see the finish line. I feel like NHPBS is giving me room to figure out what I m good at and learn and improve, says Mel. I want to go into creating children s content, so I could not have asked for a better internship or a better experience. The 2019 NHPBS Writers Contest kicks off September 1st this year. In the first episode, Louisa tries to persuade Leslie to get rid of two of his three girlfriends, Margot to find a hobby and Gerry to get rid of some of his pets. POLDARK SEASON 4 ON MASTERPIECE It s 1796, and to defend Cornwall and those he loves from an empowered George, Ross must play the political game on a journey that takes him to the nation s capital and into new perils. WINDOWS TO THE WILD NEW SEASON Lake Effect THU September 13 8:30 PM Season 14 kicks off with a hike up Mount Major. Twenty-five chefs from around New Hampshire hike with host Willem Lange to the summit. The chefs cook omelets to feed hikers and raise awareness about hunger in NH. NH Food Bank s chef instructor, Jayson McCarter, joins Willem on the hike to talk about the path his career has taken and the efforts of the Food Bank to help reduce food insecurity.
