1. Introduction This document reports the main findings from the rthumberland Coast AONB Visitor Survey which was conducted from March-August The aim of the survey was to increase understanding of visitor activity within the AONB and provide an informed base from which to manage tourism in a more sustainable way. Individual objectives within the survey were to establish: 1. Trip pattern 2. Transport use 3. Awareness of the rthumberland Coast AONB 4. Activities 5. Satisfaction 6. Support for sustainable tourism 7. Visitor profile The results have been used to help inform the rthumberland Coast AONB Partnership s Sustainable Tourism Strategy. 1

2. Methodology 2.1 Questionnaire design The last visitor survey carried out by the AONB was in This survey ran for 12 months and was also used to inform the AONB s previous Sustainable Tourism Strategy. To allow results to be compared back to this earlier survey, the 2013 questionnaire is largely based on the 2005 design. A copy of the questionnaire used can be found in Appendix Method Face to face interviewing was the main method used to determine the activities and opinions of visitors. Different interview sites were used in order to try and make the sample as representative as possible. Due to limited AONB staff time, QA Research were contracted to carry out most of the face to face interview work. This allowed for a much greater sample size to be achieved and increased the robustness of the results. The same interview location points as the 2005 survey were used to ensure a good geographical spread of responses was obtained (Figure 1). There were five main surveys areas, with several sub-locations within each: Area A - Berwick-upon-Tweed, Spittal, Cocklawburn, Budle Bay Area B - Holy Island Area C - Bamburgh, Seahouses and Beadnell Area D - Low Newton-by-the-Sea, Embleton, Dunstan, Craster, Howick and Boulmer Area E - Alnmouth, Warkworth and Amble As well as face to face interviews, self-completion questionnaires were used to capture the views of visitors on non-survey days. Forms were distributed to accommodation providers, attractions and tourist information centres within the AONB. In addition to this, self-completion questionnaires were also given to visitors who did not want to stop for a face to face interview (usually due to time or weather constraints). These visitors took the form away, completed it in their own time and posted it back to the AONB. The questions used in the self-completion forms were the same as the face to face interviews to allow amalgamation with those results. There was however Figure 1: Map of survey location areas less chance to qualify answers with comments due to the size of the form. As with the 2005 survey, a self-adhesive A5 format was used. This allowed visitors to seal the edges of the questionnaire making it confidential and easy to send back to the AONB Partnership free of charge. As an incentive to take part in the face to face interview or complete the self-completion questionnaire respondents were offered the chance to be entered into a prize draw for a weekend break for two on the rthumberland coast. 2

2.3 Sample size A total of 1391 responses were achieved. Of these, 1029 were face to face interviews and 362 were self-completion questionnaires. In total, 1294 were visitors to the rthumberland coast and 97 were local residents (Table 1). Although the survey was primarily aimed at visitors to the coast, the views of residents have also been used to give an overall picture of activity within the AONB. Table 1: Number of respondents Visitors Residents Total Face to face Self-completion Total Data analysis The data from face to face interviews carried out by QA Research was electronically scanned into an Excel spreadsheet and sent to the AONB Partnership on a monthly basis. The data from face to face interviews carried out by AONB staff was manually entered into the same style spreadsheet to allow for easy amalgamation of results at the end of the survey period. The self-completion questionnaire data was also inputted by AONB staff. Due to a number of non-responses in some of the self-completion questionnaires the sample bases vary throughout the report. 2.5 Limitations Ideally the timeframe for the survey would have been longer to allow a year-round picture of activity to be gained. However, due to funding restraints, a shorter six month survey period was used. Whilst this sample does not necessarily reflect use across all the seasons it still represents peak season use and accounts for some shoulder and off-peak periods too. Whilst the survey aimed to be representative of all visitors to the coast there is likely to be under-representation amongst certain visitor groups. In particular there may be more serious cyclists than the sample accounts for as it can be difficult to get cyclists to stop and be interviewed. Visitors from overseas are also possibly under-represented as they could be less likely to take part due to language difficulties. 3

3. Key findings The key findings and their implications with regards to the development of a sustainable tourism strategy for the rthumberland Coast AONB are presented below. Where possible, results have been compared back to the findings of the previous survey to identify similarities and differences in visitor activity and profile. 3.1 Trip pattern Type of visit Respondents were asked to describe their trip from a number of options (Chart 1). A map of the AONB designation was made available to face to face interview respondents staying overnight to determine the location of their accommodation. The most common type of visit was staying overnight in the AONB (37%). The next most popular was a day trip from home (32%). This is a significant increase on the 2005 figure of 21% and does not support the idea that people are cutting down on trips due to the price of fuel. However, it could also be explained by the timing of the survey. Whilst the 2005 survey was carried out all year round, the 2013 one ran from March until August only. As visitors are more likely to take a day trip during these summer months, when the majority of responses were collected, this could explain the increased percentage of visitors on a day trip from home. A number of respondents who answered other were also staying overnight but described their trip as things such as holiday or a walking holiday or did not specify the location of their accommodation. A full list of the other kinds of trip can be found in Appendix 5.2. Chart 1: Type of visit (Q3a) 41% 37% 32% 21% % 15% 11% 7% 7% 6% 5% 2% 1% 1% Staying overnight within the AONB Day trip from home Staying overnight outside the AONB Local resident Other Day trip from visiting friends or family answer Base: 2005: 2389 respondents, 2013: 1391 respondents 4

Overnight stays A breakdown of all overnight visitor types shows that the majority of respondents stayed within the AONB (Table 2). These results are almost identical to 2005 when overall 72% visitors stayed within the AONB and 28% stayed outside the AONB. The fact that nearly three quarters of overnight visitors are staying within the AONB area and also visiting it during the day also suggests there is scope for car free days as they are likely to undertake activities within the local proximity. Table 2: Overnight visitor by type (Q3a) Staying overnight Staying with VFR Other Total Count % Count % Count % Count % Staying within the AONB % 11 44% 21 84% % Staying outside the AONB % 14 56% 4 16% % Total % % % % Length of stay Overnight visitors were asked the total number of nights they were staying (Chart 2). Most visitors staying within the AONB took a break lasting four or more nights. The average number of nights spent within the AONB was 5.64 nights. As three respondents were staying 30 nights or more, the average number of nights without these was 5.63 nights. This is an increase from the 2005 average of 4.71 nights. This increase could perhaps be due to the timing of the 2013 survey which was concentrated over a shorter time frame including the summer school holidays. The poor weather in spring could also have contributed to the longer average with people taking less spontaneous short breaks due to the weather. Chart 2: Short and long stays (Q3c) 58% 62% 42% 38% nights 4-7+ nights Base: 2005: 1585 respondents, 2013: 815 respondents 5

Chart 3 shows the number of overnights stays within the AONB only. The number of nights spent within the AONB ranged from 1-42 nights which was exactly the same as the 2005 survey. The most frequent number of nights stayed was seven nights (35% compared to 27% in 2005) followed by two nights (18% compared to 21% in 2005). A three night stay was also popular with 15% of respondents staying for this length of time (very similar to the 2005 result of 16%). The proportion of people taking a short break (1-3 nights) within the AONB was 37% and the proportion taking a longer break (more than 4 nights) was 63%. This was almost identical to the ratio of the overall sample (38% and 62%). The average length of stay of visitors within the AONB was 5.48 nights. With the exclusion of those staying more than 30 nights the average was 5.35 nights. This was slightly less than the average length of stay for the whole sample but an increase from 2005 when the average number of nights stayed within the AONB was 4.75 nights. 11 Party size Respondents were asked how many people were in their party. The breakdown of responses can be seen in Tables 3 and 4 below. 12 Party size ranged from between one and 100 people. The largest number of children in one group was 18. The most frequent party size of adults was two (52%) and it was most common that a party did not contain any children (76%). The average party size across all respondents was 3.40 people comprising 2.90 adults and 0.49 children. This is a slight increase in size from 2005 when the average party size was 3.27 people (2.57 adults and 0.70 children). Overall 24% of parties contained children and 76% did not. This is less than in 2005 when 34% of parties included children and 64% did not. For parties containing children the average size was 4.86 people, comprising 2.83 adults and 2.04 children. This is a slight increase from 2005 when the average was 4.58 people (2.55 adults and 2.03 children). The average party size for visitors was 3.48 people, made up of 2.98 adults and 0.50 children. In comparison, the average party size for residents was lower. Here the average size was 2.29 people, made up of 1.91 adults and 0.38 children. These results are comparable to 2005 when average visitor party size was 3.44 people (2.69 adults and 0.75 children) and resident party size was smaller at 1.84 people (1.55 adults and 0.29 children). A total of 24% of visitors came with children. Residents were slightly less likely to have a child in the party with only 21% having one. However, this difference is much lower than in 2005 when 37% of visitors came with children compared to just 16% of residents. 8

Party type Respondents were asked who they were visiting with (Chart 4). The most common party type was a couple (42%), a slight increase from the 2005 figure of 35%. The next most popular answer was family (31%) followed by friends (11%). The categories in the 2005 survey differed slightly whereby there was a combined grouping for family and friends which stood at 50%. Added together family, friends and friends and family in this survey give a total of 46% though which is a very similar result. The number of people visiting the AONB alone was 9%, representing a small decrease from 2005 when the figure stood at 12%. This may be explained by the fact there was a smaller percentage of local residents, who are more likely to visit the area alone, in the 2013 survey. Chart 4: Party type (Q2a) Couple 42% Family 31% Friends 11% Alone 9% Friends and Family 4% Tour 1% Other 1% Special interest 1% College or University 0% School 0% answer 2% Base: 1391 respondents There were significant differences in party type when the sample was broken down into visitor and resident responses (Chart 5). In particular, more than one third of local residents (35%) visited the area alone compared to just 7% of visitors. As with 2005, the number of special interest groups that visit the area is still very low and more could be done to engage and encourage this type of visitor, particularly if their interest is a low impact activity such as bird watching or walking. 9

Chart 5: Breakdown of party type (Q2a) Couple 30% 43% Family 25% 31% Friends 8% 11% Alone 7% 35% Friends and Family 2% 4% Tour 1% 0% Other 1% 0% Visitor Resident Special interest College or University School 1% 0% 0% 0% 0% 0% Visitor Resident answer 0% 2% Base: 2005: 2389 respondents, 2013: 1391 respondents Dog owners Respondents were asked whether they had a dog with them (Table 5). The results confirm that the AONB is a popular destination for dog owners with just over one fifth of respondents visiting with one. Table 5: Do you have a dog with you? (Q2b) Local residents Visitors Total Count % Count % Total count Total % Yes 26 27% % % 71 73% % % Total % % % 10

Repeat visits Respondents were asked if they had visited the rthumberland Coast AONB before and if so how many times (Table 6). The results show a very high rate of repeat visits to the AONB as 84% had visited at least once before. This is slightly higher than the 2005 figure of 80%. For those that had visited previously, 34% had been 1-5 times before, 14% 6-10 times and 36% more than 10 times. 16 3.2 Transport use All forms of transport used Respondents were asked to identify all the forms of transport they had used on the day of their visit to the AONB (Chart 6). Multiple answers were possible for this question so the results add up to more than 100%. As in 2005 car/van/motorbike/ motorhome was the most common form of transport (89%), followed by foot (34%) and then bus (4%). Chart 6: Kinds of transport used (Q4i) Car/van/motorbike/motorhome 89% 88% Foot 31% 34% Bus 4% 4% Bicycle 1% 2% Coach tour 0% 2% Train 2% 1% Other 1% 2% Base: 2005: 2389 respondents, 2013: 1391 respondents 12

Chart 7 shows there were significant differences between residents and visitors in the kind of transport used, with by foot the most common form of transport for residents (57%). Chart 7: Breakdown of transport used (Q4i) Car/van/motorbike/motorhome 52% 91% Foot 32% 57% Bus 4% 8% Bicycle 3% 1% Visitor Resident 2% Coach tour Visitor Resident 0% Train 1% 0% Other 2% 1% Base: 1294 visitors, 97 residents 13

Main form of transport used Respondents were also asked to identify the main form of transport used whilst visiting the AONB that day (Chart 8). As in 2005 the main form of transport was car/van/motorbike/motorhome (77%), followed by foot (13%). However, it is encouraging to note that the percentage of car users has decreased by 8% since the last survey and the number of people travelling by foot has increased by 3%. Chart 8: Main kind of transport used (Q4ii) Car/van/motorbike/motorhome 77% 85% Foot 10% 13% Bus Bicycle 2% 2% 0% 2% Coach tour 0% 2% Train 1% 1% Other 0% 1% answer 2% 3% Base: 2005: 2389 respondents, 2013: 1391 respondents 14

A breakdown of the responses shows that whilst the main form or transport for both visitors and residents was car/van/ motorbike/motorhome, the percentages vary greatly and that residents are four times more likely to travel by foot than visitors (Chart 9). Chart 9: Breakdown of main kind of transport used (Q4ii) Car/van/motorbike/motorhome 47% 79% Foot 11% 46% Bus 2% 5% 2% Bicycle Visitor Resident 0% Visitor Resident Coach tour 0% 2% Train 0% 1% Other 0% 2% answer 1% 4% Base: 1294 visitors, 97 residents 15

3.3 Awareness of the rthumberland Coast AONB AONB Awareness Respondents were asked whether they were aware they were in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (Table 7). The overall rate of awareness was 90%. This was slightly lower than in 2005 when 95% of all respondents stated they were aware they were in an AONB. However, as with the 2005 survey, the results of this question should be treated with caution. Many people had been prompted about the rthumberland Coast AONB at the start of the survey when its purpose was being explained and they were asked about their trip type. Table 7: Are you aware that you are in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty? (Q6) Local residents Visitors Total Count % Count % Total count Total % Yes 96 99% % % 1 1% % % Total % % % Sources of information used Respondents were asked to identify all the sources of information they had used to plan their trip before coming to the rthumberland coast (Chart 10). As it was possible to give multiple answers the results add up to more than 100%. Overall, been before (58%), internet (29%) and local knowledge/live locally (27%) were the most common sources of information used. Whilst the 2005 survey results are not directly comparable with this question, the three most common sources of information listed by respondents when they were asked how they had found out about the area were, visited before (54%), local knowledge/live locally (27%) and friends/colleagues recommended it (16%). Whilst the percentages for been before and local knowledge are almost identical, the big difference between the surveys is the increased use of the internet. In 2005 just 5% of visitors had used this information source to find out about the area compared to 29% in

Chart 10: Sources of information used pre-trip (Q5ai) Been before 58% Internet 29% Local knowledge/live locally 27% Word of mouth 14% Visitor guide 7% Tourist information centre 6% Promotional leaflet 4% Smart phone app 1% Other 9% Base: 1391 respondents 17

Chart 11 shows the most common pre-trip source of information used by visitors was been before (61%) which is perhaps not surprising considering the high number or repeat visits. The next most common answer was the internet (31%) followed by local knowledge/live locally (23%). Chart 11: Breakdown of sources of information used pre-trip (Q5ai) Been before 14% 61% Internet 2% 31% Local knowledge/live locally 23% 87% Word of mouth 1% 15% Visitor guide 2% 7% Visitor Resident Visitor Resident Tourist information centre 1% 6% Promotional leaflet 0% 4% Smart phone app 1% 1% Other 1% 10% Base: 1294 visitors, 97 residents 18

Respondents were then asked to select the main source of information they had used to plan their trip pre-arrival (Chart 12). The most common answers were been before (42%), local knowledge/live locally (20%) and internet (16%). Chart 12: Main source of information used pre-trip (Q5aii) Been before 42% Local knowledge/live locally 20% Internet 16% Word of mouth 5% Visitor guide 2% Tourist information centre 1% Promotional leaflet 1% Smart phone app 0% Other 6% answer 7% Base: 1391 respondents 19

A breakdown of the responses in Chart 13 shows the main source of pre-trip information for visitors was been before (45%) followed by the internet (17%) and then local knowledge/live locally (15%). A total of 6% of respondents also listed other as their main source of information. These responses included caravan club, newspaper advert and owning a caravan or second home in the area. A full list of other sources can be found in Appendix 5.2. Chart 13: Breakdown of main sources of information used pre-trip (Q5aii) Been before 10% 45% Internet 1% 17% Local knowledge/live locally 15% 87% Word of mouth 0% 6% Visitor guide 2% 1% Visitor Visitor Tourist information centre 1% 0% Resident Resident Promotional leaflet 1% 0% Smart phone app 0% 0% Other 1% 6% answer 0% 7% Base: 1294 visitors, 97 residents 20

Respondents were also asked how they had planned their visit that day to see if information sources differed post-arrival (Chart 14). Again they were asked to select all types of information used before identifying the main source. As it was possible to give multiple answers the results add up to more than 100%. Overall, the most common sources of information used were been before (53%), local knowledge/live locally (24%) and internet (20%). Chart 14: Sources of information used today (Q5bi) Been before 53% Local knowledge/live locally 24% Internet 20% Word of mouth 12% Visitor guide 7% Promotional leaflet 6% Tourist information centre 5% Smart phone app 1% Other 8% Base: 1391 respondents 21

Chart 15 shows a breakdown of visitor and resident responses. As with the previous question the most common sources of information that visitors used to plan their day whilst in the AONB were been before (55%), internet (21%) and local knowledge/live locally (20%). Chart 15: Breakdown of sources of information used today (Q5bi) Been before 15% 55% Internet 1% 21% Local knowledge/live locally 20% 86% Word of mouth 1% 13% Visitor guide Tourist information centre 1% 1% 5% 7% Visitor Resident Visitor Resident Promotional leaflet 0% 6% Smart phone app 1% 0% Other 3% 9% Base: 1294 visitors, 97 residents 22

Respondents were then asked to select the main source of information they had used to plan their trip to the AONB that day (Chart 16). The main sources for the overall sample were been before (43%), local knowledge/live locally (18%) and internet (13%). Chart 16: Main source of information used today (Q5bii) Been before 43% Local knowledge/live locally 18% Internet 13% Word of mouth 8% Visitor guide 2% Tourist information centre 2% Promotional leaflet 2% Smart phone app 0% Other 6% answer 6% Base: 1391 respondents 23

In terms of visitors, the main sources of information used to plan their trip to the AONB that day were the same as the pretrip information sources (Chart 17). Been before was most frequent (46%) followed by internet (14%) and local knowledge (13%). A number of respondents also listed other as their main source of information. These sources again included caravan and second home ownership as well as maps and through a bus or tour company. A full list of other sources can be found in Appendix 5.2. 29 3.4 Activities Activities participated in Respondents were asked which activities they had participated in or planned to participate in during their trip (Chart 18). As multiple answers were given the total is more than 100%. Results have been compared back to 2005 where possible, however categories marked with an asterisk were new to 2013 and therefore do not have any corresponding data. Overall, the three most popular activities in the 2005 survey remained the same for 2013 with going for a short walk being most common (71%), followed by eating and drinking out (59%) and visiting attractions (41%). Common other responses included a boat trip, fishing, photography, a picnic, relaxing and swimming. A full list of these responses can be found in Appendix 5.2. 30 There were several differences between the activities undertaken by visitors compared to residents (Chart 19). In particular, residents were less like to eat and drink out compared to visitors as well as far less likely to visit attractions and sightsee from their car. 31 Respondents were then required to specify what their main activity that day had been (Chart 20). As can be seen in the chart below, the top three activities undertaken have not changed since The most popular main activity is still going for a short walk (22%), followed by visiting attractions (15%) and then going for a long walk (12%). 32 A breakdown of main activities shows that visitors are far more likely to visit attractions, go for a long walk and sightsee from their car than residents (Chart 21). The results also show that very few people visiting the AONB regard bird watching or cycling as their main activity. These are low impact activities that have the potential to be developed further. Other main activities undertaken by visitors included a Farne Islands boat trip, photography, a picnic and relaxing. A full list of these responses can be found in Appendix 5.2. 34 3.5 Satisfaction Satisfaction with facilities and services Respondents were asked to rate various facilities and services that they had used within the rthumberland Coast AONB (Chart 22). A sliding scale of satisfaction was used with a score of 1 indicating very poor through to 5 being very good. If respondents had not used the service or facility then they could answer did not use. The varying uses of different facilities and services amongst respondents resulted in a differing sample size per provision so no base rate is shown. The results show that accommodation, walking routes and AONB guidebooks were the facilities respondents were most satisfied with. Visitors were least satisfied with car parking, shopping, public transport and toilets. These were the same lowest ranking facilities as in 2005 and suggest that improvements in these areas still need to be made. It also highlights the continuing importance of these elements in the visitor experience. Chart 22: Satisfaction with facilities and services (Q9a) Accommodation Walking routes AONB guidebooks Cycling trails Availability of locally produced food Variety of attractions Tourist information centres Information panels Eating out facilities Range of activities available Car parking Shopping Public transport Toilets Improvements within the next five years Respondents were asked if there was anything in the AONB that they would like to see improved within the next five years. The question was open ended with the responses categorised under the headings in Table 9. The main improvement that respondents thought should be made was to toilets. In particular, visitors felt that there should be more toilets available, especially in the car parks at Bamburgh and on Holy Island. Some also felt that the current facilities were old and needed to be upgraded. Parking was also noted as a significant area for improvement. Respondents felt that there should be more parking available, it should be cheaper or free and that the car parks needed resurfacing. In addition, roads were identified as needing improving. In particular respondents suggested that surfaces needed to be repaired and that sections of the A1 should be converted to dual carriageway. 30

Litter, especially on beaches, was also regarded as an issue. Linked with this were a number of comments about a lack of bins in the area including suggestions there needed to be more available. Many respondents felt that an increase in the number of bins would help reduce the amount of litter and dog fouling in the area. In terms of eating out, several respondents noted a lack of cafes and restaurants and that they would like to see more seafood available. Other areas for improvement included transport (more frequent and better service), signage (coastal paths), activities and facilities (such as wet weather provisions, boat trips and tours) and cycling (safer routes). A full list of the comments made can be found in Appendix 5.2. 37 Special qualities In order to ascertain why people visit the rthumberland Coast AONB users were asked if there were any qualities they particularly liked about the area that made them want to visit there. Special features that made people want to visit included its beaches, scenery, coastline, castles, views, wildlife and beauty. The peace and quiet and ruggedness of the area were also noted as attractive qualities along with it being noncommercialised and unspoilt. The full list of qualities can be found in Appendix Supporting sustainable tourism Visiting times Users were asked about their willingness to support sustainable tourism. The first question in this section asked respondents to select the times of year they would consider visiting the area (Table 12). Whilst the summer months were a popular time to visit, there was significant willingness to visit the area out of season too. Table 12: What time(s) of year would you consider visiting? (Q13a) Jan-Mar Apr-Jun July-Sept Oct-Dec Xmas/NY School hols only All 37% 86% 79% 47% 20% 9% Visitors 33% 86% 78% 45% 17% 9% Residents 82% 92% 90% 85% 59% 13% Base: 1391 respondents In order to understand why they would consider visiting at the different times of year respondents were asked to qualify their answers (Q13b). Reasons for visiting all year round or specifically out of peak season included: Accommodation is cheaper (also easier to book it for the weekend only out of season) All year for walking Avoid the school holidays Best for birds Dog walking is good in winter Every season is different Fewer people Good all year round if you re wrapped up It is quieter Live nearby Own caravan/second home so can come anytime Reasons for not visiting outside the peak period often referred to better weather and longer days in the summer as well as having children and being restricted to visiting during the school holidays. Some respondents also mentioned that more attractions were open during the summer months too. The full list of comments can be found in Appendix

Willingness to carry out sustainable activities Respondents were presented with a series of sustainable tourism activities and asked to state the extent to which they would be willing to carry them out (Table 13). A sliding scale of 1 (not at all willing) to 4 (greatly willing) was used. As the number of people who responded to the different sections of this question varied, no base rate is shown. Buying local food or products was the activity that respondents were most willing to support, followed by using green or sustainable cafes or restaurants and then walking or cycling more. The activity that elicited the lowest level of support was limiting car use whilst visiting the AONB. Table 13: Willingness to support sustainable tourism activities (Q14) Action Resident Average Visitor Average Overall Average Buy local food or products Use green or sustainable cafes or restaurants Walk or cycle more Use green or sustainable accommodation Make a contribution to a conservation scheme or environmental fund Use public transport more Limit the use of my car

In order to understand these levels of willingness, respondents were asked to qualify their answers. Table 14 provides a summary of the reasons given and indicates how these desired sustainable actions might be best achieved. The full list of comments made can be found in Appendix 5.2. 40 3.7 Visitor profile Gender For the overall sample 42% of respondents were male and 58% were female. Age Respondents were asked which age category they belonged to (Charts 23 and 24). The most common age group amongst both visitors and residents was 60+, followed by and then Overall 93% of visitors to the AONB were aged 35 or older. The results also show that there are nearly double as many visitors aged 60+ than in Chart 23: Visitor age (Q17) 43% 36% 33% 28% 16% 22% % 6% 1% 1% Base: 2005: 2122 visitors, 2013: 1269 visitors Chart 24: Resident age (Q17) 44% 41% 34% 26% 21% 15% % 5% 7% 4% Base: 2005: 267 residents, 2013: 97 residents 36

Region of origin All respondents were asked to give their postcode or country of residence if living overseas in order to establish where users of the rthumberland Coast AONB come from (Table 15). The vast majority (98%) of respondents were from the UK with just 2% of visitors coming from overseas. The main region of origin was the rth East (47%) followed by Yorkshire and The Humber (14%) and then Scotland (9%). The increase in visitor numbers from the rth East could be due to the increase in the number of people on a day trip from home. It could also be due to rising cost of fuel resulting in people holidaying closer to home. 42 A breakdown of trip types in Table 16 shows that perhaps unsurprisingly the vast majority of visitors on a day trip from home originate from the rth East region (88%) followed by Scotland (7%). The rth East also accounts for the most common origin of overnight visitors (23%) closely proceeded by Yorkshire and The Humber (20%) and then the rth West (12%). 43 Visitor spend Respondents were asked how much their party intended to spend during the day of their visit as well as the cost of one night s accommodation. Table 17 provides a detailed breakdown of spend within the AONB for each type of visitor. The 2005 visitor spend has also been included for comparison. Average spend per person was 39.18, an increase of 8.37 since The average total spend per person staying overnight was 40.03, slightly less than those staying outside the AONB who spent The average spend per day visitor was 9.86, just 37p more than in The average spend per local resident was 7.39, a decrease of 1.24 since Table 17: Breakdown of spend per visitor type (Q15) Average expenses ( ) Average accommodation ( ) Average total spend ( ) All per group All per person Staying within AONB per group Staying within AONB per person Staying outside AONB per group Staying outside AONB per person Day visitor per group Day visitor per person Local resident per group Local resident per person

4. Conclusion The 2013 visitor survey has allowed a greater understanding of visitor behaviour to be gained. The results have established trip pattern, transport use, AONB awareness, activities undertaken, visitor satisfaction, potential support for carrying out sustainable tourism actions and provided an up-to-date profile of visitors to the rthumberland Coast AONB. The results also show that in terms of visitor activity and profile very little has changed since the last survey was carried out in Implications Results from the survey have helped to inform the AONB s sustainable tourism strategy. The main implications for the strategy can be seen below. Aim 1: Develop low impact products and encourage low impact activities The number of special interest groups visiting the area is low. There is potential for development in this area, especially with low impact activities such as walking, bird watching and photography The most common activities undertaken were going for a short walk and eating and drinking. Circular walks can encourage both these activities and also present a good opportunity to increase visitor spend The number of respondents who cycled during their time in the AONB was low. There is potential to develop this low impact activity further, especially by providing more safe, family friendly rides Cars are the most commonly used form of transport within the AONB. There is also low willingness amongst visitors to limit the use of their car, especially amongst dog owners and visitors with children. This means that car free options and itineraries need to be carefully developed with specific users in mind. They also need to be promoted by accommodation providers to encourage more visitors to leave their car at home To encourage greater use of public transport, information needs to be readily available so that visitors understand what services there are. This requires accommodation and attraction providers also knowing the options available and being able to communicate these to their visitors Aim 2: Promote the rthumberland Coast AONB as a year round destination to encourage more visits outside peak periods This high repeat visit rate suggests potential to encourage visitors to come back to the area in different seasons. There needs to be clear communication about the seasonally distinctive opportunities available Visitor information needs to promote year-round experiences on offer. After been before and local knowledge, the internet was the main source of information for visitors meaning websites should reflect the changing landscape accordingly 40

The comments respondents made about why they would be willing to visit all year round are useful for understanding what visitors find attractive about the AONB in different seasons. These should be used to encourage visitors to come out of season Most visitors to the AONB originate from the rth East region. There is potential for these people to visit all year round, especially if there is more to do. Festivals and events and attractions that open for longer periods are ways of attracting these visitors Aim 3: Encourage initiatives that highlight the local distinctiveness of the area and contribute towards a unique visitor experience High levels of willingness to buy local food and produce and use green or sustainable cafes or restaurants were shown by respondents. In order to capitalise on this it is important to make sure that such food is available, service providers have information about it and that visitors are encouraged to buy locally Aim 4: Provide a supportive environment for businesses to work together, carry out sustainable actions and offer a high quality visitor experience Car parking and toilets in particular are issues that need to be addressed in order to improve the overall quality of the visitor experience Aim 5: Raise awareness of the AONB s special features and the importance of protecting them The high percentage of visitors with dogs combined with comments about dog fouling shows the need to continue communicating clear messages about good visitor behaviour The fact that most visitors are repeat visitors may work in favour of a visitor payback scheme - if people have an attachment to an area they are more likely to contribute towards its conservation. It also underlines the need to pursue projects with tangible outcomes so that returning visitors can see what their donations have been used for Litter was identified as an area for improvement by many respondents. Rather than introducing more bins the AONB Partnership encourages a take it home policy with regards to rubbish. This message needs to be clearly communicated to both visitors and residents to encourage them to do so 41

Smelling effluence on the beaches Sewage system in Beadnell. Stop parking on Harbour Road Should have a toilet right next to the car park / takes 15 mins to get to the loo. Would have liked to see more local fish / crab Should not pay for using toilets Sign posting ---> driving Signage / country roads and signed very well Signage for coast path in places Signage in Amble needs improving eg. how to access A1068 Signage to attractions Signs to toilets Small supermarket Smokehouse restaurant shut on a Sunday and that's what we came for. Craster kippers are famous Smokehouse restaurant shuts on a Sunday and no signage for Craster off A1, we got lost Some footpath signage on the Coastal Path Some litter bins. More dog bins for dog litter Some of the walking routes near cliff tops need renovating as crumbling away and more toilets in the coastal towns Some public toilets could be a bit "upgraded" Somewhere in Alnmouth to park overnight in camper van Stones along the beach Stop people walking dogs on the beach Stop shooting on Holy Island Surface of car park at Boulmer Swimming pool so that everyone can go in Take away food too pricey Tea at Sainsburys The A1 needs improving from Berwick to Alnwick The A1 to get here The A1 to have 2 lanes. Dual carriageway all the way up there The ability to recycle more. Don't do roadworks in summer when most people visit area The beach looks filthy here / the promenade could be more tourist friendly The beach needs cleaning here 113

The beaches are spoiled by rubbish (cans, plastic bottles) The bench in the bird hide too wide to accommodate camera/tripod The bigger boats going to the Farnes could do with toilet facilities The High Street - looking back from when I was young, for a historical town, they've spoilt it. All you get is charity shops. Put it back to how it was - keep it in keeping with history The opening times of the castle. More cafés The promenade here looks a bit run down The quality of cycle trails and their location The quality of food on the coast The roads The roads The roads - they are awful The roads are full of pot holes in Berwick area, they need seeing too The roads into the island The roads pot holes The seating area - café near the visitors centre The stepping stones on the bridle way near Alnmouth station were flooded and there was no info The surface of the car park is uneven and no top surface even needs redoing The toilet facilities in Alnwick (near TIC - only 2 loos - one flooded!) The viewing tower, it's not in keeping with the area. Too new looking The village hall on Holy Island The village hall on Holy Island The weather The weather. LOL There are no toilets in the car park and you have to walk right up the road to nearest ones There aren't many bins, when out walking the dogs, to put their poo in There isn't a toilet near the car park and with a few kids in tow it's a big problem They could do with a toilet in the car park as you are dying for the loo and then have a long walk to find a toilet They could do with a toilet in the car park, you have elderly and children parking up so need a toilet there They should promote the bus services by ensuring all the B&Bs and hotels have timetables Think car parking is too expensive. t enough locally produced food To be able to get food in between 1430 and 1700 Toilet facilities at all the beaches Toilet facilities near beach. Waste bins on beach for rubbish and dogs. More buses from Seahouses/Bamburgh Toilets Toilets Toilets Toilets Toilets Toilets Toilets Toilets - more of them 114

Toilets - more, free parking Toilets - not enough of them Toilets added to car park Toilets along rthumberland Coastal Path few and far between Toilets and car park poor, all need updating Toilets and car parking quite poor Toilets are a long way from car park, most people need the loo as soon as they park up Toilets are old and smelly. More disabled access needed to shops Toilets are old and ugly and need updating Toilets are old worn out and need completely revamping Toilets are quite a distance from where you park up / awful if you are dying for the loo Toilets are small, cramped and need to be renewed. Smelly as well Toilets are too far away from the car park Toilets are too far away from the car park you have to walk for mins Toilets at Druridge Bay- websites should be up to date- Beer festivals- events Toilets cramped and smelly Toilets in Bamburgh need 20p seen to on 20p engaged sign Toilets in Beadnell need seeing to, been closed Saturday and Sunday Toilets in or near the car park Toilets in Seahouses car park are very bad. Could do with Coast Hopper bus service Toilets nearer beach car park [willing to pay] Toilets need improving in Beadnell. Hope Beadnell Bay stays the same. Toilets need revamping, not nice. Range of activities depends on your preferences. Car parking (but if change, number of people change), like its rawness Toilets needed in the car park - you have to walk to find one Toilets old and car park inadequate for all the cars Toilets old and outdated. Would like to see outdoor swimming pool lido purpose built with lots of boat trips, sea type things here Toilets should be situated near the car park. Car park all rutted and difficult to drive into Toilets too far from the car park, not good for young and elderly Toilets, signs/ information boards Toilets. Path down by river needs evening out Toilets. Free parking Tourist information centre and car parks Tourist office should have more knowledge about walking Tractor driver to be paid by N.C.C. to comb beach of seaweed and rubbish Transport links Trig point needs a lick of paint at Emmanual Head Trig point needs painting at Emmanual Head Upgrade public toilets and car parking Upgrade the road surfaces and public transport Very steep entrance to castle Warning about quicksand and problem of beach crossing Wave garden [flow rider] Weather 115

Weather Weather was so bad, couldn't get down to the beach When you park up in the main car park there are picnic tables, ice cream van, but no toilets. Really bad if you have been in the car for a long time Widen the A1 Windmills taken down Would like a direct bus service from where we live to come there Would like an express bus to Berwick from Newcastle Would like another supermarket as there is only the Co-op and it's very expensive, that's all Would like less styles - walk with large dogs cannot get over them which ruins are holidays/walks Would like more to do here, there are no cafes or coffee shops and parking is difficult as car park in a bad state of disrepair Would like to buy local fish / crab / herring / lobster or kippers Would like to go to the Farne Islands from Holy Island Would like to see more new toilets built in the coastal places like Seahouses, Amble and Bamburgh Would like to see more places displaying times of crossing for Holy Island Would like to see toilets in the car park across from the castle. where to go to the loo Would like to see toilets next to the car park Would like to take the dog in Alnwick Castle. Think very narrow minded that not allowed in with dog. Also boat trips Would like to use public transport. Bus services poor Residents Activities in the area All fine Along the riverside the road needs resurfacing - that's all. Pelican crossing on the High Street Availability of parking Berwick town centre shops Better bus service to go to around the area Better bus service. gas in village. Stop people parking outside homes, it's a nuisance Car parking Car parking - residents can't park for tourists Car parking - the car park is old, covered in pot holes and dangerous for drivers. Needs resurfacing Car parking needed Cleaner streets, cleaner pavements Cleanliness of the street Could publicise Alnmouth more. More parking and a visitors centre Cyclists ride as though the roads are for them alone Decent park for smaller kids. Cinema for older children Don't know Don't know of any Don't want it spoilt by over-development. That's all Footpath from Seahouses-Bamburgh. Less building on the coastline Free parking General clean up Improve facilities on main tourist beaches eg. Bamburgh 116

It should be free parking. Shops need less rent/rates. Litter bin men passing my window at 5 or 6 AM It's all fine Keep as it is Keep it the way it is as it's so beautiful as it is. The attraction is that it's not overdeveloped. The views and open aspect needs retaining Leave it alone Local transport to Newcastle Market. Get rid of cars in the centre More car parking in Craster More car parking in the summer in Seahouses, Bamburgh and Beadnell More care taken with planning permission to protect the environment of area of outstanding beauty More eating places. Cheaper or free overnight camper vans More litter bins and bins for dog poo More local buses More opportunities for cafés and restaurants More parking More petrol stations More toilets More toilets More toilets, bigger shops, have ladies shops Naturally gets more parking Need a new selection of shops, especially ladies wear and shoe shops Need more major stores like BHS, Debenhams and clothes stores Need much bigger variety of ladies, men, children s clothes and shoe shops, everything is well balanced, leave it alone. Maybe the road surfaces, nothing, or maybe clean shop fronts, general tidy up ne thing thing thing at all thing, leave it alone Parking in Berwick. Better shops 117

Paths repaired and ramps for people with wheelchairs and scooters. Around housing estate is terrible. Something needs doing. competition with food shopping because of Co-op - charges are very expensive People picking up their rubbish and dog mess Picnic areas Play park, pub, soft play and eating area Public toilets, more adventure activities e.g. cycle paths and climbing Public transport and training for tourism businesses Public transport needs to run at later times from Alnwick and more frequently Public transport would encourage less cars, extra bus is not adequate Road surfaces. windmills Roads Roads and footpaths potholed and worn - need redoing Roads, car park Standard of the beaches Take down wind turbines, spoils area The high street The High Street - the shop frontage is very poor. It doesn't go with the character of the town The parking The roads are full of potholes, there's not enough dual carriageway Toilets are locked at should be open much later Toilets too far away from the car park Too many people coming to the island We could do with a few big department store eg. Debenhams, Fenwicks, more car parks, a really good restaurant, like Gordon Ramsay or Jamie Oliver and more toilets Would like an open air lido with theatre and restaurant facilities Qu12.
