A Short History of YHA Hostels in South Australia 1948 to 1998

YHA Hostels in South Australia 1948 to 1998 Page 2 Introduction by the author to the first impression: I have written this short history in the 50th anniversary year of the formation of the Youth Hostels Association in South Australia so that there would be a record, even if it is only an abbreviated version, for those who are interested in how YHA was developed in this state. While every endeavour has been made to ensure accuracy I must apologise if there are any errors or significant omissions. With respect to names I have shown maiden names in brackets for those where I know both surnames. All others are the last known surname of the person which could be a either a married or a maiden name. Being a short history only and not a definitive record I have needed to take decisions regarding the contents including the degree of detail which is included. For example: activities and the personalisties involved is only covered for the period to the end of the 1960 s. As I do not have sufficient information about how the Activities Committee organised itself, the various personel involved and the activities programmed I am not qualified to write about the period from I have however included a sample of a 3 month programme which was published in the association s magazine. The administration of the Association is also only briefly covered as it is not the scope of this short history to analys this aspect in depth. This history is a private publication and the information contained therein is based on personal reminiscences by various persons and myself as well as published public papers from YHA. I have also based the chronological record on an article written by myself and published in the Association s magazine Hostelling for the 40th Anniversary of YHA in Opinions expressed in the history are of course my own and I take responsibility for them. There is a picture gallery in section 10 of the history some of which also appeared with the original 40th anniversary publication in the YHA magazine Hostelling Many photos were taken by Margaret Williams as well as other members including the writer. The text for this publication has been produced in such a way that it can be easily amended and a new version printed with the updates. Printing is based on the receipt of orders. There is no official price for the book but a donation of $15 per copy would be gratefully accepted to defray costs of printing and binding. David Hunter, Norwood S.A. 4 YHA Hostels in South Australia 1948 to 1998 Page 4 1. FORMATION OF THE ASSOCIATION 1948 As early as 1940 the National Fitness Council of S.A. (NFC) had considered the idea of setting up youth hostels in South Australia and in fact that is what was done with the establishment of hostels by them at Mt Lofty, Nairne, Norton Summit, Lobethal and then Mylor and Aldinga. These were the precusers of the larger camps which NFC set up later at Mylor and O Sullivan Beach. NFC was an initiative of the Federal Government in 1939 which provided funds for all states to establish such councils for the purpose of promoting fitness in the general community. For further information on the history of the National Fitness Council in S.A. readers are referred to the history written by the last Director of the Council Mr. A.E. Simpson (Ref: The National Fitness Council of South Australia - A History A.E. Simpson) The formation of YHA (Youth Hostels Association) was particularly encouraged by Miss Helen Black employed by the National Fitness Council as Assistant Director who with others that had traveled overseas and taken part in outdoor activities thought the formation of an Association in South Australia would encourage outdoor activity and also assist young travelers. Ray Sedunary offers the following thoughts about the role that England and Wales members had in the formation of and the philosophy which YHA adopted in South Australia. He starts with a quotation from YH Story by Oliver Coburn regarding the history of YHA in E & W - The YHA was born because many people ardently desired it and worked hard for it. That is why, despite it s lack of worldly wealth it was from birth an extremely healthy infant. That appraisal can be legitimately applied to the birth and health of YHA in South Australia. Many of the early members of the Association had hostelled in Europe and in particular England & Wales. Development of the Association s objects was influenced by their experience and S.A. hostelling attitudes almost exclusively followed that of England and Wales, modified only by scale and environment. Some of this influence was re-inforced by the arrival of active UK members who visited the state for varying periods of time in the mid 50 s and 60 s. Some were RAF personnel and others were associated with activities at Woomera, Edinburgh air force base or the research establishment at Salisbury north of Adelaide. Others had immigrated to Australia and South Australia had the good fortune to receive more than it s share of their talent. The first public meeting: The first public meeting to form an Association was held in the Public Library Lecture Room, Institute Building, North Terrace, Adelaide on 23rd August, 1948 The meeting was chaired by Inspector W.J. Delderfield At this meeting the following persons spoke on aspects relating to the formation of an Association - Mr. D.S. Clegg - spoke on Youth Hostelling Miss Helen Black - spoke on Hostelling Abroad Mr. A. Cuddihy - spoke on Canoeing on the Murray (A film on canoeing from the Canoe Club of YHA of Victoria was shown) Mr. H.A. Lindsay - spoke on conservation and walking. At the meeting a Provisional Committee was elected consisting of :- Mr. H.A. Lindsay Mr. J. Brocksopp Mr. Dix Mr. R. Emes Miss D. Whitten

Haslam National Fitness Council was to be represented by a member of the Council or a staff member representing the Council Meetings of the Provisional Committee:- The Provisional Committee met on 27th August, 1948 at which all those elected at the public meeting were present plus the two representatives from NFC, Mr. L. O Donnell and Miss Helen Black. At the meeting Mr. Brocksopp was elected Chairman of the Provisional Committee and Miss Whitten Secretary. A sub-committee was formed to draw up rules consisting of Mr. H.A. Lindsay, Mr. Dix and the 2 representatives from NFC. It was decided that the Constitution and Rules of the Association would be based on those used by other YHA Associations. An inspection of the existing National Fitness Council hostels was organised for the 11th September, The recruitment of members was to be by personal talks and the provision of a suitable brochure. It was agreed that there be 3 NFC representatives to be appointed to the committee with all having a deliberative vote on any matter. Mr. Lindsay discussed walking areas and clothing. The next meeting of the Provisional Committee was held on 24th September, 1948 with Miss H. Black, Mr. D.G. Clegg and Mr. L. O Donnell representing NFC. There was an apology from Mr. Dix. A sub-committee was appointed to design a membership card format - this consisted of Miss Helen Black, Miss D. Haslam and Mr. Dix. The Publicity Officer for the public meeting to be held on 13th October, 1948 was Mr. J. Brocksopp. It was suggested that Sir Frederick Richards be approached to become president of the Association. The proposed Constitution and Rules were presented to the meeting and adopted with amendments of a minor nature made. This would be presented for adoption at the public meeting for the formation of the Association to be held on 13th October, From the visit to hostels it was noted that there was a fire hazard present at the Nairne Hostel. Correspondence received - AYHA, sample of membership card AYHA, names of persons wanting pen friends Mr. R. Marshal, an English hosteller asking about activities in S.A. National Fitness Council would assist the Association as much as possible. Suggested a request be made to them for a grant of $40 (20 pounds) for expenses and ongoing maintenance of hostels. In addition NFC hostels will be made available to YHA members.

YHA Hostels in South Australia 1948 to 1998 Page 6 Arrangements for the public meeting on 13th October, Miss Black had booked the Library Lecture room. 9 YHA Hostels in South Australia 1948 to 1998 Page 9 The following were the persons elected at the first AGM held on 1st September, 1949 President Sir Frederick Richards Vice Presidents (2) Mr. O Loughlin (from NFC) Mr. A. Baker (Director of the Tourist Bureau) Chairman Mr. C. Harris Secretary Mr. R. Jensen Assistant Secretary Mr. Hodgson Treasurer Mr. E. Dix Route Adviser Mr. H. Bill Lindsay Committee members: Mr. G. Jackson Mr. J. Philp Mr. L. Carruthers Miss A. Lucy Discussion topics during the first year of the Association: Administration - Membership cards were printed and tabled at the committee meeting held on 27th October, 1948 In August 1949 a donation of 2/6 (25c) from Ida Philpott was acknowledged in the minutes together with her membership subscription of 7/6 (75c) Outdoor Activities - The first trip organised by the Association was that to Mt. Lofty & Norton Summit as advised to the inaugural meeting. The leaders were Mr. Gepp and Mr. O Donnell. On each trip there were 6 participants but on that led by Mr. O Donnell only males were in the party. Photographs for a strip film were taken and 50 feet of movie film shot. It was suggested that hostellers going to hostels on excursions either organised or privately might like to do odd jobs of maintenance to assist the Association & NFC. A list would be left in each hostel of the work needed to be done and on completion they could be crossed off the list and details entered into the log book of the hostel. Cycling trip to Nairne and Lobethal organised for the 20th November, 1948 and led by Mr. Emes. On the same date a walking trip to be led by Mr. Griggs was also arranged.. At this time chaperons were required for all mixed parties. A list was to be compiled for this purpose. Miss Haslam was requested to act as chaperone for a trip organised on 6th November, It was planned that the remainder of the colour film would be shot on 31st October, (It is uncertain from records whether the film was 2 lots of 50 feet long or one film of 50 feet shot in two takes) A work party was arranged for 4th December, 1948 at Norton Summit and took place as organised. Another was tentatively arranged for the 22nd January, Miss Philpott to lead a walk between the 7th and 12th January, 1949 and Mr. Jackson was organising a cycling tour from 14th to 16th January, The trip by Miss Philpott took place and consisted of a walk using four of the hostels available to members.

YHA Hostels in South Australia 1948 to 1998 Page 10 A canoeing trip was organised on the River Murray with Mr. Griggs and Miss Philpott in charge and was successfully completed having paddled between Morgan & Mannum. The cycling trip took place and was reported on by Mr. Emes. The working party for Norton Summit was moved to the 12th March, 1949 and took place as scheduled. Work undertaken included calcimining the front of the hostel, windows prepared for reputtying and other walls prepared for calcimining. A discussion took place on organising day walks for migrants (mainly British and displaced persons ) and leaders were to be canvassed through the medium of the newsletter. Walking, cycling and canoeing trips for Easter 1949 were being organised and would appear in the newsletter. A report was given by Mr. Jackson on the walking trip to Mt Lofty during Easter. Work parties were planned for Norton Summit on 3rd/4th December and Mylor for 19th/20th December, (Norton Summit work party was later transferred to Mylor as that hostel was required to be completed for the official opening by Sir Frederick Richards during the AYHA conference in January, 1950) It was decided that a letter of thanks be sent to Miss Tessa Beneke for all her assistance during 1949 (she was not at that time a member of the committee). Social Activities - In the first year it does not appear that there were organised social activities such as club nights or get togethers. Members visited each other in their homes and organised social occasions amongst themselves. The first organised clubnight appears to have been arranged for the 19th May, 1950 in the NFC offices in Verco Building, North Terrace, Adelaide. The first Christmas Party was arranged for Christmas 1950 and was held at the Arcadia Cafe in Bowmans Arcade, King William Street (the site is now a multistory office building and was the Taxation Office until the mid 90 s) The cost was 85c! It is noted that authority was given for the Treasurer to pay the pianist that was engaged for the evening, 2 Guineas in the old currency (2 pounds 2 shillings) ($4.20) Publicity and Newsletter - The newsletter was seen as a positive publicity medium together with talks to interested persons. On the 27th October 1948 a sub-committee was formed consisting of representatives from the areas of activity (canoeing, walking and cycling) and a representative from the National Fitness Council. It was agreed that all members of the association would be listed in the newsletter and NFC was to act as the postal address for the publication. It would appear that the first newsletter was issued in November 1948 as the second was referred to at the December 1948 meeting. A publicity sub-committee appeared to have been set up and it was recorded that Mr. Emes and Miss Philpott were appointed members of the committee in relation to publicity and the newsletter. Moves were made concerning the production of a brochure/pamphlet for promoting the Association in the general community.

YHA Hostels in South Australia 1948 to 1998 Page 11 In June 1949 a tender was received from Hyde Park Press to print pamphlets at a cost of 4 pounds 10 shillings per thousand ($9) and a order was placed for 1500 of these. This pamphlet was reprinted a number of times up to September, 1950 with a total of around 5,000 being printed. Letters were written to Sir Willoughby Norrie (Governor of S.A.), Hon. T. Playford (Premier of S.A.) and Mr. J. McLeay (Lord Mayor of Adelaide) requesting their assistance and support in promoting the Association.

YHA Hostels in South Australia 1948 to 1998 Page THE OPERATIONS OF THE ASSOCIATION 1948 TO 1998 (When YHA began the unit of currency in Australia was the pound with shillings and pence. This was converted to dollars and cents in 1966 based on a dollar being equivalent to the old 10/- shillings which was half of 1 pound. For ease of writing I have decided to quote all costings in the dollar equivalent of the old pound) 1948 The Association was provisionally formed on 23rd August, 1948 at a meeting held in the Public Library Lecture Room, in the Institute Building on North Terrace, Adelaide. Meeting was sponsored by the National Fitness Council of South Australia and actively encouraged by Miss Helen Black, Assistant Director of the NFC. The first meeting of the Provisional Committee appointed at the inaugural meeting was held on 27th August, The Association was formed by persons interested in walking and other outdoor activities. The Association did not own hostels but had the use of four hostels viz. Mt. Lofty, Norton Summit, Nairne and Lobethal, owned by NFC. At this time members of the provisional committee included the Chairman, Mr. Brocksopp and the Secretary, Miss Whitten. On the 13th October, 1948 the second public meeting was held at the same venue at which the Constitution and Rules were adopted. Membership fees for Seniors set at 75c. Elected Committee members included - Sir Frederick Richards, President; Mr. Osman, Chairman; and Miss. Whitten, Secretary. The activities programme consisted of walking, cycling canoeing and hostel trips (including workparties) in the main At the first AGM held on 1st September, 1949 it was reported that the Association had printed a brochure, had 78 Senior members, 10 Junior members and was printing a regular newsletter. YHA had also put a lot of effort into work parties to assist NFC with its hostels and that a new hostel was to be opened at Mylor in a few months. The fledgling Association had become a member of AYHA (Australian Youth Hostels Association) and was to hold a conference and rally at Mylor in January, AYHA Conference and Rally held at the NFC Camp Mylor during which the Mylor hostel was officially opened. South Australia had within two years of its formation been organised enough to host the AYHA Annual Meeting, conference and rally! Tessa Beneke becomes involved with YHA administration at this time. Many prospective hostel sites had been looked at during the year and close cooperation continued with the National Fitness Council. At the AGM in August the following was reported: Total membership was 131, total funds on hand were $124 approximately Overnights totalled 470 (YHA members in NFC hostels) with the overnight fee 10c or 7.5c for YHA members. NFC charged a special price to YHA members at this time.

YHA Hostels in South Australia 1948 to 1998 Page At the AGM for 1951 it was reported that the Aldinga hostel was progressing. Funds in hand totaled $249 approximately. The Association continued its close involvement with AYHA. Meetings were being held in the Adelaide Bushwalkers rooms An offer of a shed at Vimy Ridge (Bridgewater) for use as a hostel was made by Miss Waterman. Mr. Ray Sedunary becomes involved with YHA Joining with a friend Jim Jolly. Ray remembers that he was involved in walking activities, hostelling and camping and he attended his first clubnight in the Advertiser Building. The guest speaker was Enid Heritage talking about her painting trip through Europe. He was to continue his involvement for nearly 30 years. The Aldinga Beach hostel was opened by the local member of state parliament; Mr. Peter Brookman during November, At the AGM it was reported that funds totalled $495, new membership cards and badges were to be issued and a new constitution was adopted after amendments. Membership totaled 279 and overnights by YHA members were around 700. During the year Miss Tessa Beneke arranged with Mr. A.E. Simpson; the Director, for YHA to have the use of the NFC office and facilities on Tuesdays from 5.30pm to 8.30pm to allow members to carry out YHA business such as membership and hostel bookings as well as arrange activity and other programmes Funds on hand were $281, turnover for year was $1,021. Overnights by YHA members were 682 with membership at 231. During the year a Nissen hut was purchased for erection on a site at Mt Crawford. Mr. Peter C. Angove became president of the Association which position he was to hold until his death in 1979 (a total of 26 years) 1954 Membership totaled 306 and overnights by YHA members had fallen to 341 which could have been due to the fact that many members preferred to camp out. The Nissen hut purchased in 1953 was now erected on the site in the Mt Crawford pine forest. All work was being carried out by volunteers Membership was steadily rising and now totalled 446 while hostel overnights by YHA members had fallen to 236 School parties were very active at this time with the Education Department paying towards the costs of such excursions. Tessa Beneke and Margaret Williams were two members who took many groups of school age children on hostel trips. A school hostelling bank account had even been set up at this time. Additional information on School Hostelling is set out in section 6 of this history By the end of 1955 Mt. Crawford was deemed to be within a few months of opening.

YHA Hostels in South Australia 1948 to 1998 Page 14 Publicity included a display in the Tourist Bureau window which was on the eastern side of King William Street between North Terrace and Rundle Street (now Rundle Mall) Other displays were at Myers (Rundle Mall) and the Boy Scout Shop (Pirie Street) 1956 Membership was 450 and overnights by YHA members totaled 294. There was $540 in the bank account and the turnover for the period was $1,550. The Mt. Crawford hostel was completed during the year and opened in May 1956 by Hon.B.A. Teusner M.P. who was the member of state parliament for the area at this time. This was the first hostel built, owned and operated by the Association Income for the year was $1,402 and cash at the bank had risen to $780. Membership was 361 and hostel overnights which now included Mt. Crawford were 377. It was reported that activities were well attended at this time. A new brochure was printed and articles appeared in the newspapers from time to time. AYHA was strongly supported by YHA in South Australia during the 1950 s and would continue to be so right through until the present day. The need for a strong national organisation was always considered to be most important. The National trust of S.A. was formed during this period and Miss Margaret Williams was the first YHA representative on the Council. The constitution of the trust (which was based on that of the National Trust of England & Wales) gave various groups including YHA the right to a representative. This remained so until the 1980 s when the trust was reorganized and community representation abolished. The first property offered to the Trust was at Roachdale, Kersbrook (owned by Miss Hilda Roach) and YHA negotiated the lease of a site on the property for the erection of a hostel. The construction of the hostel begun in During the year the Association became incorporated under the recently passed Associations Incorporation's Act as an incorporated body. This meant that it was now a legal entity with the rights and responsibilities of an individual (i.e. it was a separate legal entity to its members) and the committee members and the general membership were protected in the event of litigation. This was arranged by Brian Chapman who was at the time the Honorary Auditor of the Association. Membership had dropped from the high in 1955 and was now 299. Overnights totaled 451 and it was noted that 43 of those were by members from interstate/overseas. By the end of 1958 $588 had been spent on the Kersbrook hostel building. School hostelling had dropped away also, probably because leaders were not available and in fact activity had almost ceased Work parties involving the Kersbrook hostel reduced general activities and were a drain on the interest and energy of members. The hostel was a much more ambitious project than the Mt Crawford hostel which was of very basic construction and facilities. Kersbrook would be fully

YHA Hostels in South Australia 1948 to 1998 Page 15 lined, have gas cooking, properly partitioned dormitories and a large commonroom/kitchen/dining area with a free standing fireplace. Membership was 309 and hostel overnights had risen to 540. Total income for the year was $1,114 and the bank balance stood at $940. National Fitness Council was investigating the possible establishment of a hostel in the south east of the state. The 1959 AYHA conference and rally was held at Mylor in January Membership had improved during the year and now totaled 420. Overnights were 408 with 112 of these by interstate/overseas members. Membership fees at this time were $2.50 for seniors, $1 for juniors over 15 years of age and 50c for those under 15. Hostel fees ranged from 15c to 25c. (In 1950 they were 7.5c (9 pence)) In January, 1960 the Kersbrook hostel was opened by Major General Symes. ABC television channel 2 covered the opening of the hostel. The National Fitness Council took over the harbormasters house at Beachport for a hostel in association with the local Apex group at Millicent. The lease for the NFC hostel at Norton Summit was transferred to the Association which took over the control and operation of this hostel. YHA then had 3 hostels either owned or operated by them. At the AGM in 1960 Mr. D. Hunter became treasurer of the Association which position he held until the early 1970 s At this time YHA was using space at the new NFC rooms at South Terrace ( later shared with Adelaide Bushwalkers in a room at the rear of the premises) at the then new NFC office on South Terrace Adelaide (now the Sport Medicine Centre since the demise of NFC). NFC had also helped with office space when it was situated in the Verco Building on North Terrace. Miss Tessa Beneke who had become a member of the NFC staff carried out much business on behalf of YHA during office hours and arranged for access to the NFC office for YHA to provide additional service to members on Tuesday evenings. Even when YHA moved into its own premises the Tuesday evening openings continued until Membership remained at good levels totalling 430 and hostel overnights increased to 520. The Association owned/leased 3 hostels at this time. During the year however the lease of Norton Summit was terminated. The Association now had assets of $3980 with a turnover of $1,159 and cash on hand of $440. During the year a lease was taken out on a cottage in the Kuitpo state forest and work begun on its conversion into a hostel. NFC now transferred the leases and control of the hostels at Mt Lofty and Mylor. Work was undertaken at Mt Lofty to upgrade the hostel and this was carried out in the main by David and Dorothy Kimber (nee Morris) with assistance from other members. Since the formation of the Association YHA on South Australia was strongly supported by the National Fitness Council and its assistance during those years was crucial to the well being of the Association. While NFC assisted YHA in many ways it also encouraged the Association to take charge of its own affairs and that was greatly appreciated by the administrators of YHA.

YHA Hostels in South Australia 1948 to 1998 Page During the year negotiations for a hostel site at Norton Summit were finalised. Beachport received the first of its upgrades and a septic system installed. Funding for this came in the main from NFC with YHA members volunteering to assist in the work. Total income for the year was $1,460 and assets were $4,346. Membership was 491 with overnights recorded of 618. Square dancing became a popular activity with members and publicity included speaking to schools, window displays and items on local TV stations The AYHA conference and rally was held at the NFC camp at Parnanga south of Adelaide. (3rd AYHA meeting in South Australia) YHA of S.A. joined the Youth Council of S.A. Income for the year was $1,290 and total assets reached $4,821. Membership improved to 618 and overnights were lower at 536. Kuitpo renovations were moving along with some additional equipment purchased. (The equipment from the former hostel at Norton Summit had been moved to Kuitpo in 1961) Gas was installed at Mt Lofty for cooking and some renovations carried out at Mylor. Mt Crawford was in need of urgent repairs. At Beachport the Millicent Apex carried out work which included provision of bunks, water pump and gas installation for cooking The National Trust made available a small shed on the Narutti Reserve at Aldgate Valley which was then opened as a small one room 5 bed hostel during the year. The National Fitness Council of S.A. granted $200 towards the renovations being carried out at the Mylor hostel. Membership was now 742 and overnights have risen to 938. Miss Hamilton, a former employee of the NFC, was employed part time as a Clerical Assistant for the Association. This was the Associations first paid employee. A weekend planning conference attended by members of the Executive Committee was held at Mt. Lofty. A report was prepared as a suggested plan for future development of the Association The YHA office moved to 72 South Terrace, in a small house owned by a Mr. John Douglas who also acted as a caretaker for NFC at 68 South Terrace. The initial rental was $8 per week and remained at that rate until the death of Mr. Douglas in Mrs. Jenkins was employed as an additional part time staff member with the office opening from 11.00am to 3.00pm Monday, Wednesday & Friday together with the Tuesday evening from 6.00pm to 8.00pm This started on 1st January, NFC made a grant of $500 towards administrative costs. Memberships improved again to reach 845. Overnights reached a peak of A small hostel was also opened on 72 South Terrace, using spare rooms in the building. It is believed to be the first inner city hostel in Australia.

(Government Minister and Vice President of YHA of S.A. who helped in acquiring the lease of the hostel from Woods & Forests) 1966 Income for the year was $3,255 and total assets were now $11,157. Overnights improved with the operation of the Adelaide hostel to 1815 with 351 recorded by overseas members. Membership reached a new high of 1157 Geoff Nairn a young newly graduated architect student designed a building for erection on the Norton Summit land. A bank loan for $2,700 was obtained to cover the building costs of $6,000 Mylor hostel was completely re-decorated and an open day was held on Richard Schirrmann Day to allow members to view the refurbished building. YHA became involved with the S.A. Mountain Activities Federation which was formed to promote safety in the bush and give walking clubs a united voice on such matters as safety and leadership standards. David Lam of Hong Kong a participant in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme visited and took part in Association activities. Ray Sedunary, Chairman of the Association was also Chairman of AYHA, a position he held for some years. Through AYHA, YHA of S.A. took on the task of organising a trip to attend the IYHF Conference and Rally in Japan in Participants were to be drawn from all AYHA member states. YHA of S.A. members attended a number of IYHF conferences over the years including Elsie Ahrens, Elaine Royce, Ada (Penrose) Wright, Jack Philp and Tessa Beneke who attended in the 50 s. Ray Sedunary was to attend a number of such conferences as AYHA Chairman Assets of the Association at this point were $11,523 with cash funds of $1,889 Total income for the year was $3,265 Ross Harding and David Hunter prepared a paper for the Executive Committee suggesting that the organisation of activities be transferred to a sub-committee so that the task of administering the Association could be concentrated upon by the executive. This arrangement was put in place and the sub-committee formed with a representative being on the Executive Committee. This was later incorporated into a new constitution adopted at a later date which set up Regional Committees for activities which had two representative each on the Executive Committee. So the Adelaide Regional Group came into being and was known as ACTCOM (Activities Committee) Norton Summit hostel was opened on the 1st April, 1967 by Hon R.R. Loveday M.P. Minister of Education. At this time Glen Woodward was the Chairman of the Association as Ray Sedunary had become a Vice President to ensure that as Chairman of AYHA he avoided any conflicts of interest which may arise in also being Chairman of YHA of S.A. During this year membership was 1305 and overnights totaled Hostel fees were 40c per night except Adelaide which was 50c! A new hostel was organised at Robe in the Ormerod Cottages which were privately owned by Mr & Mrs Priest. Mrs Priest was involved with the Duke of Edinburgh s Award Scheme and became aware of YHA and thought their house at Robe could be used for hostel accommodation.

YHA Hostels in South Australia 1948 to 1998 Page 18 As a consequence of the arrangements being made with Qantas in organising the group to the conference and rally in Japan two film evenings were organised promoting travel and YHA and held in the Union Hall at the University of Adelaide. About 200 persons attended each of the sessions (The hall had a capacity of 499) This would appear to be the first such organised travel information evenings held in Australia. At the time of writing this history a number of states organise such information evenings which have reach a much higher level of sophistication than that which was first held in 1967 YHA in S.A. hosted its 4th AYHA Conference and Rally at Macclesfield during the January Australia Day long weekend. This was the last time such a meeting was held in South Australia as the concept of a members rally together with the AYHA annual meeting/conference was scrapped when a new AYHA constitution was adopted a couple of years later and only an Annual Meeting was held with representatives attending from each state. Observers were permitted but no members rally was organised The association depended for its well being on a strong membership basis and as travel was a major reason for joining YHA all of the 40 approximately travel agents in Adelaide at the time were visited and information given out. This concept of keeping agents up to date with brochures and information has continued and included regular brochure drops, sending copies of the Associations magazine to each and in the 1990 s encouraging agents to join members on the payment of commission (10%) For example up to 20,000 copies of the AYHA generic brochure were distributed in Statistics showed that a good 10% of new membership came directly from travel agents. While YHA S.A. did not have the administrative resources to control membership issuing agencies (as in NSW) every effort was made to tap into the travel market through travel agents. Membership was 1353 and overnights 3661 (including 521 overseas member stays) The small 7 bed hostel on South Terrace recorded 1056 overnights for the year. Income for the year reached $4,905 and total assets were $12,227 From August 1969 a part time administrative officer (David Hunter) was appointed at the rate of $1 per hour (based on a 12 hour week initially) The cost was offset by the salary grant received from NFC of $500. The Para Wirra hostel was leased at this time and work was being undertaken to complete renovations for an opening in At this point in the Association s history 9 hostels were being administered by the Association. Moves were underway to establish a more suitable large hostel in Adelaide and Geoff Nairn prepared some preliminary drawings for a 70 bed facility. A number of prospective sites were looked during this time but none came to fruition. A new constitution was being prepared by David Hunter and Ross Harding at this time to reflect better the administrative structure of the Association which had changed over time and to include the newly established regional group activities committee as set up in Adelaide in the previous year. The group booking organised by YHA of S.A. and co-ordinated by Tessa Beneke was very successful with 15 persons from 4 Australian states taking part. Following the Conference the President of IYHF Dr Anton Grassl visited Adelaide and spent a few days which included local excursions and a visit to Norton Summit hostel.

YHA Hostels in South Australia 1948 to 1998 Page 19 Dr Grassl was also given a reception at the home of Glen Woodward where he was met by the Director of Education, Alby Jones. Jack Catchpool one of the founders of YHA in England & Wales also made a private visit to Adelaide and contacted the Association. He was a guest at the home of Ray Sedunary (the Chairman) where he was able to give him information about IYHF and its operations. Noteworthy persons: In the first 20 years of the Association many people were involved in the development of the organisation but their names are often not mentioned. As a tribute to their work a list is included here to acknowledge the contribution which was made by them to the progress of YHA - Allan Arthur Diana Bravington Dean Croger Sid & Audrey Gray Lindsay Haynes Garth & Ida Jackson (nee Philpott) Bill & Margaret Jenkins John Massie Andrew Passell Jack Philp Ian Poole Enid (Heritage) Ryan Don Schneider Malcolm & Ron Simms Don Tyson Jill Whistlecroft Margaret Williams Bruce Wilson Glen Woodward Bob & Ada Wright (nee Penrose) Peter Ziegler 1969 The 12 bed hostel at Para Wirra was opened by the Chairman of the National Parks Commission, Mr. T.N. Lothian. The building was leased from the National Parks Commission who undertook various exterior works while YHA renovated the interior. This was also the first time that fees retained for capital works from the joining fee charged to new members was used to fund renovations. An associate hostel was established at Port Vincent in a hostel built by the local Girl Guide group through YHA member Miss Jean Tucker. This hostel became available in April of 1969 The need for a new Adelaide hostel was becoming urgent and investigations continued into suitable buildings or sites. Office accommodation was also thought to be inadequate and unattractive but this problem was to remain for at least a further 14 years mainly as the present situation was financially beneficial with the low rental being paid. The need for improvements at Mt. Lofty, Beachport and Kersbrook hostels was acknowledged and a sub-committee known as the Hostel Improvement and Maintenance Sub Committee (HIMS) was formed and a thorough review undertaken and a report prepared. This committee is still operating (1998) and over the years has prepared reports and undertaken works to improve S.A. hostels. It is only by constant revision and review that an organisation can remain aware of shortcomings in facilities provided to members and ensure that action is taken to rectify the matter, even if it takes longer than one would like it to. Overnights were now 4474 and membership was The total receipts for the year was $9,174 and assets totaled $14,301

YHA Hostels in South Australia 1948 to 1998 Page 20 NFC through its Grants Advisory Committee continued the annual salary assistance of $500 per annum which began in A donation of $100 was received from the Advertiser from its skillwords competition. Constitution review continued with consultations with interstate association In June 1970 the Association fully printed the magazine Hostelling rather than a printed cover with duplicated internal pages. Prior to that it was known as the YHA Hostel Yarn The new name was decided upon at the same time as fully printing each issue. (For those interested in reading any of the fully printed issues, the Mortlock Library, North Tce., Adelaide has a full set (Ref No b) as well as the archives of the YHA office in Adelaide). The Hostelling magazine continued to be issued with the last issue being in March 1997 when a national magazine was established with editorial control based in Sydney. During 1970 the hostel at 72 South Terrace (two rooms in the administrative office) was closed due to the difficulty of control with no warden or manager and volunteer fee collection. The extra space would be used for storage and office space. A feasibility study was undertaken regarding possible office accommodation needs but no action was taken for some years. Ross Harding and David Hunter reported to the Executive Committee on a property for sale in Gilles Street, Adelaide which consisted of 5 self contained flats in various buildings on the site. It was agreed that this be purchased at a cost of $17,500 and the flats retained for income until suitable plans for conversion could be prepared. Plans for the renovation of the building to provide 16 beds were prepared by a member Maxwell B. Weir who offered his services to the Association at very competitive rates. He was also responsible for the plans for renovations at Beachport, Inman Valley, Kersbrook and Mt Lofty hostels over the ensuing years. Overnights for the year were 4539 and membership jumped dramatically to Total receipts leapt to $15,243 and assets doubled to $30,965 A deposit note scheme was instigated to provide funds for the purchase and renovation of the Adelaide hostel in Gilles Street which raised $3,495 The deposits were for 10 years and after the initial period members were invited to retain the funds on deposit which continued until the 1990 s when all funds were repaid. In the second issue members had a choice of cash interest payments or certificates for overnights at South Australian hostels. The problem of operating hostels without keyholders.wardens/managers was discussed but no answer was readily available with low use hostels. The Association had to rely on the goodwill of local persons to act as keyholders with minimal supervision of the hostel so that they continued to be available to members. Many hostel improvements remained outstanding as there were insufficient funds at the time to rectify high cost items such as proper toilets and ablutions at Mt Lofty & Kersbrook. Minor low cost maintenance items were however addressed where possible Membership increased again and was 2760 while overnights dropped to 3941 due to the closure of the old Adelaide hostel on South Terrace. Total receipts for the year improved by some 50% to $21,031 while assets increased to $40,069 The Adelaide hostel was opened by the Premier of S.A., Hon. Don A. Dunstan M.P. Llb., on 11th December, The accommodation was provided in two dormitories of 8 beds and the first

YHA Hostels in South Australia 1948 to 1998 Page 21 managers were Mr. & Mrs. Steve Woodger. Beds, mattresses, pillows and bedding valued at $1,000 were donated by the Adelaide West Rotary Club whose president at the time was a Mr. Jack Turner principal of Norman, Turner & Nottage, furniture manufacturers of Wright Street (now ceased trading). Total cost of the project was $25,600 including the original purchase. At the opening of the Adelaide hostel the premier announced that the former school at Inman Valley would be transferred to the Association The new Constitution for the Association was approved at the Annual General Meeting and approved by AYHA. A publicity brochure for use in S.A. was produced and printed by the Western Australian YHA based on their own brochure designed by Geoff Dean. The brochure was reversible depending on the fold so that there was a brochure suitable for overseas membership promotion on one fold and a local/interstate information on the other. This type of brochure was printed at least twice with alterations to text and pictures. The photo for the local activities included Ross Harding (seated on ground) and Garry Breen (in cap with beard) For the first time the Association was asked to assist at the Schutzenfest in Hahndorf and also to have a stand dispensing information on YHA services and activities. In return the Association received a donation from the proceeds of the Schutzenfest. This arrangement continued for 26 years until YHA did not assist at the 1998 event which is now held in Adelaide. Richard Schirrmann Day celebrations were a highlight of the year with a combined dinner being held with the German Association and YHA., a natural history forum at Norton Summit YH and a progressive dinner arranged by ACTCOM (Adelaide Regional Group Activities) at Mt. Lofty Mylor & Norton Summit hostels. In addition Ray Sedunary was presented the Richard Schirrmann Medal by the Consular General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. F.O. Gaert, in recognition of his services to hostelling and on behalf of the German YHA. This took place at the office of the German Consul in Adelaide. From March 1971 David Hunter became the full time Administrative Officer of the Association. He was also assisted financially by the NFC to undertake the Group Work Course which they established, at the S.A. Institute of Technology (now the University of S.A.) He had completed this course by The grants scheme operated by NFC was transferred to the Department of Community Welfare which set up a Grants Advisory Committee Overnights for the year increased dramatically to 7058 and membership jumped by around 25% to Turnover also improved to $27,533 and assets rose by around $8,000 to $48,039 Plans for the renovation of the Beachport were being finalised with an initial cost estimate of $17,000. Plans for the conversion of the Inman Valley School property transferred to the Association were being considered with a possible two stage development envisaged viz. Stage beds; Stage beds in total. The Community Welfare Grants Advisory Committee allocated $500 towards staff salaries. Richard Schirrmann Day celebrated with a forum at Norton Summit on the theme of the environment. This was the first full year of operation with a full time staff member and the benefits were clear with many projects in hand as well as a real effort being made to determine the level of comfort and
