2 STATEMENT and FINE PRINT Information World War 2 Jeeps NSW is NOT a formal Motor Vehicle Club, but more an Association of WW2 Jeep enthusiasts, bonded together by this e newsletter. It s sole intention is to share information about their vehicles, future displays, trips and events. It was founded in 1991 by the late Peter Walker in an effort to bring together genuine users of the legendary Jeep. Contact can be made with the current Committee as per the addresses on the cover. Joining information for new members is, a sense of participation and contribution to the Association for your benefit and that of others, your address for sending of the newsletter, (this can be of a family member or friend if you don't have one Don t forget to tell them!), a good colour picture of your Jeep along with a few words of your Jeep related history, so we can introduce you via a Member Profile. If you have any Jeep related restoration talents, please let us know and whether you are prepared to offer any advice to fellow members. If you really like what we do, then a Donation towards our HQ development. Members, their relatives, friends or guests are reminded that some Four Wheel Drive activities, events or trips notified herein, can be extremely dangerous. Participation in any activity, event or trip is entirely up to the individuals discretion and that no responsibility, what so ever, can be held against any land holder, group or individual, for what ever situation that may arise, in travelling to or from or during the course of that activity, event or trip. If we are participating in an activity, event or trip organised by others outside of the Association, we do so as a group of individuals at their invitation. Prior contact with the person organising any particular activity, event or trip advertised herein is mandatory, to avail yourself with the most up to date and correct information, as dates and itinerary can change due to unforeseen circumstances. Finally, views expressed in our newsletter are also individual and do not necessarily reflect the Association as a whole. Membership lists forwarded from time to time are for the benefit of those listed for contact purposes amongst each other only and are not intended for dissemination to third parties or to be used for soliciting of unrequested services and or advertising material. 3 Cliffs Say... First of all I would like to wish a happy birthday to well known WW2 Jeep identity Neil Goodo Goodridge who has just turned the tender young age of 60 and is officially a member of the Old Fart s Club. Happy Birthday from all of us at WW2 Jeeps NSW. Corowa is coming up and the trip to Corowa through the Snowy Mountains has been chosen. If you are interested please, your leaving it a bit late, but you can contact John Swane on (0488) or Mitch Holland on (0418) The trip will take a week from this Wednesday 13 March to Wednesday 20 March 2013 and so far there are four Jeeps confirmed (John, Mitch, Brian Sweet and myself). Basic plan is to head south after all meeting in Goulburn (Paragon Café in the main street, around 9:30 / 10am). It is proposed to have lunch at Captains Flat and spend the first night on Jackoooo s brother property at the junction of the Numeralla and Badja Rivers, east of Cooma. The next day will be spent travelling over the Snowy Mountains, a bit of touring, a bit of four wheel driving, camp another night somewhere to finally arrive in Corowa for the weekends activities, which as usual are huge. Rusty my 1942 Ford project is going ahead slowly but surely. The engine and gearbox have been done, diffs ready to go and a lot of reassembling. I know I have still got a long way to go. The chassis needs some major repairs which will hold me back for a while. Don t forget about the Marathon Spares auction at Tamworth in May which I, for one, won t miss. I will see if I can pick up some parts for Rusty. If not it will still be a good weekend as it is always interesting to see what people buy and have a good talk to all our fellow Jeepers. "Ooh!" said the presenter, "This is a very rare set, produced by the celebrated Johns Brothers taxidermists who operated in London at the turn of last century. Do you have any idea what they would fetch if they were in good condition?" See Part B for the story of this lot! "...Sticks?" Paddy replied. Jeep News No.139 March 2013

5 From a great collection of British war pictures that is on a website called Macca, a regular holidayer to Bali spotted these outside a couple of local 'establishments'. At least one of them is owned by the proprietor of a bar or restaurant. When he first showed me the pics (amongst others), I suggested that if he could send them to me a mate, (Mitch), might make use of them. Cheers Shep and thanks Macca Top - taken on Jalan Padma (i.e. Padma Street) Legian, Kuta - Bali Bottom - taken on Jalan Padma Utara, Legian, Kuta - Bali (I think we have definitely seen one of these before ED) Continuing the Page 5 theme. This was made up of two s. A crusty old Marine Sergeant Major found himself at a gala event hosted by a local liberal arts college. There was no shortage of extremely young idealistic ladies in attendance, one of whom approached the Sergeant Major for conversation. "Excuse me, Sergeant Major, but you seem to be a very serious man. Is something bothering you?" "Negative, ma'am. Just serious by nature." The young lady looked at his awards and decorations and said, "It looks like you have seen a lot of action?" "Yes, ma'am, a lot of action." The young lady, tiring of trying to start up a conversation, said, "You know, you should lighten up. Relax and enjoy yourself." The Sergeant Major just stared at her in his serious manner. Finally the young lady said, "You know, I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but when is the last time you had sex?" "1955, ma'am." "Well, there you are. No wonder you're so serious. You really need to chill out! I mean, no sex since 1955! She took his hand and led him to a private room where she proceeded to "relax" him several times. Afterwards, panting for breath, she leaned against his bare chest and said, "Wow, you sure didn't forget much since 1955." The Sergeant Major said, after glancing at his watch, "I hope not; it's only 2130 now." GOTTA LOVE THE 24 HOUR CLOCK!!

More details from Larry Stewart (0417) or larry.stewart@sydneywater.com.au WAR and PEACE REVIVAL For those planning a trip to the old dart, it is on from the 17th July to the 21st July at RAF Westenhangar in Hellfire Corner (Folkestone Racecourse UK. Received the buckle and it is as nice as could be. I've been meaning to contact you as it seems you knew my cousin Jack Hicks. He was a long lost relative discovered a few years ago, my grandmother was Nellie Hicks. He came to the states a couple times to visit the family. The first time out he was at my sisters house and the talk turned to dirt bikes then jeeps. Oh yeah I said mine is right out front, well Jack goes out to look and declares no doubt about we are related! On that that trip I gave him some parts including a rifle rack for his dash, took it right on the plane with him, maybe he mentioned how it came about. He had invited my uncle John and I to go on a run with the club and passed just before it came to be. I'll join the NSW club in honour of Jack and to read the news letters featuring him. See picture of the latest project. Regards, Mark Benedetti Welcome Mark and thanks for making contact. I speak for many within the Core NSW group of the much larger Association, called WW2 Jeeps NSW, to say that Jack was a dear friend and great supporter of not only us, but many Veteran and Returned Services groups, would be an understatement. His sudden departure has been many peoples losses. I will send you a complete archive of our Newsletters and you will be able to trace Jacks connection with this group in the nearly 20 years since he was a founding member. We all have plenty of stories to relate and many indeed did that in the editions following his death. Cheers MITCH CAMP COFFS 3 to 8 October 2013 More details later.

Well Harry has turned up to a lot of our Gigs and we welcome him, but he looks like his thoughts might have bitten off a tad more than they can chew! Well... Did I fire six shots or only five? I kinda lost track in all this excitement Erase that thought Harry!

Some you may have seen before, like the photos over page, others, perhaps not. Thanks Mate, we say! Some interesting shots of a Jeep modified in Korea as an armoured car. Looks just like M A S H You can see Hawkeye and the gang sipping Martinis around the fire place in that tent and the Bell C47 s coming down that valley with some wounded Armoured Car drivers! 16 European Correspondence Greetz Ingo Something from Ingo, that was sent last year. Rein acting to the Max! Couple of links to a Russian web page of an event that I assume was a celebration of a battle in 1943 in which the Ruskies triumphed over the Jerries. From the pictures, it looks like it happened over a number of days and involving hundreds of people to go to the nth degree. Watch out for the pop up adverts, they could be nasty! Trench building and living. Day to day living, cleaning the rifles Cooking etc. Even down to the morning exercises! Jeep News No.139 March 2013

18 Battle Day and the troops are on the move. They are taking it pretty seriously. Who volunteers to get singed? MEDIC!!!! Jeep News No.139 March 2013

19 MEDIC!!!! That is a pretty good look of anguish there and something you might see on a real battlefield, but I don't think you would have time for a fag there comrade? MEDIC!!!! A shot of Vodka will do the trick!

20 Looks like someone over in Europe has found the snow, as can be seen from some pictures sent to us from Ingo recently

21 DIDJA KNOW? - SOME TRIVIA FROM PHIL HEESCH Nobuo Fujita, the Japanese pilot who flew over Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Wellington, Auckland, and Fiji during WWII and carried out the only (unsuccessful incendiary) bombing attacks on the US mainland (Oregon) in WWII. He did all this in the same two-seater Yokosuka E.14Y1 Glen floatplane keep in pieces in a watertight compartment on the deck of Japanese submarine I-25. The aircraft, when assembled, was lowered over the side by a deck crane - it was retrieved the same way after landing near the sub. Fujita was located many years after the War and was feted when he subsequently 're-visited' the US and presented his Samurai sword. (Incidentally, NSW's most significant aircraft wreck site is arguably that of another Japanese 'Glen' floatplane used to spot fleet dispositions within Sydney Harbour prior to the Japanese midget submarine raid of 31 May This aircraft, was launched from submarine I-22, when stationed north-east of Sydney. The still unlocated aircraft capsized when returning from its mission, the crew rescued but the plane scuttled. This incident represents the only Axis aircraft lost in combat off NSW.) The only German U-boat operating in Australian waters in WWII was the U-862 captained by Heinrich Timm who had worked in Australian waters when in the merchant marine between the Wars. The U-862 was a type IXD2 long range U-boat - one of 3 or 4 based at Penang after Japan had captured Malaya. On Christmas Eve 1944 he surfaced off Moruya on the NSW South Coast and sank the US Liberty Ship Robert J Walker - firing 6 torpedos at the ship before it was ultimately sunk (it is now a deep dive wreck for diving enthusiasts). The incident is vividly captured in Dr. David Stevens great book - U-boat Far From Home - now out of print and costing $200 or more via E-bay. I have met with David at the Sea Power Centre (Australian Navy History Unit) at Fyshwick here in Canberra - he is an authority on WWII submarine warfare in Australian waters. Incidentally, these particular long range German U-boats had a 'poor-mans' equivalent of the 'Glen' - a one-seat gyrocopter on the end of 200 metres of cable, allowing an elevated observer (sitting some 100 metres or so up in the air above the water) to better scan the horizon whilst being towed along at a good surface speed by the sub - ABSOLUTELY TRUE. Interestingly, after Germany's surrender in May 1945, the U-862 put into Singapore, the Japanese 'locked up' Timm and his crew, and requisitioned the German sub into the Imperial Japanese Navy, but it never saw active service under Japanese command. After sinking the Robert J Walker, Timm headed to WA and sank another US Liberty Ship south of Fremantle - the Peter Sylvester - hardly worth the effort seeing that its only compliment was 100 or so donkeys being taken to the Pacific Theatre for 'pack mule' duty. (Said yes to going to a one day Cricket Match at the SCG, but did not know the date at the time, way back in November. When I walked in with it, he identified it straight away and had some of the missing parts in stock. Roughie. I can vouch for that, I have used Tim for my Carter and more recently for my grey motor Stromberg and found their service and knowledge to be first class and who I have recommended to others in the past They are now basically at the rear of the building on the east side of the Burwood Bus Depot, (a tyre place is in front). Enter via the side street that you have to approach from the east. cheers MITCH Tim Howarth, as mentioned above, I am sure, would not agree with this little item, who Cam said would work on the Jeeps.
