I just hope it is dryer than October and maybe not too cold so I can do some things outside, like pick up the leavers if they ever decide to fall off the trees. I have been doing the U.P. Net Newsletter for a number of years and I will say it has gotten more difficult as time goes on because of some of the things I have to report. It was about a year ago when we lost Bob, W8KP, and that was a hard event to write about. Now I must report on the passing of Dave, W8PZ and that has been very difficult also. I sure don t like this part of the editor s duty. On a more positive subject, you will see we have pictures of a couple of our 4 legged friends that visit some of the net s participant s shacks, fun to include those in the newsletter. Also you will find a nice look at Brad s, KR8P shack. A nice collection of new and more vintage equipment, I love the studio microphone on the top shelf! I would like to feature your shack or your four legged friends in the newsletter some time, send me some pictures! These types of things are what make the newsletter fun! Jim, N8HBZ is looking to trade a 60 foot crank up tower that is on the ground for a dog pen about 10 X 13 feet, sounds like a great deal to me!! 5 SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO THE HAM BANDS For the 12th consecutive year, The 3916 Nets will be staging The Santa Net on MHz. Good girls and boys will be able to talk to Santa Claus, via amateur radio, nightly at 7:30 PM (Central) starting Friday, November 24, The Santa Net will run nightly at 7:30 PM Central through Christmas Eve, December 24, Pete Thomson (KE5GGY), of The 3916 Nets, commented on The 3916 Santa Net. He said, "Christmastime is our favorite time of the year on MHz. We really enjoy being able to help young people experience both the magic of Christmas and the magic of amateur radio." Youngsters can talk to "Santa at The North Pole" via strategically placed relay stations who are responsible for relaying in the voice of Santa. Thomson said that The Santa Net is a team effort that involves the efforts of a number of 3916 Net members. He said, "For over a decade, The Santa Net has connected kids from coast to coast with Santa Claus. With this amount of territory to cover, The Santa Net requires the efforts of a number or relay stations. Our relay stations do a super job and really enjoy bringing the spirit of Christmas to the amateur radio airwaves." Prenet check-ins are welcome each night starting at 7:15 PM central or on Facebook at Third party rules and regulations apply. The Santa Nets are presented annually by The 3916 Nets. The Rag Chew Crew, The Tailgaters and The Freewheelers are all amateur radio nets that meet on MHz. DEATH OF A BLETCHLEY PARK 'LISTENER' One of the heroic Bletchley Park "listeners" of World War II has died. Alison Robins, who taught herself both Morse Code and German during the war and intercepted messages from U-boats around the coast of Britain, was instrumental in passing along those messages to Allied codebreakers at Bletchley Park. Her assignments placed her at various coastal listening stations. She was described in various newspaper reports as the last surviving secret listener of that era. Alison had been in the Women's Royal Naval Service during the early part of the war and also worked at the Royal Naval College. Her daughter Jill Hazell told the Mirror newspaper that the Royal Navy Wren spoke very rarely about her wartime experiences, which involved monitoring communications late into the night. Her husband, Maurice, who also spoke German was sent to that nation before the Nuremberg Trials to help with translations. Alison Robins was 97. She died on the 15th of October in the Westbury Nursing Home in Bristol where she was receiving care for dementia.

Parker age 79, of Middleville, passed away on October 11, He was born in Detroit, MI on Dec. 5, 1937 to Lincoln and Helen Josephine "Jo" (Ramesdell) Parker. David attended Michigan State University graduating in He married Marsha Eriksen on June 8, 1968 in Kensal, North Dakota. Employed with IBM for 32 years until his retirement in Enjoyed biking, and for many years did the DALMAC event's, coached youth hockey GLAHA, Amateur Radio licensed W8NSH now is W8PZ, hiking, camping, traveling. Loved his MSU Spartans, football, and hockey and was a ticket holder for many years. You make a lot of friends in this hobby of ours. Even though you don t go on fishing trips with them or meet them for dinner every week, you make a special ham radio friend who means a lot to you. I have had several of them from the U.P. Net that I no longer have the pleasure of sharing my life on the radio with. Dave sure was one of them, and I will miss him everytime I turn my radio to He was a very good Ham and a very good person. I always admired him for including Marsha in his hobby by the simple act of his checkin, Dave and Marsha in Gun Lake I sure do miss that. 73 and God bless my friend. What happened to Kodak will happen in a lot of industries in the next 10 years and, most people won't see it coming. Yet digital cameras were invented in The first ones only had 10,000 pixels, but followed Moore's law. So as with all exponential technologies, it was a disappointment for a time, before it became way superior and became mainstream in only a few short years. It will now happen again with Artificial Intelligence, health, autonomous and electric cars, education, 3D printing, agriculture and jobs. Welcome to the 4th Industrial Revolution. Welcome to the Exponential Age. Electricity will become incredibly cheap and clean. Solar production has been on an exponential curve for 30 years, but you can now see the burgeoning impact. Last year, more solar energy was installed worldwide than fossil. Energy companies are desperately trying to limit access to the grid to prevent competition from home solar installations, but that can't last. Technology will take care of that strategy.
