Nov. 8th, 6:00 PM AT THE CROWNE PLAZA HOTEL Lift Line Established and now on Facebook LITTLE ROCK SKI CLUB...SOCIAL,TRAVEL & MORE President s Message I hope to see all of you and your guests at the November 8th meeting. Our official club charity is the Rice Depot & we will be asking for your help this one time in the form of a donation that we will present to them on behalf of our membership. You may also donate children s gloves & coats. See page 11. We had another great turnout at the October meeting including several guests & more new members. We are already ahead of last year in memberships! The October Fest theme hit the spot with hot dogs & all the trimmings. Our Social committee is doing a wonderful job on meeting themes and I also want to thank the membership committee for all the hard work they do, including the sign in table each meeting. We now have a Free LRSC Coolie for each member. Pick one up at the sign in table if you did not get one last month. Our two ski trips are sold out, but if you want to ski with us this year, please check with the trip captains for possible add on or cancellations. Second & third payments are due for Big Sky & Snowmass. Our October fish/chicken/shrimp fry party was a huge success, thanks to Carlyn Yancey and her helpers. The weather was perfect & everyone seemed to enjoy the food, friends and the roaring fire. The Friday night Flights Happy Hour is earlier this month and will be on Friday Nov. 11th at Cantina Laredo in the Midtown Center across from Park Plaza. See you there! We are having another Razorback Tailgate Party on Nov. 19th. The last one was a huge success. Check out the details on page 4. Our fabulous SNOW BALL will be the party of the year On Dec. 17th. 4 Razorback Tailgate Party Nov. 19th War Memorial Golf Course Arkansas vs Mississippi State (time to be announced later) Game starts at? If you don t go to the game, you can stay & party or come by after the game. We appreciate volunteers to help clean up. Get ready to wear your red and join your LRSC buddies for a Little Rock tailgate on the War Memorial Golf course. We will set up a canopy and provide the basics which include Hotdogs, Chili & condiments plus soft drinks. Members should bring dishes that go with the above such as baked beans, chips, salads & deserts. The game is set for? so we ll announce the time later on. The location is Z-8 which is the same space we had in Sept. in the middle of the golf course. You may bring your other drinks in a small ice chest & you might want a folding camp chair too. With over 4000 acres of ski trails, Big Sky & Moonlight Basin offer unparalleled skiing opportunities. Take the Big Sky Lone Peak Tram to the 1,166 ft summit & ski the total most vertical feet of any ski area in the US. With views of Yellowstone & three bordering states, you will experience the best Montana has to offer. We have a limited number of space (12) and each participant should be ready to ski their rear ends off at this wonderful ski area. The trip includes round-trip air fare from Little Rock to Bozeman, Montana, round trip transfers from the airport to Big Sky, 7 nights lodging (two to a room) in the slope side Huntley Lodge (named for TV news man Chet Huntley) just steps from the lifts, 5 day adult Big Sky lift ticket (Optional additional day & Moonlight Basin access available at additional cost), full breakfast buffet daily, The lodge rooms have a wet bar, coffee maker, refrigerator & TV. The hotel has the Huntley Dining room, Chet s Bar & Grill, espresso bar, shops, ski storage, the Solace Spa, fitness center, sauna, outdoor heated pool & hot tub. This is a Friday to Friday trip and is sure to sell out fast, so sign up early. The Big Sky Mountain stats are: 400 inches of annual snowfall, elevation of 11,166 ft & a base elevation of 7000 ft. The trails are 26% expert, 33% advanced, 21% intermediate & 20% beginner. You may pay in three equal installments of $ with the first one due at sign up. We cannot hold space without a deposit. We also strongly suggest that you purchase travel insurance for that unexpected kink in your travel plans. As always, you must be current with your dues for the 2011/2012 year. 8 Established 1967 Snowmass February A LRSC FAVORITE Space Limited to 24 people $ pp Always a favorite ski destination for the Little Rock Ski Club, this trip includes: round-trip airfare from Little Rock to Aspen, round-trip airport transfers provided by the lodge, seven nights lodging at the Pokolodi Lodge (located at the base area of Snowmass Village next to the bus stop & about 100 yards from the main ticket office & Cirque Bar & Grill), 5 day adult lift ticket, continental breakfast daily & a welcome reception. We will fly on United Airlines. For the club to receive the best trip pricing, we must sell the trip as a complete package, but it will be possible to get more or fewer number of lift tickets for those who want to ski every day & those who only want to try a few. 11 Share the Warmth with Arkansas Kids Arkansas Rice Depot s Kids Coat Project provides warm coats to students across Arkansas who benefit from our Food For Kids program. Since this program started in the fall of 2009, Arkansas Rice Depot has distributed hundreds of coats to students in need across Arkansas. A counselor at an elementary school in Hot Springs remarks on the Kids Coat Project at her school last year, Just this winter when you sent a note explaining the [Kids Coat Project] I was scrambling to clothe many of our students. The students were equipped with only thin light weight jackets. Most of them didn t own a coat. Our students were delighted to receive a real new coat, not only a new coat but one with tags on it. Our students don t always get new things. Thank you for making our students feel special and worthy of something new. Providing coats is the cornerstone of this program, however when possible hats, scarves and gloves are also provided. Since this project began Arkansas Rice Depot has had a Christmas tree in our lobby decorated with hats, gloves, and scarves by staff and volunteers leading up to the holiday season to benefit the Kids Coat Project. Churches, businesses, and community groups also get involved by holding their own drives to benefit the Kids Coat Project. Arkansas Rice Depot accepts new, never worn coats in both children and adult sizes to benefit students grades Kindergarten through 12 th on Food For Kids. 12 ARKANSAS RICE DEPOT Our Story Way back in 1982, a few caring Arkansans noticed there were a lot of children, families and senior citizens going to bed hungry right here in Arkansas. Many food pantries were struggling for supplies. The cupboard was bare at the shelters. Children were hungry. So these folks organized and looked for food. And they found rice. Home-grown, nourishing and inexpensive rice. They paid for it out of their own pockets and gave it to anyone in need. Soon word spread about this organization that provided free rice to any group willing to fight hunger in their community. And the Arkansas Rice Depot was born. Within a couple of years, nearly one hundred rice growers from Riceland and Producers mills were donating rice. This was just the kind of foundation the charity needed. By 1986, then-governor Bill Clinton helped the Arkansas Rice Depot distribute its one millionth pound of rice. For a while, rice remained the only food distributed, and though nourishing, it wasn't a complete meal. A Billy Graham Crusade changed all that. Six tons of food items were collected that year, and soon dry goods, canned foods, frozen meats and other items were donated, warehoused and distributed across the state. In 1994, an Arkansas public school nurse noticed some children arriving at school listless and hungry. They said their school lunch the day before was the last meal they had. She wondered if the Arkansas Rice Depot could help. Immediately, the Food For Kids program was launched, sending hungry children home with backpacks filled with food every night. Today the Arkansas Rice Depot serves around 600 Arkansas public schools and the Food For Kids backpack program has been duplicated across the US, helping feed hundreds of thousands of hungry kids. Every year the Arkansas Rice Depot feeds around half a million hungry Arkansans, distributing food to shelters, schools, disaster relief efforts and homebound seniors. All with minimal overhead. And in the summer of 2009, Arkansas Rice Depot received national recognition of our programs, when All Roker brought NBC's Today Show to the Depot, with his Lend A Hand program. Through Lend A Hand, Arkansas Rice Depot received a five truckloads of items with a value totaling over $600,000. Local dignitaries came out to join in on the fun. We were one of only five charitable organizations chosen through Lend A Hand. You see, we don't believe in big salaries or glitzy marketing campaigns 98% of all donations go to feeding the hungry. So you can be confident your donation fills an empty stomach. It's how this charity started, and it's how we'll continue our mission.
