Penistone Line Express Issue 74 Summer 2017

From Your Chairman Welcome to our Summer newsletter and it really feels like summer today as the sun is shining! Let s hope the good weather continues; our railway line offers some stunning views when the sun is shining. If you haven t explored the countryside surrounding our line, then now is a great time of year to do it. Our guided walks are great for those who want some company on a walk and this summer we are introducing some slightly shorter guided walks. We are also working with S2R (see page 8) and Team Activ Barnsley to create some self-led guided walks; these will be available on our recently improved website. Thanks go to Sarah Laurel, University of Huddersfield Student who has been working with us on the website. It is very much a work in progress but we are looking for someone who is confident in the use of wordpress to help us keep the website up to date. If you can help, please contact Rowena. Recently we have been contacted by Mark Richards who is working on a book with local Barnsley poet Ian McMillan to produce a book of poetry and drawings. We look forward to the publication of this book later this year. On the topic of poetry we have had some interest shown by a poetry group in Penistone and hope to start a poetry project soon linking all of our stations together! If you have an interest in poetry and would like to get involved please get in touch. Our projects at stations have continued and we are keen to get more and more people involved; if you are a member of a local group or as an individual would like to get involved please get in touch! Back in February we were pleased to be able to handover a cheque to the Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust which was raised on our Christmas Special Train to Skipton (thanks also to the Branch Line Society who contributed too).we are hoping to run another special train next Christmas, and are looking for a local organisation to be our chosen charity. We enjoy involving local communities along the line to have fun and raise funds for those less fortunate. One of the perks of being a volunteer is the fun days out! The Leeds-Morecambe Community Rail Partnership (LMCRP) recently made an innovative bid to Northern s (Arriva Rail North s) Seed Corn Fund and has been successful in obtaining funds to develop the Bentham Line as a centre of excellence in the understanding of how community rail can help those people living with dementia, their carers and their supporters, enabling enhanced visit packages and a more positive experience for all involved. One main aim of the project is, along with our partner organisations (including Alzheimer s Research UK) to develop an innovative rail travel and destination toolkit for groups whose members have additional needs. The eventual aim will be to ensure this toolkit is transferable to other lines and train operating companies across the North and around the UK. The Penistone Line Partnership is very supportive of this project and is keen to understand how we can make train journeys easier for those living with dementia. The Kirklees Dementia Café has recently been involved with our Huddersfield Station Project. Please come along and help us to keep your stations an integral part of our community. There are lots of opportunities to get involved, if you would like to help please contact Rowena. We look forward to seeing you on the train! Neil and Rowena

Educating the passengers of the future Over the past few months we have continued to work with local schools and uniformed organisations (The Scout Movement and The Girl Guiding Association). Not only do the children learn how to behave safely on the railway, but are encouraged to interact with us through demonstrations and question and answer sessions. In addition, we specifically cover the size, weight and speed of trains, and the correct way to use level crossings. Earlier in the year Rowena visited South Crosland Junior School and led a session on STEM (Science, Technology and Maths) which focused on railways. The children had great fun constructing bridges, viaducts and tunnels from a variety of different materials, including lolly sticks, spaghetti, marshmallows and liquorice allsorts! Needless to say they also enjoyed consuming a few at the end of the session. The children learnt about different roles within the railway in which technology is used, and later visited Huddersfield Station. Scholes Infant and Junior School went on a trip to visit the Springvale Community Garden in Penistone. Prior to their trip Rowena visited the school to talk to them about staying safe on the railway. The children all had a great time, both on the train, and at Springvale garden where they tasted lots of different fruit and vegetables that were new to them, they planted some seeds, and did a trail within the garden. Penistone Line Partnership and Springvale Community Garden are hoping to put together a join education resource to encourage schools to use the Penistone Line to visit the site. Although the majority of our education work is concentrated at primary level, we were pleased to install our art work at Penistone that student Sarah Laurel worked hard on with the children from Busy Bees Nursery, and of course it was nice to see the children at the station again. We look forward to taking them on a trip again soon. We have also begun talks with Honley High School on how we can get involved with the transition from primary to secondary school. Honley Station is well used by school pupils, and we want to ensure that the pupils are behaving responsibly at the station. If you would like to book a talk, presentation or trip along the line to Springvale Community Garden, please Rowena at penistone@gmail.com

Love Your Local Station One of our main initiatives is to involve the local community in its local station. We are steadily increasing the amount of activities at stations but of course are always keen to engage with more people. If you would like to see some changes at your local station and would like to really welcome people to your village/town please let us know. We are now working with three local Rotary Clubs to make improvements at local stations (at Lockwood, Honley, Stocksmoor and Denby Dale) and are about to start working with a new group at Shepley. You may well have noticed some of the work that has happened at Huddersfield Station; we are steadily trying to improve the aesthetics of Platform 2, and welcome passengers to the Penistone Line. Local artist Beverley Addy has worked with a variety of community groups through the Yorkshire Children s Centre; they went out on the train and the planters that have been created (thanks to volunteers at Huddersfield Men s Shed) represent what they felt the train ride was like and the landmarks they saw on the journey. Still to come is artwork on the waiting shelter, on which Student Sarah Laurel has been working in conjunction with the Huddersfield Men s Shed volunteers, and a bookcase made by Beverley Addy which will go in the shelter and we hope encourage people to share books, magazines etc. If you have any books you would like to share with others, please donate them. We aim to have a range of books which will entertain both the young and old whilst waiting for the train! There are new planters ready to go in at Penistone Station too! Thanks to funding from Penistone Ward Alliance, some of the pupils at Penistone Grammar School have designed and made some planters to go at the station. These will be planted up by Springvale Community Garden, and we look forward to seeing them on the platform soon! Penistone Station has also seen a few changes at the rear of the station building, where the volunteers from the Trans Pennine Trail Conservation Volunteers and scouts have made terrific progress with the wild flower meadow project. The majority of the self- seeded trees have now been removed, creating lots of homes (habitation piles) for the wildlife in the area! Look out for when the next work day is and come along; they are always posted on our facebook page. URBAN RAMBLINGS Local publisher RJ Nicholls of Denby Dale has commissioned poet Ian McMillan and linescape artist Mark Richards to write Urban Ramblings, a pair of large-format books on the Penistone Line. The first volume, featuring the nine stations from Huddersfield to Penistone, will extol the delight and pleasure the two authors feel as they travel on the Pacer train and then alight at each station to explore with a keen eye for detail. The books are not guides but set out to reveal the authors elation and love of people and places. The first volume will be published at the end of September and Volume 2 from Penistone Sheffield will be prepared next year

Left and Below: Pupils from Penistone Grammar School have been putting the finishing touches to the planters they have designed and constructed. The planters will be filled by Springvale Community Garden volunteers who have grown the plants. Below left: Members of Huddersfield s Men s Shed have been busy constructing and installing planters, which will be filled by Totties Garden Centre, on Platform 2 at Huddersfield. If you have green fingers and would like to help at a station or indeed get a project off the ground please get in touch. Opposite and Below: A couple of Mark Richards excellent line drawings of the kind which will illustrate Urban Ramblings: Lockwood station and (below) Lockwood Viaduct from Beaumont Park.

Support to Recovery Support to Recovery (S2R) are very excited to be partnering up with the Penistone Line Partnership. Who are we? S2R is a Huddersfield based charity serving all of Kirklees. We promote positive mental health by providing a safe place and a range of creative and interesting activities. This brings people together so that they can pursue their interests and learn new skills in the company of others. Who is it for? Everyone! We work with all adults in Kirklees because this is about us all making time to look after our wellbeing and keeping ourselves in good mental health - after all, people don t just go to the gym when they feel unfit! What sort of things do we do? We help people in three ways: Creativity and the Gallery - We stage creative activities and have an art gallery to show case work; Well-being, Mindfulness and Meditation- We give people strategies that lead them to feel more mentally, physically and emotionally well; The Great Outdoors - We help people to make the best of the outside environment as a resourse for the mind and body. What are we doing with the Penistone line Partnership? The Great Outdoors Project aims to make people feel at home in their environment but often we struggle to get participants out to all the fantastic countryside around Kirklees. By working with the Penistone line Partnership we can visit some of these places and benefit from the fantastic surroundings. Then we can tell you about what we learn. Look out for some short walks in the future! First stop will be Wednesday 7 June when we visit Spring Vale Community Garden to look at their medicinal plants. How can I get involved with S2R Check out our website for activities, sign up to our facebook or drop in and see us here at S2R create Space.
