2 feature event Classy Mouse Racing at Bylong By Sophie Fitzgerald On Saturday the 23 March, the barriers will rise and the crowds will cheer as the Bylong community celebrate their 25th annual Bylong Mouse Races. The prestigious event brings people from far and wide to the beautiful village, inviting you, your family and friends to enjoy the fun-filled day. With plenty to see and do, the annual event has raised $450,000 since the inception, with all proceeds distributed to charities and causes throughout the local area. Gates open at 10am at the Bylong Sports Ground with entry at $5 per person and free for children under the age of twelve. From 11am, the races begin and continue throughout the day in ten heats before the Bylong Cup at 5pm. Alongside the rodent relays are a number of activities and facilities to please all. Children will be satisfied by a kid s tent operating all day with body and face art, lucky dip, show bags, Pooka the Clown s Magic Show and a jumping castle. Other activities include Calcutta, a mechanical bull, helicopter rides and best dressed competitions with categories including group, women s, men s, children and funniest. There are also full bar and barbeque facilities for all, strictly no brought alcohol or cats. In 2008 the unique affair was named the Community Event of the Year at the Mid Western Council Australia Day Awards and has certainly lived up to that since. The collaborative initiative will be water themed this year, said to be making a splash. 4 creative arts Murrurundi Food and Wine Day Set to Tickle the Tastebuds By Laura Sykes If fine wine and mouth-watering food is your forte then get excited for Murrurundi Food and Wine day, to be held on Friday 5 April. The event will be hosted by Michael Reid, well-known local author and art dealer, among the picturesque grounds of his gallery and gardens. Also impressive are the names on the guest speaker list. The gastronomic triumvirate is made up of writer and seasoned food media personality Sue Fairlie- Cunninghame, urbane and much travelled providore, Simon Johnson and Colin Selwood, chef at Graze Restaurant, with its reputation as a leading NSW country restaurant will be put to the test at the informal dinner following the events of the day. 5 creative arts Romantic Comedy at Scone Films With Love is All You Need Oscar-winning Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier has made a sparkling romantic comedy, but not of the usual formulaic Hollywood type. Ida (Trine Dyrholm), is recovering from cancer; she s lost her hair and her breasts and, it seems, her husband, when she discovers him with another woman. Philip (Pierce Brosnan), is a brooding widower, cold and business-focused. The two meet in an unfortunate way at the airport on their way to Italy. Neither is aware that they are both heading to the same place - the wedding of their respective children. Things between the two future in-laws start out a bit testy. Set on the picture postcard Amalfi coast of Italy, two very different families are brought together for the wedding in a beautiful old villa surrounded by lemon groves. When the young couple s future happiness is jeopardised, the two future in-laws are brought together to try and set things right. Love is All You Need is an enchanting and delightful story about happiness and discovering that it s never to late to have a second chance. Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre Celebrates International Women s Day Friday March 8 was International Women s Day and as part of the Upper Hunter s celebrations the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre hosted a talk by Dr Angela Philp, Head of Art History and Theory with the School of Creative Arts at the University of Newcastle. Angela discussed the history of Aboriginal women s art and its importance in the resurgence of Aboriginal cultural traditions and their practice in the remote communities of central Australia giving a wonderful insight into the background and meaning of the artwork in the exhibition Strong Women, Strong Painting, Strong Culture. 6 food & wine Delights by Telarney It s an art of taste, colour and design but for Muswellbrook s Telarney Rowe creating cupcakes is a challenge and a passion she embraces with enthusiasm. Telarney is the owner and creative flair behind Delights by Telarney who specialises in handmade cakes, cupcakes and cakepops. The young woman started baking cakes about fifteen months ago when she was inspired by some beautiful cakes to bake a cake for her husband s birthday and she has been receiving orders ever since. A self-taught cake decorator and home cake decorating entrepreneur, Telarney has tried and tested a large variety of cakes and cupcakes to fine tune her own recipes in her aim for perfection. With a genuine passion for cooking savoury dinners such as casseroles, stir-frys, roasts and stews, the local aspiring master chef says it s all about patience, persistence and experimentation. Cake decorating is not an easy art; it takes many hours to create a beautiful cake. You need a lot of patience and a steady hand, Telarney said. You will never stop learning in cake decorating, there is always a new skill to learn so you will never get bored and each and every creation is a new accomplishment. Cakes should always be pre-ordered as the preparation and cooking time differs for individual recipes and designs. Each order can take up to three or four days to prepare, for example a tiered wedding cake will take four days, a novelty 3D cake will take three days and a birthday cake should be ordered two to three days in advance. Depending on the quantity required, cupcakes generally take one day to bake and decorate. 9 the equine trend & more Scone Race Club Announce 2013 Programme Australia s richest country carnival is growing in status and prize money with three new listed races and one new restricted listed race. These changes will offer an extra twelve horses to be able to walk away with black type after the carnival which is of considerable value to the breeding industry. Prize money in three listed races on the programme has also risen. These changes tie in well with the tag line of the Club where the racing and breeding industries meet. Scone is famous for its title of Australia s horse capital and some of the Southern Hemisphere s greatest thoroughbred nurseries are located in its environs. These studs have shown their support for the carnival with breeding and racing luminaries Emirates Park, Coolmore, Arrowfield and Darley being major sponsors along with long term auctioneer house Inglis. 10 leisure & lifestyle Calling all Catchment Champions Nominations are now open for the 2013 Champions of the Catchments awards. The awards, run by the Hunter-Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority (CMA) and Hunter Region Landcare Network Inc (HRLN), aim to recognise groups and individuals with a passion for sustainable natural resource management and environmental conservation. The award applies to any group within the region that provides care and management for land and water resources, including landcare, bushcare, coastcare, marine care groups and others. CMA General Manager Ms Fiona Marshall says, These awards, held every two years, provide a great opportunity for people to share their ideas and projects that have helped improve the health of the Hunter- Central Rivers Catchments. Lots of people Plashett Homestead, Jerry s Plains in our area are doing great things, but unfortunately we often don t hear about the work being done and give people a pat on the back for their achievements. This will be the fourth time the competition has been run, with categories and criteria kept the same as the State Landcare Awards, allowing groups and individuals to enter both. There will also be $500 in prize money awarded for each of the nine categories. With nearly five hundred landcare groups existing in the region, everyone is encouraged to get involved and nominate or apply. Applications are now open and close Friday 12 April. By Laura Sykes IMAGE: Ruth Hardy Chairman of Hunter Region Landcare Network Anglo American Metallurgical Coal is providing a unique opportunity for the community to inspect Plashett Homestead at Jerry s Plains on Sunday 14 April 2013 between 10am and 3pm. The Plashett property was first settled by James Robertson in His son Sir John Robertson became 5 times Prime Minister pre-federation and was famous for the Robertson Land Act. In 1865 the property was acquired by the Pearse family who constructed the homestead which today is listed on the Muswellbrook Shire Council LEP. Plashett Homestead is a single story ashlar sandstone building in a simplified Victorian Regency style which has been built in a number of phases and is currently undergoing further restoration work. The Homestead also has a large cellar, underground water tank, hot water copper tank and extensive garden which once included a tennis court. The homestead is currently undergoing a programme of restoration which will see it return too much of its previous glory. The history of the property has recently been recorded in the book People, Property, Power, Plashett Jerry s Plains by well known Hunter Regional historian, Cynthia Hunter. 11 leisure & lifestyle Preconception Care - When and Where to Begin? Are you and your partner making plans to have a baby? The preconception period is an important window of opportunity to ensure you have all of the nutrients required not only to conceive, but also to nourish the growing foetus, and ultimately deliver the healthiest baby possible. Preconception care should ideally begin at least three to four months prior to trying to conceive, allowing adequate preparation time for both parents to achieve optimal health. It Takes Two, Baby! Although it takes two to make a baby, the preconception spotlight all too often falls solely on the mother-to-be. The reality is, however, that men have more than just a small part to play in creating a healthy baby. So for the best possible outcome, both partners must be included in preconception care. Quite often, recommendations will include changes that a couple can make together, including: Detoxification Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet Participate in regular physical activity: Regular physical activity Stress less. For the Mum-To-Be As well as couple-based strategies, there are also gender specific recommendations when it comes to supporting healthy fertility. For the mum-to-be, a number of natural supplements may be recommended during both preconception and pregnancy. A few of these are listed below: Essential vitamins and minerals: During pregnancy, a woman s body has additional requirements for many vitamins and minerals, including folate, iodine, calcium, vitamin D, selenium and iron. These crucial nutrients have specific roles in supporting a healthy pregnancy, as well as normal brain and bone development in the growing foetus. Your Practitioner can recommend a comprehensive, high-quality pregnancy formula to ensure you are getting all the nutrients you need at the correct doses during this important time. Fish oil: Omega-3 essential fatty acids from fish oils support many aspects of health, including a healthy pregnancy. DHA, an active ingredient naturally occurring in fish oil, is vital for the baby s brain and nervous system development. The three piece band, consisting of Greg Piggott, Rich Manevski and Mick Bendeich are known particularly for their gigs at venues in and around Newcastle, The Hunter Valley and the North Coast.
