2 WELCOME Welcome Welcome to our 2018/19 collection of battlefield tours. As we move into the final year of the centenary of the end of WW1 our head guide Paul Reed has created a selection of special anniversary event tours plus new tours covering some of the major final campaign battles. We also have an expanded collection of WW2 tours some of which cover historical events around the end of the war and the aftermath of the Cold War. Further afield we are pleased to introduce a brand new Vietnam tour covering the harrowing events of that long campaign. Ian Henry, Chief Executive, Leger Holidays Inspirational journeys of Remembrance and Discovery Villy La Ferté 1940 Visiting battlefields from the two World Wars remains a fascinating, rewarding and moving experience. A century after WW1 and some 75 years since WW2, the debt we owe to those generations remains strong and the legacy of Remembrance they have left us prompts many who travel on our Battlefield Tours to ask more: who is the solider in that faded photo at home? What was that name on the local war memorial? What did grandad do, and how did his war fit into the bigger picture? Auschwitz-Birkenau These are just the sort of questions myself and my team of dedicated Specialist Battlefield Guides (see page 6) get asked on a typical Leger Battlefield Tour. We are there to help you decipher all the military jargon and understand a past that touched us all so that we, too, can continue with the legacy and ensure the sacrifice and service are never forgotten marks another special period of anniversaries for the First World War, as it will be the centenary of the end of the war. These were some of the biggest, bloodiest battles of the war and many have become not only household names, but come to symbolise the war itself in some ways. The Battle of Passchendaele is a good example of this: think of this battle and one imagines a lunar landscape of water-filled shell holes on a rain soaked landscape. Battlefield Tours teach us that the experience of war like this was about ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances: that these men and women who served saw the best and worst of life as carnage raged around them, and it was an experience that changed them forever. On Battlefield Tours we discover that freedom is never free and the huge cemeteries bring that home in a way that is only possible on such a tour. The UK Foreign Office publishes regularly updated travel information on a range of subjects including safety and security in all holiday destinations on its website which you are strongly recommended to check before booking and in good time before departure. ABTA and ABTA members help holidaymakers to get the most from their travel and assist them when things do not go according to plan. We are obliged to maintain a high standard of service to you by ABTA s Code of Conduct. For further information about ABTA, the Code of Conduct and the arbitration scheme available to you if you have a complaint (details in our full Booking Conditions), contact ABTA at 30 Park Street, London, SE1 9EQ or see British citizens require a British passport in order to travel to the destinations we feature. This usually takes approximately 3 to 6 weeks to obtain but can take longer. If you are 16 or over and haven t held a passport previously, you need to allow at least 6 weeks and should not book your holiday until you have received your passport. Current visa and compulsory health requirements (if any) for British citizens with a British passport are shown on our websites. Requirements may change. In the event of any flight delay or cancellation at your UK or overseas point of departure, the airline is responsible for providing such assistance as is legally required by EC Regulation 261/2004, where applicable. The ferry, tunnel, cruise or rail operator is similarly responsible in relation to any delayed or cancelled sea crossing or international cruise or rail departure. For other delays, please see our Booking Conditions for details of the extra services we aim to provide subject to availability and the prevailing circumstances. Our holidays may be subject to a minimum number of bookings in order to operate. For all holidays, the deadline for deciding if sufficient passengers have booked to travel for the tour to operate, is the date by which full payment of the holiday must be made. In the event that minimum numbers have not been reached, we reserve the right to cancel your holiday and refund all monies paid. You re on your way... When it comes to getting your holiday started, it couldn t be simpler. Along with a great range of holidays, we ve also got a selection of travel options for you to choose from. Just decide whichever way suits you best and let us take care of the rest... Convenient coach joining points For your convenience and comfort we offer hundreds of joining points across England, Scotland and Wales. And to make sure your journey to the interchange is as direct as possible, we guarantee there will be a maximum of five stops to pick up other guests. The five pick up point guarantee starts after your main pick up point, excluding comfort stops, service areas, motorway junction points and trunk road pick up points. Stay overnight near Dover and park for FREE Why not go the night before your holiday for a relaxing start? You can park for FREE for up to nine days at the Holiday Inn Ashford North and enjoy an overnight stay with English breakfast from just 39 per person. This offer is subject to availability and based on two sharing a twin/double room on a B&B basis*. We ll then collect you from the hotel on the day of departure and return you there at the end of your holiday. To book this package, please call the hotel on , quoting Leger Holidays and your booking reference. If your holiday is longer than nine days you can pay for additional days parking. Ask one of our friendly reservations team for more details when you book your holiday. Door-to-Door service On Single Traveller holidays and coach holidays of 7 days duration or more, you don t even have to think about getting to your local joining point. If you live within 20 miles of one of our free joining points we ll pick you up from your home and take you to meet your transfer vehicle, then return you back home at the end of your holiday. The cost is from just 35 per booking each way for up to four people per booking. Most Door to Door journeys are not exclusive to a single holiday booking. Each door to door vehicle will carry no more than eight passengers, allowing luggage room and space and minimalising the number of additional stops before meeting the coach. If you live a little further afield, you can also take advantage of this convenient option for an additional charge please enquire at the time of booking. Transfer service Our transfer service takes you to meet your Luxuria, Silver Service or Executive tour coach, where your holiday can really begin. We also operate our transfer service to return you to your drop off point, in the same, efficient manner, once your holiday has finished. The transport we provide to take you to and from the interchange may include Executive, Silver Service or Luxuria coaches, as well as minibus, National Express, Megabus, or, where circumstances require, taxi or train. Occasionally, on shorter journeys, your transfer vehicle may not have toilets, reclining seats or drinks facilities. Our transfer service may be operated by one driver only and is designed to get you to and from your meeting and drop off point as efficiently as possible. At the interchange At the interchange, our trained team takes your luggage from the transfer vehicle to the main tour coach whilst you use the refreshment areas. Then you board your tour coach and travel to Dover or Folkestone, where your coach drives onto the ferry or Eurotunnel train respectively. Join your tour coach at the interchange On most holidays if you d prefer to join your tour coach at Stop 24 services, you can park your car in the car park which is accredited by the Park Mark safer parking scheme and is monitored 24 hours a day by CCTV. Payment for the parking is made on arrival using the self-service machines. Comfortable coach travel We want to make sure your journey is as comfortable as possible, and all our tour coaches are equipped with airconditioning, on-board toilet and reclining seats. Seats are allocated on your main tour coach, and for a small supplement, you can guarantee front or second row seats on your tour coach or, if you prefer to sit a bit further back, choose our central view seats (subject to availability, please call or see our website for full details). For extra luxury and extra legroom you can upgrade to Silver Service which also features added benefits such as comfortable rear lounge and porterage at your hotels, or Luxuria which offers even more personal space and at-seat interactive touch screen televisions. See page 5 for full details. Crossing the Channel For most continental holidays we use the short sea crossings from Dover to Calais or Eurotunnel from Folkestone to Calais. Our reservations staff can advise you which route applies for your preferred travel date. Fly & Tour holidays All of our Fly & Tour holidays are operated by Leger Air Holidays Ltd and are ATOL protected, giving you peace of mind as you travel. *Single supplements and terms and conditions apply. Excludes holidays to Ireland and the U.K. and tours travelling via Brittany Ferries. Channel crossings are subject to change, you will be advised with your travel documents. 54 Call or visit for full details
