61 58 TABLE 6. STANDARD METROPOLITAN STATISTICAL AREAS. There can be, of course, many concepts of a Greater of Metropolitan Area as fit the needs of the businessman, economist, geographer, political scientist, researcher, sociologist, etc. A Metropolitan Area may be defined as that area surrounding a commercial-industrial center which is so economically, politically and socially intergrated that it presents itself as a unified area. This, admittedly, is a loose definition, since the definition of an area depends strongly upon how much weight is given to the items of criteria included within the three () factors; economic, political and social. The United States Bureau of Management and Budget in order to give standardization of metropolitan concepts defined S.M.S.A.'s mainly on two () items of criteria on April 7, 97..) Municipalities must have a density or population of 00 persons per square mi le and.) the percentage of the employed workers living in a city or town and working in the central city (or cities) and vice versa.
