Find out more about the Isle of Man at: MANX ELECTRIC RAILWAY If you want to explore the north of the Island, do so in Victorian style by taking a charming electric tramcar. The 17.5 mile route from to hugs the Island s east coast, passing through gorse topped hills, glorious Victorian glens and spectacular coastal scenery. North by Electric OPERATING DATES: 9 MARCH - 3 NOVEMBER SNAEFELL MOUNTAIN RAILWAY Alight at station to change to the Snaefell Mountain Railway - a unique Victorian enterprise. Begun in 1895 and famously completed in just seven months, the railway winds from village to the summit of Snaefell, the Island s only mountain, where breathtaking views await. Mountain Railway It is said that from here, you can see Seven Kingdoms - Mann, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Heaven and Neptune s Realm. OPERATING DATES: 27 MARCH - 31 OCTOBER EXPLORE WITH HERITAGE RAILWAYS Ancient peoples, historic conquests and turbulent fortunes have all helped to forge the Isle of Man as we know it, and travelling on our heritage railways is the ideal way to soak up this fascinating history. Start by taking the steam train south to Castle Rushen - one of the best preserved medieval castles in Europe. Close to the castle, visitors can enjoy an interactive sitting at the Old House of Keys, or stroll along to The Nautical Museum, which provides a fine introduction to the Island s maritime heritage. A few miles away at Cregneash, visitors can discover how Manx crofters once lived. Meanwhile the Island s industrial past unfolds in at the foot of our most famous landmark of all: The Great Wheel. Accessible via the Manx Electric Railway, it is easy to explore the mining heritage at along with the delightful beach and harbour at Old. Many other heritage sites - such as s Milntown House and The Grove Museum of Victorian Life - are also easily reached by tram. Whilst not exploring with the Island s railways, why not hop on a bus from any of the main stations and discover more amazing places? Iconic Peel Castle, the windswept Viking stronghold on St Patrick s Isle, is an absolute must and, whilst in Peel, be sure to make time for the award-winning House of Manannan museum. ISLE OF MAN STEAM RAILWAY Dating back to 1873 the Steam Railway, which runs 15¾ miles from to Port Erin, is arguably the oldest narrow-gauge railway in continuous operation in the British Isles. The railway still uses the original locomotives and rolling stock. South by Steam Rocking gently through beautiful countryside watching the train s breath drift by, is a timeless experience for rail enthusiasts and visitors of all ages. OPERATING DATES: 14 FEBRUARY - 5 NOVEMBER ISLE OF MAN RAILWAY MUSEUM A must for all visitors while in Port Erin is the Island s Railway Museum which houses a fine collection of locomotives, rolling stock, railway memorabilia, posters, handbills and interpretive displays. 3 STATION FACILITIES SUMMIT DINING MANX ELECTRIC RAILWAY The Mines Tavern is located next to the Manx Electric Railway Station, a few steps from the Rose Gardens in the centre of the village. The Tavern is a traditional Manx pub serving local beers and good home cooked food. Check for daily specials and snacks. Yummy Cakes! OPEN: YEAR ROUND SNAEFELL MOUNTAIN RAILWAY Spectacularly located at the highest point on the Island, the Snaefell Café and Restaurant is open for the duration of the Snaefell Railway s operating season. The Café provides a range of hot and cold food and boasts superb views across the whole Island and beyond. OPEN: 27 MARCH - 31 OCTOBER ISLE OF MAN STEAM RAILWAY The Steam Railway offers delicious treats and meals at each end of the line. Inside Railway Station we have The Tickethall, serving unique fireman s breakfasts, buffet lunch, homemade cakes and refreshments and weekend Supper Clubs. At Port Erin station, refreshments including gluten free options are available from the Whistlestop Café. SUNSET DINNERS Our popular Sunset Dinners at the Restaurant offer a selection of delicious menu choices - everything from roast meats, hearty stews and soups, to fresh seafood and locally sourced fruit and vegetables. So relax, raise a glass and drink in the stunning views from the highest point on the Isle of Man. A unique dining experience to really savour! SEVEN KINGDOMS LUNCH Snaefell Restaurant also offers a great Sunday lunch menu. Let the tram take you to the top to enjoy breathtaking views, from the only place in the British Isles, where you can see the Seven Kingdoms of Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales, Mann, Neptune and Heaven. 5 PLAN YOUR DAY OUT... NORTH BY ELECTRIC The Derby Castle terminus is at the northern end of Promenade and is served by the Horse Tramway and frequent bus services that also connect with the steam railway station. As well as offering some very pleasant walks, Groudle Glen - just a short hop north - is home to the lovingly restored Groudle Glen Railway which runs through the glen and out to the coast. Alight at for the Mines Trail which includes the Great Wheel and the fascinating Great Mine Railway. Station is also the starting point for the unique Snaefell Mountain Railway. Bay North of, the tram stops at Dhoon Glen, Glen Mona, Ballaglass and Cornaa; all are ideal for exploring the footpaths, glens and peaceful beaches along the coast. Further on, Ballajora, Dreemskerry, Lewaigue and Belle Vue provide the most convenient stops for exploring Maughold Church, the rugged coastline around Maughold Head and the quiet beaches at Port Mooar and Port Lewaigue. At the north end of the line is with its impressive boating lake at Mooragh Park. There is good shopping in the narrow streets near the harbour with numerous independent retailers, plus a good selection of cafés, restaurants, tearooms and pubs. On the outskirts of town can be found two more of s famous attractions - The Grove Museum of Victorian Life and Milntown House. SOUTH BY STEAM Station can be found at the bottom end of Harbour. From here it s just a short trip to Port Soderick and Santon - ideal stops for exploring the dramatic coastline south of the capital. The ancient monastery of Rushen Abbey is found at Ballasalla and a leisurely stroll along the river brings you to Silverdale Glen with its café, boating lake and children s play area. Further along the line at Castletown you will find four unique heritage sites; Castle Rushen, the Nautical Museum, the Old Grammar School and the Old House of Keys. Nearby there are shops, pubs and restaurants to visit. At the end of the line you will find Port St Mary and Port Erin. With their sandy beaches, sheltered harbours, cafés and activities, both villages have become favourite destinations for families. 9 OTHER RAILWAYS TO EXPLORE THE GREAT LAXEY MINE RAILWAY The Great Mine Railway offers a fascinating glimpse into the Island s industrial past. The line is found in the Valley Gardens just a short walk from Station and trains run every few minutes from 11.00am to 4.30pm. GROUDLE GLEN RAILWAY & SEA LION ROCKS TEA ROOMS Just a few miles north of, and easily accessible via the Manx Electric Railway, is the Groudle Glen Railway - a Victorian tourist attraction lovingly restored for modern-day visitors. DOUGLAS BOROUGH COUNCIL HORSE TRAMS Founded in 1876, the Bay Tramway is one of the world s oldest surviving horse tram services and still uses its original rolling stock. An ideal way to travel between the Isle of Man Steam and Manx Electric Railways.
