2 ABOUTTHE FRONTENACARCHBIOSPHERE The Frontenac Arch Biosphere (FAB) is one of 18 UNESCO World Biosphere Reserves in Canada, among 669 in 120 countries regions that are exceptionally rich in nature and culture. Biospheres protect such places through sustainable community development. The Frontenac Arch is a geological bridge from the Canadian Shield to the Adirondack Mountains, and is the ancient backbone of North America. The sinewy windswept, pinetopped ridges and lake-jeweled valleys is a rugged and quintessential Canadian landscape. A billion years ago, this was a dramatic landscape of towering mountains, heaved skyward as early continental plates collided. The countryside you experience today is these ancient mountains, weathered down to their roots. Ice-age glaciers bulldozed the basins for the Great Lakes. The lakes gradually filled to overflowing, spilling one into the next. But the massive Frontenac Arch was a barrier to the flow of the last Great Lake, Lake Ontario. The brimming waters rose up the western slope of the Frontenac Arch, finally pouring through valleys between the granite hilltops. Thousands of hilltops, the roots of the ancient mountains, became the Thousand Islands. A thousand more islands grace a thousand more smaller lakes, inland. The Frontenac Arch Biosphere is a natural and cultural crossroads of the continent. Here the natural migration routes of the north-south Frontenac Arch and east-west St. Lawrence River Valley intersect. Five forest regions merge here, for a great diversity of plant and animal communities. The Frontenac Arch connects the Canadian Shield boreal forest to the forests of the Adirondack and Appalachian Mountains. The St. Lawrence River Valley connects the Great Lakes forest to the forests of the Atlantic Coast. These natural migration paths were also trade routes for First Nations peoples since the last ice age. Archaeological sites reveal copper knives from the far north, shells from the southern coasts, and stone for projectile points from further west and inland. To First Nations, the Frontenac Arch is The Bones of the Mother. 3 BUIDLING A SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY ACCESSIBLE WILDNESS UNESCO World Biosphere Reserves help protect globally significant natural regions, not through fences and boundaries, but through sustainable community development. Thank you for coming. In visiting the Frontenac Arch Biosphere you ll not only see one of the most beautiful places on earth, you ll be able to support the sustainable businesses and communities of this region. FAB celebrates its heritage, helps protect biodiversity and helps reduce and adapt to climate change. Sustainability balances environment, economy, society and culture. It s at the heart of all of our programs. Canadian UNESCO Biospheres are non-governmental, non-profit organizations. And you can play a part get involved, buy local and volunteer. FAB Experiences is the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Network s sustainable tourism program, designed to share the celebration of life, land, and our community s sense of place our local food, arts, trails, heritage and conservation programs. Geotourism is sustainable tourism with a sense of place. We are signatories to the National Geographic Society s Geotourism Charter. FAB Local Flavours:. 2 Connect to local food producers, restaurants and food outlets healthy eating, a local food identity, best practices and nourishing the local economy. One of the great joys of living in the Frontenac Arch Biosphere is lying in bed listening to loons laughing on the lake, to geese winging their way north when the sap is running and back south when the leaves are turning, to coyotes yipping and howling (hoping they haven t just consumed the neighbour s pet). Here, we can walk, snowshoe, ski, bike, paddle or just idle along in natural places that seem as nurturing and restorative as wild lands much farther afield. And yet, they are close to home. The wildness here is accessible. And by wildness I like my friend David Gessner s definition: It s not just a place, he writes, it s a feeling. It rises up when you least expect it. That s the FAB magic, right here close to home. James Raffan story and photo by James Raffin FAB Arts: 6 Meet the creative community, and celebrating the wealth of life, land and heritage through inspired eyes, hands and voices. 5 FAB FRONTENACS Looking at a map, Frontenac is a long, narrow county with four townships. The City of Kingston is sandwiched between the township of Wolfe Island and Howe Island in the south, and South, Central and North Frontenac Townships going north. The County of Frontenac is very progressive, embracing sustainable community development. Residents enjoy a rural lifestyle, living and working in one of the most naturally beautiful parts of our province yet not far from major urban centres and major markets in both Canada and the U.S. The two hour drive from one end of Frontenac County to the other is a rewarding experience and a beautiful journey. The County slogan, Naturally Frontenacs, couldn t say it better. A south-to-north tour of the county is a terrific cross-section of the Frontenac Arch Biosphere s natural environments, communities, rural countryside and culture. The Township of Frontenac Islands, Wolfe and Howe, are short and pleasant ferry rides, year round, from the mainland. Wolfe Island is the largest and western-most of the Thousand Islands. Its fertile fields are a gently rolling landscape over limestone bedrock, buckled over time as the Frontenac Arch pushed upwards from below. The ancient granites of the Arch are exposed at Wolfe s eastern end. Much of the island is fertile farmland, scattered woods and sweeping grassy swales. The western shore dips gently into the lake, wind and wave swept a feeling of openness, soft and warm in summer; an icy chill in winter. At Marysville, the Wolfe Island ferry terminus, visit shops and the bakery and perhaps tour across the west end of the island by bicycle. Ride past turbines generating green electricity in the lake-fresh air on the way to the Big Sandy Bay Conservation Area. South Frontenac is a transition from limestone plains to the Frontenac Arch granites, farmland giving way to expansive woodlands, bedrock cliffs, wetlands and lakes. It has the county s largest population, communities clustered at cross-roads. Sydenham, Verona, Harrowsmith, Battersea, Inverary, and Perth Road Village are vibrant communities. Frontenac Provincial Park, a very special wilderness place, attracts visitors the world over. Northward and into Central Frontenac, villages nestle in valleys where streams tumble over ledges. This water-power drove early mills around which communities formed. Roads meander around hills and lakes, and there s a cottage-country feeling. The major villages of Central Frontenac are Sharbot Lake, Parham, Arden, Tichborne, Godfrey, and Mountain Grove. The intersection of highways 38 and 7 is a hub for area trade and markets. North Frontenac is the largest of the Townships. Communities, including Ompah and Plevna, are mainly found along the 509, 506 and 41 highway corridors. Development in the northern section of the County relates to natural resources, logging and mining. The County of Frontenac had great forsight in making the abandoned K&P (Kingston and Pembrooke) rail line into a mulit-use 40 KM trail. Find it on our large map in the centre of the book, at FABExperiences.ca TRAILS or FrontenacCounty.ca. VISIT AN AMAZING PLACE A half-billion years ago, a school bus-sized meteor slammed into the planet near today s village of Holleford. Nearly two KM across, the crater is still faintly visible today, even after being filled with sandstone and limestone from ancient seas, after several ice ages, and with weathering and forests and farming. The impact was massive and far-reaching. It created an earthquake along a fault line across the top of Frontenac Provincial Park, northeastward towards Ottawa, and as land to the south side of the fault dropped away, created the basins for the series of Rideau Lakes. Just outside the village of Westport you ll find the Foley Mountain Conservation Area, part of the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority. It offers one of the premier viewpoints and vistas of this celebrated region Spy Rock. The land to the south of the fault dropped about Holleford Meteor Crater seen from Space the best overall 100 metres, creating the abrupt, high cliff and the basins view. Look for the sign on the road. The property is private. for the lakes. From this cliff-edge granite ledge, you can see across the quaint village of Westport, southeast across the Frontenac Arch. How this dramatic cliff came to be is a fascinating chapter in the geological story of this region. See more at visitamazingplaces.ca 8 9

10 FAB KINGSTON Kingston is Ontario s oldest city, but it s definitely young at heart. It s the western gateway to the Frontenac Arch Biosphere, boasting both the world-famous Thousand Islands and south half of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Rideau Canal. It s a city where great waterways meet: the emerald blue-greens of Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River and the Cataraqui River. Kingston is one of the most sustainable and best places to live in the country. You will never run out of things to experience. The magic of Kingston is sights, sounds, tastes and texture the whisper of sails, the crashing of waves, the sound of a cannon from high on a hill, and the rumble of a trolley crossing cobblestone streets. It is in the colour of unique storefronts, the visual feast in galleries and the creative pace of world-class institutions of learning. It is to savour in restaurants with remarkable tastes of the FAB and County landscapes, and market days where flavour bursts from local vendors stalls. Here, in one of Canada s most outstanding cities the heartbeat of history merges with the sophistication of the future. Kingston is an important culture and learning centre, on the threshold of the unique ecology and geology of the Frontenac Arch Biosphere. Kingston s expanded to include the countryside of former surrounding townships and is a workplace for hundreds of rural residents. Waters from the lakes and streams of the Biosphere flow from and through the city; people flow from the city to enjoy the parks and waterways of the Biosphere. Restaurants celebrate tastes of the Biosphere countryside, and the landscape and its story inspires the arts community. Performances at theatres, galleries and art workshops the inspiration from the rich tapestry of community and countryside at every turn. This southwest corner of our region invites your modern-day exploration. Trace the story of Canada through many museums, Fort Henry National Historic Site, the lower sections of the Rideau Canal, city hall s historic role as Canadian parliament s first site, and the Kingston home of Sir John A. Macdonald, our first Prime Minister, at Belleview House National Historic Site. And that s just a start. There is every reason you can think of to stay, and experience the area. Kingston and the Frontenac Arch Biosphere region are fabulously intertwined. Water Water plays a big part in the stories and life of Kingston and the Frontenac Arch Biosphere. 30% of the FAB region is wet with hundreds of lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands. This breezy east end of Lake Ontario is a sailor s mecca, and was chosen to host sailing events in the 1976 summer Olympic Games. Watercraft have plied the FAB region for thousands of years. The Thousand Islands were summer hunting and fishing grounds for First Nations people, for perhaps as long as 9,000 years. Today s paddlers following the streams and rivers of the Cataraqui and Gananoque systems trace waterway routes deep into the interior of Canada. Water meant power the control over it for nations, from First Nations to contests over it in the nationbuilding story of Canada and the U.S. today. Water power was vital in settling the region, with falls and rapids harnessed at mills to the cut lumber and grind grain and run early manufacturing. Water means life. The Frontenac Arch Biosphere is one of the most biologically rich regions of Canada. In a climate moderated greatly by Lake Ontario, wetlands, lakes, rivers and streams and their vital edges and shores are the cradles and ribbons of life for literally thousands of plants and animals, from microscopic to macro, all with roles and relationships that animate and colour this astonishing, vibrant landscape. 19

19 FAB SOUTH FAB South runs from Gananoque to Mallorytown along the St Lawrence River, and north from Seeley s Bay across to Athens. It s chock full of fabulous experiences and sparkles with lake and river gems including The Thousand Islands, Charleston Lake, Red Horse Lake, the Beverly Lakes, and Gananoque Lake and River. Naturally speaking, there s a lot to explore. Thousand Islands National Park, a hiker s favourite on the mainland and a boater s and paddler s paradise through the length of the Thousand Islands, is one of Canada s oldest national parks, a showcase of this renowned environment. Charleston Lake Provincial Park naturally compliments its name-sake lake, the jewel of Ontario lakes. The Marble Rock Conservation Area trail is a delightful, challenging ramble through granite ridges and woodland-sheltered valleys. These parks and conserved areas host the incredible wildlife and forest diversity that make the Biosphere a uniquely rich environment. History here is something to boast about. The village of Lyndhurst, originally Furnace Falls, was the site of Upper Canada s first iron foundry, and here today you can walk and drive across Ontario s oldest stone bridge. Seeley s Bay is a vibrant community and key port on the Rideau Canal. Lansdowne hosts one of Canada s oldest country fairs each July. Mallorytown was the site of Canada s first glassworks, and its Mallory Coach House is a showcase of local history. Rockport is a lively village on the St. Lawrence, with some of the world s best freshwater diving, and a busy port for tour boats. Gananoque, with many hotels, B&Bs and restaurants that feature Local Flavours food, is a great jumping-off point to explore the Frontenac Arch Biosphere. It was a dynamic town right from the start, where Loyalist settlers utilized the waterfalls where the Gananoque River tumbles into the St. Lawrence. The falls powered mills and factories that built tools, fishing lures, and others that then transitioned from wagons to auto parts. At the same time, Gananoque was a hub for the surrounding farm community. But even from early days its fame has been its idyllic place as gateway to the Thousand Islands. Explore history at the Arthur Child Museum and the new Antique Boat Museum at the waterfront. Walk the town s heritage paths, where history unfolds at every step. For 34 years the Thousand Islands Playhouse in Gananoque has been the premier live theatre destination and a cultural leader in the Frontenac/Thousand Islands Region. The theatre excels in professional productions and Canadian works. On the Gananoque waterfront with panoramic river and island views from a two-tiered deck, it s a favourite for travelers and locals alike. Built in 1909 as the town s canoe club, and harvesting solar energy from rooftop panels, the Playhouse is both quaintly picturesque and dynamically current. Boaters can dock in front of the theatre and walk to take their seats. The theatre, located along the network of walking and cycling trails, is easy driving from Toronto and Ottawa. The Playhouse welcomed almost 50,000 visitors in It will present 10 shows in 2016, with nine productions, and a Young Company touring show its biggest season yet! Half Moon Bay, an Amazing Place For the past 128 years, Half Moon Bay has been a place of worship with the highest cathedral roof in the world. As a bay on the south side of Bostwick Island, there is of course no roof at all open to the heavens, as it were. The bay s name comes from its crescent shape, a curve like that of the new moon. The bay is a small fiord a glacier-carved inlet where the billion-year-old granite cliff is rounded and polished. The steep slopes of the north shore are richly forested with a tapestry of shady, overhanging basswoods, maples, ash and hemlock trees a canopy over a small level place on the shore, just large enough for the pulpit of this unique chapel. The pews are boats, gathering in front of the pulpit. Before the appointed afternoon hour arrives, boaters idle and paddle into the bay, bow and stern lines are traded from runabout to rowboat. A thin iron rod, bolted into the rock, bends along the sheer cliff of the bayside opposite the pulpit, where boaters loop lines. The pulpit is a rough granite block, sited on a green-painted cement pad at the water s edge. A pianist, and sometimes a choir, share the space. It s a casual affair various denominations taking turns throughout the July and August services. (Pictured on the cover) See more at visitamazingplaces.ca/frontenac-arch 36 37

30 FAB NORTH Jones Falls an Amazing Place All 27 lock stations on the Rideau Canal National Historic Site are uniquely picturesque, but a hands-down favourite is Jones Falls. It s perhaps the most extraordinary construction works of the canal and a remarkable feat of engineering in Few places on Earth have both a UNESCO World Biosphere and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here in FAB North, both are very clearly interwoven. Central to this landscape is the Rideau Canal, both a National Historic Site, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which courses through this part of the UNESCO Frontenac Arch Biosphere. This is a magnificent area of lakes and streams, historical landmarks and village communities both quaint and vibrant all in some fashion connected to the Rideau Canal. It is a region to be slowly savoured while driving, but perhaps best seen from a bicycle seat, from boats large or small, and on foot. It is a region that is endlessly rewarding to explore. The Rideau Canal was a military venture, built nearly two centuries ago. It bypassed the vulnerable upper the St. Lawrence River and the border with the U.S., connecting Kingston to Ottawa, and then down the Ottawa River to Montreal. The canal was a safe and defensible passage for travellers and cargo in British control. It was soon obsolete with the now longstanding treaties between nations, but remained vital to carry timber and lumber, grain, produce, and products to growing communities. Thanks to Parks Canada, almost all locks are their original construction, an ideal candidate for its UNESCO designation, and an tremendously authentic experience for visitors today. Some 57 lakes are part of the waterway system that collectively feed into the canal. The historic village of Newboro is literally the high point of the system, where waters flow either south to Lake Ontario, or northwards to the Ottawa River. The picture-perfect Chaffeys, Davis and Jones Falls lock stations, whether you arrive by boat, bike or car, are destinations where it s hard not to linger. Westport, at the top end of Upper Rideau Lake, bustles with shops, local art, music events and great local food. Visit the Chamber of Commerce s info office on Spring Street downtown for local information. Portland, a jumping-off point for lake cottagers, and visiting boaters, celebrates winter with a major speed-skating event, Skate the Lake. Delta, with the remarkable Old Stone Mill National Historic Site, is another must-see historic village in Rideau Lakes Township. Wendy s Country Market The good news for British engineer Colonel John By was that landowner Charles Jones of Brockville had not settled the site. The bad news was the 1.6 KM of rapids roaring 17 metres from Sand Lake into Whitefish Lake, then a broad, marshy, fetid and gloomy swamp, home to a veritable mist of mosquitoes. A major dam was needed to back up Sand Lake as a reservoir - at 18 M high and 66 M across the top, the highest dam on the continent at the time. Suitable stone for the locks and dam was quarried eight km. away at Elgin, rough hewn and dragged on winter sleds by oxen to Jones Falls. Masons had to warm the stone blocks before shaping them so that they wouldn t crack in the cold. It took four locks in two flights to step up from Whitefish to Sand Lake. Locks 2 and 3 of the lower flight have lifts of 4.5 M lifts then considered dangerously high. The lower lock lifts 4 M and the top lock 4.6 M. A turning basin sits in the confined space between the flights of locks. The dam and locks were actually built in dry conditions, with water from Sand Lake bypassed in channels. The Sweeney house, named for the first lockmaster, was a defensible stone house built in 1841, restored to original in the 1970s. West of the upper lock is a blacksmith s shop, built in 1843 to make and repair small ironworks for Jones Falls and other locks. A 1930s frame store house near the lower locks has interpretive displays. From atop the dam, see the massive wooden barrel-like tubes from the 1930s that still turn electric turbines. And, stop for a meal at the Kenney Hotel, quaint reminder of summers spent on the waterway. opposite: Spy Rock, Westport upper & middle: Jones Falls Locks lower: Upper Brewers Locks See more at visitamazingplaces.ca/frontenac-arch frontenacarchbiosphere.ca

35 FAB EAST The eastern flanks of the Frontenac Arch transition from the rugged granites of the Canadian Shield, to rolling and tranquil rural countryside, steeped in Loyalist settlers history. The southern edge has a strong river connection and focus. The towns northward formed around the construction and heritage of the canal, and today evolve with the growth of Ottawa. But communities of food producers, artists, history and nature know no boundaries. Towns, villages, countryside and services, products and produce, arts, entertainment all aspects of community life are interwined. Brockville Railway Tunnel Merrickville The City of Brockville is the largest community in this Guide section. It lies at the east edge of the Thousand Islands, straddling the divide of ancient granite and younger sandstone bedrocks. It s a centre of manufacturing, law and innovation. Visit the new, amazing Aquatarium to interact with the story of The River. Prescott, just downriver, was a key point in river shipping history, where in pre-seaway decades small boats that skirted river rapids loaded onto larger ships that could sail upriver and onto Lake Ontario. Fort Wellington, a major British post from the War of , recreates a pivotal era of Canadian history. Picturesque Merrickville s heritage and story is well preserved in its fabulously rich architecture. Merrickville is exceptionally popular among visitors who stroll quaint streets, absorbing canal and village history, dipping into intriguing shops to nab finds. Meander across the countryside along the Rideau Canal from Kemptville to Merrickville to Smiths Falls and experience unique lock stations on the way. Smiths Falls is a centre for rural areas both south and north. While the falls and canal were the foundations of the town, it thrived as a crossroads of canal and rail lines both highlights of excellent museums.
