4 MESSAGE FROM THE BOWLS TASMANIA PRESIDENT Welcome to the bowls season. Another season is here and I should like to take this opportunity to thank my predecessor Garry Beven for his five years as President of Bowls Tasmania. He worked tirelessly for the association and I have big shoes to fill. We also said goodbye at our AGM to Max Amos and we thank him for his service, especially to the Juniors. We welcome to the Board Graham Hay, Liz Rickards and Margaret Cornish, who join Dee Harman, Nick Lee, Bob Clifton and myself. We are here to represent all bowlers in Tasmania, not just our specific regions, and we shall use our best endeavours to do just that. I should like to congratulate our new Life Member Pat Bennett. Pat is a past President of Bowls Tasmania and has given many years of service to the association, especially with respect to IT. I thank our sponsors and corporate partners, including the Tasmanian Government, WIN TV, Apia, BCiB, Henselite and City Club, and urge all bowlers to support those who support us. I also acknowledge the contribution made by our volunteers and thank them for it. We cannot continue to enjoy our sport without you. I should also like to acknowledge the efforts of our Regional Bowls Manager Simon Morrison, who is busy visiting schools and clubs in order to increase participation. If your club has any problems they would like to discuss then please contact Simon. He is there to help you. I also thank David Genford for his wonderful reports on our website and Facebook page during events, including the Commonwealth Games. The new Bowls Tasmania Strategic Plan will be launched in the New Year. It will be closely aligned to the Bowls Unleashed Strategic Plan of Bowls Australia. Work is continuing on an attempt to produce one set of Conditions of Play for the whole state to cover Saturday pennant. Our State representatives have continued to perform well and competitively against their mainland rivals. Our Men s Open team regained the French Holbrook trophy against Victoria and finished third in the Australian Sides Championships in Darwin, a mighty effort from such a small state. Our Juniors won the recent test against Victoria, and came home with medals from the National Championships, as did our participants in the National Disability Championships. Lee Schraner and Rebecca Van Asch both currently sit at number two in the BA player rankings. Congratulations to them both. Lee won the gold medal in the Australian Champion of Champion men s singles and now goes on to contest the World Champion of Champions. I wish him luck and good bowling. Our CEO Rebecca Van Asch has had an absolutely stellar year, with achievements including two Commonwealth Games gold medals and winning the Australian Open and Australian Indoor titles. These achievements have generated invaluable publicity for our sport. Congratulations Bec and I wish you and Alex the best of luck as you move into a new phase of your life, being parents. Finally I wish you all good bowling and good luck for the season. Please be respectful of each other and treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. That way we can all enjoy our bowls.
