February 25, 2016 HEADLINES New Format Click to see the articles you want to see Thank you Scott Evesque s widow extends heartfelt gratitude FERC We now have a voting member on the FERC Negotiating Round Table Pilots from many carriers meet to discuss strategies Training Conference ALPA pilots meet with the FAA Accident Investigation Committee met in Herndon for training Welcome Class 04-16! Jumpseat Update CASS, KCM, MyIdTravel and more New Format We have changed the format of the Weekly Update to list the latest headlines at the top of each publication. This will enable readers to get a quick overview of the articles in the update listed by links to take you directly to the topics you want to see first. A Thank You from Scott Evesque s Widow Scott Evesque s widow, Celia Evesque has expressed her deepest heartfelt gratitude to all the pilots of JetBlue. The outpouring of support from our pilot group has given her a sense of ease during these difficult times. The overwhelming kindness shown to her by Jetblue crew members, the CIRP Committee, and those Jetblue Pilots who attended the memorial
service in uniform proved to Ceila why Scott was so excited to be part of the Jetblue Family. If you would still like to contribute to Scott s YouCaring fund, go to Voting Member on the FERC When a fatigue call is made, the Fatigue Event Review Committee (FERC) reviews the circumstances to decide if the pilot will be pay protected. Until recently, our CASC had a representative on this committee but not a vote. We are pleased to announce that this member will now have a voice and a vote for each case reviewed by the FERC. Negotiations Round Table Last week, MEC Chairman Jim Bigham and Negotiator Nate Hoyt joined union members of other carriers in a Negotiating Round Table in Toronto, Canada. ALPA carriers participating included United, Delta, FedEx, Virgin America, Frontier, and Air Canada. Representatives from the American Pilots Association (APA) and the Southwest Pilots Association (SWAPA) were also on hand to discuss their current work on collective bargaining agreements.
The different groups shared successful strategies and ideas on improving pattern bargaining. Retirement and Insurance was discussed heavily, along with ways to maximize our abilities at the table in this favorable economic environment. The meeting resulted in new and enhanced strategies and tactics that will not only help each individual carrier, but enhance the bargaining power over the whole industry. Training with the FAA Our Training Chairman Todd Lisak spent several days at the FAA Center in Oklahoma City for the semi-annual ALPA National Training Council Meeting. Representatives from the other carriers attended along with training management; although JetBlue did not send anyone from the OSC. The emphasis was upset recovery training, and the FAA facility is the only place that has two simulators certified for a full aerodynamic stall. The FAA will continue its emphasis on proper upset recovery. They have issued a new mandate that all simulator devices be configured to replicate how the actual aircraft would respond in a full aerodynamic stall. Pilots may recall from recent training that the new emphasis during a stall event is to lower the nose. A number of industry stall event accidents, recently Air France, drove this change. The FAA will require carriers to complete training of their aircrews by You can expect to see this in our initial qualification training as well as recurrent in the near future. Accident Investigation Committee in Herndon
Top row L-R Marshall Ekstrand, Rob West, Rick Ross, Scott Johnson, Mark Bird. Bottom row L-R Tommy Barone, James Wright, Dan Yankle, & Shannon Forrest (not pictured) The JetBlue ALPA Accident Investigation Committee met in Herndon this week for three days of training. Nine members of the JetBlue pilot group attended, and were very impressed with the structure, resources, and training ALPA provides for its membership. They now have a much better understanding of how to integrate the skills and experience our committee members bring to an investigation with the knowledge and expertise ALPA is able to provide. We are also pleased to inform the membership that the committee members were willing and able to attend training on their own time. If you pass a committee member in the crew room or in the terminal, please thank them for their service to our pilot group. The Accident Investigation Committee looks forward to completing additional training in April to further their knowledge and continue to learn about the support and resources that ALPA provides for its members. Welcome Class of 04-16!
We would like to welcome the newest members of our proud pilot group, the class of 04-16! The class had 16 members from various backgrounds in the industry. Please look for them and congratulate them when they join us online! Back row L-R Jason Hilbert, Ian Tate, Szymon Harasim, Brandon Kuchmecki, Gregory Page, Todd Severance, Joseph Titone, Bradley Benson, Ken Hamann Front Row L-R Spencer Lowe, Timothy Kent, Erik Johnson, Robert Jarrard, Frank Roberto, Ashley Vliet, Diane Powell MyIDTravel, CASS, & KCM Over the last few months, we have experienced intermittent outages of myidtravel. Typically, the duration of these outages has been short; however, this can still create issues if you have waited until the last minute to list for a JetBlue or AA flight. Pilots wishing to travel on JetBlue can also list for the jumpseat at the gate in accordance with the SOM and FOM, should they be unable to list in advance. If the agent is unfamiliar with creating jumpseat listings, a cheatsheet document exists that walks them step-by-step through the process. A link labeled pass riding processes on the CASS tool page of HelloJetBlue features a document with all necessary instructions for jumpseat listing. This procedure applies to both online and offline pilots. In the case of AA, the non-rev phone number (WE-FLY-AA) still may be used to create jumpseat listings. In addition, the APA Jumpseat Committee has assured
us that jumpseat listings can and should be created at the gate if for some reason the pilot was unable to do so in advance. CASS and KCM have also experienced their share of outages recently. While KCM merely creates an inconvenience for pilots, CASS being down can greatly affect one s ability to commute. In the case of United Airlines, it may prevent you from being allowed on the aircraft even in a cabin seat. United s policy dictates that any pilot who comes up denied in CASS will not be allowed to ride on that aircraft, even in a cabin seat. In theory, the gate agent is supposed to be able to differentiate between CASS being down and an individual pilot being denied. In reality, we have seen some of our pilots denied boarding even in cabin seats on United during CASS outages. Your committee has expressed our displeasure with this policy to the UAL committee, as we do not believe CASS should be used to prevent a pilot from occupying a seat in the back. AA Commuting Difficulties We have been informed of numerous pilots being denied boarding of AA flights departing CLT (and DFW to a lesser extent) due to weight and balance issues. Favorable fuel prices in certain hubs for AA have led them to tanker fuel on many flights right up to the maximum landing weight. This weight is sometimes calculated without any regard for non revenue passengers or commuting pilots. The APA Jumpseat Committee is aware of the situation and is attempting educate their pilots on the difficulties being faced by many jumpseaters out of the affected cities. If you find yourself facing this issue, please be patient and request to speak with the captain. The captain may have the ability to adjust the fuel load as necessary to ensure all jumpseaters are accommodated. If you are left behind due to weight and balance on a mainline AA aircraft, please fill out a jumpseat PDR so that we may assist the APA Jumpseat Committee in tracking and hopefully resolving this issue. Another frustrating issue being experienced by some of our AA commuters is the practice of checking jumpseater bags. In some instances, agents preemptively check jumpseater roller boards before the overhead bin space is full, with the only option being to have it delivered at baggage claim at the destination. This practice is unfortunately in line with AA policy; however, you are more likely to experience it at one of the original AA hubs (ORD, DFW, MIA, JFK) than one of the old US Airways hubs (CLT, PHL, PHX). Again, if you encounter a situation in which you are told you must check your bag to baggage claim, please follow instructions and be patient. Once you board the aircraft, introduce yourself to the captain, he may be able to assist in getting your bag in the aircraft cabin or at the very least checked to the arriving gate instead of baggage claim. PDRs
Your PDRs continue to be very helpful to the Jumpseat Committee and our MEC as a whole to track and resolve many types of issues. Please continue to take the time to fill out these reports anytime you have issues that you wish to bring to your committee s attention. General questions can be directed to your Jumpseat Committee at JBUJumpseat@alpa.org. Please share your ALPA correspondence with your spouse or loved ones. We re all in this together!
