2 Memphis 100 Air Race October 18, 2008 RACE OVERVIEW : The event will stage at Gen. Dewitt Spain Airport (M01) in Memphis, TN. The participants must attend the mandantory briefing at 8:00AM(central time) on Saturday, October 27 th. If you do not attend the briefing, you will not be allowed to fly in the event. After the briefing, the participants will take off at the designated time and in the order given during the briefing. Pilots will make an approach to the start line and fly over the pre-determined point. The pilot s time will start when the aircraft passes over the predetermined point, not on takeoff. The participants will then proceed directly to turn point 1. After reaching turn point 1, the pilots will proceed to turn point 2 and then to the finish at M01. En route: During the event, all FAR's, waiver special provisions, and event rules must be observed. Finish: The finish line will be at M01. The airport is on the Memphis sectional. The airport has one paved runway, After crossing the finish line the participants will proceed to the briefed cool down area (if desired). When ready to land, participants will announce their intentions on CTAF, enter the traffic pattern and land using standard traffic pattern procedures. Timing: The race will be timed by Official Race Judges. The race will be judged at the starting line, turn points, and the finish line at M01. The judges will use the atomic clocks on the GPS satellites at all locations to ensure accuracy. The start and turn point times will be transmitted to the race judges at the finish line and then confirmed by phone. The race times and speeds can then be computed as soon as the airplane crosses the finish line. The original hard copy of the times will be brought to the finish line by the race officials and will serve as verification. Race Scoring: The event is a timed race, therefore the aircraft with the shortest time is the overall winner. Also, the aircraft with the shortest time in each category will be the winner of that category.
3 Memphis 100 Air Race October 18, 2008 RACE RULES: 1) All FARs will be followed. None of the following rules takes the place of the pilot in command s responsibility to adhere to the FARs, follow guidance in the AIM and Advisory Circulars, and act in a responsible manner. (The only exception will be to the those pilots listed on an FAA Waiver, and then only to the specific provisions listed on the waiver.) 2) No temporary fuel tanks in passenger compartment will be allowed. Fuel requirements will be VFR or IFR minimums. 3) The Starting Line is in a remote location from the departure airport. All participants will pass over the start line on course for the first turn point. All participants will over fly over a series of turn points along the racecourse. See the racecourse details for this information. Failure to do so will result in disqualification. Turn points will be marked at a pre-designated point on the airport. The aircraft must pass over the designated point at an altitude 1000 feet. Aircraft are required to establish communication with the turn point observer on the briefed frequency no less than 2 miles from the turnpoint. Example: Turn 1, Race 51 is two miles out. 4) Cutting a turn point at either the start or finish will result in a 15-minute time penalty. 5) All pilots must show credentials to event officials at Gen. Dewitt Spain Airport (M01) prior to participating in the event. The credentials required are: a) Pilot Certificate with appropriate ratings and endorsements for the aircraft flown. b) Current Medical Certificate c) Current flight review 6) In addition to pilot credentials, participants will be required to show the following documents for their aircraft. The documents required are: a) Airworthiness Certificate b) Registration. If not flown by the owner, written permission from the owner is also required. c) Current annual inspection or condition inspection sign-off (photocopy is ok) d) Other inspections required by FARs must be complied with. e) Contest officials at the check-in will verify theses documents before the event. 7) All participants must attend the pre-race briefing. The main Pre-Race Briefing will be held on Saturday morning.
4 8) All aircraft participating in the event will be required to display race numbers in a color that contrasts the aircraft's paint. Race numbers will be displayed on both sides of the fuselage and under the left wing. Race numbers will be no smaller than 18 inches and must be visible to the race officials on the ground. Race numbers must be applied to the aircraft no later than 7:30 a.m. (EST), the day of the event. Aircraft that are too small to display 18 inch numbers on the fuselage need to contact the contest chairman at least two weeks prior to the event to make other arrangements. 9) Weather at the starting line must meet at least VFR minimums. Weather related decisions in regards to the start of the event will be at the discretion of the contest committee. In the event of poor weather the event will be delayed. 10) The weather must meet VFR minimums over the entire course. Pilots must maintain VFR cloud clearances and weather minimums at all times. If conditions become less than VFR after leaving M01, participants should discontinue the course, and land as soon as practical at the nearest safe airport. 11) In the event of a participant returning to M01 after the start of the Race, the participant may be allowed to restart the race, at the discretion of the contest committee. 12) The finish line is located at M01. Participants will over-fly the runway from North to South, above 1000 feet MSL. Upon confirmation by the finish line timer on the radio on the briefed frequency, turn west clear of the traffic pattern. Proceed to the briefed cool down area, if required. When ready to land, announce your intentions on CTAF and make a normal pattern entry for landing. The airport (M01) will remain open for the entire event; there may well be the other traffic operating in the landing pattern. 13) The contest committee reserves the right to change the race course as needed in the name of safety. In the event of a change in the event, all participants will be briefed accordingly.
