1 UK Census Online, Sunday, searching in Norfolk and for wherrymen, & etc. Please read before starting Ed A from to Abbreviations ag lab = agricultural labourer aob = alone on board app = apprentice b-i-l = brother-in-law bn = born in dau = daughter d-i-l = daughter-in-law emp = employing f. = former f-i-l = father-in-law gd- = grand- gen = general GY = Great Yarmouth ind = independent means jmn = journeyman lab = labourer ma = mother mar = married m-i-l = mother-in-law Nch = no occ = no occupation pa = father sch = at school son-i-l = son-in-law sis-i-l = sister-in-law sp- = step- Su = unk = unknown unm = unmarried wid = widow(er) (?) = some doubt here (35) = age, for disambiguation [ ] = editorial comment or correction { } = as information appears in the digitised index 'ukcensusonline.com General Many wherries could have been on passage or moored well away from the routes of enumerators as they also could have been when each Household's form was distributed in the days prior to census night and collected afterwards. Wherry names are sometimes recorded. Very rarely a wherryman will appear twice on the same census, usually because his wife included him when filling in the form at home, and he filled it in himself while on a wherry at a quay somewhere else. Answers (rare) to the question 'Whether blind or deaf and dumb' are included in the '' column. No 'wherrymen' were noted in and married couples aboard are rare. In Institutions like Lunatic Asylums, and Castle Gaol, inmates / prisoners are recorded only by their initials, so they are listed at the beginning of their initial surname letter. Occupations Robert Simper says, in Norfolk Rivers and Harbours (1996), 'In recent times the crew of a wherry have been called skipper and mate, but the old practice was to call them wherryman and waterman.' Here they are sometimes called waterman but also wherryman's assistant, mate, man, boy etc. The search terms 'waterman', 'boatman', etc are not proof of connection with wherries, but have been included where place of residence, family name etc might indicate it. I suspect 'waterman' covers a multitude of sins. I have ignored those living in King's Lynn, Downham Market, Ipswich etc, but included those in parishes along the River Blyth. Where a son is shown as following his father as a waterman etc, but both were at home or on board on census night, I have made separate entries for each.. Generally there is no occupation given for wives but I have included one where given. I suspect waterman's wife was a pretty full-time job. Lightermen in Yarmouth could be working for the Trinity Brethren [Trinity House]. Boatmen on the coast could be working for the Coast Guard or shown as working at sea. In all cases I have only omitted them if it is clear they are not wherrymen. Each 'water man' has been entered as 'waterman'; each 'boat wright' as 'boatwright etc (ie no gap), & etc. 'Boatman (pleasure)' - these are not included if in Yarmouth as they are probably not pleasure wherry skippers but more likely to be taking trippers to Scroby Sands or something. 'Sail maker' - these are not included if in Yarmouth, Gorleston, Lowestoft, Southwold, Orford as they are more likely to be for sea-going vessels. Ages Noted by enumerator as given. Mistakes Handwriting was different in 1871, varied enormously from one enumerator to another, and is often difficult to read. There were mistakes made transfering information from the household forms (destroyed after being copied) to the enumerators' forms (available on line); there were many mistakes made in indexing for the digitised version, and there are sure to have been mistakes made by me, both reading and tyyping. Corrections and omissions please to alan@quanting.co.uk Thanks if you do. All Barcham, Borcham, Bircham and Burcham family names I have entered as Bircham. Beware Brackenbury, Brakebury and Brakenbury.

2 Relationships For those reading this in the distant future there were only 2 genders recognised at this time. Address For information about staithes and parishes see note at bottom of '1841 On boats' document. All places mentioned in the table below were in Norfolk at the time unless otherwise stated. Southtown was added to Yarmouth in 1681, Gorleston to Norfolk in 1835, though some addresses in 1871 indicated, and the border was moved south to add Fritton, Belton, Burgh Castle and Hopton in Parishes along the River Blyth are indicated * in the Abode column. All Great Yarmouth addresses are in St Nicholas parish unless shown otherwise. For excellent detail on Norfolk pubs see norfolkpubs.co.uk 'Living with parents' in column may include a step-parent. Beware! Terms and villages searched in Norfolk and wherry, wherryman, wherry man, waterman, water man, lighter, lighterman, boatman, crew, boat owner, barge, bargeman, lighterman, lighter man, sail maker, on the river, & etc. Please do not take this list as exhaustive or infallible.
