The site to be used for SARA rocket flying during 2012 is the Fairlie Moor Rocket Site (FMRS), courtesy of Mr. and Mrs. Fergie of Knockendon Farm, upon whose land the FMRS is kindly accommodated. This is the site that we have used annually since The details of the site are: - Knockendon Farm, Fairlie Moor, DALRY, Ayrshire, KA24 5HU. * [ * All enquiries or other communications about rocket flying at this site should be directed to John Bonsor, SARA Secretary & Co-ordinator (full contact details as above).] Lat: 55 deg. 43 mins. N NS Long: 4 deg. 48 mins W Elevation: 820 Feet (250 Metres) AMSL. Site radius = 2 nautical miles. The Altitude Ceiling at the FMRS is 16,000 Feet (4,876 Metres) Above Mean Sea Level (AMSL), subject to NOTAM arrangements with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), and Launch Windows arranged with and through Glasgow Air Traffic Control (see Note 2 on page 3 below). This maximum Altitude Ceiling is being requested for all SARA Rocket Flying Meetings in 2012 in our NOTAM application to the CAA. Cont d.. 1

2 Schedule of SARA rocket flying dates for Roll Over Dates = back-up days for rocket flying in cases where weather conditions (or possibly other circumstances) prevent flying on the corresponding (immediately previous) Prime Dates. This is to maximise the opportunities to accomplish rocket flying at the FMRS in the course of the year. NOTAM Flying Hours for the February to March dates, below = 13.00Hrs to 17.00Hrs GMT/UT, i.e. same as Local Time = 1pm to 5pm. Month Prime Date Roll Over Date April Saturday 7 th For the rest of April, and for May, there will be no rocket flying at the FMRS, due to the Lambing Season at Knockendon Farm. Arrangements to possibly use alternative sites at Auldcraigoch Farm near Dalmellington, South Ayrshire, or Binks Farm, near Hawick, in Roxburghshire, will be discussed, and announced nearer the time. 3 Notes: - 1. Rockets to be flown in the 2012 SARA programme: - a) Model flight vehicles powered by ¼ and ½ A Class rocket motors (0.00 to 1.25 Newton-seconds), and A to M Class rocket motors (1.25 t0 10,240 Newtonseconds) Total Impulse range, i.e. Model Rockets (CAA classification Small Rockets up to Newton-seconds Total Impulse) and High Power Rockets (CAA classification Small Rockets exceeding Newton-seconds and up to 10,240 Newton-seconds Total Impulse). b) Large Rockets (CAA classification). i.e. flight vehicles powered by a rocket motor or combination of rocket motors exceeding 10,240 Newton-seconds Total Impulse. Large Rockets shall only be flown under separate special Permission(s) and NOTAM(s) issued after application to the CAA, and in full compliance with the UKRA Large Rocket Scheme. Note on rocket motors: That is those motors on the IRW 2010 Approved Motor List, which extends into 2012, and is in force until further notice. This list identifies motors that are legal for sale and use in the UK, i.e. Health & Safety Executive classified, and CE marked where appropriate. The motors on this list therefore may be sold and flown in the UK, under BMFA insurance, subject to the flyer having the appropriate level of UKRA certification (Level 1, 2 & 3) where necessary, and valid Explosives Licence and RCA as required by law, depending on the motor or motors in question. If you do not have a copy of this List, one can be provided. If you have a question about a motor not on this list please enquire to the SARA Secretary & Coordinator, or to the UKRA Safety & Technical Committee. c) Water rockets, a.k.a. Aquajets, powered by internal air pressure generating a propulsive water jet. 2. All rocket launch activities at the Fairlie Moor Rocket Site will be conducted under NOTAM arrangements with the CAA, and with the usual procedure on flying days of mobile phone liaison (by the Launch Control Officer or the Range Safety Officer) with the Glasgow Air Traffic Control (GATC) Duty Watch Manager (DWM) for Launch Windows. For rocket flights between altitudes of 3,000 Feet (914 Metres) and 6,000 Feet (1,829 Metres) AMSL the GATC DWM is to be contacted. For rocket flights above 6,000 Feet (1,829 Metres) and up to our maximum altitude ceiling of 16,000 Feet (4,876 Metres) AMSL the GATC DWM is to be contacted and the DWM will arrange such Launch Windows for us with the Scottish Airways Supervisor (at the Prestwick Centre). Flights below and up to 3,000 Feet (914 Metres) AMSL can normally be flown in an Open Window (as agreed on each flying day with GATC), unless Runway 05 is in use at Glasgow Airport in which case the Open Window will be capped at 2,000 Feet (609 Metres) AMSL, and from which altitude the particular Launch Window requests specified above will then start. The GATC DWM also notifies Prestwick Airport ATC of our activities at the FMRS. 3. GATC, and thereby the Scottish Airways Supervisor and Prestwick Airport ATC, will be informed by phone call of our decision to proceed, or not to proceed with rocket flying as dictated by the weather (or other circumstances), on the morning of each Prime Date, or the corresponding Roll Over Date if it is in use. 4. The Scottish Aeronautics & Rocketry Association is Affiliated to the United Kingdom Rocketry Association (UKRA), and to the British Model Flying Association (BMFA). Our Affiliation with the BMFA gives SARA as a Club, Civil/Public Liability Insurance (and also Employers Liability Insurance). Individual SARA Members Third Party Civil Liability Insurance is provided through their individual UKRA Membership, which includes BMFA Membership, through which their individual insurance cover is provided. 3

4 Notes, cont d:- 5. The Fairlie Moor Rocket Site (FMRS) is a UKRA Registered Launch Site. 6. All SARA rocket flying activity at the FMRS, or at any other site, is conducted in compliance with the UKRA Safety Code 7. It is hoped that the full programme of dates as scheduled above can be flown, subject to NOTAM arrangements, and the weather. Go/No Go messages for each Rocket Flying Meeting date, primarily decided by the weather forecast, will be sent out in the preceding 48 hours by to all SARA Members and through the UKRA web site to other UK rocket flyers.
