What is predic<ve analy<cs? Area of stabsbcal analysis that deals with extracbng informabon from data and using it to predict trends and behavior pauerns. UBlizes a variety of techniques from stabsbcs, modeling, machine learning, and data mining. Applied to any type of unknown whether it be in the past, present or future. Accuracy and usability of results depend greatly on the level of data analysis and the quality of assumpbons. John- Paul Clarke Georgia Tech MetaCDM Workshop - ENAC, Toulouse 5
Does predic<ve analy<cs really work? Companies that systemabcally apply predicbve analybcs to operabonal decisions, especially those pertaining to customers, outperform their compebtors. - James Taylor CEO, Decision Management Solu<ons John- Paul Clarke Georgia Tech MetaCDM Workshop - ENAC, Toulouse 6
Notable Non- Avia<on Successes How did the grocery cashier know to hand you a coupon for the whole- grain cereal you will need to buy next week? Computers crunched terabytes and terabytes of historical purchasing data to determine that your favorite whole- grain cereal was missing from your shopping basket. Further, the computer matches this finding to the ongoing promobons in the store, and determines that you should receive a coupon. John- Paul Clarke Georgia Tech MetaCDM Workshop - ENAC, Toulouse 7
Notable Avia<on Successes PredicBng success of pilot trainees idenbfying best candidates and reducing training costs. 13 Predic<ng and Reducing Delays in Airport Terminals PotenBal for PredicBve AnalyBcs in Airport OperaBons
Overview of Airport Opera<ons Airports are the nodes of the air transportabon system. Capacity constraints and inefficiencies at airport entrances, parking, curbsides, security, immigrabon, customs, gates, ramps, runways are the primary drivers of congesbon and delays. Passengers sabsfacbon is in large part governed by their experience at the airport. John- Paul Clarke Georgia Tech MetaCDM Workshop - ENAC, Toulouse 14
Overview of Airport Opera<ons (cont d) Control of airport processes and procedures are distributed or shared between airlines, airport authoribes, government, and third party suppliers. No single enbty able to predict consequences of decisions and inibate remedies. CriBcal need for a mechanism to predict the likely situabon as well as the benefits / consequences of potenbal changes / decisions. John- Paul Clarke Georgia Tech MetaCDM Workshop - ENAC, Toulouse 15
What are the right ques<ons? From the passenger s viewpoint Why are there never enough ground / immigrabon / customs / check- in / security / gate personnel when I get there? John- Paul Clarke Georgia Tech MetaCDM Workshop - ENAC, Toulouse 16
What are the right ques<ons? From the provider s viewpoint Can we really improve airline and airport operabons and enhance the passenger experience by modeling and predicbng the movement of aircrab, baggage, and passengers and use our predicbons to allocabng resources (e.g. ground support equipment, staffing levels)? John- Paul Clarke Georgia Tech MetaCDM Workshop - ENAC, Toulouse 17
What is the opportunity? Reality: Airlines and airports collect a lot of data but mostly conduct retrospecbve analyses as opposed to using the data to predict what could happen and being proacbve. John- Paul Clarke Georgia Tech MetaCDM Workshop - ENAC, Toulouse 18
What is the opportunity? Hypothesis: Significant operabonal benefits could be achieved by using data to predict where and when congesbon and delay will occur and then using this informabon to re- allocate resources and mibgate potenbal congesbon and delay. John- Paul Clarke Georgia Tech MetaCDM Workshop - ENAC, Toulouse 19
Predic<ng and Reducing Delays in Airport Terminals Using PredicBve AnalyBcs to MiBgate Delay A Case Study of Sydney Airport
Case Study at Sydney Airport Scenario: Aircrab en route to Sydney but their esbmated arrival Bmes are off- schedule due to upstream factors. QuesBons: Can we predict the queue sizes and delay in immigrabon for planned staffing levels? How would these queue sizes and delay change if we changed the staffing levels? 40 Predic<ng and Reducing Delays in Airport Terminals Summary
Conclusions PredicBve AnalyBcs has been shown to be an important tool in pro- acbve decision- making. Our studies indicate that predicbve analybcs can improve airport operabons. Common predicbon of boulenecks and capability to explore effecbveness of possible remedies. John- Paul Clarke Georgia Tech MetaCDM Workshop - ENAC, Toulouse 41
Conclusions (cont d) Benefits of predicbve analybcs in opbmizing check- in, security, outbound immigrabon staffing also invesbgated. Similar benefits observed. SimulaBon framework can be easily extended. e.g. Used to predict delay 5 weeks, 1 week, 1 day prior. Certainty improves as look- ahead Bme decreases. John- Paul Clarke Georgia Tech MetaCDM Workshop - ENAC, Toulouse 42
Possible Next Steps Develop industrial strength IT infrastructure and tools to enable use of predicbve analybcs in airport operabons. InvesBgate use of predicbve analybcs in various other aspects of airport operabons: Ground support (under- wing) services; Curbside, parking, etc. John- Paul Clarke Georgia Tech MetaCDM Workshop - ENAC, Toulouse 43
