3 Bert Elam PILOT Born in 1956 in southwestern Manitoba and raised predominantly in Winnipeg. I started flying at the Winnipeg Flying Club at the age of 16. I didn t pursue a career in aviation till I turned 19, I got my commercial license and shortly after obtained my instructors rating. I taught in Winnipeg, ran a satellite school in The Pas for a year and also was the assistant CFI in Saskatoon for a brief period before Air Canada came calling. I was lucky enough to be hired by Air Canada as a DC-8 second officer based in Toronto in For a boy from the prairies being thrust into a major international airline operation it was quite the eye opener. I was able to transfer to Winnipeg in 1982 as a Boeing 727 second officer and three years later was promoted to 727 first officer. As in airline life, the harsh economic realities soon resulted in a downturn and I made a sideways move to DC-9 first officer where I stayed for the next 10 years. By 1995 needing a change of scenery and wanting to taste some more of the international side of airline flying I transferred back into Toronto as a Boeing 767 first officer. After a brief stint flying overseas, I had a minor medical issue that caused me to lose my pilots license for a period of time. They say as one door closes another one opens, during my brief hiatus from flying duties I was able to join the training department as a DC-9 ground school instructor. If you really want to learn a subject, start teaching it. Not only did this opportunity expand my aviation knowledge, but it allowed me to meet many of the new pilots that Air Canada was hiring. They were just beginning their dream job, and I hope that I had a positive influence on them. I regained my medical in 1997 and was soon promoted to DC-9 Captain and was soon accepted as a line training Captain. In 2000 I became an Airbus 320 Captain and transferred back to Winnipeg where I stayed until In 2006 it was time to give the international flying another crack and I transferred back to Toronto as a Boeing 767 Captain, where I again became a training Captain. In 2013 I upgraded to the Boeing 777 as Captain, where I finished my career this April. In 2001 I became involved with Dreams Take Flight in Winnipeg. Working with these special children really brings your life and work into focus. It highlights what a great life and job I had. It showed how many generous and caring employees Air Canada has and we have the privilege to be associated with. During my 37 year career at Air Canada there have been many highlights; being based in Winnipeg and getting a chance to fly with what I regard as some of the greatest pilots in the Air Canada system, I have served my fellow pilots as a union representative, being a training Captain and of course my involvement with Dreams Takes Flight. Being an airline pilot and being on the road a lot requires an understanding and caring family, I am married to a lovely wife and have three great children and three fantastic grand-children. A Day in the Life of a Commercial Airline Pilot by Bert Elam Everyone is interested in what a day/trip in an airline pilot s life looks like. Without sounding cliché, there is no typical trip; many factors can come into play that will alter how the trip will play out. Most pilots depending on seniority will bid on trips/routes the month prior to actually flying them. Again, depending on seniority the most desirable trips and schedules will be awarded to the most senior pilot, while those at the bottom of the aircraft type may end up working reserve, covering sick book offs, last minute cancellations or substitutions. When the schedule comes out, this is when the planning for the trip start. Most airlines have notes compiled on the destination and routes flown to, if the pilot has been on the aircraft type long enough they have probably already had a chance to review these notes and experience the airports first hand. However, if it is a new destination or first trip, they will begin just like any pilot by reviewing the notes and usually seeking out more experienced pilots that have flown in to the destination airport before. You ask about local weather conditions that may Page 3 of 10

4 prevail, ATC experience, runway conditions, local handling agency, and transportation to and from the airport and most importantly the best place to get beer and food. This research could start as soon as they know the schedule. Usually a few days prior to his anticipated trip the pilot will make sure all their manuals are up to date and ensure they have reviewed all new company bulletins. In the old days this was a time consuming process of obtaining the paper amendments inserting them into the appropriate manual and reviewing any change, this usually required a trip to the airport. Now all our manuals, bulletins and even much of our required annual recurrence study material is contained on an ipad, just requires a high speed connection. They will also about this time start monitoring the weather at both the destination and home airport to see for any possible disruptions to their planned trip. The night before the trip they will pack for the duration of the trip, could be a simple turnaround involving nothing more than an insurance bag (clean underwear and a shave kit), to a seven day trip traversing numerous climate zones. Once again, check the weather to ensure a stress free commute to work the next day or planning on extra time for inclement weather. Then off to bed for a sound sleep with visions of a stress free trip and sunny destinations dancing in their heads. Pilots are expected to arrive one hour and fifteen minutes prior to flight departure, most will arrive between an hour and half to two hours before departure. They will once again ensure all their manuals are up to date and review any new company bulletins. You will meet the rest of the flight crew, domestic and short haul 2 pilots, over 9 hours 3 pilots and over 12 hours there will be 4 pilots. They will then retrieve electronically the computer generated flight plan that includes flight routing, fuel requirements, NOTAMS and weather forecast and charts. The crew will review the flight plan looking for any significant turbulence, weather that might not follow forecast or unforecast ATC delays, review any known maintenance issues and consult with the aircraft minimum equipment list and consult with a dispatcher with specific geographic knowledge of your route. If all parties are in agreement, they will accept the flight plan (or have a new one generated) and it is off to the airplane. Once we pass through security, yes even flight crew get that wonderful experience, we board the aircraft and meet our flight attendant. On smaller aircraft you might get to meet them all at this point or on larger aircraft might not get to meet them all till much later in the flight or not even meet them till boarding the bus to the layover accommodations. The Captain will brief the In Charge flight attendant on the expected flight; including flight duration, expected turbulence, destination weather, any special concerns with aircraft equipment or serviceability, and cockpit safety and security. We then get to do a cursory inspection of the cockpit equipment and manuals including inspecting the aircraft logbooks. We must insure all required maintenance checks are completed, including aircraft walk around and/ or complete that ourselves. We must ensure that any defects have been noted and signed off as fixed or are in compliance with the minimum equipment required for the flight. We now get to take our assigned seats and as they say the fun begins. Pilots will usually be in their assigned seat thirty to forty minutes prior to departure, while each aircraft will have its own cockpit check flow there are some universal items that all aircraft do. One of the first items will be to obtain the current ATIS, this is necessary so they can decide the runway in use and runway conditions. While most of the performance data was estimated during the flight planning phase, now with the actual runway in use and conditions these numbers will be fine-tuned and possibly require a runway change or off-load of cargo. They will then program the flight management computer with the routing and performance number, and finish the cockpit checks. At this point, if it is the crew s first flight together they will review emergency drills, ensuring that everyone knows their role. Approximately 10 minutes before flight depart final load figures will be sent, this is the crews last chance to ensure they have proper fuel load for the trip. About this time also the ground crews are in their final preparation of closing up the aircraft and attaching the tow tractor if there is to be a pushback. If everything has come together from crew scheduling, aircraft routing, maintenance, passenger boarding, cargo loading and airport traffic you will now be departing on time! Page 4 of 10

5 During the pushback the first officer will start the engines, while the Captain monitors the pushback procedures. Some aircraft will leave one or more engines shut down to save fuel if they expect long taxis or delays enroute to the runway. Once the pushback has been completed, engine parameters stabilized, the crew will complete an after start checklist and release the ground crew to a safe distance. One last check to ensure you have the current ATIS and if no adverse weather requiring de-icing, or thunderstorms is present you will begin to taxi to the assigned runway. Again this is where pre-planning helps with unfamiliar airports, all crew members will have their charts out, watch for any possible runway incursions, last minute taxi route changes, hold short instructions, all while completing a before take-off checklist. Arrive at the runway with all checks complete, all engines running and cabin crew informed that take-off is imminent is a well-choreographed dance. Once on the runway the pilot flying (PF) will take the controls, Captains and First Officer will usually alternate flight legs depending on conditions. Pilots will usually decide whose leg it is prior to commencing the pre-flight cockpit checks. Once ATC clearance is received the PF will smoothly advance the throttles and begin the takeoff roll. Captain will take the throttles once thrust has been set and will keep his hand on the throttles till V1 (takeoff safety speed) is reached, should an emergency arise prior to V1 requiring an aborted takeoff the Captain is responsible for initiating the reject and subsequent emergency drill. The climb out will follow prescribed routes know as Standard Instrument Departures, with modifications added by ATC to maximize traffic flows. North America is fine but where English is not the mother tongue these modifications can sometime be interesting. All crew members will be alert and provide helpful input to the pilot flying during this phase of flight below 10,000. Once above 10,000 feet the crew will ensure the company has accurate out and off times, so that the arrival station can start planning for arrival (even if that is not for another 14 hours), complete all necessary logbook entries (all takeoff powers setting, weights, and ambient temperatures are recorded) and the flight/nav log is started. At cruise on long haul flights if there are more than 2 crew members appropriate relief periods will be established. The remaining crew will now settle into a monitoring phase where there will record fuel at established checkpoints comparing that to the required fuel on the flight log. They will make company position reports at these points as well, the dispatcher who is assigned flight following will compare these positions with his/her flight log and will do the best of hi/her ability keep the crew advised of any significant changes enroute. The dispatcher is the clearing house for all significant weather events including turbulence reports, PIREPS, NOTAMS, volcanic and seismic activities. With the advent of modern communications ACARS and SAT phone the crew is virtually never out of communication with somebody. Any maintenance issues and/or unforeseen weather encounter will also be communicated to dispatch during the cruise phase. The crew will also periodically check enroute weather, ensuring they have airport options should an in-flight or medical emergency require a diversion. They will keep track of destination and alternate weather ensuring that it remains above appropriate minimums and ensuring that the fuel on board is sufficient for any contingencies that might arise. If weather or fuel becomes an issue, in consultation with their dispatcher they will either find new alternates if possible, or decide on a diversion to a more suitable airport. All going well your destination should be in sight and plans for that well deserved rest period are playing out. Depending on the destination crews will start planning their arrival between thirty and forty minutes out. They will obtain the latest ATIS, bearing in mind local ATC procedures choose the most appropriate runway they believe will be in use and program the flight management computer with the runway and associated Standard Arrival route. This can sometimes be a real challenge as some airports have 6 runways with as many as 30 STARs, once again a little local knowledge or research goes a long way in making a successful flight. The remaining crew is recalled and the descent is begun. All works out, weather remains above minimums, no ATC emergencies, you land, find your way to your gate at a foreign airport. Once you shut down, complete all your checks, liaison with local maintenance, debrief your flight dispatcher on arrival Page 5 of 10

6 weather if there was any and say goodbye to your passengers, it is pay-off time, that prized layover destination. Depend on location, frequency of flights and other variables your layover may be as short as 10 hour minimum legal rest period to a multi-day holiday. With regard to your previous duty period and any subsequent duty you will plan your rest, hopeful get to enjoy the local cuisine, and get a little exercise in, while seeing the local sights. Plane Fun Unfortunately no one recognized the Aerotechnik L- 13 SEH VIVAT two seat glider that Peter Moodie challenged you with last month. The Aerotechnik L- 13 SEH VIVA was designed by Karel Dlouhy and is a two-seater side by side using the wings (without flaps but with airbrakes), the tail surfaces and the rear part of the famous glider fuselage LET L 13 Blanik. The central and forward fuselage were modified to accommodate a side by side cockpit covered with a molded canopy in one piece rising to the rear and an engine Walter Mikron IIIAE 60 hp resulting on a prototype propeller wood fixed pitch Hoffman.
