HISTORY Emission New aircraft emit 50% less carbon monoxide and 90% less smoke and unburned hydrocarbons than they did 50 years ago. Nitrogen oxide (NO x ) levels have also been cut, and modern aircraft now emit 40% less NO x than in Aircraft and engine manufactures are continuing to target further aircraft emission reductions, including an additional 80% cut in NO x by Standards ICAO sets standards for NO x emissions and regularly tightens these for each new generation of aircraft. However, there is still work to be done and the industry has a number of projects underway to further reduce its effects around airports. Aircraft are 50% quieter than they were 10 years ago 6 / SFCO2 Presentation IATA Airline Cost Conference August 2014
AVIATION & FUEL EFFICIENCY Fuel efficiency gains since the early jet age Airplane 40% less expensive and more fuel efficient. 48% more passengers with a 67% increase in payload, while burning 23% less fuel. Engine 1% a year, which means engines available in 2020 are likely to be at least 10% more efficient than engines designed today. Airlines They are saving fuel through more efficient procedures and weight reduction measures. These can range from ensuring the plane s engines are clean to developing and using alternative fuels. Fuel efficiency comes from new design & operational practices improvement 7 / SFCO2 Presentation IATA Airline Cost Conference August 2014
AIRLINES ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT DIRECT OPERATING COSTS Maintenance 12% $$$ Fuel 40% Direct Operating Cost Distribution Average Fuel Price ($/barrel) Fuel & Maintenance represent more than 50% of DOC 8 / SFCO2 Presentation IATA Airline Cost Conference August 2014
FUEL SAVINGS OPPORTUNITIES BREAKDOWN PER DOMAIN Flight Operations Ground procedures (pushback, taxi, takeoff, APU, etc ) Flight procedures (climb, cruise, approach, landing, etc ) Dispatch Operational Flight Plan (OFP) optimization Engineering & Maintenance Aircraft weight Aircraft performance Engine performance Commercial On-board commercial weight Commercial 10% Maintenance 15% Dispatch 40% Flight Operations 32% IATA Sources 1% to 5% potential reduction in direct operating costs 9 / SFCO2 Presentation IATA Airline Cost Conference August 2014
FUEL SAVINGS EXAMPLE Hypothesis: A320 // 2,400 kg per hour // 3,500 hours per year Annual consumption: 8,400 tons per a/c (7,560,000 $ per year) *Fuel price $0.90/kg 1% = 75,600 $ per year 0.5 mm increase in HPC blade tip clearance 1 mm increase in HPC effective CDP seal clearance 0.3 mm increase in HPT blade tip clearance 10 cm² increase in HPT inlet nozzle area 15 m of slats missing seal (span-wise) 15 mm external slat misalignment 8 m² of leading edge slat paint peel 0.3 mm of skin roughness over ~ 50 m² of fuselage or ~ 15 m² of wing ~ 2 additional taxiing time ~ 1 additional holding time at cruise level 0.01 Flight Speed deviation vs optimum speed (~5kt) 5 kts additional head wind (~9km/h) 2000 ft delta Flight Level vs optimum altitude Fine tuned actions leads to large cost savings 10 / SFCO2 Presentation IATA Airline Cost Conference August 2014
FUEL SAVINGS AT ANY PRICE? Reduced Thrust Takeoff 26,300 lb 6,575 lb -25% Per take-off: + 10 $ fuel (10 kg) $ maintenance cost* 19,725 lb * Estimated average savings individual results will vary Targeting fuel savings? Yes!! But not to the detriment of global savings! 11 / SFCO2 Presentation IATA Airline Cost Conference August 2014
FUEL SAVINGS SFCO 2 : GOING BEYOND FUEL EFFICIENCY Fuel Costs Optimize overall fuel consumption Flight operations (CDA, Reduced flap angle, de-rate, etc ) Ground operations (APU usage, Engine usage for taxi, etc ) Engine Maintenance Costs Optimize engine maintenance costs Improve engine performance Increase time on wing Other Maintenance Costs Optimize other maintenance costs APU usage Brakes usage Thrust reverse usage Considering the big picture to find the best trade-off 12 / SFCO2 Presentation IATA Airline Cost Conference August 2014
