2 the rainforest Half of the rainforests in MADAGASCAR have been cleared. now there are protected areas but mining and other activities threaten the wildlife. The main problem is that most Malagasy people don t even have enough to eat or jobs to pay for basic things like wood for cooking. my name is PRUDENCE and I am a girl scout superhero! my superpower is that I always USE RESOURCES WISELY. I chose MADAGASCAR for world thinking day BECAUSE IT HAS A RAINFOREST THAT NEEDS TO BE PROTECTED. color it prudence always uses resources wisely and she knows our most important resource is our earth. the health of our planet is important to prudence. she knows that natural resources like the Living the law Cut it out! Madagascar Bullseye silk Moth Because local people are no longer allowed to hunt and gather in the rainforest, their already poor lives have gotten worse. however one idea is to teach about silk farming so they have income to provide for their families. rainforests need extra attention. prudence feels that educating others is a great place to start! 2

3 ANIMALS IN MADAGASCAR JAIME CRINOS, SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY Extinct Elephant Bird Madagascar was home to a giant bird believed to have been more than 10 feet tall and weighing over 800 lbs. Their eggs were over 12 long and one egg could feed over 100 people. The elephant bird lived in Madagascar for 60,000 years and probably became extinct from hunting about 300 years ago. It is important to protect the remarkable animals of Madagascar from extinction. endangered animals Madagascar has several threatened animals. The Silky Sifaka, a lemur, which is one of the rarest mammals on earth. The Ploughshare tortoise is found only in a small area of Madagascar where as few as 1,000 survive. These tortoises can be sold illegally for up to $200,000 on exotic pet markets. Three quarters of the animals that live in madagascar can only be found there. there are no penguins in madagascar but there are plenty of insects, birds, frogs, reptiles and primates. there are also no apes, monkeys, elephants, zebras, giraffes, lions, hyenas, rhinos, antelopes, buffalo, camels or even cats or dogs like you might expect to find in africa. because it Is an island these animals never found their way across the Mozambique channel. did? you know Madagascar Hissing cockroaches can be 3 long. they hiss by exhaling air though their breathing holes. 3

Indri Famous for its eerie wail that sounds like a humpback whale. Mouse Lemur They are nocturnal and feed on insects, fruit, and flowers. Aye-Aye This nocturnal animal looks like it is made up from other animals parts. Lemurs Lemurs are a group of primates found only on the island of Madagascar. Today there are around 60 types of lemurs that live in just about every habitat across the island. Sadly, due to forest destruction and hunting, many lemurs are threatened with extinction. Verreaux s Sifaka They walk on their hind legs while holding their front legs in the air. Ruffed Lemur The entire community cares for infants which are kept in group nest. 5 plants IN MADAGASCAR Madagascar has many unique plants. It is important to save these plants from extinction. Some are used as herbal remedies. The Madagascar periwinkle is used to treat childhood leukemia and other cancers. Make a Baobab Tree cut a hole in a paper plate to fit an empty paper towel roll. cut off the bottom of a paper lunch bag. cut slits 4 down into the bag. push the other end of the bag into the paper towel roll. Avenue of the Baobab The baobab is the national tree of Madagascar. Baobabs store large volumes of water in their trunks which is why elephants and other animals chew the bark during dry seasons. The Malagasy people use the baobabs for shelter, ceremonies, food, medicine, fiber and juices. It has the only fruit in the world that dries naturally on the branch. This means the fruit simply needs to be harvested and the seeds removed to produce a powder that is exceptionally nutrient-dense - and super tasty! shape the branches by cutting more slits and twisting the ends. crumple small pieces of green tissue paper for leaves. glue the leaves in place. 5

Sometimes a white paste is used to draw designs on the face. Make Your own face paint put 1/4 cup of lotion in a small paper cup. Add food coloring. 11 basket weaving The Malagasy people are known for their weaving skills. try weaving your own basket. 1 staple the pattern to a sheet of craft foam. cut out. glue the end of a ball of yarn to the weaver shape near the inside. weave in and out around the weaver shape. push the yarn strands close together. the foam will naturally start to bend up to create a bowl shape. continue weaving until complete. trim and glue

12 the land Most of the malagasy people live off the land. this includes using the forest trees as fuel to cook. the forests are also being turned into rice fields so people can feed their families. unfortunately, this has led to environmental damage and loss of natural habitats for animals. madagascar Rice fields are a common sight. Many valley floors have rice paddies. half of Madagascar's species are found in the rainforests that are located on the east coast of the island. many are found nowhere else on the earth. Mozambique Channel Antananarivo, the capitol of Madagascar, is the island s largest city. you can shop, go sightseeing, listen to street musicians or mingle with the friendly locals. 13 The Flag One theory is that Red and white were the official colors of the Malagasy people of southeast Asia who inhabited the island. the color green was the color used by the Hova people, a social class that were instrumental in the country,s movement towards independence. booth idea Color and cut out your flag. fold it in half over a string with the rest of the girls flags. 13

14 food in Madagascar most families make their own version of a one-pot dish called Romazava. it is considered the national dish of Madagascar. Romazava is usually eaten with rice for lunch or dinner. The basic ingredients are beef, pork and chicken cut into equal-size cubes, chopped onions, tomatoes, spinach and crushed garlic. Make sure ingredients are clearly displayed before serving food at your thinking day event. 6 well ripened bananas 1 cup all-purpose flour ¼ cup granulated sugar ¼ cup water Banana Fritters Makes about 3 dozen 2 fritters 1 teaspoon nutmeg 1 teaspoon vanilla Vegetable oil for frying Mash bananas with a fork or potato masher or use a blender to turn into a pulp. Add flour. Mix water, vanilla and sugar to make a syrup. Add syrup and nutmeg to banana/flour pulp. Add more water, if needed, to make batter to pancake consistency. Mix well. Fry like pancakes in oiled frying pan until golden brown. lemur eye swaps Cut two 1 circles out of goldenrod colored card stock. draw a black pupil in the middle. glue to the inside of a bottle cap. glue two bottle caps together. glue a flat back pin to the back.
