Introduction Let s Go Swaziland (LGS) is a programme of Let s Go Africa Community Development Internship & Volunteer Agency. The concept derived from a volunteer and internship placement programme in Ghana that was initially part of The Dreams in Africa Foundation. This Dutch foundation, started in 2010 by Noor van Hout as means of financing The Friends Foundation, a local NGO focused on youth care, education and development in Ghana. In cooperation with her brother, Roel van Hout, who has studied, travelled and gained a lot of experience through developmental work in Southern Africa as well, they decided to expand and professionalize the programme. And so they did. Let s Go Africa Community Development Internship & Volunteer Agency is officially registered as a company in The Netherlands on the 25th of March Through our volunteer and internship placements, we aid organisations in the forms of on-the-ground support and financial donations in Southern and West Africa. Let s Go Africa is designed to link people from around the world to local projects, NGO s (Non-Profit Organisations) in underdeveloped countries such as; Swaziland, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, South Africa and Ghana (West Africa). Simultaneously, the Let s Go Swaziland programme seeks to promote selfsustainability, empowerment and development by providing practical support and financial assistance to local projects. Through our local initiatives we aim to support and empower people in the community to achieve a higher standard of living. Finally, LGS recognizes education/training as an integral component of development. Therefore, the programme focuses on the stimulation and expansion of educational/training opportunities in all sectors to improve the quality of life for the poor, vulnerable and needy people in these communities. When you are interested to travel to Swaziland, we invite you to read this Travel Guide and hope it will provide greater insight into the country. You can contact us for questions or comments any time. Roel van Hout Programme Manager Let s Go (Southern) Africa The Netherlands Noor van Hout Programme Manager Let s Go Ghana 1

1. About Let s Go Africa 1.1 An innovative way of working You pay less money than you would with other travel organisations and you can create your own trip exactly how you want it. Let s Go Africa established the Let s Go Swaziland travel programme out of carefully selected travel highlights that Roel has been experiencing throughout many years of his time spend in Southern Africa. Roel is your contact person regarding the LGS travel programme and is closely connected to the local projects and their people that are part of a trustful partnership. The partnership is established in 2014, when he visited all the partners in Southern Africa and had personal contact with the managers of all the organizations. Travellers will receive preparation, guidance and a specific customized travel schedule before they leave, so that they know what to expect of their customized trip, accommodation, culture, safety, living environment and travelling conditions in Swaziland. In addition, we will assist you with making the necessary arrangements before departure including; visa application, vaccinations, flight ticket, health and travel insurance, money issues etc. 1.2 Vision Let s Go Africa Community Development Internship & Volunteer Agency is an innovative and trustworthy mediation agency with a unique placement programme for every intern and volunteer that wants to make a significant change in Africa. LGA links young professionals from around the world to local projects and organisations in Southern Africa in order to foster international exchange, to build capacity and to make an impact for all parties. We are experienced and specialized in long term development that is empowered by the people in the communities. At the same time, we aim to achieve personal development for our clients through personal guidance, contact with the people in the communities and the total experience as a whole. With our new travel service we aim to give people a unique customized travel experience, including special local encounters. 1.3 Mission Let s Go Swaziland aims to improve the well-being of people in the disadvantaged communities via partner organisations by providing them with interns and 2

volunteers who contribute in development in Swaziland. The focus on the close cooperation and continuous communication with our local partner organisations in Swaziland are crucial to achieve long- term impacts for all parties involved. At the same time, LGS will contribute to foster exchange and community engagement between people world-wide, especially youth, in order to enhance Swaziland s building capacities and capabilities. 1.4 Aim Let s Go Swaziland selects and links interns and volunteers to projects (NGO s) in Swaziland via the programme coordinator/contact person who is directly connected to the various organisations. Using this method, more money will reach and remain where development is most needed. Hereby, the aim of this new initiative is; to support local projects in Swaziland in order to help them achieve self sustainability and independence. 1.5 Procedures Your personalized travel schedule and other travel services will be discussed with you before departure. Of course, this plan can always be changed according to your wishes or the needs. Package costs will be paid at least 2 months before departure after all necessary documentation has been processed. All questions and concerns regarding preparations/arrangements before departure will be addressed by Roel, your contact person in the Netherlands. In respect for the hospitality in Swaziland, we expect you to deal with cultural differences with respect at all times. To ensure this we ask you to sign our code of conduct, which also states that Let s Go Africa is not responsible in any way if something might happen. 1.6 How to finance your trip You are probably enthusiastic about going on a life changing travel experience, but maybe you are having some doubts on how to pay for all this. Understandable. That is why we outlined some advice on how to make your trip happen, perhaps preventing you from getting a financial headache. 3

1. First of all make a proper calculation for the total duration of your stay including; accommodation, transportation, trips, travel service, ticket, visa, cost of living etc. 2. Because you re not living in the Netherlands at that time, make a calculation for your total living expense (groceries, going out, transportation costs etc.) you would have spend in your home country for the amount of time you want to go to Swaziland. So, actually you can deduct this amount from your total cost of going to Swaziland. Don t count your rent (unless you found somebody to rent your room while you re away) and other bills you still have to pay in your home country. * If you go for 3 months or longer we advise you to sublet your room/house/apartment for the duration of your stay in Swaziland to reduce your costs. 3. As a student in the Netherlands, you probably receive a study scholarship from the IB-groep. Remember that when you are still registered at home with your parents, you can register yourself as living away from home for the duration of your internship. When you are already registered away from home you can search for extra scholarship/loaning possibilities if needed. The amount of money per month you receive depends on your personal situation. 4. When you have an O.V. chip card (in the Netherlands) you can get a reimbursement (use to be about 65 per month) when you stay longer than 1 month abroad. Please check 5. Check for more saving advices: or other websites on how to cut down on your monthly expenses. 6. We can speak in the name of all former travellers of Let s Go Africa; this experience is simply priceless! Please read about the experiences of these people on our website: for Dutch for English Visa requirements Swaziland People need to get a visa in advance when staying longer than two weeks Swaziland! Make sure you do not stay longer than your visa allows you to, because you will get serious problems! For more information on visa requirements please see appendix 2: preparations. 4

1.8 Conditions 1. You are responsible for all the necessary arrangements before departure (passport, visa, vaccinations, ticket, health and travel insurance, credit card, cash money etc.), but of course we will assist you with these arrangements. 2. 9 3. Swaziland 3.1 About Swaziland Swaziland is Africa s last remaining true monarchy and in its unique laid-back way is steeped in Swazi culture and tradition. It is a scenic, hilly Kingdom with a friendly ageold way of life that captures the heart of anyone who takes the time to experience it. Swaziland has a rich culture and heritage, as well as some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. It is the smallest country in the southern hemisphere, but also one of the most interesting with lots of fun and adventure. Swaziland is a microcosm of Africa with strong traditions, vibrant cultural festivals and friendly laidback people. It is a country of scenic beauty and huge possibility being strategically located between South Africa and Mozambique and having relatively well developed infrastructure and a peaceful history and reputation. The capital city is Mbabane. Our work in Swaziland Despite its stable history and peaceful reputation, Swaziland has the world s highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rate which has taken its toll on the population leaving many children orphaned or vulnerable. It also has an unemployment rate of about 30% which rises to over 50% among the youth. These factors combine leading to approximately 63% of the population living below the poverty line. Young people in particular are increasingly becoming vulnerable to poverty; around 31% of children in Swaziland experience health challenges due to malnutrition, and on average children attend school for just seven years. Many of Swaziland's children have lost their parents and thus face food shortages, lack of adequate shelter and care, and most of all lack of attention and love. Our work here involves creating a brighter future for orphaned and vulnerable children and supporting local business and economic empowerment. 7

Facts Swaziland is one of the only remaining African monarchies Swaziland is the smallest country in the Southern Hemisphere Swaziland accounts for 14% of the recorded plant life in Southern Africa Nearly 3/4 of Swazis work in agriculture Swaziland s main export is sugar Swaziland is divided into four districts: the northwest Hhohho; Lubombo in the east; the central-west Manzini; and the southern Shiselweni Swaziland s capital is Mbabane, though its Royal and Legislative capital is Lobamba Mealie meal (ground corn) is one of the main foods eaten in Swaziland History Monarchy in Swaziland King Sobhuza II was the son of Bhunu and Lomawa Ndwandwe. He was born on the 22nd of July 1899 at Zombodze. Sobhuza believed in peaceful discussion and was against violence. During his rule, he negotiated Swaziland's independence from Britain. He managed to do that without bloodshed and Swaziland became independent on the 6th of September Sobhuza also believed in unity. In Swaziland he worked hard to make a non-racial society. He also preached unity among other African leaders. Sobhuza was also a believer in education, both formal and informal. He died on the 21st of August 1982 at the Embo State House, at the age of 83. At the time of his death, he was the longest reigning monarch in the world. King Mswati III (born Prince Makhosetive Dlamini on 19 April 1968) is the current King (Swazi language: Ngwenyama or Ingwenyama) of Swaziland and head of the Swazi Royal Family. He was crowned King of Swaziland on 25 April 1986 at the age of 18, thus becoming the youngest ruling monarch at the time in the world. Together with his mother Ntfombi Tfwala, now Queen Mother (Ndlovukati), he rules the country as an absolute monarchy. Mswati III and currently has 15 wives. Culture Cultural Event Reed Dance (Umhlanga) This is Swaziland s best known cultural event, which happens late August / early September each year. In this eight-day ceremony, young girls cut reeds, present them 8

to the Queen Mother (Indlovukazi) ostensibly to repair the windbreak around her royal residence and then dance in celebration. Up to 40,000 girls take part, dressed up in brightly coloured attired - making it one of the biggest and most spectacular cultural events in Africa. The proper festivities kick off on day six, when dancing gets under way in the afternoon. Each group drops their reeds outside the Queen Mother s quarters then moves to the main arena, where they dance and sing their songs. The dancing continues on day seven, when the king is present. Each regiment dances before him in turn. Incwala A ceremony that has lasted for hundreds of years, it is one of the last remaining examples of what was previously common practice in many African countries. Often translated as first fruits festival, the tasting of the first of the season s bounty is only one part of this long rite. Essentially this is about cleansing and renewal, and above all celebrating kingship. Every Swazi may take part in the public parts of the Incwala. Spectators are permitted and you may not take photographs except by special permit. The best day to attend is Day four of the Big Incwala, when the feasting and dancing reach a climax, and you will see thousands of people including warriors in full battle regalia thronging the royal parade grounds. The songs, dances and ritual that take place inside the royal kraal remain a matter of utmost secrecy and may not be recorded or written down. The event takes place around the last week of December / first week of January. The dates for the event are released relatively close to the time as they derive from ancestral astrology. Incwala event 9

Climate The weather in Swaziland varies depending on the season it can be very hot and quite cold and all the temperatures in between! So please pack considering the guidelines below anything from swim wear to hoodies may be required! The Swaziland summer is opposite to the northern hemisphere, with hot temperatures being experienced in December and colder temperatures in July. so bring a waterproof and shoes suitable for rainfall so bring swim wear and light, cool clothing. Temperatures can cool in the evening, particularly in October and March so bring a fleece or similar for the evenings particularly in the evening when temperatures can drop to 1 or 2 degrees. Days can be warm and sunny and also cold, so bring a mix of clothing Highlights National Parks and Safari opportunities Swaziland has an expansive system of reserves and national parks for a country so small, and you can be treated to excellent close encounters with wildlife including black and white rhino, elephant, lions, giraffe and zebra in some of these areas. Swaziland's rich variety of landscapes and habitats gives it a profusion of fauna and flora, with the sheer number of species being mind-boggling by most European standards. The country is not large enough to offer lots of big game experiences, but it has some 17 protected areas which are home to a very wide range of species, including the sought after Big 5. Swaziland is also the perfect place to get to grips with many smaller creatures often overlooked on safari elsewhere, and it is a bird-watcher s paradise. Our national parks include: Hlane Royal National Park Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary Lubombo Conservancy Ngwempisi Wilderness Area Malolotja Nature Reserve Phophonyane Nature Reserve Mbuluzi Game Reserve Summerfield Botanical Garden Mkhaya Game Reserve Mlawula Nature Reserve 10

For more information about Swaziland, check out our website Go to media to get a good impression through photos, videos and experiences described by former travellers. 3.2 Living in a guest house It is possible to visit some of our partner projects to experience their daily work in the communities and stay over for the night. In general the costs are higher when you require more luxury and privacy. If you want to organize your own accommodation please discuss this with your contact person at all times. Safety is first priority! The guest house in Lobamba is very spacious and nice. The rent, water and electricity are included in the accommodation costs. Please treat this guest house as your own place, so with respect and always follow instructions from the owner/housekeeping staff. Keep in mind you are a guest in another country. However, we advise you to stay in a host family because it s an experience on its own. 3.3 Living in a host family (on request only for Swaziland) It is also possible to stay some nights at a host family home, which are usually in walking distance from the project. A risk assessment has been done, so that they are safe and reliable. According to former volunteers these host families are often the best part of their whole experience. The family provides you with all your basic needs; your own room, mostly two meals a day (because during lunch time you will be at the project most of the time) and a comfortable and safe place to live. Of course you can also make your own lunch pack in the morning before you leave to work. They will also keep the house as clean as possible for you, so please do the same for them. The daily life at a host family is very enjoyable. The family is very courteous and respectful of your wishes and privacy and they will always greet you with a warm and friendly smile. Although you have a lot of freedom and space, you have to remember that you 12

are living in their home. Therefore, remember to respect their wishes, rules and privacy too. 3.4 Safety (especially when crossing the border to South Africa) Swaziland is generally much safer then South Africa, especially where the project partners are located it is a very relax touristic area. Swazi s are known for their friendly attitude but, like many other places in today's world crime can be a problem. All you need to do is take the usual sensible precautions and follow some basic safety rules. Do not be afraid for things that might happen to you or stories on crime, but always be cautious, follow these advices and trust your instinct. Don t trust strangers! If you feel like you want to have more information on safety or other topics regarding your trip to Swaziland, please contact Roel as he is very experienced. When you arrive in Swaziland, feel free to ask your questions to your supervisor or local contact person at all times. Your safety must always be the first priority, before experiencing all the beauty Swaziland has to offer you. Crime occurs more often at night in the bigger cities in Swaziland. Of course, that is no guarantee nothing will happen anywhere else. At least you drastically reduce the risk by taking advice from your supervisor and staff members on safety matters, when going out. Check beforehand that the areas you plan to visit are safe, by asking your reliable contacts about it. Other important advice is to never hitchhike, or don't accept or carry items for strangers. Try to always go out, walk around and go home with a group of people at night and let people know where you re going. Never ignore safety warnings from local people, because they never warn you without a good reason! Know where you're going before you set off, particularly at night, watch your possessions, don't walk alone in dodgy areas and always lock your doors when you leave the house and at night. And, like anywhere else, there are some areas of the major cities that are known to be more risky than others. It is easy to avoid these and still have a good time. If you cannot avoid such areas, then don't wear visible jewellery or carry cameras and bags over your shoulder. Limit the amount of money you carry on you and keep mobile phones and wallets tucked away where no one can see or reach them. Police (when travelling to Mozambique) 13

On the road or even on the streets and the beach, police can be very annoying and corrupt. They, will stop or hold you for now reason as they know you are a foreigner and they can take money from you. So, please beware do not walk around drunk on the beach or give them any reason to stop you. Always carry a copy of your ID with you and don t let them scare you when they threaten to take you to the police station. If you have done nothing wrong, you can call their bluff! They will let you go. If you did do something wrong like over speeding, you can pay them off. This is unfortunately how it goes. Try to avoid giving your original ID and don t carry too much cash, because they will ask for all of it! Vehicle safety (especially when travelling to South Africa or Mozambique) When driving a private vehicle, either borrowed or hired, take some simple precautions to avoid car hijackings or "smash-and-grabs". As a driver, be on the alert when coming to a halt at traffic lights or stop streets, as well as when arriving at or leaving any premises. If you do not trust the situation, continue driving carefully even when the traffic lights are red. Car doors should always be locked, also while driving, and valuables are better kept in the boot or under the seats. Plan your route beforehand. Make sure the map you consult is a current one. When parking at night, choose well-lit or security-patrolled parking areas. Street security guards will usually ask whether they can watch over your car, and in return should be paid a small fee anything from R5 upwards. Always take out the radio and leave the dashboard cabin empty and open (to show there is nothing valuable in your car) when you park. Do not give people a reason to smash your window and steal whatever is in your vehicle. Only use reputable taxi, travel/tour operators and transport services. If you're not sure, ask your supervisor/host family to recommend a service provider for you. Dangers & annoyances Keep off high ground during electrical storms and avoid camping in the open. In the highlands, school children and herd boys may request sweets! sweets! ; responding to this encourages begging. On the last Friday of the month, when many people are paid and some of them get drunk, things can get boisterous and occasionally aggressive. 14

Dangers of the Ocean (when travelling to South Africa or Mozambique) In South Africa and Mozambique popular areas are right next to the Atlantic and Indian Ocean. These waters are infested with all kinds of sharks, of which Bull, Tiger and Great White Sharks (which are very dangerous) and other animals that are much bigger (Whales) or deadlier (Jelly fish e.g.) then you. This should however not prevent you from going in the water, but always ask local people for advice when going for a swim or surf. This must not be your biggest concern when you are going into the sea, because statistically you are way more likely to face Mother Nature s true power, the current! Even though you are a really good swimmer the current should never be underestimated. The Southern African shore is enormous and in every area the power of the ocean is totally different and can be very dangerous! We are talking about strong undercurrents and rip currents that can drag you into the sea when you are only still standing in the water until your knees. Never swim at night, never swim alone, never ignore signs, always ask and follow advice of local experts and make sure lifeguards are on duty. The same rules apply for people that go surfing, because even your board will not safe you if Mother Nature is in a bad mood. Always watch each other s back and make sure you can quickly get help when someone is in trouble. First get to the lifeguards and alert people around you, before deciding to do a heroic act. 15

ATM safety When using automatic teller machines (ATM s) in Swaziland, practice the generally accepted safety precautions you would employ when at home. Never accept an offer from a stranger to help you with your transaction. Be alert and watch that no one is looking over your shoulder or steals your card when you turn your back. Do not let anybody distract you while standing at the ATM. Take the biggest amount of money and your cards straight to a safe place in your accommodation and only carry the necessary amount of cash on you. If your ATM card is withheld by the machine, approach the bank to release it, or call the helpline number that can be found at the ATM. Report stolen or lost cards immediately. Hostel or hotel safety Never leave your luggage and other possessions unattended. Know where your things are. Remember to store valuables in the safety deposit box and keep your room locked at all times. The cleaning personnel cannot be trusted so make sure you keep your valuables at a safe place at all times. Don't leave your room keys lying around; rather hand the key in at the desk when you leave. Emergencies In Swaziland, the general alarm number is 999 and ambulance by dialling (Trauma Link Swaziland) and briefly explain what happened. This call is free from any phone box or landline. Inform your supervisor or local contact person immediately and contact Roel as soon as possible. Lost passports It's a good idea to travel with certified photocopies of your valuable documents, keeping the originals in a safe place. If you lose your passport, report the loss as soon as possible to the Swaziland Police Service, as well as to your country's embassy or consulate in Swaziland. 3.5 Food If you have special food habits please let us know in advance. You will have three meals each day. You can pack your lunch if you re not coming back from the project to the accommodation in the afternoon break. Cooking facilities are present and you 16

will find small shops in town and mostly the supermarket is in the neighbourhood. Breakfast and lunch are all self-catering at the accommodation. In Swaziland there is a great selection of dishes which vary from western food, to seafood, and local delicacies. Discover the many flavours of Swaziland, whose historical influences from Africa, and Great Britain have contributed to this interesting mix. Swaziland's food culture features potato, seafood, meat, rice and vegetables. Corn based dishes include mealie pap, a maize porridge. There are also stews made with peanuts. The South African influence in the Swaziland kitchen is big and known for its beans, curries and the beloved braai. So, it is diverse and above all delicious. 3.6 Surroundings & facilities Electricity Swaziland uses the European 2 pin plug and also the South African 3 pin plug. You are advised to bring an appropriate adaptor for your electronic equipment. Please note that South African plugs rarely feature in Worldwide travel adaptors and an adaptor specifically designed for South Africa is recommended. I'll be able to phone home? Swaziland has a reasonable developed telecommunications network. Mobile-cellular service is expanding fast. A lot of people in Swaziland own mobile phones, many using them to access the Internet. You can easily call with your own mobile phone in Swaziland. You only have to check if your phone is a trial band phone and if it is SIMlock free. Most new mobile phones have this automatically. When you arrive in Swaziland, you can buy a cheap SIM-card + credit from a local provider like Vodacom. It works like a pre-paid card in Europe, but you might have to register your SIM-card with your ID when you purchase it. If you keep on using your European provider it will cost you a lot of money. 17

How is the Internet? Usually, a decent WIFI connection is available at the accommodation or at some of the restaurants in town. The Internet speed varies depending on the connection and the location. Besides WIFI you can also purchase internet credit for your mobile phone at all kinds of shops and even in the supermarkets. Data is most commonly purchased by the gigabyte through a local mobile network sim card. You are advised to switch off automatic updates and notifications on your mobile device as this will reduce the amount of gigabytes you will use. You have to be careful if you use your USB-Flash Drive or Digital Camera in the Internet café due to viruses. Post Office: There are post offices in most towns. You can use the address; PO box of the project you are staying. What if I m ill? There is a volunteer coordinator and Lodge Manager on 24 hour call in the event that a client needs medical treatment or a trip to the hospital. What currency can I use in Swaziland? Swaziland s currency is the Swazi Lilangeni, but South African Rands are accepted almost everywhere and have the same value. Visa and MasterCard are accepted in larger venues and shops and there some ATMs available to withdraw cash from within the larger towns. Most small restaurants and shops will require cash. How is the medical care? There are small clinics in the villages for minor problems and bigger hospitals in Mbabane and Manzini. In the big hospitals they have more Western equipment and knowledge. The doctors however, might have a different approach from what you are used to. Sometimes they do not provide much information or explanation. They can be easily insulted if you ask for information because they think you doubt their treatment or knowledge in medicine. However, it is important to use your own judgement. If you would like to get more information, simply say that you do not understand it and you would like some more explanation. 18

Can I drink the water? Although some people drink from the tap, we advise you not to. It is better not to take any risks if it is not necessary. Bottled mineral water, both sparkling and still, is readily available in most places. In some areas, the tap water is mineral-rich, and you may experience a bit of gastric distress for a day or two, but in general nothing really bad can happen from it. Will I get to see wild animals? The wildlife of Swaziland is composed of its flora and fauna. Swaziland has many species of mammals such as lions, elephants, buffalo and rhino s and birds. You can find them in the different parks described under highlights. You can also cross the border to South Africa to see hundreds more species in their natural environments. One of the world's first wildlife conservation areas is South Africa's Kruger Park, more than a century old. Today it is part of a single broad conservation area that spans private and public game parks and stretches across national borders into neighbouring Swaziland and Zimbabwe. Always close windows and doors and don t carry food or drinks around Baboons 19

4. Your contact person My name is Roel van Hout and I live in Cuijk, The Netherlands. I studied Sport, Health Management (BA) and thereafter I did my Masters degree in Sport, Recreation and Exercise Science at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa. In 2013, my scientific article was published on the relation between sport and quality of life; ( Participation in sport and the perceptions of quality of life of high school learners in the Theewaterskloof Municipality, South Africa ). I specialized in developmental work and project management in mainly Southern Africa through several years of study and work experience. From an early age, I have travelled and volunteered abroad in countries in all continents; Europe, Asia, Australia, North and South America and Africa. These experiences shaped my interests in other cultures and my desire to empower underprivileged and vulnerable people in developing countries. In relation to my studies, I am especially interested by the positive impact that sport can have on the lives of children living in disadvantaged communities, when implemented in the right way. Children are the future leaders of every nation and they have the right of good education and opportunities to grow. With my previous experiences, acquired knowledge and skills in the Netherlands and abroad, I aim to make a difference. During my Bachelor study in 2006 I went to South Africa for the first time for a 6 month internship in Grabouw. The country, its people and the whole experience with my fellow students made a life changing impact on me. Therefore, I decided to go back in 2009 to visit my South African friends and I decided to apply for a study at the University of the Western Cape. After finishing my study, I knew that I wanted to pursue development work in African countries. So, I decided to look for voluntary work and found something at a programme of Skillshare International in Cape Town. Besides that I also visited other African countries like Swaziland, Mozambique, Lesotho, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and the Let s Go Ghana projects as well. After these experiences, I realized that the saying; You can leave Africa, but Africa never leaves you! is really true for me in particular. All together I spent years studying, working, travelling and living in Southern Africa, and established a network of trusted people. The local supervisors at the projects will 20

be people that are part of my network and will continuously be in close contact with you in Swaziland and me in the Netherlands. I will assist you before, during, and after your working experience at all times. With Let s Go Africa I want to offer people around the world the same opportunity that I had; going to an African country in order to contribute in community development and experience the way of life in one of the most beautiful countries on this continent. Let s Go and come back with an unforgettable and life changing experience. Find out yourself why Swaziland is called the undiscovered beauty of Africa. 27 Appendix 2: Preparations In this appendix, we want to provide an overview on what you ll need to prepare for your trip. The information on these pages is not exhaustive, we will send you some more information as soon as you re accepted to the programme, and of course you can always contact your contact person with any questions you may have! Insurance Travel, health (and diving) insurance are compulsory. Let s Go Swaziland does not provide its travellers with health, travel or dive insurance (for Mozambique or South Africa). However, all people need to purchase all these insurances and we take no responsibility against any loss or fatality. Please check with your insurance company what the possibilities are regarding diving and extra health packages. Evacuation medical insurance is very important as the Swazi health system is very limited in the event of any accident and there are no decompression chambers in Mozambique. The diver access network (DAN) provides excellent dive insurance at a very cheap price. DAN also includes travel insurance which varies dependent on the selected package. Flight & Travel The partner organisation recommends people to fly into Johannesburg. They prefer you to arrive the first Monday of the month, so all people can be picked up at the same time. The partner will be there to meet you and bring you from Johannesburg airport to the accommodation and the project in Swaziland for introduction. The easiest and cheapest is to fly to Johannesburg serviced by many different international airlines such as British Airways, KLM, Emirates, Virgin Atlantic, Turkish Airways, South African Airways and others. All people are responsible for booking their own flights and sending the flight itinerary to Let s Go Swaziland. Packing List Below you will find a packing list to help you get organized before you arrive in Swaziland. Credit and maestro Cards, cash Passport, drivers license and ID copies Insurance papers 25

Mosquito/Insect repellent (30% DEET and up)/citronella/mosquito coils Sun-Block & after sun Camera Unlocked cell phone (you can also purchase a phone when your there) Guide and travel books about Swaziland (like Lonely Planet) Toiletries (Moisturizer, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, feminine products, etc.) Earplugs and eye mask Basic Medicines (personal medication, paracetamol, antibiotic cream, antibiotics, re-hydration sachets, bandages, cold/flu meds, disinfects; Beta dine) Swaziland has western pharmacies where you can also get these medicines. First aid kit Flashlight and Swiss Army knife/leatherman Electricity adapter/converter (can be bought in Swaziland) Sunglasses Water resistant shoes (hiking shoes) Flip-flops/sandals Formal shoes Dress/shirt and trousers/skirt for work Travel towel and washcloth Bathing suit Rainproof outdoors jacket Batteries Alarm clock, watch Thermometer Hand Sanitizer Money The official currency in Swaziland is the Swazi Lilangeni (SZL). In most places the South African Rand, which has the same value, is also accepted. As of June 2016 the exchange rates are: ZAR 1 South African Rand= 1 SZL $1 US Dollar = 15,23 SZL 1 Euro = 17,10 SZL 26

1 Pound = 21,63 SZL Or view the current exchange rate here: We recommend that you withdraw Rands in South Africa or Lilangeni from a cash point in Mbabane (Barclays Bank) on arrival. If using MasterCard or if you have a Visa card then you can definitely withdraw money at the other banks in town. The lodge accepts all major credit cards, but does not always have spare cash to exchange, so a quick trip to an ATM is always better, which our staff will happily facilitate. So, we strongly recommend that you bring your Maestro card and a credit card with a MasterCard or VISA logo. Do not keep all your money, bank cards and important documents all together. You can photocopy your cards and we suggest that you always have the most important phone numbers of your bank with you, to cancel your cards if needed. Health & Vaccinations Visit a travel health clinic before you leave to receive up-to-date information on diseases and vaccinations for Swaziland. You are required to get a yellow fever vaccination, and you will need to show proof of this to enter the country. It is recommended to receive the following vaccinations: Yellow Fever Tuberculoses (TBC; BCG vaccination) Hepatitis A Hepatitis B DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio) Rabies Malaria prevention Swaziland is a high risk malaria location and preventive medications are recommended. Consult your general practitioner (GGD) and please note that for diving the following anti-malaria medications are NOT allowed; Lariam, Mefliam (Mefloquine) and Quinine. Also keep in mind that summer time in Swaziland, November till March are more humid and mosquito s are more abundant than in 27

winter time. Repellant is available at local shops and at the lodge, but always bring some of your own to be sure. Besides that mosquito nets and fans are provided in the guest house. A proper preventative method for the spread of malaria is treated bed nets. Please contact a travel health clinic (also possible in Swaziland) that would be able to give you a prescription to get the medicine you need to protect yourself against malaria and look at the websites on malaria provided, to better educate yourself. Do your own research and be well informed! Visit government sites on disease control and get the facts before you leave: We suggest that you take medical insurance that covers ambulatory services and medical evacuation as standard. Applying for a VISA Getting into Swaziland Let s Go Swaziland will help you with your visa request and/or extension. Remember that you are responsible yourself, that the arrangements are according to the Swaziland legislations. The following information is subject to change. Visa requirements For more information on the different type of Swazi Visa we refer you to the website below and together with Let s Go Africa you can go through the procedure. Please do not apply for a visa without correspondence with LGA, because you might be applying for the wrong type of visa and therefore not let in the country at the border or be expelled when in Swaziland! A visa is a permit issued to people from specified countries intending to enter the Kingdom of Swaziland for holiday purposes other than work related intentions. This means that the visa is only used for tourists, volunteers, interns and business visitors. Visitors must complete immigration formalities on arrival. Nationals of Great Britain, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Botswana, Canada, China, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Gambia, Ghana, Germany, Grenada, Guyana, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malawi, Malaysia, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Poland, Portugal, Republic of China, Samoa, San Marino, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, South 28

Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania, Tonga, Trinidad, Tobago, Turkey, Uganda, USA, Zambia & Zimbabwe DO NOT need visas. Visitors from the other countries in the European Community, may obtain visas at the airport free of charge. All visitors passports must be valid for at least six months prior to leaving Swaziland. Let s Go Africa can assist Dutch passport holders with applying for a visa (if needed) at the Swazi Embassy in Brussels. We will fill out the necessary application forms and send all the documents together with your official passport via registered mail. Depending on the type of visa you are requesting, your passport will be returned with a visa by registered mail by the Swazi Embassy from Brussels in about two weeks. If needed you can even go for a visa run to one of the neighbouring countries way before your visa expires! Different visa s can also be obtained at the border post when travelling over land from South Africa. Swazi houses in Game Park 29
