2 Introduction We wanted to see the different perception of locals and tourists Are there any differences between tourists perception and locals perception? We hope to find answers to the following questions: 1. How locals see tourists? 1. Would they say their city is over-crowded in summer? 2. Is their city getting too expensive because of tourists? 3. Are their beaches way too crowded thus making them avoid them? 2. How do tourists see Split and its inhabitants? 1. Is the city too expensive? 2. Do they find the staff and people, generally (un)friendly? 3. Would they consider re-visiting Split?

3 Methodology On 26 July we tried to interview numerous people throughout the city. We attempted to interview 10 People on four different locations (the Znjan beach, the Student Campus, LIDL and Tommy supermarket) Out of those 10 people, only 4 people answered. (two at the Campus and two at the supermarket.) Not satisfied by the number of interviewees and the collected data, on 27 July, we made two Google Docs questionnaires (one targeted at locals and one targeted at tourists) and distributed them online via Facebook and Twitter.

4 Methodology Through our online questionnaires on the 27 th July, we interviewed a total of 26 people. 18 of them were tourists 15 female; 3 male 11 aged 25 and below; 4 aged 25-35; 3 aged 35 and above 8 of them were locals 5 female; 3 male 3 aged 25 and below; 4 aged 25-35; 1 aged 35 and above

6 Real-life interviews [Ljubica Maric, 20, Split, Croatia] So many Englishmen come here every year in order to party and get drunk. It s expensive for us, too. With our salaries, we can t afford to go out every night and party like the English do. I almost never go to the city beaches here. It s too crowded for my taste.

7 [Dubravka, Split, Croatia] I don t think that the city is over-crowded. It s just busy. August and July are generally the busiest months here The beaches are overcrowded, both by tourists and locals. I, for instance, would not go to Bacvice for the life of me It s expensive, yeah. That s the dark side of tourism. But, we, the locals, pay less than tourists. For instace, the taxi from here to the airport would be 150kunas for us, and kunas for tourists

11 What did the tourists say?

12 Real-life interviews [Lovro Cuk, 31, Zagreb, Croatia] I come here almost every year. At least for a weekend in summer if not for a whole vacation. And I must say, it s getting more expensive by the year. The city is beautiful though. Yes, it s crowded but I don t mind. It always is.

13 Real-life interviews [Madlen Mandel, Germany] Split is very beautiful. The architecture especially. And the food is good. It s crowded and it s sometimes difficult to find a place to put your towel down at the sand beach in the center Well, usually popular tourist places are a bit more expensive.

18 Analysis of the collected data (RL interviews) Most of the people we tried to interview, refused to give us any answer. Some said they spoke no English, but when asked in Serbian, told us that they were simply too busy or in a hurry. Those locals that did agree to answer our questions said that the city of Split is crowded but not over-crowded and pointed out that most of the time, the prices are different for tourists than they are for locals. They also said that they avoid popular city beaches. The two tourists that were willing to answer our questions seemed to enjoy Split. They also did not find the prices to be too concerning.

19 Analysis of the collected data (Google Docs) Most of the tourists say that they would visit Split again, although they consider it expensive. Depending on the person answering our survey, hospitality rates varied, so we cannot draw a concrete conclusion. Locals usually opt for less-known and less-crowded beaches, but still, most of the ones we questioned, do not seem to think that the city is obnoxiously over-crowded. Also, the majority of the locals interviewed do not consider the tourists to be the reason for the high prices.
