AN INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION UFWDA e-news July 2007 Only a short time now to the 2007 UFWDA Convention and with all the available hotel rooms booked out, it looks like there will be a reasonable attendance. It has been good too, getting advice from many of our member organizations that they are in support of the plans to restructure UFWDA. This is a critical annual meeting for UFWDA and we can only hope that our members who have made the effort to attend, will have done their research on what s proposed and considered the effects on the future viability of UFWDA and what it does for four wheeling. The Land Use Conference being run in conjunction with the convention promises to be interesting, with a number of organization representatives putting their thoughts forward. Todd Ockert, the recently appointed interim Land Use Director of UFWDA will be there and the conference provides a great opportunity to bring Todd up to speed with the wide ranging land use and access issues confronting four wheelers around the world. 3 Excerpts from the E News of the 4WD Victoria A NEW VISION On the issue of the Environment I invite you to join with me in picking up the middle ground in Victoria as the moderate environmentalist. Can you believe that? Yes, I am asking us all to become the real environmentalist. You will be aware that many club men and women are involved in a number of environmental programs. Consider the mobile land care group, the Bogong High Plains Willow eradication program, the tree planting, track clearing, camp host, community help including fencing and clean ups, car wreck removal, clean up forest programs and our new plan to develop an emergency transport logistics group. All these programs are just a part of what we all do leaving aside the community welfare that is provided because we are involved. That social position gives help, hope and support to people who in the case of flood or fire just cannot afford to cope. I have a vision that we as a collective can make a significant change to the way we see ourselves and the way the community sees us. That is we become the leaders in the environmental position. We want the public at large to see what we do and get on board with us and we lead the community in this area. We want to assume the middle ground of reason and work where we are known as the people that talk and do the work. Please talk about this issue in your club and consider how you can help us all spread the word and the vision "driving in a sustainable environment - this is what we do join us make a difference". Michael Coldham, president VICTORIA'S STATE OF THE PARKS REPORT The second State of the Parks report was released last week by the new Chair of the Parks Victoria Board. The review is a world leader in this class of information and highlights the transparent management of Parks Victoria. The report is available from the Parkweb site and provides a real time insight into the state of our parks the issues confronting us in park management, the biodiversity, flora, fauna and water issues and what a important role Park supporters play. The agreements between Parks and their peak user groups such as Four Wheel Drive Victoria, the Sporting Shooters and others demonstrate the fact that Victoria's Parks are for all people working and conserving the environment for future generation. I commend the report as a terrific read and highlight that there are 39 National Parks. 24 Marine Parks, 3 Wilderness Parks and other parks and reserves totalling, in 2005, 16.5% of Victorian land with 14,000 kilometres of tracks and roads in parks, 1,400 sites with visitor facilities and 3,700 kilometres of walking trails. FOUR WHEEL DRIVE / SES TRANSPORT LOGISTICS Expressions of interest are being sought from association members who are interested in forming a new group within the association to provide transport logistics within the SES profile in the case of fire, flood or emergency need. The mission is to form a group of advanced driver trained members who would be available as a resource to police and emergency services to transport resources and people to remote areas. The skill of our advanced trained drivers would make, in the associations view, a significant contribution to the states arsenal in the case of emergency. So if you would like to join this group would you be so kind to send an to Gavin at office@fwdvictoria.org.au and in the subject line put FWDSES and your contact details. It is hoped that we can develop groups of drivers across the whole state that will be available to help in the case of emergency. Joining the SES will give members specialized training and allow us to contribute in others ways to the broader community. From Southern Africa

4 What would life be without dreams...?? TRANS-AFRICA months around May to July 2008 (tbc) Masazane Expeditions have successfully completed three (3) trans-africa expeditions from RSA to Europe with clients...!!! And we are presently busy with the fourth... Another of these amazing expeditions is on offer again in and the closing date is closing in fast - October 2007!! There is a possibility that Dave will be doing a return expedition as well, so the final destination has not been confirmed as yet... but trans-africa it will most definitely be... The Trans-Africa Expedition 2008 will start at Camp Africa (RSA). The general route is as follows: Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt. Enjoy the thrill of experiencing Africa in your own vehicle!! Watch millions of flamingos; seek out the only true wolf on the African Continent the Simian Wolf; feel the history embedded in the Lalibela rock churches; experience the harshness of the Sahara Desert and still live to tell the tale; let the mystery of Egypt and its pharaohs overwhelm you; and much, much more Complete self-sufficiency is the rule for this entire expedition due to the lack of ablution facilities, water and fuel. Please note that this is a participatory expedition where kitchen (cooking, etc.) duties will be shared!! You know you want to join us... so go on... JUST DO IT...!! Wondering what to do this Christmas... It is not so far away you know... CHRISTMAS SERENGETI 2008 Held EVERY year The Christmas Serengeti starts in Kasane (Botswana) and runs through Zambia to Tanzania. The expedition returns via Malawi and Zambia. Take a scenic route to Lake Waka Waka; splash in the hot waters at Kapishya Hot Springs; experience the history within the walls of 'Africa House'; experience the smells and textures at Utengule Coffee Estate; spend Christmas within the adventurous air and feel of the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti; see the wildebeest; enjoy the white sands of Zanzibar, the birthplace of Freddie Mercury; relax with your toes in the soft waters and beaches of Lake Malawi while you celebrate the coming of the New Year and fresh beginnings... well need I say more even though there is so much more... We have been doing this particular expedition since 1999 / the Serengeti Millennium Expedition - and have been able to see the magnificent wildebeest herds every time. During December the wildebeest are in the southern most parts of the Serengeti... far from the Mara River... Worried about the heat - don't... At the Ngorongoro Crater you need those tracksuits... believe me it can get cold up there...
