6 I. INTRODUCTION A. Welcome From the PTO Welcome to Tunisia! ACST family! We are so happy you have joined our As an ACST parent or teacher, you are a member of the PTO (Parent Teacher Organization). The ACST PTO aims to: promote a welcoming and inclusive school community, support the school s goals through volunteer work, fundraising and enhanced educational opportunities for the students, and facilitate communication between parents, teachers and the school. The PTO has 4 volunteer, elected officers in the roles of President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. Please 5 Hand in Hand - Together We Can!

7 see the PTO website for the current PTO officers, event updates and how to volunteer. We organize several major events throughout the year such as International Day and the Spring Fair to bring together ACST s many cultures and nationalities. These events are fun for the whole family. We also organize many smaller scale activities, including preparing food for Healthy Habits Week and parent outings. Parents and teachers are welcome to attend our monthly general meetings where they can meet others, ask questions, and find out more about upcoming events. Volunteers for the school events are always appreciated! Welcome Guide The PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) at ACST has compiled this guide with information to help you get settled in Tunisia. The information below has been collected from many different sources, including many ACST parents. While reasonable efforts have been made to ensure the information in the Guide is correct, please check with the business BEFORE acting upon any information in the Guide. PTO / Youth Club Annual Events The Youth Club is a middle school & high school club which organizes a wide variety of recreational activities throughout the school year for middle school & high school students. See the Youth Club webpage: 1. Ice Cream Social Event happens early September: Ice cream, toppings, and sprinkles galore. A sweet celebration is in store. A welcome back to existing ACST families and a lovely opportunity for new families to meet everyone. 2. International Day Event in September: a highlight of the school year. International day is a celebration of our diverse community and our desire to expose our children to the countries and cultures of our world. Event organized jointly by the PTO and the Youth Club. 3. Halloween Join us if you dare for a Halloween scare in October. The perfect excuse to get spooky -- and get spooked! 4. Winter Fair Christmas winter fair in December - Festive fun for the whole family. 5. Spring Fair Spring Fair in April: Our annual carnival event on the grounds of the school. A day of field games and fun for all the kids. Event organized jointly by the PTO and the Youth Club. 6. 10 II. LIVING IN TUNIS A. General Information The currency unit is the Tunisian Dinar, with one dinar divided into 1,000 millimes. It is not tied to the money market, and it is forbidden to take abroad. It can be exchanged in banks, post offices, hotels and exchange offices around most of the country at a fixed rate. You may also use an ATM/cash point to withdraw cash for a fee, although some banks allow you to withdraw much less than others. Carrefour shopping mall has two machines inside which are reliable. The international dialing code for Tunisia is There is a basic street directory called the Plan Grand Tunis - Volume 1 that can be purchased from Carrefour. 9 Hand in Hand - Together We Can!

12 Tayara.tn : is another great online advertisement site for renting houses, buying/selling items, job finding, etc. Tunis Accueil : an comprehensive source of information for the French-speaking community on the following internet address: Trip Advisor : Useful and, as tourists return and do new reviews, it will become a better resource. Google Maps : A useful tool, but the maps are not always updated nor fully reliable. Discovertunisia.com : The Tunisian government website with a useful list of upcoming events. Medina.com.tn : Tourism information for Tunis and Hammamet. Founa Shop : Online shopping website in French with foods, including organic, household goods, and hygiene products. Home delivery. Epicerie.tn : An online shopping website in French that offers food, household goods, and pet foods with delivery to your door for a small fee. D. 13 You can choose from three service providers: Tunisie Telecom; Ooredoo; Orange. 2. Internet There is a choice of service providers, options and pricing offering unlimited DSL connections (fibre optic not generally available): GlobalNet; TopNet; Tunisie Telecom; Ooredoo; Orange. E. Utilities Electricity, water and refuse collection are provided by the Tunis Municipalities depending on where you are located. Make sure you always get your invoices and pay your bill first and complain after if there are any discrepancies. Non-payment can lead to the cutting off of services, and it is often time-consuming and difficult to get them re-connected. Both Electricity and Water bills can be paid at your nearest location. 1. Electricity The company is STEG. Usually electricity is stable in Tunisia. The electric power supply is 220/240 volts at 50Hz. Adapters may be needed for appliances brought from abroad due to plug end differences. Plugs are standard European 2 pin plugs. 12 Hand in Hand - Together We Can!

14 2. Water Water is supplied by the SONEDE. There is rarely water shortage. 3. Refuse Collection The Municipality is responsible of providing this service. There is a refuse container available most of the time in each street where people put their refuse bags for collection. 4. Recycling Service Tunisie Recyclage: Register online. Annual fees are currently 40 TND. You separate and prepare your plastic, papers, glass, batteries, and bags for pick-up. When ready, log into your account and click "my bags are ready" (or send them an ). Depending on your home address, a regular day and time will be allocated for pick up. 5. Often times the business do not have a functioning website but their Facebook also suggests pages you may like once you have looked at a related business and this can be a further source of info. Has a small kids playground. Serves during Ramadan. Mezza Maison - Lebanese cuisine. Zone touristique Gammarth near the Odeon and Ramadan Hotel El Omnia - Moroccan food at the Movenpick Gammarth Hotel. La Marsa Cozy Corner - Beside the MG supermarket in La Marsa, this café has a full menu and a place for kids to play: monkey bars, swings and a slide. Tam Tam - 7 avenue du 7 Novembre, Sidi Bou Said - Tel: Good for children, offering great pizza, salads, hamburgers, etc. Au Bon Vieux Temps - Tel: Patio has a beautiful view over the water. Au Bon Vieux Temps also in La Marsa, beside the Zephyr shopping centre. Le Pirate near the marina Tel: Charming outside area. 30 Sidi Bou Said Park - has a playground, walking paths as well as La Tournelle restaurant near the main entrance, which has a duck pond and fountain. Relaxing place to take children. El Abidine Parc the park opposite the main mosque in Carthage Soukra Park - on the Soukra road. Open during summer from the afternoon till late in the evening. Park for kids with a lot of water attractions. Belvédère Park and Zoo Off avenue Taieb M Hiri and near Place Pasteur in downtown Tunis. Open daily from 9 am - 4 pm in the winter and 9 am - 7 pm in the summer. Friguia Parc - Hammamet - Carthageland - Amusement parks in Lac 1 and Hammamet Tel: Olympic Park - a big park with the Olympic stadium off of the X2 highway, north of the Bab El Khadra neighborhood. Lots of space to run as well as a Parc de la sante which has a shaded running paths and exercise bars. The stadium runs athletics activities. Parc Urbain Ennahli - Tel: Big park with several playgrounds, a dinosaur statue, and a walking trail in Ariana. Off of the N8, on the way to Geant. 31 D. Movie Theatres Alhambra Cinema - around the side of Zephyr mall, features primarily in French and Arabic, including live theatre in Arabic. Often screens premiere movies in English for a few showings. L Agora - 5, avenue Taieb Mhiri - Tel: On the L Agora FB page, the movie schedule for the week is listed. VF is Version Française and VOSTFR is Version originale sous-titre française which is the Original version with French subtitles. So this may mean that some movies MAY be in English. Tunisia Mall Tunisia Mall - Tunisia Mall is a medium-size US style shopping mall located in Berges du lac 2. Carrefour Located at the corner of the La Marsa highway and the La Soukra road, Carrefour closely resembles a small Western style shopping mall. 39 Magasin General (or MG Maxi) is the bulk shopping store of Tunisia. Magasin General (old Promogro) is located on the La Marsa highway and in Sidi Bou Said on rue du Maroc. The store has two sections. One sells bulk supplies, such as cases of milk, water, and sodas, rice and pasta by the sack, and canned goods in gallon sizes. They also sell kitchenware, bath items, toiletries, cleaning supplies, and paper products in this section. The other section has fish, produce, meats, and dairy products. 4. Géant Tunis City Géant "Tunis City" has a large supermarket selling fresh produce, canned goods, dry goods, baked and frozen goods, deli meats, beer and wine. The department store section includes appliances, sporting goods, toys, books, clothes, gardening supplies, furniture, bedding and hardware. Although it's located on the outskirts of Tunis, it is worth the visit for its larger selection of products. It also has a fun outdoors playground. Website: 5. Monoprix Monoprix The Monoprix is a privately owned chain of stores in a variety of locations. There are two located in La Marsa, one in the Zephyr Centre and the other behind the La Marsa market. Its inventory includes groceries, school supplies, linens and kitchen items. In the food section produce, pasta, meat and dairy products, dry goods, cookies and candies are available. La Marsa Market La Marsa Market (opening hours 8 am-1 pm) A smaller version of the central market can be found behind the strip of cafés at La Marsa Corniche. This has an extensive range of quality fruit and vegetables but prices are more than the average street store. There is a small fish market and numerous butchers. Also included are a patisserie, a cheese store, poultry and egg shops, a dry goods store, a spice shop, a coffee/tea shop and a flower vendor. Along the outer walkway you can find a dry cleaner, toy store, DVD store, magazine stand, English book store, and jewellers. The market receives fresh produce daily, except for Mondays. 2. Central Market Central Market (opening hours 8 am - 2 pm) Located downtown, near the Medina, off of rue Charles de Gaulle, between rue d Allemagne and rue d Espagne, offers a huge selection of foods and many other items. There are numerous butchers, poultry shops, produce vendors, specialty shops and a fish market which is lovely to see. You can find everything from dry and canned goods to spices to handicrafts and freshly made pasta to baby turtles. On the surrounding streets are street markets with clothes, shoes, makeup and just about any other item imaginable. 3. 41 A simple popular market off of Route de la Goulette, tucked into a building between rue de L Agha and rue de 2 mars It is one block away from Café Oasis. The market has a butcher, fishmongers, vegetable, fruit and spice stands. Produce and fish are good prices. Street Stands Fresh vegetable and fruit stands are found throughout Tunis and its neighbourhoods. They are available in most neighbourhoods; they are convenient although a bit more expensive than the supermarkets or the local markets. We recommend picking your own fruit and vegetables. D. Specialist Shops Specialist Shops / Delicatessens O'Pat - Sells freshly made pasta. Located opposite the La Marsa markets on the beach side, they have some pasta which is sold over the counter, otherwise you call and order.
