The drive down the Icefields Parkway to Banff is a classic drive with lots of great views and places to walk on the way. Look out for Mountain sheep and bears.

2 WALKING IN THE CANADIAN ROCKIES Are you ready to be deeply enthralled by some of the most dramatic and soul stirring scenery in the world? The Canadian Rockies are the great outdoor playground of Canada. With its soaring mountain peaks sprinkled with a dusting of snow, to the many sparkling glaciers and crystal blue lakes we will explore this wonderland in the only way that offers you the very best views, on foot. Taking a breath you will be filled with the scent of fresh alpine air. Eagles soar above and moose can be seen in the distance as we take our steps through this splendid wilderness. Classic views include Athabasca Glacier, Lake Louise and the curiously coloured Peytro Lake. Upon arrival in Vancouver, one of the most beautifully situated cities in the world, we will take time to see the sights such as the waterfront, Stanley Park, Chinatown and Gastown through to Lynn Canyon Park. After three nights in Vancouver we move on to the Cascade Mountains and Manning Park. Manning Park, named after the Chief Forrester Ernest Manning is 70,000 hectares of unspoilt wilderness. Our walks in classic mountain scenery really begin here. We'll get up onto ridges and peaks, see the wildlife (bear, elk, eagles, coyotes, marmots and deer may all be spotted), and enjoy clean crisp mountain air along with unparalleled views, while exploring the area near Three Brothers Mountain and Lightning Lake. We journey from Manning Park up beside the North Thompson River to the Rockies and Jasper National Park passing Mt Robson, at nearly 4000m the highest point in the Canadian Rockies. While in Jasper we will walk into the Valley of the Five Lakes taking us past rolling hills, forests, small lakes all offering the chance to spot more of Canada's elusive wildlife. There may also be the opportunity this splendid wilderness. Classic views include the Athabasca Glacier, to ascend The Whistlers by cable car for a summit walk. Our week however is split between not just Jasper but Banff National Park as well, in mountain scenery renowned the world over for its beauty. HOLIDAY GRADE This is a Grade 5 moderate holiday which includes full day walks with moderate amounts of ascent and descent. The paths are mostly good, but there may be some steep and rough ground. Walks will last up to 6 hours and could involve as much as 750m of ascent and descent. Some walks will be less demanding but equally rewarding. 3 Proposed Itinerary Whilst every effort will be made to adhere to the outlined itinerary and advertised programme, local conditions can change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. This may mean that routes and timings need to be amended or the order of days may change, sometimes at short notice. Key to Meals: B - Breakfast, L - Lunch, D - Dinner. In flight meals, if appropriate, will be advised in your final travel documents Day: 1 - Vancouver () Fly from the UK to Vancouver. Arrive in Vancouver in the late afternoon. Day: 2 - Vancouver (B,D) Today we explore the exciting city of Vancouver. Starting with the vibrant harbour area we will visit the verdant Stanley Park, with its colourful totem poles, take a ferry to Granville Island and have lunch in this popular market area, and finish off walking through Chinatown and Gastown. The whole day including stops will take between 7 and 8 hours. Day: 3 - Vancouver (B,D) The majestic forests of Lynn Canyon Park are awaiting us, so close to the city but a world apart. We will follow trails through this once logged forest alongside the dramatic gorge of the Lynn River, justifiably popular with the locals. It is not a day for distant views of snow capped peaks but these will come later in our travels. 13.3km, 550 ascent / 600m descent, 6 hours Day: 4 - Manning Park (B,D) After breakfast we board our private transfer vehicle to start our journey to Manning Park. We follow the valley of the river Fraser upstream to Hope, with a stop enroute to view the Bridal Falls. At Hope there is a chance to stock up on picnic supplies and have lunch before continuing to Manning Park. There should be time upon arrival in Manning Park to enjoy a short afternoon walk. Day: 5 - Manning Park (B,D) Our first full day in Manning is spent walking around Lightning Lake, a sister lake of Thunder and Flash lakes. This is an easy days walk in terms of elevation as there is virtually no change throughout the day and if the weather is good why not take the chance for quick dip in the fresh waters. 16km, 100m Ascent/Decent, 4.5 5hours Or another first day in Manning Park option is to walk up to the remote Poland Lake, popular with wild campers and fishermen. After a steady climb through the forest we get views of the Cascade Mountains to the south, before reaching this hidden lake. On the way back we pass through the small ski area of Manning Park km 600m Ascent/Descent hours Day: 6 - Manning Park (B,D) We are really in Alpine wildlife country today as we walk the Heather Trail towards Three Brothers Mountain. Our transport takes us up to 2000m, with a stop at a stunning viewpoint on the way. We then walk through forest and Alpine meadows to a high point of 2150m. If there are strong walkers in the group there might even be the chance they can make the summit of the First Brother Mountain (2272m). Bears are well known in this area meaning you have a chance of spotting these amazing animals; it is more likely you will see squirrels and chipmunks, but you never know!.. 20km, 500m Ascent/Descent (to top of First Brother), 7 hours Day: 7 - Manning Park (B,D) Today s stride into the wildness is one of the favourites on this tour. Called the Skyline Trail it is a ridge walk with great views of the Cascade Mountains. Naturally the walk starts with a gentle but long climb to the ridge. Our path will then take us though forest and open areas over a series of hills on the ridge before dropping to the beautiful and tranquil Lightning Lake. 18km, 670m Ascent/ 775m Descent, 7.5 hours Day: 8 - Jasper (B,D) After an early start our day will be spent making the longest transfer on our tour of the Rockies as we head for Jasper. The views out the window will constantly change and we will have many chances to stretch our legs. Along the way we will stop for lunch at Clearwater where there is a visitor centre and nearby an area in September to watch the spawning areas of Sockeye and Chinook salmon. We pass the highest mountain in the Rockies, Mount Robson, before heading into Alberta and adjusting our watches forward an hour.

4 Day: 9 - Jasper (B) On our first day in Jasper we explore a popular area for walking, biking and horse riding close to the town. We walk up onto a sandy terrace left after the ice age, with views over the Athabasca River. After an ascent onto a rocky viewpoint we get a view of the whole valley, town, and lakes. We then descend to Pyramid Lake and picnic on a small island, just as visitors have done since the railway first arrived in Jasper in Although this walk is very popular it is also one of the longest on our journey through the Rockies - but don't worry, there are short-cuts. 23.9km, 350m Ascent/Descent, hours. Day: 10 - Jasper (B) The Valley of the Five Lakes is another ice-age remnant of ridges, rolling hills and lakes. This attractive route goes through forests passing five lakes, but keep an eye out for the only emerald green lake on our tour! As we approach Jasper the route reaches a viewpoint over the Athabasca River and the town. To get back into town we have to cross the railway. Luckily there is an underpass as some of the long freight trains can take a quarter of an hour to pass by!! 15.8km, 300m Ascent/Descent, hours. Day: 11 - Jasper (B) There are many interesting locations to visit near Jasper and during the tour we will include one or two of them depending on the weather. Maligne Lake and Canyon- Malign Lake is a scenic gem, backed by lofty mountains. From the lake we walk to the summit of Bald Hills, where the view is stunning as we have got above the treeline. 11.8km 480m Ascent/Descent 4 hours Those not wanting to do this walk can take a 1.5 hour cruise on the lake to Spirit Island (cost not included). On the way back we stop to do a short walk down a dramatic gorge which the Malign River has carved through limestone rock. The Whistlers and Edith Cavell Meadows - The Whistlers, Jasper's local mountain, tops out at 2466m and gives an exciting summit day walk with marmots keeping a keen eye on us. We take the cable car (Jasper SkyTram) to 2250m and then we make our way from the cable car station to the summit. 4km, 200m Ascent/Descent, 1.5 hours. Please note that the cable car is not included in the local transport costs on this holiday. The cost for the cable car is around $45. Your afternoon can be spent spending extra time at the top of the Whistlers or your leader can do another shorter walk with those wanting to. The Whistlers is often combined with the Edith Cavell Meadows walk. This is short, but climbs up from 1700m to 2100m to give stunning views of the Angel glacier and lake. 4 km 400m Ascent/Descent 2.5 hours Day: 12 - Banff (B,D) It is now time to head to our final centre of Banff. Our route will be along the Icefields Parkway one of the classic Canadian road journeys with so much to see along the route. Stop options can include the Athabasca Falls, the Columbia glacier, a 2 hour walk up to Parker Ridge to view the North Saskatchewan glacier, Peyto Lake and Lake Louise. Lake Louise is justly famous for the view, but you will have to share it with lots of other tourists, mostly taking selfies! Day: 13 - Banff (B) Our first full day in Banff will be spent exploring the Hoodoos and Tunnel Mountain. Although today's walk may have a slightly suburban feel initially, this disappears as we follow the banks of the Bow River where in September it is likely you will see or hear male Elk bugling. What is a Hoodoo we hear you say? They are the rock spires or fairy chimneys as the locals call them. After a picnic overlooking the hoodoos we return to the fringe of Banff and go up Tunnel Mountain. The views from Tunnel Mountain are tremendous, with the sheer faces of the peaks encircling Banff framing the valley of the Bow River and distant Lake Minnewanka. Look out for the irony in the name Tunnel Mountain! 16.2km, 300m Ascent/Descent, hours Day: 14 - Banff (B,D) Today we finish at the top of the grade as we head for Sulphur Mountain! There is a well graded but steep zigzag path to the top of the gondola, where a well-earned coffee can be had. Those who don t want to walk up can use the gondola to whisk you to the top. Here it is possible to do a short but dramatic walk along the ridge to a viewpoint in one direction, and then to follow the main tourist board-walk to multiple viewpoints and the old cosmic ray station on the highest point (Sanson s Peak 2305m). The descent is one an old access road, a gravel track that descends gently to the valley. The return route passes the Cave and Basin site, the original hot springs discovered in Banff, and the origin of National Parks in Canada. 17.5km, 842m Ascent / 970m Descent, 6.5 hours Please note that the cable car is not included in the local transport costs on this holiday. The return cost for the cable car is around $65. If you decide to take the cable car down this will be half price but you cannot get a one way ticket up you will have to buy a return should you wish to ride up and walk down. Day: (B) The late flight home means that there is plenty of free time in Banff. There are several short trails to follow, museums to visit and of course plenty of shops for those last minute souvenirs for loved ones. It is even possible to hire canoes for a trip up the Bow River. We then travel by road to Calgary Airport for the return overnight flight to London.

5 Walks & Excursions The walking involved on this holiday will be at a reasonably energetic pace on moderate terrain. Several routes take only a few hours, but a number of full day walks (average 5-6 hours) are also included. Climbs are not usually excessive and walking is normally on good paths. The emphasis is on sightseeing in Vancouver although the north shore offers some fantastic walking opportunities. On arriving in Manning Park in superb walking country we will have some excellent wildlife spotting opportunities. Jasper and Banff are both world renowned amongst outdoor enthusiasts. Optional Excursions A range of local excursions and activities may be available to book at your destination through a local operator. We have no involvement in such activities or excursions which are not run, supervised or controlled in any way by us. Your contract will be with the local activity supplier and we accept no responsibility for their actions or omissions. Leaders Evening Briefing Each evening, your tour leader will discuss with you the programme for the following day. If you do not wish to join the organised group programme, please let the leader know. Local Transport Costs All local transport costs in conjunction with the advertised activity programme are included in the holiday cost. Small Groups Group Size Coming from all walks of life your fellow travelling companions will share your desire to discover great things and have a wonderful holiday. Enjoy their infectious enthusiasm, cameraderie and great dinner conversation. Our maximum group size for guided walks between grade 5 and grade 8 is 18 persons. Tour Leaders Your tour leader makes the world of difference to your holiday and ours are as passionate about discovering the world on foot as you are. They're resourceful, organised and widely travelled. They will handle all the local administration and other needs that might arise to ensure that you don't have to worry about planning your days and you can enjoy your holiday. Although leading group holidays, they won't forget that every group is made up of individuals. Each tour leader has their own individual style, talents and professional backgrounds and all are trained, qualified, experienced and dedicated to making your holiday as enjoyable, interesting and inspiring as possible. On most holidays of 7 nights and over, the tour leader will have one day's break a week, enabling you to have a 'free' day too! Personal Expenditure Budgeting for Extras When budgeting for your holiday, you will need to consider drinks, any meals not included in the holiday price, non-included entrance fees, optional excursions you may choose to participate in locally and any souvenirs or additional services such as laundry. A general guideline for lunches and drinks is per person per day. Tipping Tipping is widespread, and expectations are fairly high. The drivers accompanying the tour on transfers and excursions tend to be mines of information relating to all aspects of local life and the country, and are also excellent travelling companions. Should you wish to tip our Canadian colleagues, you may wish to consider an allowance of C$3 per day for each of our drivers. In restaurants it is customary to add a 15% tip to the bill throughout North America. It must be stressed however that such tips are at your own discretion.

6 Travel Details We fly from London Heathrow to Vancouver, and Calgary to London Heathrow with Air Canada or British Airways Travel within Canada will be by road. The transfer time from airport to hotel is approximately 45 minutes by road. If you are joining and leaving in Canada it is assumed, unless you have advised us otherwise, that you will meet the party at the hotel in Vancouver and leave the party at the hotel in Banff. If this is not your intention please let us know, in writing, at least five weeks before departure. For all those booking a flight or rail inclusive holiday, details of your travel arrangements and baggage allowance will be confirmed in your travel documents, sent to you approximately 10 days prior to departure. Personal Details Check When confirming your booking, we provide you with a Personal Details Check form. This is to ensure that we have an accurate record of the information you have provided us such as your passport details (if relevant), date of birth and any other important detail necessary for us to properly manage your holiday arrangements. When you receive this, please check the details, complete any missing or pertinent information and return it to us as soon as possible. Land Only If you are joining and leaving at your holiday overseas we assume, unless you advise us otherwise, that you will join and leave the holiday from your hotel. Although airport transfers are not included for those making their own independent travel arrangements, if you wish to join the group at the overseas airport, depending on your flight arrival time, you may be able to be included on the group's transfer. Please contact us at least 5 weeks before departure for more details. Please note that your flight must arrive within 30 minutes of the group flight to be able to join the group transfer. We also need your flight number, arrival time and departure point so that the group leader is able to meet up with you. If you wish to organise your own flights from a non- UK or provincial airport or travel by rail or car to your holiday destination, 'no-travel' reductions are often available. Please contact us for details. Before finalising any independent travel arrangements, please check with us first - especially if doing so 12 weeks or more before your intended date of travel. If you do intend to join your holiday locally please do tell us at least 14 weeks in advance. Passports and Visas British Citizens don't usually need a visa to visit Canada for short periods. If you have a different type of British nationality or intend to travel for a longer period, check entry requirements with the Canadian High Commission. When you arrive you will need to be able to show that you have enough funds available to support yourself during your stay. Under Canada's Electronic Travel Authorization (eta) program, citizens from countries other than the United States (U.S.) who do not need a visa to enter Canada, will need to obtain an online authorization before flying to Canada, unless otherwise exempted. THE ETA IS ONLY CURRENTLY REQUIRED IF YOU ARE FLYING INTO CANADA - IF YOU ARE ARRIVING OVERLAND THEN IT IS NOT A REQUIREMENT. Canada is making every effort to ensure that eta does not greatly inconvenience affected travellers. The application process will be quick and easy at a low cost of only $7 Canadian dollars and will be valid for up to five years. The earlier travellers get their eta, the sooner they will benefit from knowing whether they have been pre-screened to enter Canada.

7 eta is a convenient authorization that is electronically linked to a traveller's passport, which means travellers will need to travel with the same passport they used when they applied for and obtained their eta. General Passport & Visa Advice It is a good idea to carry photocopies of the personal details pages of your passport. 9 Footwear Lightweight waterproof walking boots with a good moulded rubber sole (such as Vibram or similar) and a deep tread which provide ankle support are strongly recommended and may be essential for some walks. We recommend that you either wear your walking boots or shoes or pack them and some waterproofs in your hand luggage as in the unlikely event that your hold luggage is delayed, you will still be able to participate in the holiday programme. Kit List Outdoor activities are always more enjoyable if you are prepared. The following list is a basic guideline that will enhance your experience. Please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have. A basic kit list is likely to include: - Waterproof jacket (Goretex or similar) and trousers - Lightweight, quick drying trousers - Several polo shirts, T-shirts or specialist walking shirts - Fleece jacket - Comfortable walking socks - Warm hat and gloves (if appropriate) - Sun hat, sunglasses, lip salve and high SPF sun block - Swimwear (if appropriate) - Day sack (25 litre capacity) to comfortably carry the kit you'll take out on your days activity - Strong polythene bags to keep the contents of your daypack dry - Water bottle(s) - at least 1 litre capacity - Basic first aid kit (plasters, blister treatment, antiseptic etc) - Insect repellent - Plastic container and reusable cutlery for your picnic lunches - Walking/trekking poles (if applicable) Trekking Poles Many of our clients find walking poles hugely beneficial when walking. They can both reduce stress on the knees and aid confidence. If you use them please make sure that you have the rubber tips covering the sharp metal points. There is increasing evidence that the bare metal tips are damaging footpaths both in the UK and abroad. 11 Currency The currency in Canada is the Canadian Dollar. Banks and ATM machines are widely available and most hotels accept credit cards in Canada. Electricity Electricity in Canada is supplied at 110 Volts at 60Hz. If you wish to use electrical equipment you will need a two pin North America style adaptor with flat pins. More information can be found at Health No compulsory immunisations are required for visits to Canada. You should be up to date with the usual immunisations recommended in the UK. You might like to consider immunisations against Tetanus and Diphtheria. Health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you inform yourself from a professionally qualified source on, and comply with, such requirements at least 6 to 8 weeks before departure.
