You re invited to become a Franz Josef KIWI RANGER! It s a fun and interactive way to et to know this special place

Welcome! The Franz Josef area stretches from the tops of the high mountains to the sea. In this one area you ll find all kinds of different ecosystems, from alpine tussock and icy glaciers, to swamps and lagoons, ancients forests and wild beaches. It s a very special place, and no matter what the weather is like, you ll find lots of fascinating things to explore and think about! Let s Get Started! My Name Where I live Other national parks, reserves and sanctuaries I ve visited What do I need to become a Franz Josef KIWI RANGER? Do the first and last activities, and... If you are aged 6 and under choose 5 activities in total If you are aged 7-9 choose 6 activities in total If you are aged choose 7 activities in total But don t stop there why not do them all! KIWI RANGERS are people who Care about Franz Josef region Care about plants, animals and conservation Want to find out what make this place special To receive your badge, take this completed KIWI RANGER booklet to the Department of Conservation and their Franz Josef Visitor Centre where a ranger will check it and award you your badge!

Activity 1 Getting Out There! Go for a walk on one of the many and varied tracks in the Franz Josef region. It s a great way to really get to know the place! Which track did you walk? What birds and insects did you see or hear along the way? What did you enjoy most about your walk? What other tracks have you done in the Franz Josef Glacier region? Some of the best short walks around Franz Josef Glacier and Ökärito include: >> Peter s Pool and onto the Waiho Bridge >> Ökärito Trig Walk (awesome views of the Southern Alps on a clear day) >> Sentinel Rock (on the way to Franz Josef Glacier Valley) >> Three Mile Lagoon Pack Track - Ökärito coastal walk >> Pakihi Walk (might hear kiwi at night) >> Glacier Terminal Face >> Tatare Tunnels Track >> Callery-Waiho Track >> Lake Wombat walk >> Terrace Track >> Alex Knob Track For more details ask at the Visitor Centre... REMEMBER! Be prepared for rain, sun, cold and heat, maybe all at once! Also, you can do many of the following activities at the same time.

Activity 2 Fill Up Your Senses At The Glacier Walk to a place where you can see the glacier really well Peter s Pool, Sentinel Rock, or all the way up to the Glacier Terminal Face are all great spots. Find a safe and comfortable spot to sit, and open up your senses to all that surrounds you Look, listen, smell and feel to help you complete the following sentences! The colours of the glacier look The water flowing from the glacier sounds The weather today feels The air today smells Use words or draw a picture to describe how you feel at the Glacier today... DID YOU KNOW? Glacial ice appears more blue on cold and wet days. This is because the pressure on the ice in a glacier more dense so that the red light waves are absorbed and blue are reflected. Wetness allows the colours to be seen more clearly by washing off the snow and dirt from the ice surface.

Activity 3 Rock on! Ever wondered why the rivers that flow out of glaciers are such a dirty colour? It s because the river is full of ROCK FLOUR! Glaciers make this naturally when the movement of the glacier forces the rocks buried under the ice to rub up against other rocks! While on the Glacier Walk pick up two river rocks and rub them together to create your own rock flour! See how fine it is by smearing some on your finger pad you should clearly see your own unique finger print. What colour is your rock flour? Try to make some fingerprints here Now choose 3 special rocks that each fit snugly in the palm of your hand. Make sure they are all really different, in colour, texture and make up. Describe with a sketch or words their unique characteristics: Rock 1 Rock 2 Rock 3 See if you can match at least one of your special rocks with those at the rock display at the Visitor Centre. Also check out the rock striations nearby. These striations are stripes scratched onto the bedrock as the glacier slowly grinds its way down the valley!

Activity 4 Kiwi Recovery: Real Life Kiwi Rangers! Rowi, the Ökärito Brown Kiwi, is the rarest species of all Kiwi with fewer than 400 alive today. Check out the kiwi display at the Visitor Centre to find out more about these very special birds and also to answer the following questions... How are rowi tracked by Department of Conservation rangers? What does ONE stand for? O N E What is the main predator for rowi in the Ökärito Forest? Why are rowi so vulnerable to predators? There s a lot currently going on in the Kiwi Recovery Programme. Check out the board for the latest results and work out... >> How many viable eggs have been rescued? >> How many chicks are currently being raised at Christchurch s Willowbank Reserve? >> How many juvenile chicks have been returned to Ökärito Sanctuary? DID YOU KNOW? Each breeding season Rowi lay 1-3 eggs with each egg weighing 400 grams! This is so big that it usually takes up most of the body! For more on the Kiwi Recovery Programme visit

Activity 5 It s Raining, It s Pouring! It s the rain on the West Coast that makes this place so special! Lots of rain means lots of snow in the mountains to feed the glaciers. It also makes the forest around here some of the lushest in the world mm 8000mm 6000mm Check out the rain display at the Visitor Centre to find out how much rain falls each year in the Franz Josef Township. Draw the missing bar on the graph >> 4000mm 2000mm 0mm Ökärito Township Glacier << How many people of your height would have to stand on top of each other to match the amount of rain that falls each year on the Glacier? Why do you think there is more rain up on the glacier? If it s raining today, try working out how much rain is falling by placing a straight-sided cup outside for as long as possible. 1. Record the start time and location 2. When you are finished, record the finish time 3. Also record how many millimeters of water collected 4. At this rate of rainfall can you work out how much rain would fall in a 24 hour day if it stayed at this rate? EXTRA! At the display, see how the natural siphon rain gauge can measure rain super accurately. Also, visit html to find out how to make your own rain gauge and weather station cm

Activity 6 Being Safe And Acting Responsibly Safety in the outdoors is important and travelling to the glaciers has some added risks. On your walks you ll see the signs shown below. Match the sign to the correct safety message. DANGER! ROCK FALL: Rocks fall from the glacier and valley walls daily. Even small rocks can seriously injure or kill you. Stay on the track. SURGE WAVE: Ice dams may suddenly release large amounts of water. Sudden river surge can drown you. Stay on the track. FLOODING: Rain can cause streams to rise rapidly with little warning. Sudden flooding can drown you or strand you in the riverbed. Stay on the track. ICE FALL: Ice blocks larger than a campervan fall from the glacier daily. Ice fall can seriously injure or kill you. Do not go beyond the barrier. Other things are also important when spending time in our national parks including... >> don t litter >> no dogs, as they can destroy kiwi and other birds >> be prepared, by taking warm clothing and food on outings in case conditions quickly change << Choose one of these messages, or one of your own, and design your own sign to encourage people to act responsibly

Activity 7 Scavenger Hunt During your time in the Franz Josef Glacier Region look out for these plants, animals, places and things. Circle each as you see or hear them. Complete at least one row, but don t stop there - see if you can find them all!! Ökärito Obelisk Sun - Rä Tree Fern - Punga Draw Your Own! Trap Fantail - Piwakawaka Kötuku - White Heron Rain - Ua Glacier Waterfall Sandfly - Namunamu Gold Panner Suspension Bridge Defiance Hut Striated Rock Harakeke - Flax Astelia Miro Makomako - Wineberry Broadleaf - Puka

Activity 8 Peter s Pool Reflections Of The Past Peter s Pool is one of the most wonderful spots to visit and view Franz Josef Glacier. On a still day it is beautifully reflected in the pool. The pool was discovered in 1894 by Peter Westland. Make the short hike and use the informative panel to answer these questions... What kind of pool is it? How was Peter s Pool formed? Why is Peter s Pool slowly disappearing? How old was the person who discovered it? Many people have come here to gaze in wonder Sketch or write below your impressions of what you see and hear DON T STOP HERE! If it s been raining a lot lately you might find some icebergs floating down the river not far from here. Continue along the track down to the Waiho Bridge and see if you can spot some ice flowing by!

Activity 9 Okarito This special coastal place was an important kainga (village) for Mäori with plenty of fish, wildlife and plants around. During your walks on the beach or the local tracks look for things people might have used or eaten while living here? Draw them below, and write down all the ways you think they could have been used: #1 #2 #3 Possible Uses: Possible Uses: Possible Uses: Out on the Ökärito Wharf are displays that will help you find out... What is the name for a traditional food gathering area? Which two birds is Ökärito famous for? Hint: one you might see looking out over the lagoon, the other you might hear in the forest at night! Gold fever came to Ökärito in the 1800 s When was the town established? When did Captain James Cook first sail past Ökärito? Hint: check out the obelisk memorial near the campground entrance for more... DID YOU KNOW? Once 4000 people lived at Ökärito - that s the same size as Picton! There were 25 hotels, 3 theatres and 2 banks. Now there are about 30 people, no banks or theatres, but there are some holiday homes!

Activity 10 Plants In The Rainforest While walking along a forest track stop and and look into the forest. Spread your arms as wide as you can, and count the number of different types of plants you can see. >> Now draw your two favourite plants here Write down why you chose them, and what makes them interesting Do you know what they are called? Write down your answer here. You can also ask for the Visitor Centre counter copy of the book on native plants to help identify them... FOREST FACTS: The main type of forest in the Franz Josef area is podocarp. This lowland rainforest is comprised of trees such as rimu (red pine), totara, kahikatea (white pine), miro (brown pine), mountain toatoa and kawaka (NZ cedar). Podocarps are a type of conifer, the males grow cones and females the seed and fruit, which help to feed the forest birds. Also, in the glacier valley in the summer you may see lots of tall red flowering trees, these are the magnificent southern rata.

Activity 11 Our World Heritage Park Franz Josef Glacier / Kä Roimata o Hine Hukatere has been a part of Westland National Park for more than 50 years and a World Heritage site for over 20 years. That s a lot of protection! Imagine what this place would be like if it hadn t been made a national park. Look around you and write down three things that might be or look different from today: What are three things you can do which keeps this place looked after and protected for people in the future? DID YOU KNOW? >> People have been able to do guided glacier walks here since about that s 100 years of glacier guiding! Glacier guiding was started by Alex and Peter Graham who were born in Ökärito in the 1880 s. >> 250 years ago, if you were standing where the glacier carpark is now, you d have been under about 500 metres of ice! >> In the busiest time in summer, up to 6000 people visit the glacier each day.

Activity 12 Ka Roimata o Hine Hukatere. In the Visitor Centre displays and on some panels on the Glacier Valley Walk, you will find the story of Hine Hukatere and how Franz Josef Glacier was formed. Use these and the following list of words to help fill in the blanks in the story below. Hukatere mountaineering pastimes hills expedition slipped cried tears frozen grief Franz Josef Glacier Hine, the avalanche girl or adventurous Maori maiden, who loved above all other, frequently persuaded her lover, Wawe, to accompany her on her escapades into the. On one such the unfortunate Wawe, who had never been as fond of climbing as his sweetheart, and plunged to his death. Heartbroken, Hine Hukatere her were by the gods as a memorial to her, _ thus forming Ka Roimata o Hine Hukatere. _ Just as your own name has its own special meaning so do the names of places. Long ago many of the places here were named by Mäori to commemorate special events and traditions. Look at the Signposts From the Past display and try matching the present name with its original name and also the meaning behind it... PRESENT NAME Lake Ianthe Ökärito Waitangitaona MÄORI NAME Mäpourika Waiau Matahi ORIGINALLY NAMED AFTER The Mäori Rangatira (chief) Karito The sandy formation of the riverbed and its waterways Fast flowing or smoky water Lake Mäpourika Waitangi Tahuna Black Pine Waiho Ökärito Karito s daughter

Check out the displays on Sentinel Rock and also at the Visitor Centre to find more about glaciers!

Activity 14 Mountains To Sea Westland National Park is New Zealand s only national park that spans from mountaintop to sea-shore. This means the park has a range of different habitats which in turn suit different plants and birds. The three main habitats are Alpine, Forest and Coast. Draw a line to match up the following birds with their descriptions and also the type of habitat it usually lives in... I have a white tuft under my throat and have a huge vocal range when singing. I especially love to eat the nectar from flax flowers! I am New Zealand s hardiest native parrot, and find my food in the harshest of environments! Please don t feed me! I am a friendly bird with a fan-like tail. To catch insects I do air acrobatics through the trees, yum! I have long legs and elegant white feathers, you might see me feeding in Ökärito Lagoon There aren t many of us, but we can swim in fast moving rivers and fly over high valley passes. I sniff out worms and insects with my looong beak. We can t fly but our females lay huge eggs! Whio Blue Duck Kea Tui Kötuku White Heron Piwakawaka Fantail Oystercatcher ALPINE FOREST COAST I build my nest on the beach and have a red bill, pink legs and orange eye rings. Kiwi

Activity 15 Ranger Interview Rangers do lots of things, from radio-tracking rare birds, trapping pests, community conservation education, weed busting, hut and track maintenance, operating mountain radios, keeping people safe on the glaciers and in the glacier valley and answering everyone s questions! What questions do you have about their work? Write them down and when you get the chance, ask a ranger for their answer! Q1 A1 Q2 A2 QUICK FACTS ABOUT FAULTLINES AND FRANZ JOSEF! >> The New Zealand Alpine Fault runs the length of the Southern Alps, including straight down the main street of Franz Josef Glacier township! >> This fault line is where the Indo-Australian and Pacific plates collide - it s even visible from space. >> The two plates are slipping past each other rock types in Otago to the east are the same as those found to the west of the fault in Nelson. This is because land in the northwest corner of the South Island once sat next to the land in the southeast corner. >> Scientists say that really big earthquakes happen about every 300 years along the Alpine Fault. It s been about 300 years since the last big one in the area, which means scientists are expecting another one soon! >> The pressure from the fault is making the mountains grow 1-2 cm each year. That s about as fast as your fingernails grow. However erosion is wearing the mountains down at the same speed, so they aren t getting any bigger.

Activity 16 Becoming a KIWI RANGER It s time to return to the Franz Josef Visitor Centre OR head to the ferry to get your certificate signed and be awarded your KIWI RANGER badge.
