2 I. COUNTRY OVERVIEW On the coast of East Africa, Tanzania is bordered by Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo, 1 Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique. Its population is about evenly split between Muslims and 2 Christians. For decades, Tanzania was the continent s largest refugee-hosting country and continues to be a place of transit for illegal migrants. Of its 52 million inhabitants, approximately ⅔ are under 25 years of age. Malaria is the leading killer of children under 5 years of age, HIV is the main cause of adult mortality, and the risk of contracting a major infectious disease is very high in the country. Tanzania s fertility rate is incredibly high and efforts to reduce the maternal mortality rate have stalled due to inadequate maternal healthcare and education. In addition, over 40 percent of 3 the population resides in chronic food-deficit regions. II. COUNTRY STATISTICS Population: 52,482,726 Under 15 years old: 44.06% Urban population: 31.6% Official language: Kiswahili or Swahili 4 Population below poverty line: 28% 5 Children under age 5 suffering from chronic malnutrition: 34.7% out of 1,000 female adolescents (aged 15-19) are mothers III. CONVOY OF HOPE IN TANZANIA Convoy of Hope started working in Tanzania in 2013 with Children s Feeding and Women s Empowerment programs. The Empowered Girls program was launched in Tanzania, providing secondary school-aged girls with a safe environment to learn about life skills, discuss women s empowerment and health issues, and address harmful cultural practices. In 2016, 1,540 young women were a part of the program. The Agriculture program was launched in Children s Feeding Convoy of Hope has been feeding children in Tanzania since Currently, there are 1,750 children enrolled in the program. We work with school and community leaders to build sustainability programs so that they will continue feeding programs long after we phase out of a particular location. 3 developed several gardens and a greenhouse, installed biogas, and made kitchen improvements for efficiency. Women s Empowerment Program Micro+ in Tanzania started in After starting businesses in small shop management/ownership, animal husbandry and more, participants have seen an incredible increase in income. Women receive training, in-kind startup capital, and at least six months of weekly monitoring visits from our staff and volunteers. They also launch savings and lending groups, giving them a social means of saving and investing, access to capital for borrowing, and a medium for sisterhood and support. Empowered Girls clubs train girls on how to be confident, goal-oriented leaders who will soon change their communities and the nation. There are thousands of girls that have and are currently participating in the weekly training sessions and fun confidence-building activities, such as debates, essay contests, fashion shows, and recording songs. It is operating in 10 schools in 3 districts of Tanzania. Agricultural Program The Agriculture program uses gardening and livestock/poultry keeping to boost incomes and quality of life. Using a contextualized adaptation of our Micro+ model, participants receive training and seed capital, as well as access to extension services and additional trainings. The program teaches organic pest control methods, business and marketing skills, gardening techniques with minimal water use, chicken keeping for profit, and other topics. 4 IV. TRAVEL TIPS Immunizations: These immunizations are recommended but not required for those traveling with Convoy of Hope overseas. If a vaccine is required for entry into the county, you will be notified. The decision to obtain these vaccinations is an individual choice. These recommendations are based on a planned itinerary and the assumption that adults have received standard US childhood vaccines of DPT (Diphtheria/Pertussis/Tetanus) and Polio. Vaccines do not need to be repeated unless expired or a booster is necessary. These recommendations are generic and need to be tailored to your personal health history.please take these recommendations to a travel clinic or your personal physician to receive the vaccines. All immunizations should be documented on a yellow International Certificate of Vaccination card. These cards can be obtained at your doctor s office or county health department. A directory of travel clinics in your area may be accessed at web site: More information about vaccines may be obtained from the Centers for Disease Control web site : Standard Health Recommendations for Travel to Less-Developed Countries Eat only cooked foods hot to the touch. Avoid eating at street vendors. Eat only cooked fruits/vegetables and or fruits/vegetables you can peel, pare or cut yourself. Drink only purified bottled water with seal intact produced by a reputable company, or boiled and filtered water, or carbonated beverages, or tea and coffee made with boiled water. Do not accept ice in beverages if the source of the water is unknown. Do not swim in fresh water. Protect yourself from mosquito, fly, tick and other insect bites. Bring an extra supply from the US of your prescription, or over the counter medications. When possible, use seat belts when riding in the car; use helmets when riding motorcycles or bicycles.

Departure: The majority of our group will meet at the HUB airport and travel together to Tanzania. Please plan to connect with the team at the gate. I will send you a list of those you will be traveling with a week before your departure. Luggage: Airlines allow 2 pieces of checked baggage at 50lbs each on economy and 70lbs each on business. In addition, passengers may also carry free of charge, items of personal effects for use in flight, as listed; A handbag (Laptop bag), pocket book or purse, A small camera and/or a pair of binoculars, A reasonable amount of reading material for the flight, One laptop without accessories and attachments. Passport: Please make sure you have your current passport along with your immunization record, available when applying for your visa. Please bring color copies of your passport with you. 1 for your carry-on, 1 for your checked luggage, and 1 for each hotel you will be staying in... Visa: You will need to complete a VISA application at the airport when entering Tanzania. This is a simple process that you will complete before retrieving your luggage. You will need to have $100 in cash to cover the cost of the Visa. Dress: No suits or dresses are required. Casual attire is fine. Short sleeve shirts or polos, and jeans or lightweight long pants are recommended. No shorts please. This will help prevent bug bites. We suggest you throw in a hat, a light jacket because the evenings can be chilly, and comfortable closed toed walking shoes. If you buy a new pair, make sure that you break them in before you travel. Tennis shoes are also fine. Power Outlets: It s important to note that E. Africa s electrical outlets and voltage is different than in the U.S. Voltage: Instead of the U.S. standard, voltage in E. Africa is V. Some items that you may want to plug in may need a transformer to allow for safe use. Please check your item to see if it s safe for V, or if it s multi-voltage, meaning V will work. Many newer electronics can handle both without a transformer or voltage converter, but it s necessary to confirm this. These are called dual voltage appliances. Primary Socket: Typically, places in E. Africa use a British style socket. Therefore, to plug in items, a plug adapter is necessary. You may reference the photo below to see a sample of the typical (British BS-1363) socket. Your Items: A Quick Guide The Electronics that require V would require a plug adapter and a step-down transformer. Internet and any store that sells travel items should be able to help those with further questions. Multi-voltage appliances (laptops, phones, etc.) should simply require a plug adapter. Although we will be staying in safe accommodations and Internet is available in the hotel, we do not recommend bringing laptops or other expensive equipment. If you would like to bring money to purchase souvenirs, you will be able to exchange your cash, not traveler s checks, for local currency in Tanzania. The ForEx Bureau requires denominations of $100 bills newer than Older or smaller bills may be rejected or exchanged at a lower rate. (Note: All other expenses are covered in the cost of your trip) While we will be eating three meals each day, you may want to bring some snacks or protein bars. 7 Your carry-on bag can be a real lifesaver, especially if your luggage gets lost. Here is a sample list of items you might want to pack in your carry-on: Passport Color copies of Passport International Certificate of Vaccination Airline ticket and travel documents Change of clothes essential in the event your checked luggage is lost or delayed Itinerary Pen and Pencil Address book, journal or small pad of paper Camera, batteries, chargers IPod, MP3 player Laptop if desired, but not recommended Money belt or pouch Sunglasses Anti-bacterial hand sanitizer Prescriptions Toiletries include items in your carry-on that could not be replaced at our destination. Other items can be sealed in a larger zip-loc bag and placed in your suitcase Pack an organized carry-on bag using layers a layer of clothes, then electronics, more clothes, and then any heavier items. This will help transportation security officers see what's in your bag. Innocent items can actually appear to be potential threats in an X-ray image; simply by the way they're packed. Carry-on bag Liquids : 3.4 ounce (100ml) bottle or less (by volume); 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. Consolidate bottles into one bag and X-ray separately to speed screening. VIII. PACKING YOUR SUITCASE During our visit you can expect average high temperatures of degrees during the day and average lows around 50 degrees at night. Dress: No suits or dresses are required.
