21 20 VISITING PEMBROKE HERITAGE PROJECT I SPY! Scientists often need to count the populations of living things in a given area. In this activity Xru the scientist will need your assistance to count the number of populations in the area indicated by the teacher. Team up in groups of five and get ready! For this activity you will need a tape measure and a quadrat. The following are some steps to guide you: 1. Take a good look around you and list 10 dominant living things that you spy. 2. Choose one animal and one plant population that you will be counting. Check with the other teams so that each team does a different population and therefore you will know more about the variation in biodiversity on site! 3. Using a tape measure, measure as accurately as possible the area that you will be studying, example 6 x 6 metres. 4. Guess the number of each of these two populations and write it down in the table. 5. Using a 1m quadrat, throw it randomly on the ground within the area of study. 6. Count the number of the living organism under study and insert the data below. 7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 five times. Counted populations in quadrat numbers Population 1 Our Guess Total (add columns 1+5) Population 2 1. For both populations calculate the following: Total population 1 x Total area under study (example 36m 2 ) 5m 2 (if quadrat used five times) ESTIMATE FOR POPULATION 1 ESTIMATE FOR POPULATION 2:
