Boureau, Parks Canaa General Information Weather, terrain, remoteness an willife encounters present the greatest an most consistent hazars that you will encounter as a visitor an hiker in the MNP. It is important to be prepare for the particular challenges of hiking in a remote northern park an to remember that: You are responsible for your own safety Help is a very long way away! It gives them a chance to assist you with your trip planning an it also helps them in their efforts to better unerstan visitor use of the park for management purposes. SAFEY Polar Bears & Black Bears When you are in the orngat Mountains, you are in polar bear an black bear country with high likelihoo of encountering a polar or black bear uring your hike. You must review a safety vieo on travelling in polar bear country before you begin your trip. he best way to enhance your group s safety is to travel with an experience Inuit polar bear guar who is permitte to carry Carry effective an approve bear eterrents (crackers, screamers, air horns) an know how to use them. A lightweight electric, alarme fence is also recommene for enclosing your campsite at night. Carry a satellite phone an be familiar with its proper use. he Iriium satellite phones are the most reliable for use in the orngat Mountains National Park area at the moment. Visitors shoul practice no trace camping practices. Please trea lightly on the lan as you explore the orngat Mountains an leave the park s natural an cultural treasures unimpaire for future generations. his inclues: Leaving rocks, plants, an other natural objects such as bones an caribou antlers as you fin them. Leaving unisturbe any artefacts or features that look even remotely like an archaeological site. hese sites inclue tent rings, graves, blins, fox traps an foo caches an can be almost iniscernible to the untraine eye. You may come across stone cairns or inuksuks on the lanscape. hese shoul not be isturbe or estroye as they may be of historical or cultural significance. It is important that you o not buil cairns, or other markers on the lanscape. Such markers etract from other visitors sense of iscovery an wilerness experience. hey can also be misleaing an potentially angerous to others. Cooking Use a reliable cook stove an be prepare to cook in winy conitions. he availability of woo is limite to scarce riftwoo along the shoreline an slow growing shrubs in valleys. Do not buil fires on moss or tunra to avoi the risk of an unergroun fire. Managing waste Pick up an pack out all your litter or burn it when possible. Minimize the use of soaps an, when necessary, use bioegraable soap. Resiual soap shoul not be umpe in lakes or streams. Visitors are encourage to pack out their human waste whenever possible or bury it uner rocks away from main travel routes an water sources. If travelling near the coastal areas of the park, it is acceptable to eposit your waste in a shallow pit below the high water mark. Drinking Water Fresh water is available from countless streams an pons in the orngat Mountains. While we are not aware of any contamination with water sources, visitors are avise to fine filter (<0.5 microns), treat (ioine or chlorine in warm water) or boil all rinking water. Fishing Fishing for arctic char in the rivers an in salt water within park bounaries an ajacent to the park bounaries is permitte with proper licenses. Currently, the require licenses are the Newfounlan inlan fishing licenses for non-resients who wish to fish in inlan waters. Any non-resient is require to have a guie while fishing in inlan waters in northern Labraor. No licenses are require for non-resients fishing in the ocean. Resients of NL o not require a license for arctic char in freshwater or the ocean. Bag limits are 2 per person per ay. You are only allowe to have 2 ays total catch in your possession. D.
