1 GUIELINE TITLE Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) Guidelines For Correctional Centre Code Bags: Contents, Use, Cleaning And Restocking RELATE OCUMENTS June 17, 2013 SOURCE: Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) APPROVING AUTHORITY Infection Prevention & Control Operations PRACTICE SUPPORT OCUMENT SPONSOR Infection Prevention & Control If you have any questions or comments regarding the information in this guideline, please contact Infection Prevention & Control at PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE To adhere to Infection Prevention and Control standards within Alberta Provincial Correctional Centres when cleaning and maintaining code bags. APPLICABILITY This guideline applies to AHS staff and other persons acting on behalf of AHS within Alberta Provincial Correctional Services. GUIELINE 1. amage to Code Bags 1.1. The Alberta Provincial Correctional Centre manager or designate shall be notified of loss or damage to a code bag or loss of major contents. 2. Contents of Code Bags 2.1. Single-use medical devices are preferred for use, rather than items that require reprocessing Store only clean or sterile supplies in the designated clean compartment of the code bag 2.3. Supplies should be grouped and packed inside plastic boxes or bags to: maintain cleanliness, prevent damage to packaging and prevent leaking from solutions The sharps container should be keep in a secured upright position 3. Use of Code Bags 3.1. hen possible, code bags should be placed on a clean, dry surface, off of the floor hen possible, medical devices used in a code should be single patient-use Reusable contaminated items should be placed in an impervious plastic bag or container for appropriate decontamination immediately after the code. These items can then be removed from the code and transported to a location where further cleaning and disinfection can be performed.

Routine Cleaning of Code Bags and Equipment: Always use clean hands when handling clean equipment and supplies Code bags and contents shall be cleaned monthly on a routine basis, and when visibly soiled Code bags and contents shall be inspected weekly uring weekly review of code bags, all supplies should be checked to ensure they have not become contaminated or expired. Unused soiled or contaminated supplies shall be discarded All code bag pockets, seams, straps inside and out are cleaned with an Alberta Health Services approved disinfectant. ( e.g. Percept, Virox or Cavicide ) As part of routine, monthly cleaning, all bag contents and parts are to be cleaned using Alberta Health Services approved products. Plastic storage bags are to be replaced hen the code bag is clean and re-stocked, place a label on the bag indicating that it is CLEAN Cleaning and Restocking After Each Use: Always use clean hands when handling clean equipment and supplies. Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn for decontamination including gloves and eye protection. Consider use of a gown to protect the uniform Interior or exterior compartments, part of the code bag or non-critical reusable medical devices which are visibly soiled, contaminated with blood and/or body fluids shall be cleaned using a 2 step process: Remove visible soil from the item using friction and a cloth moistened with approved disinfectant. Repeat this step once code bag is dry to provide disinfection. Allow to air dry. iscard any used single use items iscard any sharps into sharps container. Replace sharps container when fill line is reached or when ¾ filled. Ensure excess garbage, paper or equipment is discarded after use isposable, single use medical devices shall be discarded after use or if sterility is compromised (e.g. package is torn, soiled or wet).

Any opened solution shall be labeled with the expiry date and discarded before or on that date Replace portable suction if used. Used suction equipment is to be sent for cleaning and reprocessing or discarded if single use. Replace filter and canister Reusable non-critical medical devices shall be cleaned, then disinfected using an approved Alberta Health Services product such as, but not limited to, Percept, Virox or Cavicide wipes, and allowed to air dry prior to returning to the code bag or use on another patient. Examples of these devices include but are not limited to the automatic external defibrillator (AE), clip board, stethoscope etc Reusable medical devices that cannot be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected as per manufacturer s instructions shall not be used for another patient until appropriate cleaning and disinfection can be achieved in accordance with Alberta Health Infection Prevention and Control Standards. NOTE: Proper PPE shall be worn for decontamination including gloves and eye protection; consider use of a gown to protect the uniform hen the code bag is clean and re-stocked, place a label on the bag indicating that it is CLEAN.
