11 2 local f lora & fauna Rattlesnakes and black widow spiders can be found in the Central Okanagan. Northern and southern Okanagan ecosystems meet in the Westside, allowing visitors to experience vastly different terrains and species. It is a unique locale that not only has several sensitive ecosystems and at-risk species, but is also home to many plants that are special to the Syilx-speaking eoples of the Okanagan First Nation for their traditional healing purposes. Bitterroot The Okanagan Valley was recently recognized as one of the most ecologically diverse regions of Canada. ue in part to this exceptional diversity, the valley has more threatened, endangered and rare species than any other part of British Columbia. Some of the threatened and endangered species on the Westside and the Central Okanagan Valley include: ainted Turtle, Western Rattlesnake, Kokanee Salmon, Great Blue Heron, Gopher Snake, California Bighorn Sheep, Badger, Flammulated Owl, Lewis Woodpecker and the Townsends Bigeared Bat. The indigenous peoples of the Westside are the Westbank First Nation eople who are part of the Syilx-speaking eoples of the Okanagan Nation. lants and animals that have special purposes and cultural significance to the Westbank First Nation eople include: Black Bear is culturally significant and is considered a high chief and the eldest of the four food chiefs (the other food chiefs are Salmon, Saskatoon and Bitterroot). 12 volcanic explorations There is a story behind the prominent local landmark, Mt. Boucherie, and it begins over 5 million years ago during the Tertiary Age when much volcanic activity took place. Mt. Boucherie is likely the roots of a volcano that has been worn down by eons of erosion and several glaciations. What we now see is the feeder pipes through which lava flowed on it way to the surface. The last lava making its way through the feeder system congealed in place forming a type of rock that was more resistant to erosion than the enclosing rock. It is estimated that it used to stand over 2 metres high, but due to time, natural elements and erosion, it now rises 417 metres above the lake with its highest peak, 748 metres, at the northern edge. The volcano is dormant and poses no risk of eruption. Some of the best wine in the Okanagan comes from the grapes that are grown at the base of Mt. Boucherie. Soils have been shown to affect wine chemistry, quality, flavours and aromas and the unique composition of the soil in this area reflects the complex underlying geology of the land. While exploring the volcanic history of the Westside, stop by one of the wineries and discover how this ancient volcano has contributed to the development of our wine industry.
