For many people, retirement doesn t bring instant relief. Even family can put you under pressure. Your children may only live around the corner, with you always on notice for babysitting, gardening, repairs. All grey nomads feel the need to get away from it all. This could be the first time you have enjoyed time with each other since you were married. Don t waste it. Once you re out on the open road you will rediscover your partner and all the things you love about them. There is plenty of time to talk and reconnect. Read those books you have been going to read if I only had time. There is always a second-hand bookshop in every town and for some reason they are always close to a bakery. While you re out travelling around take a diary, notebook or an address book you ll meet some wonderful people and want to keep in touch. You could be heading in the same direction and want to stay together for a few days or weeks and travel together. They could be from the east coast, so on your around-australia trip the next year call in and have a catch-up. They can be your local tour guide. You ll meet some wonderful people and want to keep in touch. Going out and enjoying yourselves is what being a grey nomad is all about. Picture: Tourism Western Australia While out and about ask people who have come from the direction you are going in what s best to see or avoid and places to stay. They will generally be very obliging. This can save money and time, plus you won t miss anything. Just remember to slow down. 4 4 March 2, 2017 Planning and preparation vital Don t leave home before you re truly ready, says DAVID KELLOCK Do some research on the places along the route you ll travel to make your journey less stressful. Apps such as WikiCamps are handy as is a GPS but you can t go past a map spread out on the table for the planning stages. Always call into visitor centres along the way they are usually staffed by locals who are a mine of information. Planning can be exciting, so treat this as part of the project and put a lot of research into it. There s nothing worse than getting home to hear from others that you missed a special spot. When online search for local festival dates and markets and check out State holidays. When designing an itinerary, try to cover about km a day to reduce fatigue. Allow for regular rest stops and aim to arrive at your destination in the mid-afternoon. Keep a few days in your itinerary free you never know where you ll be glad of the extra time in a spectacular location. Base the clothes you pack on what you expect from the weather. The Bureau of Meteorology website is good for tracking weather while you re away. Don t pack too many clothes, you can always buy more when you re away. Check that all equipment is in good working order. The gen set might have worked six months ago but does it work now? The same goes for fishing gear, lights, fridge, fire extinguisher and so on. Come and start your outback adventure at Yalgoo; a region that offers stunning seasonal wild flowers from late July. Dalgaranga Meteorite Crater and abundance of native wildlife such as Wedge Tail Eagles. Visit Jokers Tunnel or Paynes Find Gold Battery to see the only working Gold Battery left in Western Australia. Accommodation at Yalgoo includes the Yalgoo Caravan Park or at the Yalgoo Hotel It s always a good idea to have your vehicle and caravan serviced before you go. Make sure the bearings are checked, if these collapse you re stuck on the side of the road with an expensive recovery bill. Travelling light is kinder on your vehicle and cheaper on fuel. If you didn t use it on the last two trips take it out. Many nomads follow the rule that every item must have multiple uses. Take a first aid course it costs less than $100 and less than a day of your time but could save your life. It s important to know how to treat injuries and bites if you re far from help. After your course, you ll have a better knowledge of what you need in your first aid kit. Buy one for your vehicle and one for your caravan. If you ve bought a four-wheel-drive for the first time, a 4WD training course will give you confidence and teach you skills such as how to free a bogged vehicle. If you break down on the road, don t panic. Most main roads have a vehicle passing by at least a couple of times an hour. Flag someone down and explain your situation, they might have an answer or could GOLD PROSPECTING? What a great idea! Get everything you need at Reeds Prospecting Supplies Phone GBSR take you to the nearest road house. It s advisable to leave someone with your rig. And move it off the road for safety. Roadhouses generally have a recovery vehicle. If it s a tilt tray they can take both car and caravan in tow, otherwise they will come back for the caravan. Again have someone stay with the van. There are numerous and not very expensive roadside assistance packages from vehicle and caravan insurers that cover these costs. It s wise to book ahead at caravan parks, particularly in school holidays and the peak nomad season between May and September. Most parks just need a deposit, others require full payment closer to the date. Keep a vehicle and caravan checklist to make sure you ve packed everything but be mindful of the weight you put into both. Your caravan has an aggregate trailer mass, the most it can weigh unhitched. When hitched up, your towing vehicle and caravan have a gross combination mass again, this is the maximum weight allowed. It s a good idea to learn about these and take your rig over a weighbridge several days before departure. There are vast areas of WA to explore, so preparation is a key element in keeping safe. Escorted Fully Packaged Short Breaks Goldfields and the Prospector Rail Journey Goldfields to the Coast Free camping can keep your costs down. Picture: Tourism Western Australia Budgeting makes cents DAVID KELLOCK has some suggestions for saving money It s possible to keep your budget under control and still have a holiday to remember. Travelling can be expensive but there are ways to keep costs down. The biggest outlay is often on fuel. There are some petrol price apps available but they often rely on users updating the information. In country areas, the choice of service stations can be limited even in towns. You can bypass roadhouses by having an extra tank fitted to your vehicle. Some caravan park chains offer discount cards and can be worth joining. Be aware the most fuelefficient towing speed is about 90km per hour. WA has a good selection of free camping. Get a copy of the guide to rest areas and roadside amenities brochure from the Main Roads website, which has maps showing a selection of facilities on highways throughout the State. Again, apps such as Wikicamps have good information on free camping. Just remember to leave every site as you found it. National Park entry requires a Park Pass. Choose your pass carefully an annual pass at the concession pass price of $55 may be better value than a one-month pass for $44. When booking a tour through a visitor centre, you may get a group rate if you can band together with a few other people. When in larger towns, you may find pubs to be quite competitive in terms of food and drink prices and most will have midweek meal specials. Snooze before you cruise Fatigue is a silent killer on WA roads but it can be avoided by taking regular breaks from driving. A roadside stop could be a rest area, a scenic lookout, information bay or road train assembly area. Signs on the highway indicate facilities such as parking, toilets or picnic tables at each stop. A rest area often provides dump points for effluent, facilities for people with disabilities and a 24-hour stop for caravans. If you pull into a shared rest stop, pull to one side so trucks can easily drive through. If you see a driver by the truck, say g day. But if the truck is locked up and the driver is sleeping do not disturb them. And be courteous when it comes to noise from generators. If you re going to be on the road for a while, a UHF radio is a great investment. Monitor channel 40 so you can speak to truck drivers and help them get around you. Be A UHF radio can help trucks overtake. mindful this is a truck/semi/road train drivers channel so casual conversations are not the correct protocol. If there s a truck behind you, maintain your speed, the driver will be able to judge how long it ll take to get past you. Once they begin to overtake, slow down to ease the process. Once the truck has safely passed give your headlights a couple of long one-second flashes to indicate they can return to the left lane. Visit mainroads.wa.gov.au. 6 6 March 2, 2017 The way to go A string of adventures await on the drive north. It s a matter of deciding where you want to go, says DAVID KELLOCK. From Perth, a choice of routes merge around Dongara. The Midlands Road branches off the Great Northern Highway after Bindoon and travels through Three Springs and Mingenew. It s quite scenic, especially during wildflower season but may have to be shared with wide loads going to Karratha. The Indian Ocean Drive is truck free and passes through coastal towns such as Cervantes, Jurien Bay, Leeman and Green Head with the fascinating Pinnacles Desert at Nambung National Park an early bonus on your drive north. Along the North West Coastal Highway route, roads lead off to great little towns worth a stop on your journey. Kalbarri is blessed with great weather and has spectacular river gorges and a dramatic coastline. In the Shark Bay area, Denham is a great place to relax and to fish while Monkey Mia is known for its dolphins and it s not unusual to see turtles, manta rays, whales and dugongs. On the way in, stop at Hamelin Pool and check out the stromatolites and spend an hour or two at Shell Beach. Carnarvon is a great base for visits to the Kennedy Ranges and the blowholes that are 75km north of town. Further north, have a look at Quobba Station, Red Bluff and Gnaraloo with their magnificent beaches. At Minilya Roadhouse, it s worth turning left to Coral Bay and then on to Exmouth. Ningaloo Marine Park and North West Cape gives you access to one of the world s great ocean paradises. Shallow lagoons and deep offshore waters are home to colourful corals and hundreds of fish species. Around WA s shoulder, Karratha has modernised thanks to iron ore. Here you can base yourself and travel to Dampier, Point Samson and Millstream. The Pilbara has spectacular and ancient land formations such as Hamersley Range. Book ahead for best outcome A sing-song around the campfire. Pictures: Tourism Western Australia DAVID KELLOCK Our winter is peak season for the Pilbara and Kimberley as travellers head for warmer climes. Wherever you choose to stay, planning and bookings are essential. First work out exactly where you want to go on the way north and how long you d like to stay for. Visitor centres are great sources of information and they can often take bookings for tours and accommodation. Apps such as Wikicamps and ParkfinderWA from the Department of Parks and Wildlife can be very useful and caravan park chains, including Big 4 and Top Parks all have their own booking systems and discount card. These discount cards come with a cost but if you stay within their system you ll re-coup your money in savings. Facebook is another source of information and recommendations from fellow caravanners. There are many groups that post park reviews, good and bad, or you can ask for recommendations, by posting questions. You will get many people with helpful reviews and a lot are current as they may have just returned along this route. Another option is turu.com.au, which lists pet friendly parks and has prices, park reviews and online booking. Caravan parks nearest to the attractions or beaches are the first to fill but don t despair if you miss out. When all spots are full, many local shires open up their ovals to accommodate caravans. Heading north and looking for a park that is clean, green and friendly? Then you must book Wintersun - ranked #1 in Carnarvon (Trip Advisor 2014, 2015 & 2016) for good old fashioned customer service and clean facilities. This family operated and pet friendly park features refurbished amenities, valet parking, shady grassed sites, bowling green, regular meal nights and live entertainment. 7 sevenwesttravelclub.com.au 7 The Kimberley offers adventure. Picture: Greg Ferguson At Port Hedland you can see the massive ore ships and snake-like ore trains. From Port Hedland to Broome places to stay include Cape Keraudren, Pardoo Station, Eighty Mile Beach and Port Smith. All are excellent for fishing. Broome s a big town with everything you ll need to base yourself for a trip along the Cape Leveque Road or to just relax in the winter sunshine. From Derby you have two options when travelling to Kununurra the Great Northern Highway via Fitzroy Driving in the North West can be challenging after rains. Crossing and Halls Creek or the Gibb River Road. If you re travelling the Gibb, drive to the conditions and reduce your tyre pressure. The road is well maintained and improves every year. You can go from Derby to Windjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek and on to Fitzroy Crossing but check with the visitor centre in Derby for road conditions on the Great Northern Highway. Kununurra is a well-serviced town on the banks of the Ord and another good base with everything you need. An aerial tour over the town and Lake Argyle will show you just how vast the lake and agricultural areas are. On the way back to Perth keep left along the Great Northern Highway, south of Port Hedland, and take the inland route through Newman. This route takes you the closest to Karijini National Park a breathtaking place. It s worth booking to stay in the park, allowing you to spend a couple of days exploring the gorges. From Newman, the drive can be covered in a few days. But slow the pace down if the wildflowers are blooming and if you wish to explore historic mining towns such as Meekatharra, Cue, Mt Magnet and Paynes Find. Handy advice DAVID KELLOCK Be mindful of the impact you can have on bush, rivers and animal habitats. Many free camping places and national parks require you to be self-contained with grey and black-water tanks. More towns and caravan parks have dump points, so dispose of waste responsibly. Don t use rivers, lakes or stock tanks to bathe with soap, shampoo or to wash your dishes or clothes. Use biodegradable soap and a bucket. Fires are a great element of free camping but be aware when open fires are banned. Don t douse a fire with dirt, put it out with water. There have been many people who have walked through a fire that has been slowly burning under the dirt. Fires should be kept small and if possible bring your own wood or only use the dead wood around your site. Don t feed wildlife. It will encourage animals to seek easy meals and may make them sick. To minimise your own chance of illness when using public barbecues, place baking paper on the plate before cooking. The heat goes through the paper and cooks food without it coming into contact with the plate. It also makes cleaning the plate easy just dispose of the paper. If carrying fuel or water the colour coding of fuel containers is a good means of identification. Remove bush ticks by applying liquid soap or Vaseline on a cotton ball and holding it in place for about 30 seconds. 8 8 March 2, 2017 Journey into relationship zone Working together to ensure a long and happy road trip is essential, writes EMMA CHITTY Following the sun to the tropics and being on the road with a loved one sounds idyllic retiring to a life of wandering the highways and byways and exploring all the beauty that WA has to offer. Of course, it can be all these things but to keep travelling as pleasant as we imagine it will be, it s important to ensure relationships stay healthy on the road. Travelling like this is a fantastic thing I can t express enough the benefits of the lifestyle, just being on the road and experiencing new and amazing places all the time, says Cindy Gough, founder and owner of a grey nomads website. Doing a caravanning trip or a road trip is a positive adventure, and something you experience together the whole thing brings you together as a couple. Excitement in planning your holiday, as well as talking about expectations before it begins, is of utmost importance. Working together towards a shared goal and plan for the trip is a great opportunity to deepen connections between partners, says Frederika Davies, psychologist and manager of clinical training at Relationships Australia. It s important to have a conversation before you go about what each person wants and expects and when planning where you re going and what you re doing, be aware of what is important for each of you. If the shift from a life filled with work commitments, children, grandchildren and social outings to one spending 24 hours a day with your partner evokes some sort of anxiety, you re not alone. Now, the routine is gone that leaves room for a possible lack of other things to turn to, and intensifies the time together, the us space, that at times may feel difficult and challenging, Frederika says. If you re living your normal life at home and you re getting frustrated with your partner, you might have a chat to a close friend, go out into the garden, or go for a walk those things are not necessarily going to be available when you re on the road. Frederika recommends John and Julie Gottman s Six Skills for Constructive Conflict when seeking to improve dealing with disagreements. Highlights of these skills include speaking in terms of I and not you, stating clearly what is being felt and why, accepting influence from your partner, acknowledging the existence of two separate realities, and compromise. In addition, it is worth learning to recognise when one or both partners are overwhelmed with emotion during conflict, and thinking about how best to soothe the situation by taking breaks. It s important to stress that conflict is inevitable there will always be times where what one person wants is going to be in conflict with what the other person wants and that is not the problem, Frederika says. The development of a problem, or not, is in how two people have a conversation about it. It s important to have a conversation before you go about what each person wants and expects... and be aware of what s important for each of you. Frederika Davies If settling conflict effectively is one side of the healthy relationship coin and an important one putting plans in place to discourage a conflict developing is surely the other. Having been on the road extensively herself, Cindy says one of the most important things to consider is how much you and your partner are planning to do within a period of time, recommending a slower itinerary to make the most of your experience and keep you both relaxed. When we first started travelling we thought we had to do everything, but rushing just leads to stress and conflict the most important thing is to take it slow, she says. Just sitting at camp can be relaxing. Picture: Stephen Scourfield 80kms of WA's most spectacular coastline. 9 sevenwesttravelclub.com.au 9 Long trips together can strengthen connections. Picture: Getty Images We found it better once we did less instead spending more time at the camp relaxing, reading books or getting a newspaper. You don t need to do everything, and sometimes your best days will be just sitting at the camp, talking to the guy in the old Land Cruiser about his life story. If you find yourselves feeling isolated from the rest of the world, and particularly if there are no fellow travellers at your site, staying in touch with loved ones at home is another great way to keep you feeling as though you have other company in turn, possibly preventing unnecessary conflict. Whether you write s or a blog, it s very therapeutic, Cindy says. Even if you re not directly speaking to someone, it s almost as though you are, which can take the pressure off the one-on-one thing. We all know that looking after yourself is also one of the most effective ways to look after your relationship with your partner a concept true both at home and on the road. Practising mindfulness, working through meditation exercises, keeping up a regular exercise regime and bringing along music you enjoy listening to are just some of the possibilities to keep yourself grounded during long days in the car, or quiet days at camp. If you are looking for something to keep both driver and passenger engaged during the drive, downloading podcasts to a mobile phone before leaving may be worth the time. Topics available range from news to health and from comedy to interviews; plus they are free, plentiful and discuss a range of ideas sure to spark thought and give you something to talk about. If you would prefer some fiction, looking into several books you may both enjoy and listening to them in audio-book form is your best bet. When spending time at a camp site, Cindy suggests developing hobbies, or revisiting old ones, as a great way to spend holiday time and keep your mind occupied. Sometimes a trip around Australia can lead to an interest in photography, as well as things such as fishing, bushwalking or craft, she says. Try to think of hobbies that you can do as a couple, and individually as well bushwalking may be something you do together, for example, but you may choose to do craft and fishing separately. Ultimately, extra time out with your partner while travelling our beautiful State has all the elements for a wonderfully enriching time as long as everyone is doing their best to keep themselves, and their partner, as content as possible through the journey. When you re out caravanning, you re free from the trappings of every day life this can offer an opportunity to get to know each other in different ways and deepen connections, Frederika says. For people who ve been caught up in raising a family and having careers now they re on this journey together and they ve got some time to turn towards each other instead something they haven t had the time and space to do for a long time.... thegreynomads.com.au, relationshipswa.org.au BOOK NOW 3 Spacious Rooms - Free WiFi Continental Breakfast BBQ & Guest Facilities KALBARRI EDGE RESORT Experience Kalbarri s newest luxury resort Kalbarri Edge, you ll love it! info@kalbarriedge.com.au Call John or Sheila or visit $429 per couple - That s less than half price Includes: 3 nights for 2 in luxury king bed spa suite Bottle of wine in your room on arrival FREE restaurant breakfast daily Book 2 specials and enjoy 6 nights Conditions apply, valid Some dates may be unavailable #17W /3

Dr Duncan-Smith also recommends carrying a brief medical history, as well as the telephone numbers of your GP and local pharmacy just in case there are any problems and the doctor treating you needs extra information. If you require medication and are able to store and transport it as required, it is worthwhile getting about a one-month supply at a time. On the assumption it isn t a medication that needs constant review, carry a repeat script and you can have it filled while on the road, he says. Other considerations before leaving may include dental and optical checks and a first-aid course. If you have the time and the inclination, a first-aid course isn t going to do any harm and of course, carry a first-aid kit with you as part of your normal inventory, Dr Duncan-Smith says. Dr Teresa Ballestas, principal medical adviser for the office of the Chief Health Officer, says it is of utmost importance to ensure medications are still taken at the correct time. People can become complacent when they re relaxed and on holiday, which can sometimes lead to them forgetting their regular JLVSO P lanning for your time on the wide open road may be close to complete the route, the stops, the activities but the most important thing to keep on top of is your health, and many of us are guilty of leaving this until the last minute and making it a last priority. Taking care of health matters before leaving and staying healthy on the road doesn t need to be difficult. Here, we show you where to start. The optimal thing is to see a GP before leaving and have a full check-up, especially if you haven t had one for a while this way, you can make sure there are no impending medical problems and that you re The ONLY WAY to experience one of the greatest natural wonders of the world This small family owned caravan park is walking distance to beautiful Cable Beach and lovely restaurants. Dr Ballestas also urges travellers to be aware of mosquito-borne diseases and take appropriate precautions. Wear long, light-coloured and loose-fitting clothing. Mosquitoes can still bite through clothing that is tight against the skin, she says. It is also worth applying effective mosquito repellent to exposed skin lotion and gel formulas containing Sandwiches make an ideal lunch. Australian Medical Association WA vice president Mark Duncan-Smith diethyltoluamide (DEET) or picaridin are most effective. In case of emergency, there are two issues worth thinking about: ambulance cover and means of communication. Long country ambulance rides can be expensive and Medicare doesn t cover them, Dr Duncan-Smith says. Most private insurance does, but if you don t have full private insurance be sure to consider your extras options which are much cheaper and will typically include ambulance cover. If travelling to destinations without a decent telephone signal, is it essential to take an alternative with you for example, an essential position indicating radio beacon device. EPIRBs sell for about $250, and are worth their weight in gold if you find yourself in trouble. Once the medical essentials are covered, we can and should start thinking about keeping ourselves not only safe, but healthy on the road. David Bryant, Catalyst Dietitian owner, encourages people to plan ahead and take food along to ensure they stick to healthy eating while on the road. If you do have cooking and kitchen facilities in the Bring all medications. Picture: Getty Images campervan, really stock it up at the start of the trip, he says. If not, take a good quality esky with a seal and plenty of ice. These days there are a lot of good frozen meals, and frozen vegetables, that you can keep in the freezer, plus the non-perishables such as dried fruit and nuts. If you are making regular stops at roadhouses each day, Mr Bryant recommends making healthy decisions and making sure you re hungry before you eat. As well as eating healthily, staying fit and active on the road is important especially for those driving long stretches. Make regular stops to stretch out the body, buy a fitness tracker to keep engaged or choose to explore each new town on foot. 12 12 March 2, 2017 Top drops add to satisfaction Whereever you end the day, you can still enjoy a good glass of wine with your dinner, says RAY JORDAN The intrepid grey nomad is often faced with long stretches of road between drinks. Dealing with this problem requires some clever planning if you want to have a glass or two of your favourite wine with the evening meal. Sure, there are plenty of areas where it s just a matter of dropping into a cellar door, and this can be a rewarding experience. But the reality is these are in areas that make up only a fraction of the ofttravelled roads around this country. The first thing to remember is that you don t have to spend a lot to get quality drinking. The quality of wine available in Here are a few tipples for the trip Houghton white classic 2015 ($15) MadFish sauvignon blanc semillon 2015 ($18) Watershed Shades sauvignon blanc semillon 2015 ($19.95) Deep Woods chardonnay 2015 ($20) West Cape Howe riesling 2016 ($19) Oxford Landing chardonnay 2016 ($9) Vasse Felix classic dry red 2014 ($19) Paul Conti Roccella grenache shiraz 2014 ($18) Miles From Nowhere cabernet merlot 2015 ($18) Goundrey Homestead cabernet merlot 2013 ($17) Yalumba Galway malbec 2013 ($18) Fifth Leg rosé 2016 ($18) Australia selling for less than $20 a bottle is outstanding and when you factor in the discounting which will take the prices in many cases to less than $10, you can get some unbelievable buying for about $100 a case. The style and type of wine is a consideration. Remember you are driving so it s not a bad idea to look for wines that are slightly lower in alcohol. Big reds with alcohols of 15 per cent can have a lingering effect into the next day. Apart from the chances of blowing over the limit if you hit the road early, a few more than you should have had can also make you tired not what you want when driving. Of course, in most cases you will only be having a couple of glasses at night, which poses the next question how to look after the unfinished bottle. The screw-cap closure has certainly made things simpler and more convenient but won t stop oxidation. The best thing is to put the unfinished wine, red or white, in the fridge as this will slow oxidation. The other useful tool is called a Winesave, which allows you to squirt a small amount of inert argon gas into the bottle before sealing. The wine can last weeks this way. Check out your local liquor store for these which will cost you about $26. Now to the style of wines. To some extent this depends on where you are travelling. But most will be following the sun to get away from winter so slightly lighter, fresher wines will generally be the go. And as a general rule the bigger more tannin-extracted reds don t seem to handle resealing as well as the lighter ones. For the whites, I would go to blended whites such as semillon sauvignon blancs, lighter chardonnays, riesling and perhaps one of the alternative newer wines such as vermentino or fiano which are just beautiful as aperitif wines at the end of a long day s driving. I would make sure there was a good supply of rosé. This wine has become popular and is perfect as an aperitif, with an ice block if you wish, or with seafood or fresh pasta. For the reds, I would include pinot noir, cabernet merlot blends and grenache with a fruity tempranillo for just about every style of meat dish. The other thing to consider is that because you re going to be bouncing around on sometimes rough roads, this can affect the wines. For this reason, don t take a lot of older wines as these will certainly be knocked about by the drive and maybe even the temperature variations if you are heading off into hotter areas. So leave your best cellared wines until you return home. You don t have to spend a lot to get quality wines while travelling around Australia. Don t take a lot of older wines as these will certainly be knocked about by the drive. 14 14 March 2, 2017 Adding flavour to fire JENNIFER JORDAN shares how to make the most of caravan cooking Simple flatbread Everyone expects damper but this is amazingly easy. It can be used for nibbles and leftovers can be frozen. MAKES 8 Ingredients 350g self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder pinch salt few grinds black pepper tsp cumin seeds (optional) 350g natural yoghurt 1 4 cup olive oil Method Mix flour, baking powder, salt and cumin together in a bowl. Spoon in yoghurt. Mix well. Use your hands to form into a smooth dough then shape into a rough ball. Use extra flour as needed. Flatten on a floured surface and cut into eight pieces. Roll into rough, oblong shapes. Heat your hotplate with 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil. Cook one for about 2 minutes on high, lower heat, turn, cook another 1-2 minutes. They should puff slightly and look a bit charred. These are delicious as is or topped with lamb, chicken, roast vegies or prawns. Adding a dollop of yoghurt is also good. Freedom on the road, travelling north. Nothing to think about but where to pull over and enjoy the scenery. Stunning clear, blue water and the whitest sand dotted along the coast. Soak up the magic of pristine bushland and wild rocky outcrops. One of the great joys of the nomad life is cooking on a camp fire. Well, for the converted anyway. But it s hard to go past the barbie or caravan kitchen. They are so well-equipped these days. But what to take on the journey? Norm, a seasoned grey nomad, was happy to share a few tips. He suggests pre-cooked meals to keep you going for a few days until your first stop. Try lamb curry, eggplant moussaka, chicken cacciatore, beef bourguignon. All can be frozen. Get your butcher to Cryovac your meat and poultry so it will last a few months. Why not give kangaroo fillet a try? It s lean and packed with protein and great for the barbecue. Food supplies to think about can include dried pasta, rice, quinoa, barley, whatever your preference for all are good staples. Add tins or jars of artichokes, asparagus, olives, anchovies, tuna, red capsicums, capers and tomatoes. Tinned corn, baby beets, lentils, chickpeas and semi sun-dried tomatoes make a simple salad. A good extra virgin olive oil is great for drizzling over dishes. And don t forget a red wine vinegar to add to your dressing. Canned pulses are good for baked vegetables such as pumpkin, sweet potato, potato, onion, garlic, eggplant, carrots and capsicum. Parmesan and cheddar have long lives. Add them to salad, vegetables and pasta. A few dried herbs and spices won t go astray. For the more adventurous take potted fresh herbs such as parsley, mint, basil and oregano. As you get to each destination, check out local markets for fresh produce. Catch the local fish or buy it from locals. It is so easy to pan-fry your fish fillet on a grill plate or in a frying pan. Season the fish then heat olive oil or butter in your pan. Add the fish and sear it on high for a few minutes. Lower the heat, turn the fish and cook for a few more minutes. Fish is cooked when the knife goes easily Blackened fish An easy spice mix to make before you leave. Make a big amount, keep it in a jar and use it on fish, chicken or lamb. through the flesh at the thickest part. Add a squeeze of lemon, a bit more butter and a few capers. For something more fancy, use a teaspoon of miso paste on fish or meat. It has a wonderful flavour and keeps for months in the fridge. Make a quick soup with packet stock. Mix miso, chicken strips, dried noodles and fresh vegetables such as spinach, broccoli and mushrooms. For a treat, try balsamic glaze and vino cotto, a syrupy grape juice. They keep for months without refrigeration and are delicious drizzled over barbecued meats, chicken and even roast vegetables. A grill plate, big frying pan and big pot are essential. A Dutch oven is handy for the camp fire and slow cookers are great after a long day s driving. Make your travels a culinary adventure. William Yeoman A Life in Parts Bryan Cranston Narrated by Bryan Cranston This is a fascinating warts-and-all memoir by the star of TV s Breaking Bad. Cranston tells of his early brush with acting under his father, a struggling actor and director, and how it planted a seed which would only much later bear fruit when, after his father disappeared, Cranston found himself stranded in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He d been attempting a cross-country motorbike trip and had only an old copy of Hedda Gabler to read and was reminded of his original calling. So, Anyway... John Cleese Narrated by John Cleese Famous for such diverse projects as Monty Python s Flying Circus and Fawlty Towers, Cleese here narrates his equally diverse life, from a nerve-racking first public appearance, at St Peter s Preparatory School at the age of eight and five-sixths and an endlessly peripatetic home life to his hamster-owning days at Cambridge and his time as a teacher who knew nothing about the subjects he was expected to teach. Funny and sad in equal measure. Small Great Things Jodi Picoult Narrated by Audra McDonald, Ari Fliakos & Cassandra Campbell A newborn child s parents have forbidden Ruth, a nurse who has 20 years of experience, to come anywhere near their baby. But when the baby goes into cardiac arrest, Ruth sees no option: she must act. Then the baby dies and Ruth is charged with negligent homicide. The New York Times bestseller, Picoult s gripping novel grapples with the moral complexities surrounding life, death and the treatment and care of infants. Cold Earth: Shetland Book 7 Ann Cleeves Narrated by Kenny Blyth During a rainy Shetland day, a landslide smashes through a house thought to be uninhabited. Inside, Detective Jimmy Perez finds the body of a dark-haired woman wearing a red silk dress. He s determined to discover her identity and when it later emerges she was already dead before the landslide hit the house, Perez becomes even more obsessed with finding out who she was and how she died. This is Cleeves at her atmospheric best.
