Quality of Life and Safety in Bern In 2007 Bern was rated 9th worldwide for quality of life based on 39 criteria by the German magazine "DER SPIEGEL". Other rankings show similar values. Bern is one of the safest cities worldwide. In the Mercer rating, Zürich, Bern and Geneva share rank 2 worldwide, topped only by Luxemburg. In the international ECA rating, Bern and Kopenhagen get the top rating for international business people, and safety plays an essential role for this rating. However... also in Bern the Police asks you to pay attention to pickpockets. Especially late at night, also in Bern assaults and robberies happen on the street. There is illegal drug consumption (the area around the Reithalle is known for this), and where there is illegal drug consumption, there is crime. The Grosse Schanze (where we will have our tent) and areas around the main railway station have been hot spots, but due to interventions, the situation has improved. This is not to frighten you (again: Bern is one of the safest cities worldwide!) but to ask you to use common sense and caution even here.

Shorter hikes around the city and near Bern As promised, here are some hints for hikes around Bern.

2 Shorter hikes around the city and near Bern As promised, here are some hints for hikes around Bern. There are plenty more, but these are my favored: Gurten-Round-Hike: About 2 hours from the valley station of the Gurten train station (you get there by train from the main station by S3 to station Wabern or by tram 9 to Gurtenbahn). Pretty steep up to the Gurten, then flat on top and slowly down via the old hamlet of Gurtendörfli. With clear weather: great view into the mountains. If you take the train to Gurten top, it's approximately an hour. Of course, the Gurten is also worth a visit by train without hiking (see below). There is an annual open air festival on the Gurten. Along the river Aare: For those who like it flat. You can start in the middle of the city, for example at the Marzili below the federal capitol, and continue as long as you like, till Thun (30 kilometers). There are frequent possibilities to get back to Bern by public transportation from villages along the way.

3 Erlach-St.Petersinsel: A very special flat hike on the traces of Jean Jacques Rousseau, who spent some time on the St. Peters Island in the lake of Biel. One hour one way. You may want to look for boat connections for one way. The fastest connections from Bern to Erlach via Ins (leaving always at.08 after the hour, back from Erlach.29 after the hour) take less than an hour. 4 Sightseeing Flights A young but reliable friend of Franz Caspar's son Cyril, Benjamin Zwicky, an experienced noncommercial pilot, offers sightseeing flights at very favorable conditions (cost prices), especially for participants with little time for sightseeing: On June 29 and July 3, it will be possible to go for a pleasure flight operated on a Piper Archer from the airport of Bern-Belp. In case of high demand or if the weather makes it necessary, the same could be organized on the three days in between the two dates (Thursd.-Sat.). The Piper Archer can carry up to four persons, that is, the pilot and three passengers. The three passengers' total weight should not exceed 240kg due to the aircraft's certification limits. One hour of flight will cost CHF. This price is for the "whole airplane" as it were and can be split between the passengers. The pilot is very flexible about the routing and can take on board requests by the passengers, but in order to give you some ideas, you will find four possible routes and the corresponding prices below. The flights are generally very dependent on the weather. Mist, too strong winds or other hazardous weather can force the pilot to make the decision to cancel the flights. Where clouds are concerned, it can be that the route to the mountains are passable but the sights in question (e.g. the Matterhorn) are in the clouds. The routes which lead to the mountains require very good weather conditions, whereas the routes over the lakes can also be flown if the skies are overcast. Flights: Eiger/Mönch/Jungfrau: 45min, CHF This route takes you due south-east, along the Lake of Thun and right in front of the mountain trio Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. You'll also catch a short glimpse of the Concordiaplatz and the Alps' biggest glacier, the "Aletschgletscher". Seeland: 60min, CHF Here, you will see the three lakes of Bienne, Morat and Neuchâtel, the Jura mountain chain and small towns such as Avenches, the ancient capital of Helvetia from Roman times, and Morat, where one of the most famous battles in Swiss history was fought. Lake Geneva: 75min, CHF In order to get to Lake Geneva, you will pass Lake Gruyère, where the world-famous cheese comes from. Around Lake Geneva you'll see both French and Swiss cities such as Lausanne, Evian, Thonon and Montreux. Matterhorn: 85min, CHF This flight takes you to Switzerland's most famous mountain, even though we actually share it with the Italians. It takes you across the Bernese Prealps and over an alpine pass into the canton of Valais. Not that we should tempt you to do a flight during the congress hours, but it's easy to get to the airport from the conference site: Take the airport bus line 334 at the main railway station, 22 minutes per ride, schedule (leaving about every hour except around noon). With or without earthing: Adaptors are available at shops such as Migros (e.g. inside the railway station, close to the conference site at Bubenbergplatz, or in the Marktgasse, close to most hotels. Or at department store Loeb near the railway station. Price 6-8 Swiss Francs.

6 And here are the restaurant hints. They will also be in the congress bag, but we provide them here for those who will look for a restaurant before arriving at the conference site. Cafés / Bars / Restaurants by areas Länggasse (from the university/conference site away from the station) Tingel-Kringel: Cosy café offering homemade cakes and cookies. For lunch you can also order delicious bagels prepared on the spot according to your taste. Gelateria di Berna: A genuine insider tip, this gelateria is in a small hidden alley, halfway up the Länggasse (crossing with Mittelstrasse). Traditional as well as unusual flavours available, and shockingly good. Don't leave Bern without having had a taste! Caffè Bar Sattler: This café (right next to the gelateria) is yet another piece of Italy. The offer ranges from coffee to cakes, and sandwiches to snacks. Everything is homemade, and service is very friendly. The last three are just across the stree from our department, but it's an unjustified rumor that it's mainly because of them that we like to go to work. Zebra: This small restaurant is an island of peacefulness, with a beautiful garden. There you can enjoy meditarranean cuisine made with fresh organic produce. Old town/altstadt O bolles: In a warm and peaceful setting, you can enjoy seasonal and regional cuisine. Also a nice place to have a drink at the of the day.

7 Progr / Turnhalle: This cultural centre is in the heart of the city. There, people party and dance in what was originally a gymnasium (Turnhalle). The Progr is also well known for ist offbeat cultural offer. The garden is also very inviting to relax and take a drink. Kreissaal: (Kreiss-Saal with 3s or German ßs would mean maternity room) Single malt and Jazz are the name of the game! Brasserie am Bärengraben: A brasserie with traditional French food next to the famous Bärengraben (Bear pit: place to visit!) and definitely the best sweets in town. Lorraine Du Nord: This unconventional venue hosts a restaurant, a bistrot, a bar, and a stage! There is something for every taste, be it music or food. Cafe Kairo: The basement of this colourful café hosts a variety of gigs. Besides, it also offers a nice terrasse and organic homemade cuisine. Matte (down at the river Aare) Dampfzentrale: This cultural venue, once a power plant, is right beside the Aare river. It features dance and music, and it also has a enticing menu, including barbecue in the summertime! Schwellenmätteli: Want to sip your drink with a direct view on the river? Well, this is the place to be. This louge bar, which includes a restaurant, is built right above the water. Marzilibrücke: This restaurant, which also features a beautiful garden, offers a varied and creative menu. On Sundays you may also enjoy a delicious brunch between 10h and 14h.

8 Services Swimming Marzili / Eichholz: A river that runs through the town, quite an opportunity! The Marzili is a neighbourhood by the Aare river where you have access to both a public pool are the river. A perfect spot to jump in and go with the flow! Hammam: If you find the river too cold and its surroundings too noisy, then the Hammam (steam bath) will perhaps be more of an option. The Bernese Hammam is a magnificent orthogonal building. Enjoy the oriental bathing culture to wash away the stress of the day. Outings The Rose Garden This is a Mecca for flower lovers, and besides the huge variety of flowers it features, this garden is located above the Old Town, thus offering a breathtaking view of Bern. The Gurten: Bern's "local mountain" is a great spot to have a glimpse at the Bernese Alps. A cable car will take you right to the top, and walking down will take you approximately one hour and a half. Zehndermätteli: Northwest of the city and next to the river Aare lies a small natural paradise: The Zehndermätterli. It is both a restaurant and a garden. It's a pleasant trip getting there and a great place for a day trip.

9 Entertainment Lichtspiel: The Lichtspiel is a mix between cinema and a museum. Just sink into a comfortable sofa amongst the old projectors and enjoy all kinds of movies: weekly programms, old music clips, amateur movies, etc. La Capella: This refurbished house used to be a methodist chapel. Today it hosts works of art and concerts. One of the best addresses for Cabaret acts! Further information Bern-Tourismus (local Toursit Office website) in German and English Printing computer files / photocopying is not possible at the conference registration, but very close and affordable in the main railway station building. Look for "Copyquick"! ( (German/French) Now have a good and safe trip!
