2 Greetings from the YMCA of the ROCKIES Program Department The Program Department welcomes you! During your stay with us, we hope you will allow nature to inspire your adventure. We offer a wide range of programs for everyone! Some programs are scheduled in advance and you will need to sign up, indicated by the in our program descriptions on pages Programs not requiring sign-up are described on pages 7-9 or are available during facility hours listed on page 11. On-line registrations are powered by Active.com at CONNECT 50 IT S ABOUT TIME One out of four children live in a single-parent household, and nearly half of these families live below the poverty line. Not only are these families impacted financially and emotionally, they are often unable to spend time together because of the parent s work schedule and household chores. With your help, the Connect 50 Program will connect 50 single-parent families to restful time away together at our Y. Please consider supporting a family through a donation at check-out or Thank you! Preventing Child Sexual Abuse Free Online Training 2 The YMCA of the Rockies has a vision of a world free of child sexual abuse. A world in which all children are loved, protected, nurtured and able to grow up healthy. To educate adults in the community about how to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse, the YMCA of the Rockies has joined forces with Darkness to Light, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization & creators of the award-winning Stewards of Children child sexual abuse prevention curriculum. Our Program Department building is called Sweet Memorial, and is located just west of the Administration Building parking lot. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about programs, come by or give us a call at ext EQUIPMENT CHECK-OUT & RENTALS - You can check out or rent a variety of equipment at Sweet Memorial: baby carriers ($50 deposit), baseballs & bats, bases, basketballs, billiards, board & card games, boccee ball, cones, croquet, daypacks, disc golf ($10 deposit per disc), foosball, footballs and flags, frisbees, horseshoes, ping pong, poly pong, puzzles, rubber balls, skittles, soccer balls, strollers ($10 deposit), team vests, trekking poles, volleyballs. All equipment must be returned to Sweet Memorial at least a half hour before it closes; check facility hours page. The only exceptions are board games and puzzles, which can be kept overnight. DAY PASSES - If you wish to use our facilities and are not staying on grounds at the YMCA of the Rockies AND you are not a member of the YMCA of the Rockies or another YMCA, you need to purchase a Day Pass wrist band at the Adminstration Building or Sweet Memorial: $20 - Adults age 13 and up $10 - Children age 6-12 FREE - Children under 6 YMCA members who are not staying on grounds, please come get a free wrist band. CAMPFIRES - Due to high risk of forest fires in the area, campfires are not always permitted on the YMCA grounds. When permitted, campfires are restricted to designated fire rings located throughout the property. Please call x1104 to check fire ring reservations. Cost of $20 includes use of the site and 2 bundles of wood. Firewood is for sale at Sweet Memorial, or at the Administration Building after Sweet closes, for $4.50 plus tax. 3

7 SCHEDULED PROGRAMS DETAILS ANIMAL DETECTIVE Age 4-10 (unless with a parent) Learn to identify the animals and where they live around the Y grounds. We ll take a walk outside to find clues the critters might have left for us to find. Meet inside Sweet Memorial. ASTRONOMY 1 1/2 Hours Explore the great unknown and take a closer look at everything from the circumpolar constellations to stellar objects, through our telescopes. Learn about the different phases of the moon and its mountainous craters. Program may be altered or cancelled due to inclement weather or cloudy skies. Meet at the Outdoor Amphitheater by Upper Cookout. BALL SPORTS 2 Hours Age 4+ Join us at the flagpole in front of the Administration Building. We ll have a huge variety of games to play, including parachute games, gaga, basketball, volleyball, horseshoes, kickball,wiffleball, and more! BASKETBALL MANIA Age 6+ Come play fun hoops games like Horse, Around the World, Free Throw Challenge, and many others. Meet at basketball courts. BINGO Join other guests for an hour of fun and prizes! Meet inside Sweet Memorial. BIRD BANDING 1 3/4 Hours Age 8+ (Ages 8-12 with an adult) Watch Scott Rachid, licensed bird bander, net different species of birds that come to Colorado in summer. Meet inside Sweet Memorial. Icon means you must sign up online or at Sweet Memorial. BOOTCAMP High intensity interval training workouts that include strength training and cardio. Workouts can be modified to fit all fitness levels. Come for some fun and fellowship as well as a great workout! Meet at mini golf. No class if it is raining! BUGS, BUGS, BUGS Age 2-8 Come enter the world of our creepy, crawly friends. We ll learn about the bugs in the forest and go for a walk to find some. Meet inside Sweet Memorial. CAPTURE THE FLAG 1 1/2 Hours Age 8+ How well can you hide, sneak, run, and chase in the classic camp game to retrieve your flag from the other team s side? Meet inside Sweet Memorial. CHESS CLUB 2 Hours Kids must be with an adult. Call Maude Jellison Library (ext. 1133) to sign up, or just show up at the library to see who shares your love of this classic mind game. CHILDREN S MOVIE 2 Hours Kids must be with an adult. A Disney Classic video is shown in the Maude Jellison Youth Library. Check with library staff for featured film, ext DIGGIN IN THE DIRT Age 6+ Come along on a journey back in time to find out how we find out about our past. See if you can find artifacts in the dig site. You WILL get DIRTY! Meet at Museum. ELK WALK 2 Hours Explore the world of elk here at the YMCA! Participate in hands-on activities to learn about elk ecology, herding dynamics, habitat requirements for survival, and seasonal behavior changes. We will go on a field excursion to observe elk behavior. Meet outside Sweet Memorial at the Outdoor Education flag. FAMILY ADVENTURE Age 6+ Can you escape Jungle Island? Your family will have to work as a team to solve the puzzles so you can get rescued. Meet outside Hempel Auditorium. FIVE SENSES 1/2 Hour Age 2-6 Come learn how we explore the mountain environment around us using our senses. Short walk required. Meet inside Sweet Memorial. FLAG FOOTBALL Age 8+ Enjoy a game of non-tackle football with other guests. Meet at basketball courts. FOUR SQUARE Age 4+ Join us for this classic playground game. Meet at basketball courts. HOPSCOTCH & TIDDLYWINKS Drop-in fun for the whole family! Leave the techology at the door and discover games of bygone times. Indoor and outdoor activities. Come rain or shine! Meet at Museum. KICKBALL Age 4+ Join us for some outdoor kicking and running fun. Meet at baseball backstop. LITTLE EXPLORERS Ages 4-10 Learn about the 10 essentials for hiking before we head outside for a treasure hunt. Meet inside Sweet Memorial. LIVING WITH BEARS 2 Hours Learn about one of the Rocky Mountains most fascinating animals, the black bear: their daily life, how they prepare for their deep winter sleep, and how human-bear interactions affect these gentle giants. Meet outside Sweet Memorial at the Outdoor Education flag. MOUNTAIN FOREST 2 Hours Hike and learn about the forest ecosystem surrounding YMCA of the Rockies. Participate in hands-on activities that utilize your senses and field observation skills. Learn about producers and consumers, predator prey relationships, and how humans impact these complex systems.meet outside Sweet Memorial at the Outdoor Education flag. NATURE ART 3/4 Hour Age 4+ Join us as we explore outside and find nature we can make into awesome art. Meet inside Sweet Memorial. NATURE GRAPHICS 3/4 Hour Age 4+ Make a picture frame using pieces of nature and special sun-sensitive paper to create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Meet inside Sweet Memorial. NIGHT WALK 1 1/2 Hours Age 6+ Kids must be with an adult. Experience the night life of the YMCA. We ll go for a walk on grounds and play some games to show how our furry friends get by at night. NOC TALK Learn what goes on in the natural world after the sun goes down -- what animals are active and why, and bahavorial and physical adaptations they have undergone to be successful at night. Meet on the Administration Building front porch. OUTDOOR LIVING SKILLS 2 Hours Come venture into the backcountry. In this advanced course, you ll learn what to do if you lose your way, or encounter an emergency situation while in the woods. Gain handson experience with shelter and fire building. Meet at baseball backstop. YOGA, MULTI-LEVEL Join instructor Laura Collins for integral yoga with a vinyasa flair, suited for all levels. Class focuses on beginners yet more advanced postures are suggested for those who are able. Each class ends in a deep relaxation. Meet at Legett Youth Building. YOGA, POWER Join instructor Laura Collins for Baptiste-style yoga, starting off vigorously with Sun A and Sun B, and then moving into a specific set of sequences designed to awaken creativity. The route follows the Lake Helene trail from Bear Lake to the kettle moraines (i.e. small ponds) on the south slope of Joe Mills, then strikes out through the woods and steeply up the slope to the summit. 14 Thursday, August 13 Wonderland Park (Bear to Grand Lake) 18 B B 5:00 AM -6:00 PM Scott and Sam Spectacular and challenging, "over-the divide" hike, via Wonderland Park with myriad lakes, cascades, & descent down War Dance Falls to Grand Lake. Involves several stream crossings, and some vertical exposure along War Dance Falls (the tallest waterfall in RMNP). HELMETS ARE REQUIRED AND FURNISHED BY THE YMCA ON THIS HIKE. Lawn Lake 12.6 D F 7:30-4:30 Clyde Good trail thru forests & along the Roaring River to a sandy, alpine lake at the base of Mummy Mtn. Dammed in 1903, this was the largest lake within RMNP (48 surface acres) until the dam failed, early in the morning on July 15, Most of the water rushed down the Roaring River, forming the "Alluvial Fan" and ultimately flooding the town of Estes Park. Now the lake is surrounded by sandy shores and wildflowers, as it was in the 1880's, when early residents gave the lake its name. Bierstadt Lake 4.8 F F 4:30 PM- 9:00 PM Mike Trail thru the shady lodgepole forest meanders to world class views of the Continental Divide from the lake, nestled in a hollow on Bierstadt Moraine. Remains of an old logging camp, on the north of the lake, are evidence of the heyday of the logging industry that built the Stanley Hotel and many of the original buildings of Estes Park. Friday, August 14 Gemstones 4.5 E B 8:30 AM- 3:30 PM Tom or Beth Rock scramble among the famous rock formations of Lumpy Ridge to Gem Lake & the granite highpoints on either side of the lake. Climbing Crescent Rock and the three Gemstones involves exposed, 3rd class (non-technical), rock scrambling in several places. This is great fun for youth and agile adults! The YMCA will furnish climbing helmets for this hike. Lawrence Burning Issues Lecture Series - U.S. Economic Overview and Outlook. John Olienyk (PhD, Colorado State University) is Professor Emeritus of Finance at Colorado State University. His teaching and research focus is on international finance and his research on that topic has been published in various finance and economics journals. Dr. Olienyk has substantial international experience, including teaching at universities in France, Russia, and Vietnam. Lecture will be held in Hempel Auditorium. Learn how to see details in the Mountains as well as in trees, flowers and other flora of the Montane Eco System as seen from special places around the YMCA grounds or in Moraine Park. Learn drawing techniques to help you create a sense of light and form in your drawings. Class size is limited to eight participants, (For ages 15 and up, or permission of instructor). This includes the instructional fee and a take home outdoor sketching kit including a field clipboard, a variety of pencils, heavy paper, various supplies and an instructional reference booklet. This four hour outdoor drawing workshop is for adults who enjoy hiking as well as sketching (approx. 2 hours of each activity, allow a little extra time at the end of the class). This trip takes you to the only Wild and Scenic designated river in Colorado. This is a rapids trip, but we take families and first-timers daily. The water has usually slowed down some by August. 22 22 HORSE RIDING TRAIL INFORMATION JACKSON STABLES, INC., YMCA of the Rockies Livery, is authorized by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior to serve the public in Rocky Mountain National Park. All of the horseback rides are guided trail rides into RMNP, and on YMCA property. Reservations are required - call ext or 1149 during office hours ONLY. Below you will find a brief description of the rides we offer. We REQUIRE children age 6 and up to ride their own horse. PONY RIDES: The livery is proud to offer the Minnie Mouse Pony Trail. Reservations are recommended and are for children 5 years old and younger. There is a 50 lb. weight limit for the ponies. Sign up by phone or in the Livery Office. Cost: $15.00 per child. Available times: Daily: 8:30am-11:25am/1:00-4:45pm. *Please note: Day Camp children use the Pony Trail between 9:30-11:00 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, mid-june through mid-august. This is usually a very busy time. DEER MEADOWS: A 1-hour trail ride that follows Glacier Creek to the Wind River area. We consider this a beginner level ride, appropriate for children and first time riders. GLACIER BASIN: This 1-hour trail ride heads west along mildly steep terrain, up Glacier Basin. This ride does some climbing, while looking down on Glacier Creek and a small waterfall. The ride offers spectacular views of the Front Range, including Longs Peak, at the top. This trail is appropriate for riders of all ages. MORAINE PARK: This 2-hour family ride, our most popular, takes you across bridges over Glacier Creek and the Big Thompson River into Moraine Park a glacial moraine full of wildflowers and grand views of the Continental Divide. Wildlife is almost always a certainty to be observed and makes this even a more pleasurable ride. EMERALD MOUNTAIN: This 2-hour loop begins on the Glacier Basin Trail and takes you through beautiful aspens while leading you around Emerald Mountain. The trail travels past the East Portal of the Adams Tunnel before returning along the Aspenbrook Trail. This ride includes many terrains and a variety of views. 3-HOUR RIDE TO BEAVER MEADOWS, CUB CANYON, EAST PORTAL or MILL CREEK: A true horseback riding experience! These rides take you deeper into the aesthetic and scenic values offered in RMNP, each providing a different view of forests, meadows, wildflowers, rivers and the Continental Divide. These rides offer a better opportunity to spot the many varieties of wildlife, and a short rest break is provided about half-way through. These longer rides are designed to include some trotting, but it is not guaranteed. 4-HOUR RIDE TO WIND RIVER: This trip takes you climbing west along Glacier Basin, then heads south along Wind River where the wild flowers are abundant. There is a short rest break about half way through the ride nestled along Wind River. 5-HOUR RIDE TO BIERSTADT LAKE: This ride makes a continuous loop beginning in the lower Mill Creek area, on the way to the summit of the Bierstadt Lake shores, and returns through Glacier Basin. Expect fantastic views of Longs Peak and a variety of sceneries not seen from our other rides. (This ride is not designed for first time riders.) ALL-DAY RIDE: This ride is designed for the seasoned horseback rider and takes you further into the rugged back country of RMNP. The destination varies depending on the time of year and trails that are open, or closed, due to impassable snow conditions. However, the ride does promise to be the highest altitude obtainable, providing the grandest of scenic mountain views. HAYRIDES: Private and Open horse-drawn hayrides are available throughout the summer. Cost is $20.00 per person. Kids 3 years old and under are free. Each hayride lasts approximately 1½ hours and includes a campfire and marshmallow roast. A family favorite! Call the YMCA Livery (ext. 1140) for scheduling and additional information.
