Clubs help groom and maintain over 2500 miles of trails on private land, the Allegheny National Forest and some state trails. Contact with local Legislators is important to our sport. They vote on situations that can affect use. Therefore, clubs are asked to attend local meetings and offer to take local legislators on a snowmobile ride. Let them know what is needed in your area. We need their help. Thank you to clubs for all their work and planning they do to make the trails safe. Liz Krug, President - Think Snow Plan Ahead: PowerSport Show - October 26, 27, 28 Lebanon Expo Center - same as last year. Membership Meeting - April 27, am - Ramada Golf and Conference Center - University Park - same as this year. 4 Keystone Snowmobiler October 2018 Page 4 The weather has been a major factor this year concerning when school starts, what events take place at the club, and when we can mow. Unacceptable levels of mold in the air prompted several districts to delay the opening of schools in our area and also throughout the state. The mold was due to excessive moisture through the summer months. Some school districts had early dismissals September 4, 5, and 6 due to the heat. Other districts delayed or closed September 10 due to flooding. Weather is a complicated and important topic for us all, whether it results in the delaying of grass cutting, school openings, drag races, or the start of riding season. With the fall weather, we are still seeing a mix of warm, rainy weather. Our hope is that the moisture will stay as the cold temperatures set in. This could result in a winter to rival the winters of old. We keep working on perfecting the snow dance and hoping that all of the delays coming up are due to snowfall throughout the area. The Drag Race Season is in full swing. Our first drag race was held Sunday, September 16. Thanks to all of the many volunteers who have coordinated through Brad Hoover, and Sheila and Allan Knupp to get the event rolling. We do not have the results or photos for this issue due to submission deadlines. Stay tuned to the next issue for the results and details about all of LAUREL HIGHLANDS SMC the action. The second race will be on October 14, at the clubhouse. The gates open at 8:00. Time trials begin around 11:00. The spectator fee is $8.00 or $12 for a full-access pit pass. There is food concession on site. As always we can t wait to see the action and how the day unfolds. For additional information, check out or the Facebook page for any additional information. Better yet, join us at the club to see first hand what is happening. Along with the races, we have club meetings 12 months a year on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 8:00 P.M. All meetings are held at the clubhouse and we offer free pizza, brownies, and pop at the meeting. Our snowmobile safety class will be held, Saturday, November 10, 2018, at the clubhouse from 8:30 AM-4:30 PM. We have 6 instructors ready, willing, and able to teach you and your child. Remember, if you sign up your child, plan on spending the day with them and take the course. We have a well respected Hands On Class. We feed, educate, and entertain you all day for free. You will receive valuable information about how to prepare for riding season, suggestions for places to go, and have the opportunity to ask questions about every aspect of the sport from certified individuals. To register call Jim Wilkinson at or at jwwilk@hotmail.com. Our annual club banquet will be held Friday, November 16, 2019, at Bell s Banquet Hall. You should have received your invitation in the mail. Doc Lewis is in charge of setting up the event, and we always have a great time. There will be a buffet dinner, the award for the snowmobiler of the year, and some door prizes. Additional information can be found on our website. Starting in October, we will have a new board member, Doug Hay. Shelly Buckles has served her term limits and will be off the board. Sheila and Allan Knupp are returning to their board positions. Best of luck to all of them. Thank you for helping out the club. The new officers will be elected and posted on the club s website. Many people have been asking about the membership renewal deadline. Your forms should have come in the mail. The renewal forms and checks are due by the November 8th meeting. You may mail the form to PO Box 91, Jones Mills, PA Looking forward to seeing many of you at the PSSA PowerSports show in Lebanon, Pa. on Halloween weekend. Come and spend the day or days. Hopefully everyone has had a great summer and enjoyed some down time in the mountains, or at your summer homes. Just think, only 3 months to go until we get our snow machines out on the trails. We had our yearly election the day of our picnic. More members get a chance to vote on this day. Bryan Junkins 16th ANNUAL HYNER MOUNTAIN SAFETY COURSE The Hyner Mountain Snowmobile Club s 16th annual youth Pennsylvania snowmobile safety course will be conducted on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at the Hyner Mountain Snowmobile Club lodge, which is located along Route 44 approximately 6 miles north of Haneyville, PA in Clinton County. The club s annual safety course is conducted on the third Sunday of November to provide the opportunity for youth to participate in the PA Game Commission s family-oriented Saturday black bear hunt and attend the snowmobile safety course on the same weekend. Pennsylvania s Snowmobile Law requires youngsters between the ages of 10 to 15 to earn a safety certificate before they may lawfully operate a snowmobile in the state, except upon lands owned or leased by their parent or legal guardian. The course is free for all participants. The goal of the course, which was developed and is administered by the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, is to develop safe attitudes and practices in all keystone state snowmobilers. Student manuals and workbooks will be utilized to illustrate the sport s basic principles and safety concepts. The course content will cover winter clothing, machine safety, and snowmobile laws and regulations. Class participants qualify for their certificate by completing their workbooks and achieving a score of 80% or better on the final examination. Course instructors include Hyner Mountain Snowmobile Club members Rich Ebersole of Cornwall, PA and Harrison Langley, Jr. of Palmyra, PA and Keystone Snowmobiler co-editor Henry Hartman of Hanover, PA. Parents are to accompany their children to registration so that the required forms may be completed. Registration begins at 7:30 AM; class starts promptly at 8:00 AM and will end by 4:00 PM. The Hyner Mountain Snowmobile Club will provide lunch. Enrollment for the course is limited to a maximum of 30 students and pre-registration is required. Adults are encouraged to stay for the day to attend the course with their youth students or join the club s members in the living room area of the lodge for a day of conversation and fellowship around a mountain stone fireplace. With direct access to the Sproul State Forest trail system from our parking area, come discover why the club s motto is a great place to park your sled and rest your head The Hyner Mountain Snowmobile Club is located approximately five (5) miles north of Haneyville. From the intersection of Route 44 and Hyner Mountain Road, continue north (straight) on Route 44 and look for Pat Reeders s Tavern on the right. At the end of Pat Reeder s driveway, look for the gravel road on the left which is marked by a green road sign: Reeders Addition Lane. Make a left onto Reeder s Addition Lane and proceed to the end where the lane splits into three (3) separate driveways. Take the middle, gated driveway to the Hyner Mountain Snowmobile Club lodge which is a large, 2-story brown building. The club s parking area encircles the lodge. To pre-register for the course at the Hyner Mountain Snowmobile Club, please contact Dan Casey at or dcasey@ptd.net

12 Keystone Snowmobiler October 2018 Page 12 The Marienville Trail Riders Snowmobile Club had their September meeting and picnic at the Thornton residence on Sunday the ninth. Since it had been raining all weekend, the picnic turned into an indoor party with much food and drink. I can t help to mention how good the peanut butter cookies are that Vice President Joe Rogers brought that were made by his wife. Thanks Kitty and just to add an advertisement for the Kelly Hotel, Kitty cooks at the Kelly. After eating and watching the first half of the Browns/Steeler game, the meeting was called to order. Earl Cross and his wife Phyllis travelled the farthest to attend the meeting coming all the way from Ford City. The big topic that was discussed was planning a trip to Michigan. Joe Rogers has planned a trip the third week of January to Curtis, staying at Pine Bluff Resort. The second trip is scheduled for February Dave Timothy will contact Pine Bluff Resort and check on rooms. Anyone interested in joining should contact us on our website at marienvilletrailriders.com or call Roxanne at The club is continuing their work on the trails and are putting the finishing touch to Trail 1 just off of the Greeley Farm Road. There was a wet spot for approximately a half of a mile that ran parallel with the Tennessee Gas pipeline. The club hauled in 23 tons of MARIENVILLE TRAIL RIDERS SMC stone and 45 tons of 2RC. Thanks to Kinder/ Morgan, the company who took control of the gas line right-of-way, the US Forest Service and the other two clubs that help maintain the 115 mile main loop of Trail 1. They are Pa. Snow-seekers, from Highland and the Forest County Snowmobile Club along with the Marienville Trail Riders. These three clubs had leftover money, due to lack of snow from this past season s grooming funds. All three clubs will be meeting with the Forest Service on November 3 starting at 9 am. The purpose will be to discuss the upcoming Snowmobile season. The Marienville Trail Riders used $ to purchase the 2RC gravel and used Club money to buy the $300 worth of stone. About 1 mile of trail was smoothed out and ditched to allow for water runoff. All work was performed by club members, using their own equipment. In doing this they got more work done with the money they had to spend. None of the work had to be contracted out. Club members Dan Stevenson, Joe LaClaire and Jerry Thornton will return to that section of trail after the Fire Company s ATV Tour de Forest to smooth out any damage that the ATV s might cause. In the past week, the Trail Riders also received a grant from PSSA to purchase more gravel for Trail 11 and to brush more trails. The signage that the club requested in the grant did not get approved and the club decided to pay for this work out of their account. These two signs can be found entering Marienville from the East and West side on Trail 1. They inform riders of traveling responsibly with a 25 mile speed limit in town. The current signs are 50 years old. (see photos at right) Hank Bauer reported that his work on the small groomer, the Track Truck, will continue this week while Jerry Beichner will work on improving the lighting in the groomer barn. It was also reported that Trail Rider director and web master Brian Popoleo took the Forest Service two-day Chain Saw Class last May. Our next meeting will be October 14 at the Kelly Hotel dining room at 2 pm. The club will have their booth at the Marienville Octoberfest from September in front of the bank. They are also planning a ham dinner in March. Thanks to Roxanne Thornton for a great party and a special thanks to Dan and Micky Stevenson. PSSA is sponsoring their PowerSports Show at Lebanon, Pa on October Hope to see lots of people there. All snowmobilers can do their part by joining a club and also joining PSSA. Jerry Thornton
