MICE FACTS AT A GLANCE: The industry is multi-sector -the industry integrates services and products from varied sectors, i.e. Travel management; Hospitality; Transportation, ICT, Recreation/entertainment; and has linkages to advertising. Due to its cross-sector nature, MICE generates economic benefits across sectors. Research indicates that MICE travelers return for leisure to a destination they visited for MICE: boosted by an increasing preference for MICE destinations that offer unique experiences & attractions. Demand for ICT: MICE buyers increasingly value technologies such as wireless internet access & networking, audio-visual services, language interpretation and attendee feedback technologies. MICE travelers value internet access in their Hotel room more than quiet. Kenya has improved steadily in the last three years in the MICE industry performance, as measured by International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA), a leading professional MICE industry association. Kenya was ranked 4 th in 2010; 3 rd in 2011 and 2 nd in 2012 in Africa, after South Africa. In city rankings Nairobi is ranked 2 nd in Africa, behind Cape Town. The improved ranking confirms recent efforts to promote the sector is bearing fruit; and highlights the country s potential to do greatly in this industry with consistent, well structured effort. The promotion of MICE is part of a broader strategy to diversify the country s tourism offering; and has seen the development & launch of the National MICE strategic Plan 2011-2015, developed by the National MICE Committee & Secretariat. The plan lays out the strategic direction for the sub-sector and defines the roles of various government institutions and the private sector in realizing these goals. The plan, if fully implemented, will create a highly competitive and developed MICE industry.
